"Sete Palmos de Vida" was the name of the show, directed by Rafaela Santos presented at Teatro Viriato. This is a project of the company “Lugar Presente in collaboration with Teatro Viriato, in Viseu, called "Sentido Criativo", which aims to introduce theatre, specifically acting, to young people who are curious about it. This was the first theatre production I participated on. We were a group of six girls, so we decided show the metamorphoses of the multiple emotional states of a teenage girl. Miss Depressed, against Miss Revolutionary, Miss Passionate, Miss Confused, Miss Serious and Miss Ridiculous, fighting a war, each one struggling to mark a position. Seven bits of life fight for life itself.

Teatro Viriato (Viseu) sponsored a theatre group of teenagers willing to participate in the project PANOS, promoted by Culturgest, which aims to integrate the teenage theatre with contemporary writing. "Gino Ginete", by Armando Silva Carvalho, is the story based on the murder of the transsexual Gisberta, by a group of adolescents of Porto, converted into a tale. From the Dream world to the grotesque, telling the life of Gino Ginette in three acts. From the definition of gender in a hall of mirrors, through a dance of bas-fonds, ending in her violent death. Director: Graeme Pulleyn, Set and Costumes: Helen Ainsworth; Lighting Design: Cristóvão Cunha; Video: Yann Thual. I played the roles of the priest and the transsexual. It was the first time I had contact with a production team. And the first "tour" among schools and theaters in Viseu, Guarda, Moimenta da Beira and Lisbon. This show was my biggest motivation to keep rummaging the "melting pot" (theatre) searching for the "magic potion" that feeds us with fantasy.

"Escudos Humanos" by Patricia Portela, is a story of people in time of war, who rise up against the inconsistencies of the system and decide to go to the country under attack to be human shields and keep the war from happening. This was my second participation in this project (PANOS – Portuguese version of Connections, of the National Theatre), with a group from Teatro Viriato (Viseu), directed by Graeme Pulleyn, this time, as a directing assistant. Together, we planed the rehearsals and developed ideas for staging the play. It was a great opportunity to realize what can be done to make a group of people that barely know each other work as a teem with the same target, as developing an intimacy with the play through the point of view the director wants them to think about it .

This was my first Set Design Project for the play "4:48 Psychosis" by Sarah Kane, for a contest sponsored by "As Boas Raparigas". In my design, I tried to associate the main character to an object. So, feelings of anger, agitation, despair, claustrophobia and suffocation would be concentrated in a closed "core", with limited space, projecting fragments representing multiple fractions of herself to the outside. It consists in a set of ropes connected to the "core" crossing the whole structure from the interior to the exterior, tying the actress inside the structure, whose movements in order to release from the web, are magnified by the imbalance of the structure that balances and runs (but never falls). And, well, out of this, the "fragments" (actors) attached to ropes also control the movement of the structure. One side is made of a textile material, allowing among other things light projection, images, video ... Examples: "Character-core" live prospects ... very close, deformed, with contrast effects, filters,... multiplication of mouths, eyes, faces, ... Another facet of the pyramid is made of a transparent material, alluding to the television screen - framework within which the observed character feels exposed, vulnerable,...

This was a school project for Set Design and Costumes Classes, in which we had to design the set and costumes for "Auto da Índia", by Gil Vicente as it was to be presented at Teatro Nacional de S. João. The play is about a woman that had some affairs while her husband, who she didn't like, was away in India. The play reduces Portuguese men, seen as Heroes in the XV century, to simple humans that make mistakes, are fooled by their wives; build magnificent houses, but never a home... I wanted to design a set that showed the redemption of the main character to her own pleasure, whose home is built based on that subject. So, the house, that should represent familiar union, are 2 giant and desirous female legs. God, who punishes man for their sins, takes body in the mistress lovers, who are dressed like gods, creating some humorous irony as she tells her husband, when he comes back that she’s spent all the time he was away praying. The climax scene of the play is when the mistress is having sex with her favorite lover - jumping on a trampoline, in the set's sexual organ, while the Legs rotate, showing the husband, struggling to survive in the ocean.

This was a school project for the Props Class. In order to learn the papier-maché technique, we made an animal mask for the show "Músicos de Bremen", directed by José Caldas, presented at Teatro Jangada. Besides the papier-maché technique, we had to use and develop other techniques as sculpture, drawing, painting,.. I learnt that even thought theatre is an ephemeral art, while building the props we have to care about durability, resistance, functionality in scene, comfort for the actor, reaction of the color to light exposure, waste due to the rehearsals,...As the prop doesn't work on its own, its life depends on all the other elements of the show, and so do all other elements depend on each single detail of the prop.

