The Cenotaph
hosted this year’s Remembrance Day event and it took place in about -25C weather. Chiefs, Councilors and those who had someone serve or are serving stood in place while Trevor Larocque (US Marine) did the MC duties. There was a drum group and one female Elder from Maskwacis laid a wreathe for the all the sons who were lost. The Chiefs all said a few words to the people who were gathered and there was lunch served at the end.

Awareness Week
HBMC in Samson: The Community Wellness department hosted the annual NAAW conference with guest speakers, community awareness of programs and services and discussions. If you want to see what programs and services are available for the people please see the facebook page:
Community Wellness NNADAP
Scroll through the page and take a look at what the service has to offer.
When I arrived Samson Councilor Frank Buffalo was speaking about his experiences and he told the people to take of one another, to love each other and to keep helping each other if you can.
Next up was Staff Sargeant Travis McKenzie. If you ever have time go see Travis’s presentation. He gives up to date statistics of what’s going on in the community, where we are at and where we can possibly go in the future. Travis does not hold back on his presentations. He basically talks about the truth of what gang life is and recommendations that parents can take to avoid potential problems in the future. It is also about choices. Right now, role models are needed in this community. Travis mentioned that the mainstream media will give you a role model if you don’t produce one yourself.
Travis said that addictions come from the past for most people. Jail is not an viable option when something does happen and that a cultural change is needed. What is needed is programs and services while people are incarcerated and finally, Travis said that people can change when trauma is healed. Community members can start making the youth feel safe, making places safe to hang out at and healthy activities.
From there, Yvonne Nepoose Rich mentioned that Community Wellness does have programs and services for members who want to try and end their addictions.
There was also gift bags, prizes and lunch served by A1 Catering from Camrose.
