O

ne day, I want to be able to walk past a building and be proud to say that it was my design. That is the reason I am about to start my Master of Architecture, why I trekked around the outskirts of Barcelona to hunt down a Ricardo Bofill building and why I put in countless hours to the projects I love. I grew up in Singapore and England before moving to Australia. I like to think my interest in designing came from owning a more than decent Lego collection as a child. Simple, honest buildings with well-executed detailing hold more sway than any extravagant designs, however I admit my tastes are constantly being shaped. I think that architecture is deeply entwined with our interactions with the environment. The way people speak about Glen Murcutt’s designs touching the earth lightly, resonate with me in regards to design, form and materiality.

SUPERSTUDIO Bounding imposition: imposing cultural identity on our environment 2015

The brief called for an exhibition space for a series of items that relating to Australian cultural identity. Exhibition of the pieces was to be a novel and interesting, a theme noted throughout the competition. We as a group noticed a common thread, cultural values in objects were not so much inherent but instilled by the viewer.

As certain steps were triggered, auditory representations we had constructed played out. This way, a non-conventional version of the chosen exhibition pieces was shown. This simultaneously representing the notion of cultural imposition in both a spatial and ideological sense.

uperstudio was a 24-hour design competition organised by SONAA. The intense nature of the competition provided a unique and challenging atmosphere beyond normal studio environments.

ur proposal was an underground, circulatory space with two parallel paths, divided by a series of full height screens. The walkway consisted of a reactive “see-saw� path, whereby one user;s path imposed on the space opposite, unbeknown to the other user.

tudio Fire’s brief focused on a specific site (cnr. of Batman St and Spencer St in West Melbourne), in which we were to design a hotel / office space to be used by a number of agents. This brief was closely related to real world practices, from architectural offices, gallery spaces, rooms for designated special interest groups as well as the usual amenities to be found in a large building. Set several decades in the future, expanding technologies needed to be considered alongside Melbourne’s future climate. Using real life weather data and extrapolating several decades into the future, a distinct sun shade was parametrically modeled and fabricated (see detail).

FORM

The patterning of the North and East side is an optimisation of sunlight in the building, using aged copper panels to give the building a distinct visual identity. Climate data extrapolated into the future was used, focusing on cooling and shading of the building

A rudimentary algorithim generated multiple iterations of form (see above) and room layouts (see left). Selections of these layouts were based around practical considerations, placement of services and creating a sense of congruence through the building. Thus the M.od hotel was born.

tudio Air encouraged the use of tools such as Grasshopper and associated plug-ins in order to explore the use of Parametricism in architecture.

U

A computational approach to architecture meant creating forms responsive to a number of factors. For this project, one design approach was a playground modeled on the Merri Creek with a spatial representation of traffic flow.

Meshing these circles together and creating a bounding exoskeleton created the first component (as shown below). Using a plug-in that “relaxed the mesh resulted in an inflatable interior component.

At each point indicated on the map shown in the background, a structure was placed, bounded by the contours of the site. Data was collected over a series of visits to each site about traffic flow.

sing this information as a series of attraction points, sections of the playground increased or decreased in size, larger circles corresponding to larger traffic volumes, etc.

The end composite result was a visual representation of traffic flows and an atypical form for a small play-ground. The structure was an initial exploration into physical representations of data, rather than a performative piece.

lifton Hill Primary School’s need for a shading device prompted the final Studio Air design, with an actual client consultation and multiple site visits. As the school already had a tensile sun shade, the aim was to produce a non-conventional, parametrically driven form

The purpose of this sunshade was to optimise sunlight penetration (addressing widespread Vitamin D deficiency in Australian children) whilst balancing exposure to UV rays above the ‘safe’ UV index. The sunshade was placed according to a site analysis of people flows with corresponding

he shade was “relaxed” using the Kangaroo plug in to form its shape (2). Using Ladybug, a weather simulation plug in, a solar path diagram was created (3). The intersection of the sun’s path at periods of low UV exposure (0:00 - 11:00 and 15:00 - 0:00) with the shade was modeled as a series of attractor points. The proximity to these attractor points determined the size of the openings of the shade, using Weaverbird (4). By exploding the individual segments of the shade, it would be easily constructed by low-skill labour force.


