Why did you decide to get in the business of health & fitness?

Health and fitness found me. As a young girl, I went through a period of anorexia. I dwindled from a healthy 110 pound to 52 pounds, ended up in the hospital after blacking out, and had an irregular heartbeat. My body was shutting down and if I stayed the course, I would have died at the age of 17. The day I got home from the hospital, I had a “coming to Jesus” moment. It will be a day that I will never forget, and some people may not believe this, but I literally heard God talk to me. It changed my course in life and led me to where I am today. KMM was established about 30-years ago and I started competing 18-years ago.

Why are you

in

this type of health and fitness?

KMM was established at the time I was married to someone in the health industry, and I created it to help promote his practice. As time went by, more corporate onsite services were added because the demand and need were there for their employees. Prior to that season in my life, I was a fitness instructor for 21-years after a head instructor at a gym told me I might as well teach and get free membership since I was always at the gym. Throughout those years, I would have people come up to me asking me if I competed and I had no idea what they meant but they would encourage me to do so. It was not till I got a divorce, wrote a list of things I wanted to accomplish that I prepped and entered an NPC competition show in Figures. I did well so I continued thriving receiving my IFBB Pro status 10-years ago.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date?

(please provide a timeline if possible)

In both KMM and Lenore-IFBBPRO.com, I have reached many significant milestones. Because of KMM’s ongoing local contributions, I have been honored with several awards and recognitions from several school districts, SAPD, American Diabetes, the City of San Antonio, and even the past mayor of San Antonio, Phil Hardberger to name a few. KMM had a radio station for a period, Kaiser Health Talk, and was recognized in a few local magazines. In the fitness world, receiving my IFBB Pro status as

a professional bodybuilder on the first try was the start of an amazing journey. Since then, I have received over 45 trophies, and 5 X Champ of the Pittsburgh Pro Show. 2022 was my best year where I swept all 12 divisions with 1st places, received the 2022 Fitgems fan favorite in Pro Women’s Physique, Pro Bodybuilder, Pro Master’s Women’s Physique, Pro Master’s Bodybuilder, and Fitness Model of the year. That year I also received the prestigious invitation to the Master’s Olympia that was held in Romania in 2023, making me 1 of 20 athletes out of over 400 from around the world that were selected.

What has been your most satisfying moment in your health & fitness lifestyle or business career?

There are too many to list, but in both, I’ve seen lives changed for the better. Through KMM, I remember being at a health fair we provided for a company and a male employee complained about a lump on his back that was causing him back pain. He was scheduled in with a doctor, which led to him finding out he had a cancerous tumor.

Another time, a female employee at a health fair mentioned she had never gone to the doctor to get a mammogram, so she was offered one for free. She found out she had stage 1 breast cancer and because of that health fair KMM provided to that company, she was able to not only do preventative care, but it saved her life. In my fitness world, I never realized my impact at first.

My first encounter was when I was a fitness instructor and a chubby red-headed lady, Carol, came to my class. After class, she approached me to help her with the step moves. I happily did. A couple of years went by and a skinny red-haired lady went to another class of mine. After class, she approached me and asked me if I remembered her. I didn’t. She showed me her driver’s license and it was the chubby red-haired lady.

Carol had been going to my class all that time and I never realized it. She told me I inspired her. A few years later she died of cancer, and I was called by the gym because Carol’s sister was trying to find me. I was the only person out of the family that she left in her will and it was a bracelet and a beautiful letter reminding me how inspira-

tional I was to her in her darkest moments knowing she had cancer. She never shared that with me. As an IFBB Pro, I created the 9-week fit challenge to allow ordinary people to experience what it is like to be in my shoes 9-weeks prior to a show. They eat, drink, workout, and live my lifestyle. Countless lives have changed. People that were on medication no longer are. People that never went to the gym or lifted weights now have a passion for it. People that never thought of competing, did! A few went on to get certified as a personal trainer and it’s now their livelihood.

But one story in my 9-week fit challenge will stay with me. It was a massage therapist that I randomly selected to see at a massage facility. During the massage session I told him about the next 9- week fit challenge and because he showed interest, I gave him the information to join. He did. Towards the end of the challenge, he shared with the group that the day I visited him to get a massage, he contemplated suicide, but joined the challenge instead. He chose life and today he is successful, married, and doing well.

What is your background? Education, Work Experience in health & fitness?

My work experience of over 30-years has always been in health, fitness, and management. I am certified as a personal trainer, certified in nutrition, certified in weight management, Certified CPR, CEO of KMM, Owner of Lenore-IFBBPRO.com, Olympian IFBB Pro in Women’s Physique, RN, and Published Author.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?

KMM’s mission statement is “Keeping Employees Healthy Year Round!” Our goal is to provide as many onsite health services as possible at the workplace to keep employees productive, happy, and sick-free. Can you describe your customers? KMM’s customers vary from companies

direct, health insurance brokers wanting to provide onsite health services to their corporate clients or health insurance providers. KMM does service individuals with optional health services such as vitamin shots, flu shots, Semaglutide, and other direct services though. Lenore-IFBBPRO.com services a variety of clients. Clients contemplating gastric bypass but needing to meet insurance requirements of losing so much weight prior, ordinary people wanting to get a structured meal plan and workout plan, and competitors wanting a prep coach.

do your customers select you over your competitors?

KMM is a local, minority, woman owned 30-year company that tailors to corporate client’s needs. I’m proud to say most corporate clients have been with KMM for over 15-years or longer. Experience is important and so is the relationship. With Lenore-IFBBPRO.com, again experience is important. I know every possible thought and scenario an individual will have before they even

bring it up, if they do. As a coach, I’m all about the “why’s”. Why am I asking the individual to do things a certain way. Why am I asking them to eat certain foods over others. It is very important for an individual to understand the “why’s” to gain understanding and knowledge that will help them stay the course. Educating clients through their fitness journey is a huge plus in their success long term, so when I ask something from the clients, I always explain the “why’s”.

Through the years I’ve been blessed with words, letters, and awards. I have to say the words and letters hold a higher place in my heart because they came from individuals that took the time to let me know how my life changed their life for the better. If my experiences, coaching, friendships, and interactions made a difference in one’s life that now is prospering, healthier, and happy I can honestly say I will be smiling in heaven.

What does health & fitness mean to you?

For me, health and fitness means embodying the “whole package.” Meaning, one must be sure to provide themselves with the space for intentional physical and mental health and development.

Why did you decide to get in the business of health & fitness?

I realized that physical fitness is essential to meaningful quality of life, but in order to achieve this, one must have the proper mental health to develop and maintain goals and keep motivated.

Why are you in this type of fitness?

I am into this type of fitness of total mind/ body/soul balance because I feel people are multifaceted and need to honor all parts of their health.

How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?; Such as what foods do you recommend for a healthy lifestyle?; and what type of exercises do you suggest doing?

I cannot stress this enough: water. Water is your best friend. Also, when shopping for groceries I always recommend shopping from the perimeter of the store, meaning the dairy, eggs, fruits and vegetables, meats, poultry, etc. The border of most any store is where you find the healthy unprocessed foods that your body needs. As for exercise, I recommend keeping motivated with low impact exercise like walking 10k-15k steps a day. Why? Because it is a simple workout that is free to do any time of day and night, and it is also easy to stay

motivated with, particularly if you have a walking partner or neighbors you can talk to and not feel the pressure of a gym. Is a sound mind important in keeping a healthy lifestyle?

Without a sound mind, physical health is almost impossible to continue to keep motivated with.

What’s more important, health or fitness?; Or can one not live without the other?; are they equally important?

Both are equally important. You can’t have one without the other.

Does your environment help in a complete overall healthy body and mind?

