This project concentrates of Live projects personally selected by myself which were completed between the dates of January to April 2012. Within this time I completed various Projects, Briefs and Competitions along with beginning to piece together a personal website containing my work. My work is more focused towards illustration and I found that my previous portfolio did not contain a body of work which reflected my interest in this subject in a confident standard and needed to show confidence, personal style and original ideas which would make me stand out a little from others. Realising this helped me plan my work as I knew I wanted to further my image making skills which would fit nicely within a newly born portfolio. This is something I felt I didn’t have with my previous showcase of work, a personal bound to my work. Although I concentrate most of my time on this area of working there is a certain aspect of making publications, an area I regrettable didn’t get into much sooner within the previous years of being as it is an exciting process, bringing images together, taking them through the print process and binding a finished piece at the end of it and within these working weeks I had a play with this and produced a collaborative piece which is later mentioned about in this report. To cut a long boring story short I decided to look at the project as a way to discover what I like, learn new skills, play with ideas and tweak my personal style of working. Doing this will then hopefully help build for a better portfolio and give me the confidence needed when showing work to possible clients and give me work that reflects me but also connects with what has been asked. This is basically how I have decided to achieve in this Live project of the final term here at LCC.

SECRET SEVEN’S secret-7.com gallery.ideageneration.co.uk “What made this project more exciting is that my work was personally selected for the rest of the produced covers by CSS themselves, not just by receiving votes via talenthouse.com. This made it feel more of an achievement that as it had caught the eye of artist I took inspiration from...I must of done something right which is a good feeling.”

In April the Idea Generation gallery in Shoreditch, London will exhibit around 700 unique seveninch sleeves inspired by tracks from The Cure, Florence + The Machine, Bombay Bicycle Club, CSS, DJ Shadow, Noah & The Whale and Ben Howard. The exhibition has an added air of mystery as no-one will know who designed each sleeve, or which of our seven tracks is housed inside.

S E C RET 7” I S A N E X C I T I N G PR O JE CT C OMBIN IN G MU S I C A ND A RT F O R DESIG N ER S , A LL I N A I D O F TE E N A GE C A N C E R T R U S T. There is something about vinyl that transcends every format that has followed in its path. An integral reason for this is that it’s allure and functionality allows the listener to be absorbed by more than one of their senses. Secret 7” is a project which aims to rekindle some of the excitement for sleeve art in the digital era by exploring how a track would be interpreted by an array of brilliant artists.

On the 21st April, Record Store Day, each of these true one-off will go on sale – and only after purchase will the buyer find out whose creations they have bought. Every penny profited from the sale of these exclusive vinyl records is going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

CSS music video for ‘City Grrrl’ Screenshots from this.

The brief given by Secret Seven’s was a simple one, to produce a piece of artwork inspired by one of the artist’s involved in this event. It was to be done in a way which did not give away the musician’s name, song title and not involve any sort of graphic logo, lyrical content or even imagery taken from their existence. The idea of this was to keep the vinyl inside the designed packaging hidden from the buyer and for the vinyl only to brought upon the created image on the vinyl sleeve only. With this in mind I began to look at the artist’s involved in the project and decided to select Cansei de Ser Sexy ‘CSS’, a Brazilian band that I have been a fan of since back in my high school days. The song that would be pressed for Secret Seven’s was going to be taken from their new L.P titled La Liberacion, the song titled; ‘City Grrrl’. This was exciting as this song held great material to draw from and It involved a theme of doing what you wish, not caring and living the life you want so I worked with this in mind when drawing.

Here is my illustrative outcome for vinyl to be released by universal Records and included in the exhibition at the Idea Generation Gallery this April in Shoreditch. I wanted my personal style to be clear with this piece of drawing as many

People will be seeing this piece at the exhibition and also an auction of all the work will be taken place, so it needed to be something funny and worth personally owning for a buyer. A successful first project, fun to follow at exhibition...

THE MYSTERONS soundcloud.com/the-mysteron facebook.com/TheMysteronsMusic

I came up with the idea (Right page) after listening to their songs which lead me to think about hand drawn signs in Brooklyn NYC from back in the day. Using this to inspiring the Cover I decided to take a different direction with the track titles on the rear of the cover focusing my type around the idea it had just been written with felttip by a little misfit in somewhere in the suburbs. I think it reflects the band well and will give a good first impression on them when this E.P has been pressed and released later this year.

Brighton-based band The Mysterons took their name from race of Martians in a British 60′as sci-fi show. Theo Celano from the band asked if I wanted to do a sleeve for a E.P release that is in the pipelines for them. I naturally responded with yes after hearing them for the first time a few weeks prior this invertation and thought they were f**king rad...I had to be involved somehow? They sing about being wasted, robbing liquor stores and underage girls just two examples. Holy Twist Records will be releasing their first 7″ into the world later this year and it will be featuring the graphics produced by myself.