This was a school project for Project and Design Class, in order to design the setting, costumes, light and sound for “The Birds”, Aristófanes. In a group of students from the different theatre design areas, we started by dividing the play in three times: - Before the construction of society: escape - During the construction of society: utopia - Results of the construction of society: the ridiculousness of their own initial escapism We decided that the set should be a nonplace, a place that you access through the imagination, which embodies an ideal of perfection, and the brevity of this. In the performance, the actors should raise a new society based on the principals the one they live on don’t consider, by building a wall of garbage which was all over the flour, but not noticed until the black lights turn them into colorful and florescent objects, in order to create a dreamy atmosphere. In the end, they fall into traps opened up in the flour, in the real world, where the illusion of such a "perfect society" will always be an illusion.

This Project, of staging “No Exit”, by Jean Paul Sartre, was for an Amateur Theatre Company, directed by a Professional – David Santos – and presented at Teatro Latino, Porto. The play is about 3 people that meet in hell and struggle to survive each other being there, pointing out Sartre’s thought “hell are the others”. For the set I searched for a cold, uncolored and uncomfortable environment, as hell might be instead of warm and red, as we usually illustrate it. The space should be claustrophobic and traduce human relationships.

“FUGEE”, by Aby Morgan, was written for Connections of the National Theatre, translated for PANOS to be represented by teenagers. Tells the story of Kojo, a 14 year-old boy, who witnessed the murder of his family and was forced to join a group of child soldiers to take the front line in any war, at the day of his 11th anniversary. Refugee in London, sent to a reception center, he met other children who have been through similar situations. A story of lost childhoods, tall trees and a murder in motion committed by a child that everyone says is a man.

For the 3rd time, working on this project with Graeme Pulleyn, 2nd as a directing assistant. I took part in the directing decisions to stage the play, the set design, building scenery and props, oriented by Helen Ainsworth (the set and costumes designer). I did the makeup, photographic and video registration of the show and the poster (above). It is a very interesting to work in between people with lots of experience in theatre, with lots of things to tell, and with young teenagers who are just trying it for the first time. They are getting started in the same experience I had 3 years ago, learning about theater and its implications, and above all, enjoying themselves as actors, or growing up to be more interested and demanding audiences.

" LA FAVOLA DEL PESCE CAMBIATO " tells the underwater journey of Adriano, a very special fish. La Favola del pesce cambiato, by Emma Dante, illustrated by Gianluigi Toccafondo, describes the journey of a fish called Adriano from the ocean, where he came from at the beginning of time, trough a frantic race against an unstoppable cluster of fish, until it reaches a place with so little space for swimming, but so comfortable. He could hear the most tender voice, that made him feel protected, his mother’s voice. In the performance Graeme tells and acts Adriano’s tale, Maria João (the set designer), does live visual effects with projections, and I did the sound effects playing with water, and lights using flashlights. After the performance, we also did an arts and crafts workshop with the kids, where they painted the ocean and the fish as the ones in the set, and we revealed some “tricks”, so that they could play and tell stories themselves.

This was a production, developed in Production Class, in which, the hired directors staged a Commedia del Arte version of “Midsummer Night’s dream”, by William Shakespeare. The set was to have the most free space as possible for the actors to move as the Commedia del Arte Characters. For the set, which was designed and built by the Scenography team, we tried to bring elements of a theatre stage to the outdoors performance.

In October, 2009, CEARTE promoted an intensive 60 hours workshop about puppets building and manipulation, by Marcelo La Fontana. There I learnt how this kind of puppets function, how does the control influences the puppets movements, where should the weight be concentrated, how the strings should be distributed, how to manipulate it,... Each student built his own puppet and control, which structure is in PVC and specific body parts as hands, feet and head in any material we would find suitable for what we wanted to do in the predicted timetables.

Three characters (human puppets), are trapped in the monotonous rituals of their everyday lives. Faced with the desire of reaching the apples... They use their free will to untie themselves from the ropes...They don’t know how to walk without strings but learn how to, in order to reach desire. This was a free project about the theme “What if from now on it was like this”. In my groups presentation, the audience was sitting around the stage always facing the apples. In the end they felt like eating them…

Architecture

This was a project for Architecture School, in order to develop the previous exercise, when we were to design an ideal city, to develop concepts of balance, proportion, think about the relationship between the buildings, squares and streets, according to the proportion of human unit. Thereafter, the proposal was to choose a segment of this "city" and reclassify it in order to install a cube - a public space with interior features and a fountain.