Environment is so important. If you are in an environment that won’t encourage your goals or are around people who enable bad habits, you may want to rethink the people you surround yourself with.

Do you recommend joining health and fitness clubs to reach your health & fitness goals?

I feel health and fitness clubs are always great motivators— these people are in the trenches with you, and can empathize with your fitness goals and journey.

Would you also recommend any specific drinks that are good in maintaining a healthy diet?

I don’t have a particular diet to recommend, but I caution everyone against fad diets. Sure, you lose weight quickly. However, they aren’t sustainable in the long run because they are too restrictive. When you have too much restriction, you grow to resent the diet, and ultimate break it. Moderation is key in life, so enjoy a slice of the cake or a piece of chocolate (just not the whole cake).

Do you like the word diet or prefer healthy eating?

Diets seem too fleeting. A whole lifestyle change and approach to nutrition addresses dismantling unhealthy eating habits.

Are there any specific healthy snacks that you would recommend?

Food that is more dense like grapes, strawberries, watermelon, etc, which are more satisfying and less calories per handful.

I’m a psychotherapist who provides clients the collaborative space to develop and implement a plan for their goals. I continue to educate myself with continuing education courses to keep myself in the loop with health trends. Additionally I am CPR certified to ensure I am present in the case of a health emergency.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

I see myself right where I am at: working alongside clients who are motivated to improve themselves.

What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business today?

I would say to keep in mind that you are helping people with their own goals, not yours. Your job is to continue to motivate them, but also realize that they have to want their goals fulfilled, and you can’t want it for them more than they do for themselves. I would say to not take someone else’s progress personally.

What

is the most satisfying quality about your job?

I get to see people transform themselves into something better than they once were. It was always in them, but now they can see it too.

would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

Keeping people motivated but realizing that it is ultimately their responsibility to keep on their path.

How do you define health & fitness success?

Inner peace and happiness within. That looks different for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay.

The story of Me, Brandi lynn

I am a San Antonio/Boerne based photographer who loves to create. I’m originally from North Dakota but moved to San Antonio to attend University of Texas at San Antonio after serving in the military. I call both North Dakota and Texas home

Since high school, it’s always brought me so much joy to create. My favorite mediums were oils, acrylics, watercolor and graphite and in 2011, I added photography as another medium to create art.

My camera started as a tool for me to capture my kids through portraits, sports and milestone events and it has turned into so much more than that. My kids have grown up with a camera in their face... literally. I get a lot of eye rolls from them but I know that when they’re older, they are really going to appreciate it. I truly love documenting our lives and taking photos that capture their personality and emotions.

My passion is portraits. I really enjoy meeting new people, getting to know them and helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I love watching someone transform during a photo session. It’s truly magical to watch a person let go of their insecurities, embrace who they are in the moment and see them feel truly comfortable in their own skin. This is always my goal during the session. It so rewarding when clients look at their photos and feel good about themselves.

CARLEN PALMER BLUME

-Why did you choose this career? Why did you choose this specialty?

I chose Dentistry after considering being a Broadway dancer and a fashion designer. My parents encouraged me to find a career that was more secure and predictable. At the time, I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology class that I found very interesting. I had a lot of orthodontic work and was close to my childhood dentist. I liked that they owned their own businesses and still did something somewhat artistic with smile design, etc. I decided to go ahead with the sensible career and chose Dentistry! As far as choosing Pediatrics, I thought I was always going to choose Orthodontics. Ultimately, I found myself gravitating toward the younger patients when I was a general dentist. I found their joy and honesty to be inspiring, and they would allow me to really make a difference in their habits and care. I had a foster patient in Corpus Christi that I connected with.

She wouldn’t let other providers touch her, but the two of us were able to work through her fears and take care of all of her needs. Another kiddo was struggling with obesity, and his mom asked me to talk to him about some ideas for diet and activity. He was six years old at the time. I talked him into playing soccer (with his mom’s permission) and went to his first soccer game! It was so gratifying, I decided I wanted more opportunities to connect with children. In addition, my son was having lots of medical difficulties, and I found that providers really lacked empathy and communication skills. I decided against orthodontics, as I knew my place was Pediatric Dentistry.

-Your professional experience: Tell us about your background as a Doctor: Education and Experience. What are your specialties/ expertise? What unique skills do you possess?

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Zoology in 1995. From there, I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1999 from The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. With the US Navy, I completed my first residency in 2000, an Advanced Education in General Dentistry, in San Diego, California. After serving the Navy until 2006, I returned to UTHSCSA in 2008 to complete my residency in Pediatric Dentistry. Currently, I provide full spectrum service to children from birth to age 18. I offer a wide range of surgical services, as well as emergency, cosmetic and Invisalign solutions. Our focus at Blume Pediatric Dentistry is wellness and self-esteem.

Health & tness

-If you were to describe yourself as a Doctor in three words, what would they be and why?

“Empathetic” should be all three of them. I remember tearing up when I had to tell

people they had cavities. It is harder than you might think to constantly tell people they have done something less than perfect, and it resulted in a cavity for their child. No matter how we say it, it stings, and I feel every bit of it. You can tell me you feed your child candy all day every day and never brush, and I still feel bad telling you they have cavities!

“Ethical” would be another one. I am constantly trying to make sure we are doing our best for every patient - even if it is at my expense or inconvenience. I want everyone to feel they were properly cared for, and I want to go home and believe in my heart that I did my best every day. I also want my staff to see me set the example of admitting when I am wrong and correcting my mistakes.

“Accepting” would be the final word. I am a welcoming person for all people. I am a safe person. I care about things like choosing your pronouns or having an identity crisis. I care if you are in the foster system and need a hug. I think we need to spend less time judging people and more time caring for their mental and physical health. The first step of that is to accept people for who they tell you they are, not for who you want them to be.

-What do you like most about practicing dentistry and why?

I like the really hard cases that I feel make a major difference in the health of the patient, whether it be preventing or fighting an infection, or helping them eat or sleep without pain. It is a bonus to me if it is also a cosmetic solution, and they can really see what it is we did. Dentistry is unique in that we often find problems before people know they have them, so they know it was hard and expensive to get the work done, but they don’t really see the benefit. The fun cases are when they really can see or feel the difference.

-What aspects of practicing medicine do find most challenging?

Why?

Explaining the finances is the most difficult part. Dentistry is expensive. Our equipment is expensive. Everything about it is expensive, and dental insurance coverage is supposed to be an adjunct to care, not a full-coverage payment system. People have a finite amount of money and spending it on something that isn’t hurting right now can be difficult. I hate talking about money. I want to do the things patients need without that being a barrier, but even my most wealthy families with great coverage sometimes don’t see the value in investing in oral health. It is a difficult conversation for sure. I also don’t enjoy the negativity that often surrounds Dentistry. It is challenging to be constantly telling people their diet or lack of oral hygiene, or even just their oral flora and genetics have resulted in something that requires a surgical procedure that every TV show, parent or grandparent story, or even a song on the radio tells you it is going to hurt. It is a real battle to create a positive environment from a patient’s or parent’s certainty that they are walking into a torture session!

-What is your philosophy with medicine and treating patients?

My philosophy repeats everything else I am saying in these questions. I just want to provide people with social acceptance, an educational experience, and ethical treatment.

-What challenges do you feel dentists are facing today?

Dentists have always faced the challenge of providing negative information in a positive manner. We get better and better at it, and as technologies advance, so does our ability to provide comfortable service and more choice for less invasive care. Insurance is out of control, and if we don’t get it handled, the boutique private practices will cease to exist. The chain practices, called DSOs, get more favorable prices for things and payments from insurance companies because of their numbers. We will have to change our approach, and I feel patients will suffer their already limited ability to make purely autonomous choices about their care.

-What are some of your greatest accomplishments?

