Why do flying machines and astronauts appear in the artworks and sacred texts of all ancient cultures? What is the meaning of the immense earth drawings, impossible to view from the ground, that can be found all over the globe? How could prehistoric cultures have engraved diorite and other hard rock with such incredible precision without the use of modern tools? In this mind-bending new book, Erich von Däniken draws on his latest research to update his astounding theory that the inhabitants of other planets have kept in contact with humankind since the earliest times. Readers are invited to assess for themselves the stunning visual evidence presented in some 200 photographs and examine previously unpublished testimony from expert informants. Erich von Däniken is known all over the globe for his anarchic theories of alien influence on Earth. His books have been translated into 32 languages, selling 65 million copies worldwide. He continues to be an avid researcher, travelling 100,000 miles every year to the planet’s most remote places in his quest to uncover the truth of our ancient origins. 5

After many years spent searching for the secret to peace, happiness and unconditional freedom, a chance encounter on the ghats of the sacred River Ganges heralds the end of Ray Brooks’s spiritual journey. This book reads like a novel but interspersed between humorous and uplifting stories of life in Rishikesh, India are nine thought-provoking conversations between Ray and an unassuming yet extraordinary Anglo-Indian man. Ray’s long-held spiritual beliefs are exposed and challenged, allowing him to see that his quest for wholeness has been a futile path: just like a shadow that seeks the sun. This book clearly points to something that is ever-present yet completely overlooked: the ordinariness and beauty of our natural state of being. Ray Brooks is a British author and public speaker on the subject of non-duality. He gives private and group talks throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, India and Canada.

THE ORIGINAL I CHING ORACLE OR THE BOOK OF CHANGES
The Eranos I Ching Project Rudolf Ritsema with Shantena Augusto Sabbadini The I Ching is one of the oldest Chinese texts and the world’s oldest oracle, accumulated from over 2,500 years of diviners, sages and shamans and born out of the oral tradition. There are 64 hexagrams, created from a collection of six lines, either broken or solid. In order to “read” from the book, you must cast a hexagram. The traditional method required yarrow sticks but nowadays is based on tossing three coins six times. The Original I Ching Oracle or The Book of Changes was inspired by Carl Gustav Jung’s insights into the psyche and researched for more than 60 years through the Eranos Foundation of Switzerland. It presents the oracular core of the I Ching as a psychological tool: the symbols interact with our minds in the same way dream images do. Rudolf Ritsema (1918–2006) was a renowned I Ching scholar and director of the international Eranos Centre for East West Studies. Shantena Augusto Sabbadini, a former theoretical physicist, joined Rudolf Ritsema to help run the Round Table Sessions and together they produced this translation of the I Ching. 9

Place the sheet of paper in front of you in landscape format (i.e. horizontally). Next, draw an image in the very centre of the paper that represents the subject you are considering, which in this example is the plays of Shakespeare. If you don’t want to draw the bard’s head, try sketching a quill pen or some other simple symbol instead. Whatever your central image, it will activate your imagination and trigger associations in your thoughts. You can also place a keyword below the image, perhaps using an interesting type style or even making it appear multi-dimensional. Use at least three colours for your central word and image.
Step 2 Now pick a colour and draw a thick branch coming off from the central image, like the bough of a tree. Sketch two lines that radiate out from the centre and then connect them at the tip. Let the branch curve organically as this will be visually engaging and therefore more interesting to the brain, making you more likely to memorize the information on the branch. Shade in the branch. Its thickness symbolizes the weight of this association in the hierarchy of your Mind Map.
Step 3 Label the branch with a single word in capital letters. As this Mind Map is about Shakespeare’s plays, you might label this first branch ‘COMEDY’, or ‘TRAGEDY’ or ‘HISTORY’. Alternatively, instead of writing a word, you might decide to draw a comedic mask, or a dagger or a crown. 2
MIND MAP MASTERY
H O W T O C R E AT E A M I N D M A P
Step 4 Send out secondary-level shoots from the main branch. Then draw thirdlevel branches that spread out from these secondary-level shoots. Write keywords on all the branches or – even better – draw symbols. There’s no need to rush: leave some of the branches empty at first, as your brain will naturally want to fill them in.
Pick another colour and create your next main branch, working around the central image. (Many beginners find it easiest to work clockwise around the centre, but do whatever suits you best.) As before, draw secondary- and third-level branches from this new branch and label them. Keep adding main branches until you have about five or six of them to work with.
Step 6 Now you have your main branches, move freely around your Mind Map, leaping from branch to branch, filling in any gaps and adding new sub-branches as ideas and associations occur to you.