Another project for Architecture School was the design of a cafeteria at the gardens of Palรกcio de Cristal, Oporto. The big difference of heights between the garden and construction area created some difficulty in accessing cafeteria, so I designed a lift pointing out the verticality of the land. However, I considered that only one access was scarce, so, in the continuity of the pathway through the gardens, there is a staircase. This exercise made me think about the importance of defining the threshold between the Nature and Constructed, between the sheltered and unprotected. When the transition is too sharp, nature and architecture look separated. In this search, I found that varying the size of boundaries, walls, floors or roof, you can provide different environments, while embracing the building in the land, almost as if it was part of it ever since. I tried to create spaces that are distinguished by the relationship with the landscape. This relationship influences the interior of the cafeteria, and defines the different areas of the program, without having to separate them physically.

This was a school project for Art Class, which subject was to create anything that made sense to us, as an art object. I decided to do an installation about the road accidents. For this painted dented hoods and disposed these together with parts of damaged cars. There was also a tire swing and a marking corpse on the floor. By then, a friend of mine has died in a car accident, and I was for the first time in my life confronted with the idea of death. The installation was about damaged material that we produce and use to live, that can also be the cause of our death. How this objects that are so indispensible for us lose its meaning and original functionality in a second.

This was a school exercise for Arts Class in High School. As of an assembly to be made, we had to reproduce the resulting image, using the “structural elements of visual languageâ€? - dot, line, texture, gradient and color (cool colors, warm colors, warm colors contrasting with cool colors and contrasting complementary colors). Finally, we should reproduce the image tridimensionaly, by building a model as similar as possible to original image. Escola SecundĂĄria Viriato Experiences about colour and 3D models Arts Class 06

This was a School exercise for Set Design Class, which aimed to design “a place” of tribute to the song "Fiesta" by The Pogues, through the use of materials we could find in the garbage. I started to do research about the band and the context the composed the song. It was made as a result of a trip to Almeria (province of southern Spain, on the Mediterranean), in order to film "Straight to Hell," a western comedy from Alex Cox. The band's stage in Almeria coincided with an annual festival that happens around the last week of August for 9 days, known for the prodigious amount of alcohol consumed by festival-goers. "Fiesta" (partie) was essentially what brought the "The Pogues" to compose this music which letters make no sense. What makes sense for me while building them a tribute, it is to create an excuse for people to get together and just listen to "Fiesta" and make their own. Therefore, using the material that was appearing, I design the “facilities” for that to happen. The dj should play several versions of the song "Fiesta" in the loop.

Graphic Design

This was a School project for Design Class, in High School. We were proposed to design a set of 3 illustrations of any text we chose. I decided to illustrate the 3 scenes of the play "Gino Ginete”, by Armando Silva Carvalho, written for the project PANOS. I tried various compositions and plastic effects to illustrate the text, alongside I was working on it for the theatre project. Each illustration corresponds to one of the 3 scenes of the play. In the first one, the main character looks rather confused about his sexuality and personality fitting his body. He confronted with his family and society, who do not understand or accept his way of being and feeling. "The townspeople know that all their actions are both the act and its reflection in a mirror. Theire conscience forbids them to be left for a moment to random and oblivion.” "Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. In the 2nd scene, the character had left behind the masculine body he was born with. He is in a festive atmosphere, the protagonist of a travesty show, happy to dazzle all men who attend the festival with “her” sensuality and delicacy. However she doesn’t feel entirely satisfied with the life of prostitution that she is required to take due to the choice she made of becoming a girl. At her "throne" - a toilet. "The key is perhaps to know what words you must speak, what gestures to make and in what order and rhythm to perform them." “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. In the last scene, the character is in a dilapidated and fragile condition. Lives in the street, suffering from various terminal illnesses, addicted to hard drugs. Still, she is helpful and motherly with some orphans she meets by then, who, finding that Gino-Ginnete is transsexual, beat her to death. "What yesterday was a possibility for the future is now just a toy inside a glass ball." “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino.

This was a school project for Set Design Class, which aim was to illustrate the short-story "The Bomb and the General" by Umberto Eco. I started to explore the characteristics of different materials in order to design a dynamic and interactive illustration. I tried to use an electrical circuit that works in relation to the story, which makes us think that infinitely small things (as atoms and electrons) can be as strong as to destroy everything we know. But I found that the result (picture above), wasn't working as a composition, as the two parties wouldn't match, and so, there was too much visual noise, which began as an intention, but turned out not to work as a whole.

In a second attempt, I worked on some photograph effects of water and objects with transparency projected on the wall by an overhead projector.(picture above). I used cups, bottles, water, oil, food coloring fluids, plastic bags splashed with water ... I photographed the various experiences, and tried to compose an assembly of the images in Photoshop in order to illustrate the tale. It resulted in a series of 3 illustrations (pictures below).