Personally, it would be raising my kids. Yes, that is cliche, but it is also true. My kids are extraordinarily talented and driven, and I am so fortunate to be allowed to believe I contributed! Professionally, I have some great relationships with patients and their families. I have two staff members that have been with me for 14 years. I have to be doing something right! I have been the

President of the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a Regional Director covering six states and Mexico for the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, among several other positions. That has been an honor given to me by my pediatric dentistry colleagues to be allowed to represent them.

-How do you keep current with your medical training and licensing?

I take tons of continuing education classes. Being closed on Fridays allows me to do a lot of courses without closing the office. Most of the time, I take double the amount of required course hours per year - if not more.

-How do you build rapport with patients in your care?

This is something I work on all the time. As mentioned before, accepting people is the first step, but most people aren’t in a dark or confusing place and just need me to be kind and friendly and professional. We try to find positive things to share with the patient and tell stories about ourselves to be more relatable. We make sure we compliment patients on the things that they do well and explain that the suggestions we give for improvement are for their oral health and are not an attack on their character.

-What are your greatest

strengths and weaknesses?

My greatest strength and weakness is that I am emotionally invested in people. I want everyone to believe in me, and I want to believe in everyone. It speaks to empathy. I am loyal and passionate. Because of this, I get easily hurt and let down. On the other hand, because of this, I have the most incredible friends and support network anyone could ask for. It helps and hurts at work, too, but I am glad I’m not cold and calculated. I like going through life really feeling things in a positive way.

-What travels have you taken, and what exposure to other cultures have you

had?

I have lived all over the country and have the fortune to have traveled outside the country several times. My time spent in the Navy introduced me to even more cultures, and my practice actually has a very multicultural footprint of patients. It is a gift to me to be able to learn about other cultures and practices, as I find it, not only fascinating, but also very useful when communicating with people who see things from a different perspective. I think my favorite place I never knew I wanted to go is Japan. I have been twice: once with dental school and once with the Navy. I learned so much about their land and food, but more importantly, about their culture. It would be so amazing to have the opportunity to see more countries that way.

-If you could be granted three wishes for making the world/society/your community a better place, what would they be, and why (or, If you were given a million dollars to achieve three goals, what would you work on, and why)?

The number one thing I would improve that would most definitely make the world a better place is education. It would take more money than we can imagine, but anything could be a start. We need to pay teachers better for so many reasons. We should be supporting the ones who are there. We should be making it a desirable profession. We should be making it all the things politicians say, but can’t do because we can’t fund it. We need equal facilities for all kids with technology because they can’t compete, either in college applications, nor in the workforce if they can’t use technology comfortably. Even trade-focused education requires technology. We can’t expect the lower socio-economic status part of our society to be able to change their cycle if we don’t educate their children. My dream would be to take a generation of children and fairly educate them, provide them with supportive households for climate and sleep conditions, internet access to do their homework and the equipment to do it, adults to take interest and foster a learning environment, making it as fair as some people believe it is, but we know it’s not. How would that change our education system and the outcome of a generation of confident, healthy high school graduates enter

ing all parts of our economy? I believe that would be the greatest experiment of all time.

The next thing I would do is make our health insurance system more fair and more reasonable. I am an educated business owner in the medical profession, yet can’t get appropriate PPO healthcare! What do less fortunate people do? I worry every day that I don’t have enough money to weather a medical emergency, like a car accident or cancer. It is a crime that we live in a society where this is a debilitating problem and barrier to actual health care because we won’t go to the doctor for fear of a problem resulting in bills we can’t pay.

Finally, I would like to clean up the oceans and water supplies around the world. My daughter is studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences at the University of California Los Angeles. She is invested in our climate at 20 years old. I would like to see her chosen field of study be important for all of us, as our climate controls our air, food quality, in terms of crops and in terms of food chain, safety in our drinking water, and in travel and recreation. Our weather contributes to our safety and health and the protection of our homes from storms and fire. It is such an important topic that gets glossed over as a political hot topic.

-What do Doctors do for fun?

I am a work hard/play hard kind of person. When I leave the office, I spend as much time with my kids (when they are in town), my parents, my friends, and my four dogs as possible. I am a foodie and love to try new restaurants all over San Antonio. I love to go

to the theater and exercise as much as I can! Really, though, if my people are there, I will do pretty much anything. I am incredibly lucky to have a great support network of people that I just love to spend time with!

-What

is “success” in your opinion?

I have been a dentist for 25 years. It doesn’t feel that long and my definition of “success” has evolved with age - as I think it does for a lot of people. Success is coming home at the end of the day and feeling like I did something worthwhile. It is making someone’s day better or caring for someone, or maybe, even completing a procedure I am proud of. It is getting a good night’s sleep because I know I tried my best to be an ethical human.

-After 25 years as a dentist, what kind of “success” would/do you hope to have achieved?

I thought I was going to make so much money, that I would be able to do whatever I wanted! Ha! That didn’t happen! Now what I really want is to be a safe person for kids going through life. I want to help them with their oral health, but the kids (and their parents) that have impacted me the most have been the foster kids, the special needs kids, the kids struggling with their identity, and anyone else who just needs to be loved where they are. If I can make people feel like they can be themselves around me, and I can make them feel like valuable people, I would love that. I am not perfect. I get busy and rush and gloss over things sometimes, but it is a goal for my success that I will continue to work toward.

-Do you have any family members or role models who are physicians? No

-What family members, friends, or other individuals have been influential in your decision to pursue a medical career?

I was really good at Anatomy and Physiology and had a great teacher, Joyce Olson. She talked me into taking the class, and we dissected cats and pigs. I found it so interesting at a time when I was applying to college and deciding my path. It just all clicked from there.

-If

you could invite four people from the past to dinner, who would they be, and why would you invite them? What would you talk about?

I would love to talk to Walter Cronkite. He was my mom’s favorite news anchor. In fact, when I was two years old, my mom asked me if I wanted my dad to build me a kite out of some bamboo we saw. I asked how he would build a Walter Cronkite! Ha! I would like to talk to him about our Alma Mater, The University of Texas, and what he thinks about the influx of editorial journalism as compared to when he was the king of the television and journalists were measured by their accuracy and comprehensiveness.

What would he feel about our current political climate and how would he think we could improve things?

As a “wannabe” Broadway performer, I would love to talk to Julie Andrews. No, she is not dead. Her iconic roles shaped me and my son, who is studying musical theater at the University of Oklahoma. One of my first records was Mary Poppins, and it was the first official touring Broadway show I took my kids to see. Briggs had never heard the music before and came out singing every song like he knew it forever. I also played The Sound of Music on piano over and over as a kid and could sing every word. I wanted to be Maria so badly, and I can still see her face as I type this! She has done so much more and impacted so many people - young and old. I want to hear about her journey and how playing the role of Maria and covering the topic of Nazi Germany in a musical affected her perspective. I wonder if she was criticized at all or felt any political responsibility to the story. I also wonder if other roles made her feel like she helped tell a story that people needed to hear and how that impacted her personally.

Dinner with Mahatma Gandhi would be a gift of enormous magnitude! He was actually killed on the exact day my mom was born, January 30, 1948. I feel like she got some of his spirit as a true pacifist. I would like to learn more about his life and beliefs and unwavering strength. His dedication to peace and kindness to inspire change is something we should emulate daily. I can’t even fathom the level of faith and courage that man possessed. I would just like to hear him say just about anything. I know I

could learn enough for a lifetime in the time it would take to have dinner.