A project that sprung from the previous encounter I had with The Mysterons lead to coming up with a poster to promote their first gig in Shoredich at a bar named Catch. Commissioned by the chaps at The Gift London provided me with a ridiculous next to nothing amount to work with, I decided to take the print job into my own hands and spend the rest on beers as also I didn’t like their logo I had to include. The image is borrowed from an unknown person in this world and found when aimlessly looking for images for my tumblr page which contains next to nothing that is useful, but only inspiring, colour, strange and interesting. What I liked about this image is that it gives off an unnerving feel, that something is happening that the child in the photograph does not seem to be enjoying or could be enjoying, shouting encouraging things to spur something onwards. I saw this an acted on it using it for the main image to be used to build this poster design up from. Using the original image that I found I then took it into Photoshop and played with the colour channels for an alternative printed outcome, knowing that I was going to use Riso to produce this piece of work I then split these colour paths up into three colours, these being fluorescent pink, yellow and black allowing the FP & Y to mix creating a forth colour of orange. The overall poster was printed on recycled sugar paper, with a rough grain finish helped give for a less perfect finish...rough around the edges feel something the band convey in their music reflecting their sound in the poster.

These T-shirts are going to be the first to be available to promote The Mysterons band, T-shirt one is a three colour print using Yellow, Red and Black. I also used half-tones to create a brown looking crust on the pizza. The idea behind using the pizza is that they love good fast food and pizza was their top favourite one. At a later stage I am going to do a Hotdog and cheeseburger for some sticker designs and more T-shirts once we have printed these two to see how they turn out, watch this space... Back in January when the live project began myself and Augustas Winter, fellow student came together to bang our heads together to come up with an idea for a publication. We decided that we could make a collection of books in which would contain photographs taken by ourselves from adventures we had been on. These two publication are the start of something we both would like to carry on with, allowing other people to contribute along the line broadening the places featured within the publication. Eventually there would be a collaborative collection of publications which would work together

Collaborative

11

And provide an alternative insight in to different places around the world. We also thought that an event could take place each time there was a new edition to the collection. It would be an exhibition were the content would be displayed as single images and the publications would be also able to be viewed as a finished piece. It would be a chance to purchase the work and gain interest in our idea for a simple clear idea for what I suppose would be seen as a alternative travel guide.

The first publication images were taken in New York City on a trip that Augustus Winter took back in 2011. They document the places he visited and food he enjoyed, as you look through this book it gives an insight in to walking around the city in the day and night and seeing things from the viewers eye. It gives the book a certain motion within the content something which is nice about it I feel.

The second publication which would of been released along side with the previous NYC book. This one contains photographs taken in Marrakesh, South Africa of a journey I went on also at the beginning of 2011. The place is a very strange land where rules don’t seem to apply. It seems so far away from what we are used to but is actually only just under two hours away from London, it is crazy to think people live so differently but so closely to us. The images reflect what I saw and hopefully shows the complete opposite of our ways of life which the people of Marrakesh live and how they do this, different transport methods, items for sale and fantastic landscapes from the country.

COLLABORATIVE 2/2

We printed our books using a Lazer-Jet A3 printer in LCC and decided to print the cover and inside cover of the publication using the Risograph printer because we wanted to achieve a fluorescent pink in colour title which I hand drawn and included on the cover and inside pages. The inside cover was printed as a full-bleed black in colour photograph which is bolder and less reviling then the other images in the actual pages, it gives the overall publication a special touch as it has a very hands on personal approaching which is clearly seen when in your hands.

SAMSUNG GALAXY LOVE NOTE www.galaxylovenote.com

I did a drawing for the lovely people at samsung for them to include as part of their Galaxy Love Note promotion which is currently running. My “Love” drawing accepted to be apart of a limited collection of postcards produced by a big bunch of people who used paint, ink and cameras to create images of ‘Loovveee’. These images are then able to be used along with a nice note written by yourself to spread your very own personal ‘Love’ note to anyone around the world for free.

Don’t Panic run a monthly competition to create the inside poster which is then included in the Don’t Panic package on each release. This time the theme was ‘Believe’ and needed to be sized to A2 but the image could be of anything from a to a drawing. I decided to work with watercolour and work with a digital drawing I did and turned into a more visually exciting piece of work. Here is my entry I submitted to Don’t Panic for the brief, but I did catch it a bit late and didn’t gain many votes, that being 58’Likes’ As I didn’t do to well in voting it wont make judging which is fine and has given me a piece of imagery that I can print nicely for my portfolio so it was not a waste of time in the end.