The Authentic Ninja Training Manual Antony Cummins By the same author:
9781780284934 THE BOOK OF NINJA
This is the first book ever to present the authentic ninja techniques in a highly accessible, illustrated ‘how to’ format. The shadowy figure of the ninja – expert commando, secret agent, maverick who operates outside social norms – continues to exert fascination in the West, yet much of what is presented as ninja fact today is distorted or wrong. Drawing on the scrolls created by historical Japanese ninjas, this book offers the real ninja teachings in 150 easy-to-follow, illustrated lessons that draw contemporary students of ninja straight into the world of these skilled spy-commandos. The lessons cover all the basics of ninja warcraft and are made even more vivid by stepby-step photographs of the fighting techniques, diagrams outlining military tactics and beautiful samples of Japanese calligraphy. Antony Cummins is the founder of the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team, which has previously published The Book of Ninja and The Book of Samurai (Watkins). He also works as a consultant and co-presenter on high-end documentaries on Japan distributed by National Geographic. He has been recognized by peers as a leading expert in the discovery of military arts of medieval Japan. www.natori.co.uk
Lesson 1 tHe PatH of tHe sHinoBi “In our country we use the ideogram shinobi忍 as it has a deep meaning. Without realizing the meaning you will find it difficult to take even the first step on this path.” Bansenshkai, Fujibayashi-sensei, 1676
Those who wish to take the path of the shinobi must first understand the concepts represented by the shinobi ideogram. It carries the following essential meanings: “perseverance”, “forbearance”, “endurance”, “secrecy” and “stealth”. Through its use by agents engaged in espionage the ideogram has also come to have the connotations of “spy”, “secret agent”, “thief ” and “infiltrator”. In the Bansenshúkai Fujibayashi-sensei explains that the shinobi ideogram comprises the characters for “heart” (心) and “blade” (刃), because to plunge themselves deep into the core of the enemy shinobi must forge their hearts into weapons that are hard and sharp like a blade.
This is not a path for the weak. To venture into the dominion of the shinobi requires enormous self-control and a level of commitment and endurance that most people cannot attain. What makes the path so difficult is that shinobi must be simultaneously loyal to their own clan and treacherous toward the enemy. They live within samurai society but remain in its shadow, forever close to the centre but always cast to the outside, as any betrayal could mean the downfall of a clan. Consequently, shinobi sit outside the lord’s “light” but close enough to feel its “warmth”. Unlike the average soldier, they do not benefit from the army’s protection – they do not march within the ranks or camp behind sturdy palisades. The shinobi venture out before all others, alone, and put themselves in danger deep inside the adversary’s stronghold.

Lesson 8 Drawing from Different religions The samurai class existed for approximately one millennium, from the 9th century to the 19th century, and during this time a variety of belief systems became prominent in Japan. Each of these influenced samurai and shinobi philosophy, although individual warriors would have been subject to their own beliefs and the political climate of the time. Here we give a brief overview of the most significant religions. To gain a fuller understanding of the shinobi mindset you should venture deeper into these teachings.

Life contains suffering. Desire or “thirst” for certain impermanent states or things produces suffering, which in turn leads to a build-up of karma, which ties us to the endless cycle of death and rebirth. If we can identify and overcome our desire, we will reduce suffering and karma. Inner peace is found by cultivating a correct mind. 12

central aspect of ritual in many traditions is the importance of purity, and ideally all forms of worship and meditation should be practised when
the individual is as free from pollution as possible. This means cleansing and grooming the body so that you are ready to begin your practice fresh and untainted by the material world. In Kundalini we normally try to do our sadhana (daily spiritual practice) in the early hours, sometimes before the sun rises. This quiet time is good for meditating and cleansing the mind. I definitely notice a difference in the quality of my day when I meditate before dawn. If you have never experienced getting up at this time, try it at least once! Traditionally, Tantric practitioners (called tantrikas) would practise nyasa and mudras before beginning their Kundalini yoga practice. Nyasa, or the sensitizing of the body by the gentle touch of the fingertips, is believed to awaken the body and make it ready for meditation practice. Mudras, or hand