My final choice for dinner would be an athlete or a musician. My passion for music and sports collides here, as it is almost an impossible choice. Since Julie Andrews covers music, I will go with Jackie Robinson. Imagining his fortitude and courage to pursue his calling in the face of adversity is almost impossible to wrap my head around. What an inspiration to be the example! I want to know if he realized the profound impact he was having, or if it was more tangible and immediate to him. Can someone even fathom that they will be the subject of such important conversations for generations? What does he feel was the turning point for him, and would he do anything differently, if given the opportunity? Also, how would he feel about circumstances today? Would he still love baseball? Would he do it all again?

-What excites you about dentistry in general?

I really love offering new services to my patients. I was one of the early providers in San Antonio of all-white crowns for children. We still offer the silver ones, which are totally appropriate in many situations, but I love being able to offer a highly desirable alternative. I have also recently started offering Invisalign, which I believe is an important step in enriching the experience in my office and enhancing the self-esteem of my patients.

-What do you believe to be some of the most pressing health issues today? Why?

That is a complicated question. As a dentist,

I feel like I am expected to focus on the oral cavity. In fact, 51 million hours of school are lost each year to poor oral health, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is a staggering statistic! However, I think this ties in with one of our biggest healthcare risks, which is our diet. We are such a carbohydrate and sugar-controlled society. You don’t have to be overweight to suffer from the side effects of a high sugar diet! Sugar is addictive. It affects our blood sugar, concentration, and energy levels, among so many other things! As a dentist, I obviously see its impact in the form of cavities, but in my own body, I struggle with high blood sugar, brain fog, and poor energy when I am not eating right.

social responsibilities of a physician?

I feel like the healthcare industry, in general, has a responsibility to practice what we preach. I mean, if I didn’t take care of my mouth, how could I expect to be seen as a credible source? In other social aspects, I think it is helpful if healthcare providers show compassion outside of the office. We don’t stop being caregivers when we walk out the door.

-What

do you consider an

important/the most important medical problems facing the United States today

and why?

As I mentioned, our diets are crucial to the health of our society. I wish I was a better

example, myself, but there is evidence that what we put in our mouths affects every system in our body, and so many illnesses can, either, be managed, or at least, improved with proper foods (or the avoidance of certain foods). It is really incredible what the absorption of various substances via our gut can do - good and bad. There is so much overwhelming, conflicting and changing information in this area. It is extraordinarily difficult to get everyone to agree and spread a cohesive message.

-How do you think national health insurance affects physicians, patients, and society?

I think our insurance system in the United States is criminal. Patients are being led to believe they cannot get procedures because their insurance does not cover it. Insurance companies are allowing non-physicians and non-dentists to approve and deny treatment from a manual or code that isn’t unique to the patient.

The cost is being driven up because insurance companies pay on a percentage of a charge, and this forces the charges to get driven up just to be able to pay our staff and cover costs. Staff time spent to decipher each individual plan and its nuances, and the insurance companies denying things on purpose to force appeals that they hope we don’t complete is also a ridiculous cost. It is so complicated, many - if not mostpeople don’t really understand it all, which I believe is by design. The providers and their staff end up having to explain the convoluted system to patients and their families that get so frustrated and confused, and they often get frustrated with the messenger.

We have become insurance-dependent, and non-healthcare providers are controlling the message, the decisions, and getting paid more than half of the money spent. It is atrocious.

-Can you think of any examples in our society when healthcare is a right? When is it a privilege?

At a minimum, I believe children should have a right to healthcare. The economic status of their parents should not exclude them from care that is appropriate and empathetic. We can’t keep expecting our society to pull themselves up by their proverbial “boot straps” when we don’t help the most vulnerable members. Going back to the insurance issue, this creates a very difficult situation for providers, as insurance companies don’t compensate us fairly enough to open our doors to everyone - even if we wanted to.

-If/As a woman, how has your gender impacted your decision to pursue a medical career?

I am not sure my gender affected my decision to become a dentist, aside from my mom being a pretty vocal advocate for the NOW movement. She made sure I believed that my gender should not be a barrier to my goals. If I wanted to be a leader, I did not have to conform to the traditional expectations for women.

-To what extent do you feel that you owe a debt to your fellow man? To what extent do you owe a debt to those less fortunate than yourself?

I feel like living in a community where people lift each other up is important. I am not sure about owing anyone a debt, I just want to sleep at night and be good to people. I want people to know I care, and they can count on me to show up. That is how I want to be seen, both, professionally and personally.

-Discuss your decision to pursue medicine. When did you decide to become a DDS, and why?

I decided to become a dentist while in high school. Originally, I wanted to pursue something more artistic - like a Broadway dancer or Fashion Design. In fact, I was originally accepted to The University of Texas as a double major in Fashion Design and Marketing. The trouble with those avenues is they rely heavily on the opinion of others, and I was concerned about job stability. I spent a lot of time with my orthodontist and saw that smile design is also artistic and beautiful, and I could do something with job security that was also kind of artistic. I also appreciated the opportunity to own my business.

-What would you like your medical profession legacy to be?

My focus in my practice is education of the patient and the parent or caregiver and self-esteem. I really want my families to learn something about self-care. Recently, I have been working on making sure I continue to improve my delivery of this information. I feel like dentists are always telling people how they need to do this or that better, and it sounds like we are scolding people. What I really want to do is help my patients learn to care for themselves, for their own health, livelihood, and self-esteem. It isn’t supposed to be some kind of beat-down. With the self-esteem part, I feel like that is one of the most important things I can respect and inspire. So many of my patients are struggling with identity and selfworth issues. I feel like I am very good and always improving in my comprehension and sensitivity to the issues plaguing our youth. I want to be a safe space for people and hope that my respect of them helps them developtheir respect for themselves.

My name is Leo Alaniz I am a San Antonio native born and raised. I am a nutritionist, sports massage therapist, and personal trainer. I discovered my love for fitness at an early age, but growing up in a single parent home I struggled immensely with proper nutrition. It was during my studies at the University of the Incarnate Word where I really found my love for nutrition; given my constant encounters with illness in high school due to a weak immune system I really saw the value in what I was learning over the course of the program.

At the age of 38 I still compete competitively in triathlons and the occasional meet. I believe true teachers always live in practice. If you are just getting started into fitness or have had a period of time over a year where you were out of the gym I always recommend starting with body weight movements! Pilates and functional hitt are great styles of training that are lower impact on joints allowing for less injury occurrences.

Health and fitness go hand in hand but are not necessarily the same. Health is by far most important and involves proper sleep, nutrition, and hygiene practices. Fitness is important specifically for our bio mechanics, muscle integrity, organ function, and if fitness is not present “health” can quickly decline. When both health and fitness practices are consistent it is amazing to see how quickly the body can repair!

A few supplements i would recommend would be a general vitamin preferably methylated for optimal absorption and minimal toxicity. A great general vitamin goes a long was as our current food supply leaves much to be desired nutritionally. Another supplement is Creatine which is the only ergogenic aid proven to build strength by up to 33% with in 3 months.

In the next 5 years I see my business having 3 locations where practitioners will provide pain relief massage therapy as well as trainers to review mobility work for the clients gradually correcting problem areas as they follow homework provided. Through the website platform I would also like to provide video health and nutrition counseling as I currently do, but on a larger more streamlined lined scale. I would also like to create a health program for kids in school offering cool ways to eat right and how eating right helps us stay feeling well.

In my first few years as a nutritionist I found it very difficult to coach clients and was close to throwing in the towel at times.. however my genuine love for encouraging and lifting others up kept me in it for the win! Communication, experience, and real understanding are something education cannot buy.. I found myself at a massive

learning curve in the start of my career. Over the years, I can confidently say I have not worked with anyone I could not help that was not willing to try!

My best advice to someone who finds themselves constantly starting and stopping would be to cut your workouts in half! Yes, that’s right in half! One of the most common oversights I will highlight during intake is the amount of activity done at the start of a clients fitness regime. If you haven’t ran or lifted weights in a while it is a complete shock to the body and takes time to adjust to the new stress it’s undergoing. Often times, when making a commitment to get healthy again a client is better off doing light weight to body weight interval workouts; Once proficient can transfer to weights. I often see the best results with this kind of transition.