PRIMO PIZZA YEAR

y role in Primo Pizza was primarily surveying and drafting existing conditions as well as some of the earlier proposed conditions. Primo Pizza in Northcote used contrasting ideas of rough and smooth textures and shapes. The rough of the exterior stucco juxtaposes with the smooth and practical tiling of the interior. Curved seating booths, railings and a marble terrazzo on the floors work against the sharper grid of the “PIZZA� tiling outside.

ithin Olaver Architecture and Interiors my role involved: design choice consultation, liaising with suppliers about material choices, preparing presentations, and delivering them to clients. Other projects I was involved with at Olaver Architecture and Interiors included a Mt Martha beach house and a Carlton North renovation, however in this project, I was involved from the very early stages of the design.

A

more technical brief, Construction Design required a 1:200 scale model as a section of Dallas Brooke’s Primary School, designed by McBride Charles Ryan. The model itself had to be structurally sound and complete with all details to be found on the building itself. Extra information such as load paths, soil types, temporary supports and slump tests were shown to prove a thorough understanding of the construction process.

D

etails for the structure included reinforced concrete placement, gaskets to attach cladding to the building, sloping and flashing for waterproofing. The process itself of reading the building drawings not only facilitated an understanding of how the building was put together, but more importantly why. The sheer level of minute details in this painstaking process taught the importance of precision and accuracy in drafting, as well as being an exercise in model making skills.


STUDIO EARTH A secret hiding in plain sight SITE

Herring Island

H

iding something in plain sight, offering visual tidbits to entice the audience, was the driving concept behind this installation on Herring Island. Rusted metal columns mapped according to focal points around the island rose from a natural land mass.

his was executed manually, but could easily be more accurately produced using parametric tools. This early use of watercolours and sculptural spaces combined with an auditory component occur throughout other designs, such as the Superstudio entry and M.od Hotel.

PERSPECTIVE OUT HOW THE DESIGN WILL BE SEEN BY MOST PEOPLE, AS ONLY A HINT TO THE SPACES BEHIND. THE STRUCTURE UTILISES THIS ‘HIDE AND REVEAL’, THE VERTICAL ELEMENTS PIERCING THE HILL ARE ONLY AN INDICATOR OF THE SECRET

triving to reach the highest environmental standards was key in EBS. The primary assignment required us to focus on reaching such a standard through a number of tools and technologies, utilising both passive and active components.

Green Star was used as a metric allowed us to rate our optimisation of plans for gas, water, storm and waste water, and electricity. This was done in consideration of material choices and their embodied energy.

Polycrystalline panels supply house with electricity, utilising an inverter that is kept off the electricity meter to avoid being charged for self-generated electricity. The panels are 2kwH, set at a 57˚, expected to produce 2287 kWH of electricity a year. In addition flat plate collectors set at 30˚ on the north side supply a post-booster to provide hot water in tandem with instantaneous gas heater system.

Areas like the bathrooms and ensuites are obviously tiled. However the south entrance where the laundry is located is not the main entrance and has tiling such that there is a space where the client’s dog can easily be toweled off without trekking mud into the home

INTERNET DATA & TELEPHONE Data is provided by a wireless modem which is connected to high-speed optic fibre cables. The two modems provide ample wireless coverage in the house. Telepone connections are only provided in the study area the clients only seeing the need for one home phone due to extensive mobile phone usage.

The smoke detectors are located around the house but away from the stove where they may give a false alarm.

Due to Melbourne’s temperate climate, ceiling fans can suffice as the only active cooling system coupled with stack ventilation, eliminating the need for AC units. All fans have a 900mm radius, utilising rule of thumb to provide cooling to the entire house.

The rainwater is collected in the Elmich VersiTank and reused in garden taps and in the laundry.

Greywater is collected from sinks in the bathroom and ensuite. After undergoing treatment it is then redistributed into the sub surface garden irrigation system and the toilets of the house.

According to basic rules of thumb there are downpipes located at least every 9m along the gutters.

SEWER RISER

Located at the hghest point of the sewerage system, vent allows gas to be released above the house and disperse without causing any unpleasant odours.

Gutter meshs prevent debris from being collected into the rainwater system. A diverter means that any excess water flow is directed to greywater, then sewerage systems.