YCN HEINZ SALAD CREAM BRIEF

Y C N / Co mpe t i t i o n B rie f 2 0 1 2

www.ycnonline.com

To develop a creative campaign that attracts young people to Heinz Salad Cream, encouraging them to eat it on or with ANY of their favourite foods. Reinforce the message that Heinz Salad Cream is a tasty and versatile sauce for today.

“ I approached this project with an open mind to create something fun and would cause people to open dissucsion about Heniz Salad Cream. I wanted to draw some examples of good food to use salad cream with but not in the normal way so decided to bring the salad cream to life and make it a little stupid, positioning the bottle of salad cream directly on top of the food i was suggesting goes togeher such as Chips, Sausage and Pizza.

C re at ive R e quire me n t s Get young people to either discover or rediscover the brand. Generate excitement around this unique quirky brand and engage consumers through upbeat/fun messaging. Get young people talking about Heinz Salad Cream again and be proud to say that they eat it! The idea can take any format you feel appropriate. It would be ideal to have the potential to work across all manner of channels (new and traditional media, packaging, new products ideas, even the name is up for grabs!). Feel free to incorporate the Heinz Salad Cream Keystone logo, ‘It Has To Be Heinz’ logo and images of our packs into your work where appropriate. All assets can be found in the project pack.

These images would then build my poster campaign up and provide exciting illustration which would encourage people to try salad cream, talk about the product and share a laugh or two about the adverts, I believe this would make people buy the stuff for sure. My entry has been submitted to YCN time will only tell. “

Tar g et A udi e n c e 18-29 year old adults, who are looking to add taste/tang to their favourite foods and sandwiches. They are an up-beat and sociable bunch, who love their food.

PLAYSTATION ACCESS / COVER COMPETITION dontpaniconline.com/design brief/accesscoverstar uk.playstation.com

My entry for the Playstation Access Magazine cover for next months issue titled ‘Gaming Takes Over The World’. Entries were asked to design a cover inspired by the title of the issue. This is an area of Design I am not to strong at but had to enter as the prize is a F**king PSP Vita Console!! Never mind the cameras that are also included in the prize it’s all about the Vita. The idea came from some photographs I took at the Barbican Conservatory, a not so hidden garden in London now due to latest issue of It’s Nice That magazine. I think the image works well as it gives the impression of two worlds, one being the fictional gaming world, in this case this being the barbican and the use of Nathan Drake from the game Uncharted. Within the background of the photograph is the outside world, London and this comparison between the two world clash and makes you wonder about the idea of gaming actually physically taken over the world. The overall image has good depth drawing you inside the image and this is what hopefully will make people want to look further into the magazine and open it to discover its contents. Anyway winner to be announced...

P/R Looking at the work of others and realising the queilty of their outcomes has been great and being able to study pieces and transcribing these certain things and playing with them from working with materials, differnet methods and tools I have been able to use it all in own pieces. I have learn’t a great deal working in this way which has been great for myself and furthering my knowledge and skills in an area of image making that I enjoy, this being illustration. Although a lot of what i have done throughout the live projects was illustration I have had the time to go out and take photographs and play with layouts with the images taken. In project five I got together with Augustas Winter and produced a nice picture book documenting our personal journeys. It’s one of my favorite things that I have worked on and is something that will be revisited and worked on further as we both have further ideas about this idea. Also having access to building a personal web page has helped give me a platform to showcase my work. It is a comforting feeling to have a body of work online available for people to see and understand how you work. The website is also another ongoing project and has a great deal of work to be put into it, along with new content and personalised web demain to upgrading my cargo account to allow further things to be uploaded to it. Overall I feel more confident as an image maker and a slight Graphic Designer, producing work that will help build my portfolio up to a standard which would be reconized by others and hopefully help me progress after this course ends. Adding my final major project to the contents of my folio should also reflect my ability to create drawings and which will also show various print techiques I can personally use or enjoy working with. I believe these ten weeks have helped me a lot eventhough i have tought most of things myself it’s given me alot.