I really do believe we all have unique skill sets and some come more naturally to us than others. With that being said I do my best to re direct clients with patience and motivation. I am told what makes me a great coach is my ability to see myself in the clients shoes. I believe there is a lot of value in really being able to feel and understand circumstances that may be outside of my personal experience. Health

Mind Body Soul Fitness was founded in 2005 by owner and personal trainer Josh Levine in the Alamo Heights neighborhood of San Antonio, TX. A yoga, pilates, and 24hour training gym in the Southtown neighborhood opened in 2009. Why did you decide to get in the business of health &

fitness?

After years of exercise being a panacea for my challenges, I realized that helping others attain what I discovered was the potential for harmony and well-being in one’s life.

Why are you in this type of

fitness?

My initial background was in strength and

conditioning and yoga, but I quickly realized there were many options and ways to get fit. I realized we needed a diverse team as I got to know other health and wellness practitioners in Pilates, sports science, meditation, functional movement, and culture creation. Joshua Levine, the founder of MBS Fitness, is a dedicated advocate for integrating a multitude of health and wellness options into one’s lifestyle.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

We continue to develop new projects while maintaining and improving our original locations with an eye toward outdoor and nature immersion retreats in the mountains of the Sangre de Cristos in Colorado.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, and what is the reason that this business exists?

It starts with MBS, which stands for mind, body, and soul. We create that through movement and embodiment practices. The opportunity to have solid relationships with talented trainers and instructors who have chosen to commit their careers to being a part of the concept of MBS in their own way.

What do you tell clients who are looking for instant results?

Natural, sustainable change takes time and commitment to a consistent regimen.

What are your most outstanding achievements and significant milestones to date?

(please provide a timeline if possible) Starting in 2004 with a small personal training business that moved into multiple locations and developing a group of the best movement and wellness experts that is offered in San Antonio through the challenges of small business entrepreneurship, the pandemic crisis, and rising costs, and now going on twenty years, a pillar of the community.

What evaluations do you conduct with a new client

eager to begin a healthy skincare regimen?

We offer free skin analysis/consultations at the spa that allows us the opportunity to understand and solve skincare concerns our clients are having, such as acne, rosacea, sun damage and even aging concerns. Consultations help us to identify concerns based on many things, including their habits and home care regimen. With the skin being the largest organ of the human body, its main function is to protect. Oftentimes, clients think more is better and will overuse products - this will sensitize the skin. Other reasons for sensitivities are caused by fragrances and preservatives found in many products that can irritate the skin. And lastly, the people using nothing at all....which is not good, either. This makes the skin “reactive,” and oftentimes, this reaction scares the client into “thinking” they are sensitive, when, in actuality, the skin is simply reacting because it is not familiar with a skin care regimen. Another example is when a client says they are oily. We then ask, “Are you moisturizing?” Ninety-nine percent of the time, they are not. Their reasoning is because their skin already feels oily, and they do not want to make it “more” oily. They are doing everything to keep it oil-free by washing with harsh cleansers and using witch hazel to keep their skin “feeling” squeaky clean. Whenever we hear this, we explain to them how the skin works. The skin requires moisture, just like our bodies require drinking water. If we do not moisturize the skin, it will moisturize it for us. How? By over-producing oil! The skin will overcompensate because you are not giving it the hydration it needs. Whenever we explain this, we always hear, “Ohhhhh! That makes

sense!” Our consultations are a time to teach our clients how to care for their skin in order to reach the goals they are wanting.

Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

Competition is all around me. There are small boutique spas, like mine, to 16,000 square foot luxury hotel spas on the Riverwalk within a couple of miles from me. competition are two things. First, we use a medical grade product line that has proven results. This, in and of itself, sets us apart because of the results-oriented facial treatments we offer. And yes, we offer luxurious spa facials that incorporate relaxing modalities, such as Gua Sha and Cryo Globe facial massage. However, it is our product line that wins them over. The second and most important thing is the relationships we develop with our clients from the moment they step in the door. Many of my clients have been with me since even before I opened my namesake spa in the Tobin Hill neighborhood - just a few blocks from the Pearl. Our clients become friends...many of them have been with me so long that I have watched their children grow up from elementary school and now entering or graduating from college! It’s really a beautiful thing. You don’t get that everywhere because many of these franchise type spas are more about quantity and selling memberships and products - while we are about building trust and treating the skin. And yes, that does include selling our products. However, we are selling products because we understand our customers’ concerns, and we have the solutions that will help.

What do you tell clients who are looking for instant results?

Ahh, the Instant Results Syndrome! We all want results NOW, and like most things with health and fitness....it doesn’t work that way. There’s no doubt that after a facial, your skin will immediately feel and even look better. Facials instantly smooth out rough/textured skin, soothes irritated and inflamed skin, and even looks brighter. However, when working with problematic skin, like acne, melasma, sun damage and deep wrinkling - we often say, “Trust the process”

because it WILL take some time. And with acne, oftentimes, it can also get worse before it gets better. Any dermatologist will agree. It’s important for us to tell our clients about the 80/20 rule. That means that 80% of healthy skin starts at home. Using the right ingredients and being consistent at it are key factors. The other 20% is being consistent with professional facial treatments because the products that a licensed professional uses in the treatment room cannot be sold due to its professional grade and potency. When a client gets discouraged, it’s usually because they are not following this rule.

What are your thoughts on OTC (over-the-counter) products vs medical grade products?

There are many effective over-the-counter products available that I have no problem giving a thumbs-up to. However, I know, from years of experience as an esthetician and educator, medical grade products give far better results. As the term suggests, medical grade products are only available through a dermatologist/plastic surgeon or licensed professional, such as an esthetician. Medical grade products go through rigorous testing and are backed by scientific research. These products are developed to have potent active ingredients which, in turn, equate to more visible results. Overthe-counter products are limited to the potency of the active ingredient, which does not allow it to penetrate deep into the skin. The reason why medical grade products offer better results is because they are developed to penetrate through the epidermis and into the dermis (the first and second layers of the skin.) See for yourself. The next time someone purchases an over-thecounter “retinol” or “hyaluronic acid” product - take a look at the ingredients on the back. You’ll likely have to read through a dozen other ingredients before finding either of those ingredients in that list.

What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

The skin is tricky. It is not a one size fits all. What I mean by that is that one client might start seeing results within the first two to three facial treatments, while another may not begin to see a difference until their fifth Health

or sixth facial treatment, but when that happens and we start seeing results...it is so rewarding, particularly, when working on someone who has been dealing with acne or hyperpigmentation (discoloration) issues for many years.

What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

Ugh! My greatest challenge is all the crazy and ineffective skincare trends that “skinfluencers” are posting on social media. I can’t tell you how many clients tell me about this or that they learned, or products they are using recommended by someone on TikTok. The problem with this is that these “skinfluencers” are not licensed professionals. I’ll even go as far as saying that they are probably using a filter and aren’t even using the products they are recommending. Eeeesh… Don’t get me started. LOL

Great skin requires consistency and even then it can take up to six weeks before you begin to see significant results depending on your concerns. Many people don’t want to wait that long to allow a certain product/ingredient and “skin cycle” which doesn’t allow them the opportunity to know what’s working or not! With so much advice and products out there it can be very confusing and hard to know how to treat your skin - often time making it worse. Something that is important to know is that one size does not fit all when it comes to a skincare routine. What works for others may not work for you which is why there are so many different products available. However, there are a few simple skin care basics that is a good start to healthy skin.

• Cleanse your face twice daily. Once in the morning and before bedtime.