Before your Kundalini practice in the morning, I recommend taking a cold shower for 1–3 minutes, as this hydrotherapy opens the capillaries and cleanses the body’s toxins. If you find this challenging, try massaging your body with pure oil first, to give your skin a protective coating. If you allow yourself time to adjust to the cold water, your body temperature will regulate and you will feel awakened and invigorated, ready to embrace the day. SPRING DAY OUT There’s nothing better on a fine spring day than running and playing outside, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying all the new life and energy that abounds at this season. Here is a plan for a whole day of springtime Forest School activities, all inspired by the spirit of renewal that permeates this exciting time of year. A chocolate-egg hunt is a great way to start the day, filling everyone with feelings of achievement and allowing all that excitable energy to be released. It’s a very appropriate activity for springtime: for Christians, the Easter egg represents the Resurrection, but in fact the use of eggs as a symbol of new life is much older than that. The ancient Egyptians, for example, believed that the sun god Ra hatched from an egg, and the idea of a cosmic egg that gave birth to the universe is found in many cultures. The second activity – designing a clay hare tablet – draws inspiration from one of the animals traditionally associated with the spring season. Have you heard the expression ‘mad as a March hare’? This saying refers to the way hares leap in the air and seem to box with each other in springtime, especially during the month of
March. This behaviour is part of an elaborate mating ritual, which is appropriate as hares have been used as symbols of fertility since ancient times. The Celtic fertility goddess Eostre (from whose name the word “Easter” derives) is associated with both the egg and the hare. This activity, in which gathered natural materials are used to shape unique pieces of art, develops children’s observation and fine motor skills, stimulates their creativity and gives new and exciting perspectives on nature. Ideas, experiences and memories combine to create a piece of art that can be taken home, opening

positive identification of edible wild foods is vital as many plants are poisonous. take a field guide or use your phone to access a website with pictures of edible plants, and choose wild foods that can be easily identified. always pick wild food away from pollution sources such as roads, dog-walking spots and sprayed farm margins.

DanDelion anD lime Tea
Before letting the children go off to forage, show them a dandelion with its distinctive bright yellow petals and toothed leaves. Each forager can then take a cup and head out to where the dandelions are growing. Once they’ve shown they can positively identify them, show them how to pick only the flowerhead by pinching it between thumb and forefinger, and then popping it in the cup. Don’t worry if some stalks are gathered – all parts of this plant are edible – but the Kit

Check that tip! everyone has only dandelions in their if you can’t find cups and pour cold water into each cup dandelion flowerheads, to gently wash the flowers – and help any a quarter cup of their bugs that may be present to escape! Most leaves can be used instead. children will be keen to inspect any bugs that emerge, but some may be nervous about this and need reassurance. After a good swill, place your hands over the top of the cup to act as a strainer and tip away the water, or use the tea strainer if you have one. Halve the limes (older children can do this under supervision) and hand out one half to each maker (for some a quarter may be enough).
Everyone can now place the washed dandelions into a fresh cup, squeeze in the lime juice and then drizzle in about a teaspoon of honey (or use sugar, if you prefer). To pour in the hot water from the thermos, place the cups on the floor. Let older children do this if they want and assist younger ones. Leave to steep for 5–10 mins, after which the water should have a slight yellow tinge. Add cold water now if it’s still too hot to sip. Then sit back and enjoy a revitalizing springtime drink! 49

I consciously choose to pay attention.
The year’s beginning is the perfect time to focus on a concept we can carry with us the whole year through: mindfulness. It’s a word we hear a lot these days, but what does it really mean to be mindful? Mindfulness is about being aware of the present moment and paying attention to what we’re feeling, thinking, and experiencing with acceptance. During peaceful moments, mindfulness isn’t so difficult, but it can be tricky during more challenging times. Like a lotus flower, we all experience the difficulties of opening our petals to the world around us. This month we’re going to focus on what it truly means to be mindful of what’s happening within and around us. Mindful living can positively impact your relationships, your career, and your emotional well-being. As the year is just beginning, it’s a brilliant time to explore how we can use mindfulness to make the most of every moment all year long.

MOWGLI STREET FOOD
Stories and recipes from Mowgli Street Food restaurants Nisha Katona By the same author:
9781848993525 PIMP MY RICE
In 2014, barrister Nisha Katona had a nagging obsession to build a restaurant serving the kind of food Indians eat at home and on the street. The first Mowgli restaurant opened in Liverpool in late 2014, blowing away the critics and forming legions of fans. The simple dishes of a Mowgli menu are a million miles away from the curry stereotype. They convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan, and always packed with fresh flavour. Nisha gave up her career as a full-time barrister to build Mowgli Liverpool, opened Mowgli Manchester less than a year later and will open in Birmingham and Leeds soon. From the Mowgli Chip Butty to the iconic Yoghurt Chat Bombs, Mother Butter Chicken to Calcutta Tangled Greens, this is the definitive collection of Mowgli’s signature street food dishes to recreate at home. Nisha Katona is a curry evangelist, barrister, businesswoman and founder of Mowgli Street Food. She appears regularly on television as a guest chef, sharing her passion for simple, honest cookery on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and BBC Radio 4.
