Cinnamon is an herb that has been used for thousands of years and has many health benefits but only recently discovered to aid in weight loss. It is the world's oldest known herb and has been used by the Chinese to treat numerous ailments such as nausea, diarrhea, and cramps. They have also used it to improve energy, vitality and circulation. However, if you're looking to lose weight, here is what we know. Cinnamon's biochemical action that helps with weight loss is its ability to stabilize blood sugar. If your blood sugar is constantly rising and falling you can bet that you will struggle with your weight. When your blood sugar fluctuates you will have a tendency to crave sweet foods and your body will store excess sugar as fat. So, if you stabilize your blood sugar you will start to feel better and look better, especially if you're exercising. A recent study identified some health benefits of using cinnamon other than weight loss. The study's participants where those with type II diabetes which were asked to ingest Ă‚Âź teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon daily for 40 days. After forty days, a measure of fasting blood sugar was taken and the participants lowered their blood sugar ranging from 18-29%. Also, their triglycerides fell 23-30%, LDL cholesterol fell 7-27% and total cholesterol dropped 12-26%. If you want to use cinnamon to help with weight loss there are some important things to consider. First, not all cinnamon is created equal. There are 2 common forms of cinnamon available. One is a baker's cinnamon referred to as Cassia and the other is the real deal, and referred to as Ceylon. Ceylon cinnamon is more expensive and harder to find but worth the cost if you're focused on weight loss. Also, more is not necessarily better. There are certain elements found in cinnamon that can cause harm to the body when ingested in large quantities. Cinnamon is a wonderful herb with lots of health benefits. However, to gain full advantage of it you should use it consistently. Sprinkle it on your oatmeal, in coffee, or add to a casserole, but be sure not to over due it.
