FIRE EXTINGUISHER

a first response fire extinguishing product designed to use simple home cooking products to target and prevent kitchen fires

Firefighters respond to an average of 373,900 home fires each year.

R ATE OF FIR E D OUBL ES

Studies show that home fires double in size every 30 seconds. Each second becomes increasingly vital.

BASED ON A STUDY OF 750 WOMEN THE CONVENTIONAL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS PROVE TO HAVE ITS PROBLEMS IN BOTH USER EXPERIENCE AND THE EASE OF USE

79% DID NOT KNOW HOW TO USE

92% UNSURE IF ABLE TO USE IN CASE OF FIRE

59% DID NOT BELIEVE IT FIT HOUSEHOLD

68% HAD ISSUE WITH COST & MAINTENANCE

These locations highlight where most fires in the kitchen occur: stovetop, ovens and electrical outlets. The encompassed location are areas of opportunity that can be explored. Often times fire extinguishers are placed far away from the fire causing users to lose vital seconds.

BAKING SODA

In order for a fire to begin and sustain itself, there are three basic requirements: fuel, heat and oxygen. A fire is prevented or extinguished by removing any one of the three.

+

2 CO FOAM

Combining Baking Soda (BASE) and Vinegar (ACID) create a reaction. The result is a carbon dioxide foam. Firefighters use a similar foams made up of a carbon dioxide gas phase which disperse in a liquid water phase. These foams smothers the fire by covering the fire and preventing oxygen from fueling the fire.

I D E ATI O N S K ETC H E S The Ideation behind the Cyclone was to focus on a product which would minimize the number of steps to use it. Designing the form around the target location of placement would increase user awareness.

D ESIGN PL ACEM EN T The Cyclone was designed for the kitchen. Its form allows it to be placed in utensil holders and racks. By placing the Cyclone out in the open, it allows for easy access and immediate response.

T H E CYCLON E The Cyclone Fire Extinguisher is not meant to replace the fire extinguisher but act as a first response to kitchen fires. The design functions to improve issues with maintenance, cost, user emotion, and the overal safety of households.

2 PULL BACK TO SPRAY FOAM

Maintenance is no longer an issue. No longer needs to replace fire extinguishers. Prepared and confident in using the Cyclone in the case of a fire. Designed to be set in plainview, the user remembers the location when needed. Able to re-use Cyclone by utilizing common household products; baking soda and vinegar. Protect the home and extinguish kitchen fires without wasting vital seconds.

I D E ATI O N S K E TC H E S The ideation behind these sketches were to explore forms where the HINS light could be used most effectively. The form was also influenced by attempting to lower the amount of surface area touched by the user.

H I GH I NT ENS I T Y NARROW S PECTR UM (HIN S) A narrow band of visible-light wavelengths centered on 405 nm which decontaminates the air and all visible surfaces, regardless of accessibility, through direct and reflected exposure to HINS-light within the treated environment. The HINS-light is being developed for use in hospital overhead lights and is not harmful to humans. HINS-light can make a significant impact towards bacterial decontamination in public environments.*

WHY DO THESE INJURIES & ACCIDENTS OCCUR?

1. Crosscutting a piece of wood 2. Saw kerf closes around the blade. 3. Fence is not parallel to blade 4. Cutting twisted, distorted wood 5. Freehand cutting 6. Losing control of the work 7. Not following through 8. Backing out of a cut 10. Improper setup

72%

OF INJURIES ARE CAUSED BY KICKBACK K I C K B ACK IN J UR IES Kickback is the most common injury of saws and poses the greatest hazard. Kickback occurs when the rotating blade is stopped suddenly by contact with a more solid area throwing the saw and solid rapidly backward toward the operator.

A NTI - KI C K BAC K DE VI C E This anti kick-back device is formed in a leaf shape. When in use, the device is flipped down toward the wood. The shape creates friction between itself and the wood plank eliminating the possiblity of kickbacks and injuries.

Nike's commitment to innovation towards athletes is to affect positive long-term changes that empower and support the communities which we live, work and play. Their belief that "if you have a body, you are an athlete" includes all living beings. This idea inspired the redesign of the Dante handheld circular saw. The ability to physically build and create continues Nike's pursuit toward great innovations.