• Tone your skin. This helps get the skin’s PH level back to normal after cleansing.

• Morning -Moisturize and protect your skin with an SPF - even though you’re not going to a pool party or the beach for the day.

Evening - Moisturize your skin every evening.

• And yes, that includes oily skin types too.

When it comes to seeking advise, seek out a license skin professional. Schedule a consultation where you can discuss the products you are using on a daily basis (which is often times part of the problem). Consultations will allow you to discuss your skin type/sensitivities and concerns and a licensed professional will be able to determine a treatment plan and home care routine/products

Those who have never had facials before and have problematic skin are always so pleasantly surprised at how quickly the skin responds when using the correct ingredients and staying consistent with a home care routine and regular visits to a license esthetician.

How long have you been in business?

37 years ago, I started my chiropractic practice in California. When I got into practice, I brought in a couple of massage therapists to help me with my clients. I had become very interested in soft tissue work as I was going through chiropractic school in the early 80s, and I found in my practice that the soft tissue work added a dimension to client success that wasn’t there with the chiropractic work by itself. So, for many years I studied soft tissue work and integrated it more and more into my own chiropractic practice. In 2005 I sold my practice in California and moved to Texas as a retirement. We laugh about this now because I lasted 5 days as a retired person before I had the idea of opening a massage center in Texas. The idea behind the massage center was to do the kind of work that we were doing in the chiropractic practice, which was a more therapeutic type of massage as opposed to the spa type massage that was readily available just about anywhere.

We found that it was difficult to find this therapeutic level work and people became very interested in it as they experienced it. The business grew very rapidly because of this level of interest from clients.

How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?

Technology has definitely had an impact on our business. For example, today approximately half of all our visits are scheduled online. Folks are going to the Internet, choosing our business, clicking on our website and scheduling an appointment by themselves completely based on the information available through the web. We don’t have any interaction with them until they walk through the door.

Are there any ethical concerns that your type of business must deal with? if so, How do you overcome these ethical problems?

Unfortunately for the past 150 years massage was associated with and often a cover for sexually explicit behaviors. This began to change in the late 60s, 70s, and 80s. Massage has now reached a state of recognition as a medical benefit, but even today there are little pockets of businesses where massage is a bit of a front for some type of sexual activity. Because of this, some clients may have the wrong idea about massage and come in asking for various questionable sexual activities.

So, there are issues of clients not understanding the true nature of therapeutic massage. This is becoming less and less of a problem but there continues to be a slight element existing today. On the other side of this, you have the issue of therapist misbehaviors. We do approxi

mately 600 massages a day between all of our clinics. Every other year or so we will have a situation in one of our clinics where one of our own therapists behaves inappropriately to our clients. These are ethical considerations that are always with us and we are constantly training on these issues.

What is your management style?

This is a very big question! I’ve actually written an entire 350-page book on this topic. I feel very strongly that management style is integrated and combined with business philosophy. In our business philosophy we seek highly qualified team members. Then we spend an exorbitant amount of money to train these individuals to be the best they can possibly be at their jobs. In years past, we have spent as much as $500,000 a year on training our staff. Another aspect of our philosophy is that we treat our team members not only like we would want to be treated, but we treat them like family. It possibly sounds a little trite… but we really do feel this way. We also believe in rewarding our people. Our salaries and benefit packages are some of the highest in the industry. For example, our top people will be going on a cruise next week in the Caribbean to be rewarded for their excellence. I could go on and on with these examples of how we as a business have made the conscious decision to go above and beyond what most employees have experienced or will experience in their working lives, this philosophy of treating people well forms the foundation of our management style and our business philosophy.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed?

This question allows me to speak about another aspect of our business philosophy. We believe that everyone works for their own personal reasons. These reasons vary widely from person to person. We believe that one of the ways people achieve success is by connecting with their reasons why they go to work every day. For some it is to afford a family vacation or saving for college. For others it is to be able to supplement their work at a nonprofit or a church that they believe in but aren’t getting paid to work in. We believe the secret of success is for people to really connect with why it is they get out of bed every morning. In my case it’s to provide for my family and to serve our customers at the highest possible level. So those two things would be my personal “why”.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

I believe the future is bright for therapeutic body work. People are looking for ways to address musculoskeletal issues and problems that don’t involve powerful drugs or surgery. The style of body work that we do is extremely effective for many types of conditions including (but of course not limited to) headaches, shoulder and arm pain, back pain, neck pain, hip pain, knee pain, and foot pain. Many of the conditions that people suffer with can be significantly addressed with therapeutic body work. We believe it’s just a matter of helping people to learn about this method of treatment.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

Wow… now there is an interesting and potentially lengthy question to answer! Michael Gerber wrote a book back in the early 80s called “The E- Myth.” In this book he described a situation where people that have specific skills like a TV technician or a dentist or a doctor will take that skill and decide they want to open a business. So, the TV repairman opens up a TV repair shop. A dentist opens a dental business. A doctor opens a medical practice. The challenge with this is that each of these people have skills in their respective field but they are not necessarily prepared for the challenges of business. They have no training in business, and no particular skills in business. They have the skills of their trade or profession. This is a huge dilemma in the business world, and this book had a profound impact on me and opened my eyes to the necessity of developing these very necessary skills. I was lucky enough early on in our experience with Oak Haven Massage to come across Vistage. Vistage is an organization of CEO’s where the CEO’s meet once a month to discuss business concepts and have speakers from various disciplines. We counsel together, we coach each other, and act as resources for each other. We currently have 5 individuals from our organization that are

members of Vistage. I’ve been involved for the past 12 or 13 years and this organization has made all the difference for us. It has allowed me to have a resource to learn and continue to develop the business side of my skill set and not just the professional side. How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

Social issues play a part in our business in that the world is drifting away from tradi-

tional drugs and surgery for muscle-based problems and are open to trying a more conservative, natural approach. Economic issues come into play in that we are definitely subject to downturns in the economy and interest rates. Interest rates affect us in terms of ability to expand and purchase land, equipment, and buildings. We do not have a lot of susceptibility to environmental, legal and political environments. Recently a technological change has come into our business in the form of mechanical massage machines that potentially could impact our business. It’s a little too early to tell yet what the impact of these will have on

the industry. We are in the initial stages of experimentation and investigation into some of this equipment.

Do you know who competitors are?

You could think of our business as having two parts: the standard massage part of our business and the therapeutic body work side of our business. On the massage side, our competition is franchise massage studios such as Massage Envy and Massage Heights. There are several others that could

be a factor such as Hand and Stone and Elements. There are also numerous individual private businesses as well as large spas such as Woodhouse and various spas at hotels.

On the therapeutic body side, we have virtually no competition at all. There is almost nobody that has ventured into this arena.

How are people made aware of your business?

This is an interesting question. Over the years we have tried many ways to attract

clients to our business. We have tried traditional advertising methods, online advertising methods - such as Google Adwords - and have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to find an effective way to bring in clients. The bulk of traditional advertising and traditional online strategies have proven to be very ineffective for us. We’re not quite sure why. The one thing that has grown our business from day one is referrals from satisfied customers. We get almost 1,800 new clients every month from referrals exclusively from our existing clientele. This has proved to be the most effective way for us to grow our business.

Do you plan to compete in the global market place? If yes, how? If no, why not?

We are currently a regional business serving Central Texas (Austin and San Antonio) with four locations and one in South Austin currently in the pipeline. We have no plans to move out of Central Texas and become anything more than a regional business. The main reason for this is that to keep the quality of our business where we want it to be it requires very hands-on management. It’s a tremendous challenge to recruit the kind of people that we’re looking to recruit. And it would be very difficult to do this at scale. We’re very happy to have our four or five locations and serve our customers with what we think is the best body work available.

