Welcome to

Welcome to Cowalfest 2013 our 12th festival. Whether you are a returning participant or new to Cowalfest we anticipate that you will find something that you want to do. Our newly designed brochure and web site - we hope you like our new look! - will make it easier for you to find out what’s on and to book the events that you want to attend. Either visit www.cowalfest.org or use the booking form in the centre of this brochure. This year we have changed the focus of the festival from walking and culture to walking and the outdoors. Our expanded committee has come up with some excellent new events including our inaugural 5k and 10k runs. Culture still features with an art exhibition, some mansion house tours, a variety of musical and dancing events and a drama with music. This is my last year as Chair of the festival so I want to thank all of the volunteers, the local businesses that support us and our sponsors and partners who all work together to make Cowalfest such a success every year. As ever feedback is essential not only so that we can continue to improve the festival, but also so that we can send our end of event report to our grant funders. Enjoy CowalFest 2013!.

Jean Maskell — Chair of CowalFEST 3

What you need to know Booking Procedure

• in advance on the website www.cowalfest.org • at Dunoon Visitor Information Centre • by calling in at the Seasons Coffee House during the festival, or • by completing the booking form in this brochure. NB If no bookings have been received the day before a walk, it will be cancelled.

Dear CowalFEST Supporter CowalFEST is based in Seasons Coffee House, next to Dunoon Visitor Information Centre. Charges There is a non-refundable booking fee of £4.00 per person per walk, except where otherwise indicated. Maximum of two children may walk free per paying accompanying adult where stated on some walks.

Walk grading Walks have been graded by experienced walkers to give an indication of the type of walk participants can expect — see our walk grades on page 14. It is important to note that walking conditions change, according to the weather, so the grading given is only a guide. Cowal’s hills are often challenging and the terrain can be rough. Please pay attention to our walk descriptions and ensure you have appropriate equipment/clothing for autumn walking in Scotland — sturdy and waterproof footwear, warm and waterproof clothing and a drink and a snack. Transport Transport is provided for some walks. Public transport Bus timetables are available from Dunoon Visitor Information Centre. Walks which can be accessed by public transport are indicated, but bus times should always be verified before setting out. Walk times should give adequate time but will depend on walking speed and conditions. Please inform the walk facilitator if you have a deadline to meet. Car parking Car parking is usually available at walk start points but can sometimes be limited. Prior booking Numbers participating on guided walks are limited. To avoid disappointment prior booking of all walks is strongly recommended. 4

Know the Code... Enjoy Scotland’s outdoors — responsibly! Everyone has the right to be on most land and water providing they act responsibly. Your access rights and responsibilies are explained fully in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code — www.outdooraccess-scotland.com

Always • Take responsibility for your own actions. • Respect the interests of other people. • Care for the environment. Start points Maps showing the start point of walks are in the brochure and on the website. Registration Walkers must register with the walk facilitator at the start point 15 minutes before setting off. Anyone who has not booked may be accepted at the walk facilitator’s discretion and on payment of the booking fee. Dogs Dogs on short leads are allowed on some walks. See walk details for information. Liability Participants in CowalFEST take part at their own risk.

Organisers and supporters shall not be liable for any accident or injury however caused. You are strongly advised to check your personal accident insurance. Cowal Walking Festival Association reserves the right to cancel any walk at any point.

Enjoy yourselves! Most of our walk facilitators are volunteers, sharing with you their knowledge and passion for the breathtaking scenery, hills, forests, wildlife, history and culture of Cowal.

Walking in Cowal Apart from the guided festival walks there are many places to walk in Cowal throughout the year. Further details are available from the CowalFEST website www.cowalfest.org and Dunoon Visitor Information Centre. Accommodation The VisitScotland Accommodation Guide

is available from Dunoon Visitor Information Centre, Alexandra Parade, Dunoon, Argyll PA23 8AB, Tel: 01369 703785 or Email: info@dunoon.visitscotland.com.

CowalFEST 2013 is organised by Cowal Walking Festival Association — a voluntary body which draws support from communities, organisations and businesses throughout the Cowal Peninsula. 5

Walk Grades Weather conditions in Cowal are very changeable so it is vital to wear appropriate autumn clothing and sturdy footwear particularly on longer more strenuous walks. The walk leader is entitled to refuse to take anyone who is not suitably dressed. Highland Stores in Dunoon offer advice and stock a variety of clothing and accessories.

Easy — mainly flat walking on paths with good surfaces. No stiles, few if any steps. Fairly easy — gentle walking on paths with uneven surfaces. Gentle or short inclines. Stiles or steps to be expected. Moderate — varying landscape or shoreline. Marked inclines, stiles or steps to be expected. Suitable for anyone who is reasonably active. Fairly strenuous — a challenging walk. Fitness

and proper equipment required. Steep inclines and rough ground.

Strenuous — long, with varied terrain. Suitable for fit, experienced walkers with proper equipment.

Once part of Harry Lauder’s estate, Glenbranter remains a stunning gorge. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Forestry Commission planted extensively in the 1920s in the glen. The plants were basically abandoned when the interests of the RBGE moved south to the now Benmore Botanic Garden. 34 species of rhododendron still survive and there are now plans to plant areas within the glen with threatened and rare rhododendron species which are of known wild origin. This is a stunning glen.

Friday 4th October Visit to Kilmodan School to view work of artist, Robert Stewart Time: Facilitator:

Friday 4th October 10:00-12:00 Kilmodan School Glendaruel

In 1975 a Robert Stewart mural was presented to the newly opened Kilmodan school in the Clachan of Glendaruel. Robert Stewart and his family lived in the area and his children attended the school. This amazing artwork of 16 elaborately decorated ceramic panels depicting majestic bird soaring above a rugged landscape of standing stones and wild grasses, lit by a golden moon, is being made available to the public for Cowalfest. The school is delighted to host a public tearoom to welcome you and to celebrate a community treasure. Entrance by donation to the school fund.