REVIEW From this ten weeks of producing work for Competitions and certain Briefs I have learn’t a great deal as there has been less pressure to follow only one idea through to the end, I’ve been able to work on many different ideas and explore different ideas and outcomes. I have also been able to practice my drawing skills learning lots of new ways to treat images, mixing my hand drawn illustrations where I have started to play with textures and layers on photoshop where I have began to find advantages of using filters and bitmaps in a suttle way within my orignial ideas to enhance the outcomes. This is something that will help me later on when working on my final major project and will not have to waste time discovering them then. Being able to have the oppintunity to look at things with a different eye has also allowed me to find different ways to produce work from layout to finding my passion of photography coming back to play with, as this has seemed to disappear over the past few year and not worked with to the extent I personally would of liked to of used it. The ideas i have come up with over this project that i have yet to complete i will be taking further and producing work over the summer with a few friends and hopefully continuing my passion in imaging making and producing new work which reflect the things I have found in these weeks. Looking at the work of others and realising the queilty of their outcomes has been great and being able to study pieces and transcribing these certain things and playing with them from working with materials, differnet methods and tools I have been able to use it all in own pieces.

Highland’s Titles are currently running a competition with Don’t Panic which gives you the oppinunity to win a piece of land in scotland. By winning this piece of land allows you to officially be known as a ‘Lord’. This seemed like an exciting possibility so I have entered to see if I can become ‘Lord Hamer’ sounds amazing right? The brief is to come up with a fresh way to create a coat of arms which represents you as a person. This will be then the coat of arms which will be a signed to your piece of Scottish highlands as well as being made into a real coat of arms for display in your home. My idea came from things I like such as photography, wildlife, forests, exploring and drawing. All of these things can be seen in my coat of arms on the right. I believe it represents me very well, as a not to serious person and reflects all of the things I love and enjoy well. It is a new approach to how coats of arms are traditionally designed, usually starting with a shield shape. I decided to build my shield up with the floor of the forest, trees and a sunny back drop as this shows instantly my love for open green spaces and forests, something that shows also where I am from and grew up around. The birds show my fascination with wildlife, while the pencils at the bottom of my design show my passion of drawing. I have also included a not so accurate portrait of myself holding a camera and wearing an explorer hat, these reflect my love for photography and of course going on adventures and seeking new places and experiences...Oh and I enjoy wearing flannel shirts so I put one of these in to illustrate that as well. At the top and bottom of the COA’s I have also written a slogan? “The wonderful would of make believe, enjoying life since 1989” This shows my attitude towards life, trying to stay away from anything which is serious and keeping my head away from negative vibes and enjoying life, staying in a place I like to call ‘Samland’. Voting starts on the 27th this month so make sure you vote my design and then hopefully the judges will then pick my COA’s for the winning design and I will become a LORD... Cool? Sounds it!

Talent House are running a competition with Major Lazer to come up with a new tshirt design which will be made into the real thing and taken on tour this summer with them which will be then used to promote there new song “Get Free. To the right is my entry. As the song is very summery i have decided to go with an ice cream theme, dripping off the major lazer logo which i have bitmapped and coloured yellow and green. The brief asked to base your design around the promo video for there 2012 summer world tour and the song featured in it being get free so what better way to reflect the overall of feeling of summer...strawberry ice cream, cherries and major lazer!

My final project is really self directed and was born from a tumblr I have been constantly updating for around a year now. It has become more and more popular as the contents has grown and people are enjoying its random photo feed feel it offers. You can never be sure what you find you will find next on the site and this is what makes people continue to scroll the endless page, dicovering new and inspiring things such as a simple colour, place or nude being...it’s all really fun. This idea lead me to think of a way to branch out and play with this in a more structured and professional manor that connect more with the people who provide the contents, allow them to be known by the public and show their work in a nice way...

Collect & Preserve / Overview Now that I have come up with a confident identity which can be used throughout the social networking sites I will be able to use these to spread the work of C&P and gain the interest needed to become successful. So you want to know what all this is about I suppose well here you go... The whole idea of collect and preserve is to gather current issues within life in general. We all live such different lives and this is interesting and the main reason for this project. People get up to strange and wonderful things wherever they may be from shooting guns in the dessert to taking rain showers in the forest, these two examples are a little wild but are the type of things that would be encouraged to submit to C&P in an attempt to gather a huge amount of photographic documentation of life around the globe. This material will then be archived and preserved and released in a limited publication each month either in a newspaper or cheap publication for people to treasure. In time the project will hopefully gain enough interest and material which will then be used to create a really nice book and published into the world, but in the mean time the idea is to get photos sent to me, print them in limited numbers and make a special exhibition

Collect & Preserve

49

Which celebrates photography and the beauty of life. In a nutshell C&P will encourage people to send these photographers to me which will then be selected to feature in a small run publication and also be shown in a exhibition where people can come and view the work with a beer and friends and this is what photography is all about sharing life experiences with others through image. So this is my idea and something I will be continuing to build upon, make stronger and bring peoples views together and show these findings in a exciting way, keep your eye you never know what will happen, hopefully sometime good will come of this idea.