Whom do you seek advice from for your type of business?

As mentioned previously we are very committed to our membership in Vistage. We also have a number of consultants and

ongoing trainings designed specifically for CEO’s. In addition to this, we foster relationships with other business owners and are in continual correspondence and discussions with them on all aspects of business such as human resources, marketing, etc.

Do you have a business plan to operate your business?

I don’t know that we operate under a business plan in the traditional sense. We have a document that we call the Oak Haven Playbook. In this playbook we document what we believe and what has worked for us in the past so that we can continue it in the future. We operate our business under our stated business philosophies that I alluded to previously.

Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?

We’ve struggled with the concept of a mission statement over the years. What we’ve settled on at this point is a document entitled, “A Mission That Matters.” This is a 20-page document in which we outline how our work benefits our customers and what we hope our customers experience from their interaction with our business.

Can you describe your customers?

Our typical customer may be male or female, aged 40 to 60 years old. They have

above average income and are looking to receive help in various muscle-based problems, such as neck pain, back pain, etcetera. They’re looking for high quality services at an affordable price. They also value availability. We have approximately 700 slots open per day across our company, which gives people the opportunity to call in and within a few hours get in to see one of our therapists.

Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

Our customers tell us they come in to us initially and stay with us because of the high level of training, experience, and effectiveness of our massage therapists.

What are the biggest issues for running your type of business?

Hiring and retaining high quality professional body workers.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date (please provide a timeline if possible)

I think my proudest moment was several years ago when we were named the top work place in San Antonio.

What three pieces of advice would you give others

in

your line of business today?

Have the patience to keep interviewing until you find the best possible people.

Figure out a way to pay them an above average salary.

Show appreciation to your staff and team and do what you can to retain them.

What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

We meet people every day who have been to all kinds of practitioners to try to solve a particular problem and it’s so gratifying when we’re able to help them when others were unable.

What

would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

We have 250 people that work at Oak Haven. People are our greatest blessing… but they can also be our greatest challenge. It can be very taxing to hear about people’s heartaches. It can be very challenging to be with people as they go through illness, financial hardships, loss of relationships, or difficulty with children.

What would you say are the top three attitudes anyone should have in business?

A desire to serve the customer at the highest possible level. A desire to recruit, train, and retain a

high-level team. Always be truthful with your team.

In

your line of business, what motivates you?

At this stage of the game my biggest motivation is trying to make the business better and better and resist the alluring force of mediocracy.

How do you define success?

I think someone is a success if: They experience happiness and joy on a regular basis.

The people who know you the best…. love you the most.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My uncle, Ray Shuel, who taught me how to treat people.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

I will turn 70 next year. So, I’m in the final stages of turning the business over to my daughters to run. My oldest daughter, Allison Moreno, is our current CEO and has been really running the company for the last 10 years. Rebecca Shuel manages our Austin region.

Who I am,

My name is Patricia Romero, I am a happily married woman with 4 children. I come from a very close knit-family and have been practicing natural healing for over 15 years.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, in also a Lab Technician, and Meso-Therapist. This path has led me to pursue other degrees as Cosmetologist and Naturopath.

My daughter Andrea’s death, and my subsequent divorce led me to find a new path in life. While trying to overcome these different obstacles in my life through occupational therapy, I found my calling. I found life through grief.

Being a Naturopath has led me to experience the beauty of health and well-being. I am certified in the United States, Mexico, and Spain.

What have I done,

During my studies as a Naturopath and fascinated with my new knowledge, I founded my company “MedNatura” together with my husband. I started putting into practice my new knowledge within MedNatura services. It was fascinating the assertive results I obtained from our patients, as well as the healing of their diseases through the natural therapies applied. During the pandemic we helped many ill post-Covid people, recovering from the great deterioration of their entire system.

I really believe in the power of doing good through helping the community, which is why I always try to be actively involved with the people who need it the most. Here in Texas, I began volunteering with young immigrants in shelters for more than 8 years. It was a very powerful experience; we tried to understand their pain and experiences, while also trying to help them have more faith in themselves.

I have organized different fundraisers for various causes (golf tournaments, help seminarians and scholarships), and I also volunteer with the Josephine Sisters. This has been a very fulfilling experience because I’ve had the opportunity of learning so much through their life story. I also lead support groups for women like me, who have suffered the loss of a child. Through open heart discussions, we have conversations about our grief and find comfort among each other.

Where am I going,

Our mission is to help maintain and recover the health of our patients. We empower and partner our patients and our community for a lifetime of health on the path to wellness, transformation, and wholeness. It is inevitable to speak of the pandemic as something of the past, since we are still recovering from our respiratory, endocrine, digestive, and mental systems among others. What does health & fitness mean to you?

For me, health and fitness are a huge part of not just my physical but also mental well-being. While I love endurance sports, I strive to find a balance between cardio and strength. As we get older, especially in women, it’s so important to perform weight bearing exercises to keep our bones and joints strong. Also, for me, striving for health and fitness has been a way of preventing diabetes. This is a condition that runs rampant in my family and I try hard to eat better and always exercise to keep my heart strong and my sugar levels healthy.

Are there any books you can recommend for a healthy and fit lifestyle?

I recently read a book called, Atomic Habits, by James Clear, and found it to be inspirational in all walks of life, whether it be sports, your profession or, in general, your daily outlook on life. The book provides tips on how to improve your life or goals by one percent everyday. It teaches readers how teaches readers how to adopt good habits and eliminate bad habits.

Do you recommend joining health and fitness clubs to reach your health & fitness goals?

More than joining a fitness club, I think it’s a much better idea to find a group of people with the same interests who can work out with you. Like a run club, cycling group, walking group..etc..That’s more motivating than a gym club that you may never attend

if there’s no one there to hold you accountable. Of course, you could always hire a trainer, but that is also expensive.

Are there any supplements you’d recommend for a healthy body?

I am currently taking supplements that were recommended by my doctor. as you get older, especially for women, it’s super important to take calcium and vitamin D supplements. I take that plus fish oil, biotin, ashwaghanda , and glucosamine chondroitin. To help build and maintain muscle, I like to take creatine when I am working out.

How do you keep your health & fitness training knowledge up to date?

I am currently working on my Masters in Digital Audience Strategy through Arizona State. I am also getting some new certifications in personal training and nutrition though NASM.

Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next two years? Who are your customers?

With the instruction I am receiving now, in the next few years I see myself teaching at a local university and also coaching clients. I don’t have any current customers, but my ideal customer would be someone in their 40s, 50s and older who is trying to regain or improve their fitness and health.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date?

I love long distance running and have qualified for the Boston Marathon five times, but I’ve run it four times. I’ve completed 5 half Ironman races and 6 full Ironman races, including a qualification for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2023. I also competed as a natural pro bodybuilder for 4 years from 2016 to 2019.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET IN THE BUSINESS OF HEALTH AND FITNESS?

Prior to opening The Muscle Factory in 2008, I competed in bodybuilding and had a great passion for the sport. The more knowledge I gained, I knew I wanted to not only compete, but help others achieve their goals and coach upcoming competitors. I slowly transitioned into 100% coaching due to my hectic schedule with clients.

WHY ARE YOU IN THIS TYPE OF HEALTH AND FITNESS?

I have always been drawn to bodybuilding, the competitiveness, and discipline that comes with the sport. I played soccer for over 12 years prior and 2 years wrestling. Both sports were gratifying, but bodybuilding is a one-man sport. It’s you against you. I have an appreciation for the process a bodybuilder goes through to get ready for shows, so my experience has helped me help others reach their potential.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS AND SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES TO DATE?

