New Yangtze Medical District As a part of a cooperative world studio, this project was completed in large part through online communication at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The populous and growing city of Wuhan has plans to expand the city with new urban developments. Exercises throughout this studio helped define the project area. Series of urban and hydrological analyses were performed in order to finalize a sponge city concept for a new development on the outskirts of the city.

Master planning of a new medical district at the center of the new city was performed in a group of two other students. The previously established design guidelines were followed in order to independently produce the following landscape proposal.

Library of Genoa Harbour As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study abroad studio project was produced entirely through online communication with Italian professors. Much of the understanding of the city of Genoa and the harbour site was produced through online exploration. This project was done in conjunction with an architecture student who developed a building concept to complement the landscape concept.

The site is located on a busy passage on the harbourfront. A library campus needs to facilitate a large flow of people while also offering a variety of spaces. Quiet and isolated spaces are offered for those using the library and are complemented by public gathering spaces which can be used for a variety of purposes. Lush, resilient plantings are introduced to make a portion of the harbour green which is otherwise lacking in plant material.

The Big Creek Corridor Big Creek Corridor is a project located at the site of an abandoned wastewater treatment plant. By repurposing existing structures and adding new ones with similar visual character, this project transforms the appearance of a post-industrial landscape into many welcoming and interconnected spaces. An emphasis on form is placed by highlighting these structures with vibrant colors. Additionally, complementing this color palette with planting selections adds to the palette with year-round interest.

Using the historical precedent of the town’s iconic spring, it was important to reintroduce water to this post-industrial setting. The union of industrial structures, vegetation, color, and water creates a place for Williamston that can be used communally. This site offers a way for people to connect with nature to heal, much like these spring towns did centuries ago for people across the United States.

The Town of Williamston is seeking rejuvenation of their parks and derelict water treatment plant as a greenway.

The Experimental Forest This project aims to heighten Clemson’s Experimental Forest by providing much needed connections and accessibility. There is a multitude of unique features throughout the Forest valuable for recreation, leisure, and education. The goal of this project is to highlight and connect these features while simultaneously designing in such a way that respects the Forest’s goal for ecological sensibility. Further, the Forest becomes accessible to more people with a thoughtfully designed greenway system that extends throughout the region, connecting parks, open spaces, and places of interest.

Clemson’s Experimental Forest has been involved in a long-standing endeavor in resource management and preservation that has been underrecognized by the surrounding communities. Classified as a multiple use forest, this unique place is in need of a design intervention to better meet its delineated status. Although the management needs of the forest are successfully met annually, there is a growing need for the surrounding communities to better connect with this unique natural asset. By better connecting to surrounding communities with pedestrian corridors, the Forest can better fulfill its role as a recreational amenity.

A thoughtfully designed greenway system that extends throughout the region, connecting parks, open spaces, and places of interest would serve cyclists who are especially lacking safe pathing within and outside the Forest.

Additionally, new spaces created within the Forest make attractive park areas that illuminate unique ecological or historical features. The growing need for connection with nature is met with educational programming that highlights the history of the forest, current forest management practices, and an articulation of its diverse biota.

These measures are intended to help people grow personal relationships with the forest that increase their enthusiasm and sense of ownership.

Southern Experimental Forest History

X - 1785: The land within the Southern Experimental Forest was managed by the Cherokee for hundreds of years prior to European settlement following the Hopewell Treaties of 1785.

1860 - 1930: Land heavily eroded after years of intensive cotton farming.

Farmers did not practice land rotation, contour plowing, or fertilization. Only 1/3 of farmers owned the land they worked on.

1933: Under initiatives of the New Deal, Dr. George H. Aull develops plans for the purchase of approximately 75 farms, relocation of the farm owners, and extensive land use projects including: pollution control, reforestation, and historic building restoration.

1934: Federal Government approves proposal that included provisions for wildlife sanctuaries, botanical gardens, purchase of 35,000 acres of land, given to Clemson after “completion” of the project.

1947: Mr. N.B. Goebel was appointed Forest Manager following a period of neglect, vandalism, and unusual utilization as test bombings. Now, the Experimental Forest became a place of considerate land management.

1954: 27,400 acres deeded over to Clemson College.

1956: US Army Corp of Engineers’ Hartwell Damn Project inundates 7,667 acres of land within the forest property.

Management guidance and direction under these three forest managers in the past 30 years have resulted in a valuable resource from once unproductive land. General management of the Forest includes removal of illegally dumped trash, boundary line postings, timber sales, research and stand examinations, facility improvements, recreation planning, etc., which all function in the continuance of successful operation of the resource.

Top: Master plan for the Southern Experimental Forest and surrounding areas. A study of existing proposals in the Green Crescent greenway was implemented into this plan. An analysis of existing park spaces in the Clemson area was performed to understand their spatial relationships and how they might be connected. New park spaces are proposed within the forest to provide a regular pacing of recreational places along the greenway.

Conestee Landfill Park Following my interest in brownfield sites and site remediation, I chose to address the site of a 40-acre closed landfill in Greenville, South Carolina for my final studio project. This site has many opportunites to be transformed into a vibrant parkspace as well as an energy production facility.

The relationships between the different site elements were identified and harmonized into a landscape plan. Water, waste, energy, topography, plants, wildlife all share fascinating connections that are highlighted in this project.
