EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL

Dear friends of Alliance, After kicking off the year with renewed energy and a fresh batch of events, we have hit our stride. March and April offer you a hearty selection of experiences with Alliance. The collaborations continue. We have been eager to team up with like-minded institutions and individuals who understand that across the world, cultural expression is a social outlet that makes for a healthier (and if we may say, saner) society. That is why Alliance is pooling strengths with other organizations to get things done better and create projects and spaces that cover more ground and are more diverse, entertaining, and empowering. The fact that women in Tanzania are a force to be uplifted, this is something we at Alliance recognize all year. Even so, we are taking advantage of the visibility of Women's Day to make some extra noise about it. Our focus is reserved for gifted female artists in Tanzania and the works they are creating. Alliance Franรงaise and Nafasi Art Space are holding a joint event on the 8th and 9th of March, where visual artists, performing artists and writers will show audiences what they are capable of. Languages Day is the result of another combined 4

As for what is “quintessential Alliance”: Barazani lives on. Also, March brings the opportunity for us each year to celebrate our attachment to the rich and diverse Francophone culture. We will be hosting a series of celebrations: a concert featuring Uptight (France), a painting exhibition by Goscinny (Belgium), a documentary about Mahaleo (Madagascar) and a Francophone version of the ever-entertaining music quiz.

effort, this time with British Council and GœtheInstitut. This event will allow you to get a taste of what it is like to learn English, French and German through free classes where participants will sample all three languages in one hour.

While reading the full programme in the pages that follow, you might want to mark your own calendar. To the culture enthusiasts and long time friends of Alliance – keep up the support and let us know what else you would like to enjoy. To the curious or uncertain – keep an open mind, surprise yourself, and try something new. Diana Nyakyi Member of the Board Writer 5

CINEMA

38 Témoins

Belgium / France (2012)

6.30pm ENTRANCE FREE

Friday 1st March 2013 Louise returns home to discover that while she was away on business in China her street was the scene of a crime. There were no witnesses. Everybody was asleep. Apparently. Pierre, Louise’s husband, was at work. Apparently. As days go by, Louise learns that thirty-eight people saw or heard something. That Pierre was home that night. He heard. He saw. One of thirty-eight, keeping silent, lying... one of thirty-eight, her husband. The 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese and the outcry when 38 witnesses failed to call the cops continue to resonate long after the crime was forgotten. Lucas Belvaux now presents a stylish and thought-provoking crime drama that tackles the issues of moral dilemmas and social responsibility. 38 témoins is a powerful movie that sheds light on the dark side of humanity. Directed by: Lucas Belvaux 101 min.

Albinos in Tanzania By Ana Palacios

Alliance Exhibition Hall Opening at Noon ENTRANCE FREE

Monday 4th March 2013 The Spanish journalist and cinema producer Ana Palacios likes to show through her camera forgotten problems in often forgotten corners of the World. Albinism can be considered a caprice of nature, but for many people it can be a curse. Zawia, Alfred and Yonge are albino children who live chained up to a tradition that condemns them to discrimination. Still in their childhood, they know that they will have a future even more difficult than that of their brothers. But they learn, enjoy and use up every moment in life, struggling until the end to get their right to equality. They do not want to be different, because they are not different.

He goes to the scene, as he has no choice. Thus begins the odyssey of a State official through an increasingly complex and hostile world. Speed, power struggles, chaos, economic crisis... in a frantic chain of events, one emergency replaces another. What sacrifices are men ready to accept? a film by Paes & Rajaonarivelo

Alliance Exhibition Hall Starts 6.30pm ENTRANCE FREE

Friday 5th April 2013 In Malagasy, “Mahaleo” means free, independent… Mahaleo’s voices and music have accompanied the people of Madagascar ever since the collapse of the colonial regime. Yet, even after 30 years of success, the group’s seven musicians still keep their distance from the world of showbusiness, and remain deeply committed to helping their country’s development; their professions range from surgeon to farmer, physician to sociologist and member of parliament. Accompanied by the group’s rhythmic melodies, the film follows the singers through their daily lives, giving us a glimpse of the farreaching social and economic problems of the Malagasy people. The combined talents of the Brazilian, Cesar Paes, and the Malagasy, Raymond Rajaonarivelo, have produced a work that is both etheral and concrete, poetic and political.

EXHIBITION

Harmonising with Nature by Hamedi Athumani and Tobias Minzi

Tuesday 9th April 2013 A mixed media exhibition by Hamedi Athumani and Tobias Minzi Hamedi’s wood sculptures are noted for their striking originality and organic nature. The sculptor follows the natural flow of form and grain to produce mesmerising works that seem to take on a life of their own. The result is a reflection of cosmic balance. His sculpture defies all directional rules for display and use. Minzi is a master of modern realism. Born and raised near the shores of Lake Nyanza, Minzi’s early development and growth in art was experienced in the village. Courageous and daring, the young artist would come to Dar where he met urbane and more experienced artists who would challenge and enrich his creativity. Minzi developed an art of his own with many challenges in style and technique. This includes collage techniques that fit comfortably into his realistic canvasses with a comfortable handling of colour.