Having a gym that has thrived over 16-years is a great achievement for a small business owner. My wife, Marissa, and I started The Muscle Factory together with only 60 members in a 2400 square foot facility with used equipment other gyms sold either from upgrading or closing. Today, The Muscle Factory has over 700 members in a 10,500 square

foot facility. We have everything from old school workout equipment to state-ofthe-art workout equipment such as Prime equipment and Arsenal Strength equipment. Although my wife, Marissa, passed away during covid, she is very much a part of the success of The Muscle Factory. In addition, I have coached over 18 competitors that have reached their IFBB Pro status starting with Olympian IFBB Pro, Lenore Gregson in 2013. I have also helped another IFBB Pro reach Olympian status, Jenna DeManincor. The Muscle Factory has the most IFBB Pro’s in San Antonio, Texas, which is a great achievement!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SATISFYING MOMENT IN YOUR HEALTH AND FITNESS LIFESTYLE OR BUSINESS CAREER?

I love what I do. It is extremely gratifying to see members and clients grow and meet their personal goals. To watch a client transform day in and day out makes it worth coming in every day. It doesn’t feel like work when you love what you are doing.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AND WORK EXPERIENCE IN HEALTH AND FITNESS?

I am certified in personal training through ACE and have over 22-years as a coach.

DOES YOUR BUSINESS HAVE A STATED MISSION STATEMENT, THE REASON THAT THIS BUSINESS EXISTS?

The name of the gym pretty much says it all. “The Muscle Factory” is where muscles are made and fitness goals are met.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CUSTOMERS?

There are two types of customers The Muscle Factory has. One, a client that specifically wants to compete and get on stage. Two, members who want to improve their wellbeing and body transformation. Both types gain confidence and a love for working out being around others at the gym because you are surrounded by several knowledgeable IFBB Pro’s and coaches.

If I’m remembered as a great coach that ran a good business, I have done my job. My success is the clients that succeed, reach their dreams in competing and fitness level. That, to me, is the most rewarding legacy I can be remembered for.

As a fitness professional and business owner, health and fitness to me is about continuous growth and transformation. It’s the journey of becoming the best version of myself—physically, mentally, and emotionally—while inspiring others to do the same. My passion is helping others realize that fitness is more than just a workout; it’s about building a strong foundation for a fulfilled life. Why did you decide to get in the business of health & fitness?

I decided to get into the business of health and fitness because I saw how transformative it could be in my own life and wanted to share that with others. After working for a big gym, I realized that I could offer something different—something more personalized and focused on lasting results. I wanted to create my own concept and programs that truly catered to the unique needs of my clients, providing a high-quality, less intimidating environment where they could feel supported and empowered. My goal has always been to deliver not just a service, but a long-term solution for people who are looking to become healthier, stronger, and more confident in themselves. It’s about building real connections and helping people unlock their full potential, just as I continue to strive toward my own.

What’s more important, health or fitness?

Or can one not live without the other? Are they equally important?

When I think about health and fitness, I don’t see them as separate things—they really go hand in hand. Health is the foundation that allows us to feel good, live long, and function at our best, while fitness gives us the physical strength, endurance, and resilience to take on life’s challenges. In my own experience, focusing on fitness— building strength, improving endurance, and staying active—has had a huge impact on my overall health. It’s helped me manage stress, keep my energy up, and maintain a positive mindset. But I’ve also learned that fitness alone isn’t enough. True health comes from a combination of physical activity, good nutrition, mental well-being, and rest. You can’t neglect one without it affecting the other.

To me, health and fitness are equally important. When they work together, that’s when we really thrive and feel our best. It’s not about choosing one or the other—it’s about finding balance and making them both a priority.

Do you like the word diet or prefer healthy eating?

Personally, I prefer the term “healthy eating” over “diet.” The word “diet” often comes with negative connotations of restriction or temporary fixes, while “healthy eating” is about creating sustainable, balanced habits that nourish the body over the long term. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about fueling your body with the right nutrients to support your goals, energy levels, and overall

well-being. Healthy eating is a lifestyle that allows for flexibility and enjoyment, rather than a rigid, short-term approach. That’s what I encourage my clients to focus on— making choices that support their health for the long haul.

What is your background? Education, Work Experience in health & fitness?

How long have you been in business?

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Psychology from Angelo State University, where I also completed an internship at a medical facility, working with cardiac and pulmonary rehab patients as well as focusing on senior and women’s fitness. After graduating, I moved to San Antonio and began my career as a Personal Trainer at Racquetball & Fitness from 2000 to 2004. During my time there, I immersed myself in every educational opportunity available, which transformed what started as a job into a true passion.

I decided to take my own fitness journey to the next level, competing in Figure, Bikini, and Fitness Model competitions with various organizations over the years. One of the highlights was being named Ms. Fit American Beauty in 2015. My passion for fitness also extends to dance. As a former NCA All-American Cheerleader, college cheerleader, and semi-professional team member, I’ve always incorporated dance into my fitness routine. I’ve taught cheerleading and dance in college and have choreographed and performed in several musical theatre productions, continuing that love for movement today. I’ve been in the fitne

I hold multiple certifications through NASM and AFAA in Personal Training, Group Fitness, Bodybuilding, and Physique Coaching, along with numerous specialty certifications in nutrition, lifestyle, and fitness coaching. Staying current in the field is essential to me, and I regularly attend conferences and earn CEUs to ensure I’m always offering the best to my clients.

Do you know who your competitors are?

I don’t really view others in the industry as competitors. I believe that the people who are meant to work with me will naturally find their way to me. My focus is always on setting the example by living the lifestyle I promote, practicing what I preach, and staying authentic to my mission. By doing so, I attract clients who are inspired by my approach and resonate with my message. It’s less about competing with others and more about helping those who align with my philosophy and are ready to take that next step in their journey.

What do you tell clients who are looking for instant results?

If someone is looking to jumpstart their progress and speed up results, I explain that it’s definitely possible—but the quicker you want results, the more disciplined and strict you need to be. This often means creating a more significant calorie deficit by both reducing calorie intake and increasing calorie expenditure through exercise. However, I emphasize that while this approach can accelerate progress, it’s important to do it in a healthy and sustainable way. Extreme measures can lead to burnout or setbacks, so I work with clients to strike a balance between pushing for faster results and maintaining a plan that supports long-term success and well-being.

What would you say are the top three skills anyone should have in the business of health & fitness?

Besides having the necessary knowledge and education, I believe the top three skills anyone should have in the health and fitness business are communication, empathy, and adaptability.

Communication is key because being able to clearly explain concepts, motivate clients, and provide feedback in a way that resonates is crucial for their success. Empathy is equally important—understand-

ing where clients are coming from, their struggles, and their personal journeys allows you to offer real support and guidance. It’s about building trust and creating a safe space where clients feel heard and valued. Lastly, adaptability is essential. Every client is different, and being able to adjust your approach, workouts, and coaching style to meet individual needs ensures that you’re always offering the best experience and path to results. These three skills, paired with the right knowledge base, are the foundation for truly helping clients transform their lives.

In the business of health & fitness, what motivates you?

What really motivates me in the health and fitness industry is seeing the incredible transformations my clients go through—not just physically, but in their health and overall lives. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching someone build confidence, get stronger, and realize they’re capable of so much more than they ever thought. Those moments, when they start to feel and live better, are what truly inspire me. Knowing that I’m playing a part in helping someone achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves is what keeps me passionate and motivated every day.

I’d love for my health and fitness legacy to be about more than just physical transformation—it’s about empowering others to realize their potential, both in fitness and in life. My goal has always been to educate, motivate, and inspire people to push beyond their limits and embrace a lifestyle of growth, confidence, and resilience. I want people to remember me as someone who helped them not just achieve their fitness goals but also instilled in them a belief in their own greatness. If I can leave behind a legacy of helping others feel stronger, more confident, and capable of anything they set their minds to, then I’ve done my job.
