Jellyfielders  Podcast  Episode  8   Turning  Life  Loves  Into  Warm  Hugs     Hi   listeners,   after   the   double   whammy   of   podcasts   you   have   been   getting   over   the   past   couple   of   weeks,   I   wanted   to   get   back   into   the   swing   of   usual   operations   by   focusing   on   the   things   we   all   love   in   life.   Yes,  that’s  right  people  I  am  talking  hobbies  –  what  you  spend  that  tiny   bit   of   free   time   you   might   have   doing,   and   what   you   long   to   do   when   you   actually   have   to   work   instead.   But   of   course   I’m   approaching   this   one  with  a  little  Sparrow  twist…     Aside   from   my   naughty   but   cute   cats   and   my   family,   I   have   three   big   loves  in  life  right  now,  that  I  would  rather  be  doing  more  than  anything   else   I   have   to   do   to   earn   money   or   to   be  a   generally  good   human   being.     In   no   particular   order   these   are   the   baking   and   eating   of   cake   or   cake   related   goodies,   knitting   and   partaking   in   a   little   fancy   dress.   Not   necessarily   epic   hobbies   there,   or   anything   groundbreaking,   but   what   can   I   say?   I’m   a   simple   girl   with   equally   simple   life   loves.   It   is   probably   enough  to  just  have  something  you  really  enjoy  doing  and  that  you  can   turn  to  in  times  of  comfort,  need  and  equally  boredom.    But  would  you   be  interested  if  I  told  you  you  could  make  your  hobbies  work  harder  and   smarter  for  you?    And  that  the  things  you  love  to  do  could  probably,  if   you  put  your  mind  to  it,  benefit  someone  else?  Thought  so!     We  talked  a  bit  in  the  last  podcast  about  many  people  thinking  that  they   didn’t   have   time   to   volunteer,   and   that   the   idea   of   “micro   volunteering”   @SamRSparrow

could  be  one  answer  to  getting  people  involved  in  our  time-‐poor  times.     Well  I  have  another  –  getting  your  volunteering  hours  sneaked  in  via  an   actual   hobby.     It   is   a   bit   like   hiding   vegetables   in   children’s   food   –   everyone’s   a   winner.     I’m   going   to   give   you   three   examples   relating   to   my  favourite  hobbies,  which  have  allowed  me  to  contribute  to  the  world   without  really  breaking  a  sweat.     As   I   mentioned,   cake   in   all   its   glorious   forms   is   one   of   my   favourite   things  in  life  really.  Baking  it,  eating  it,  looking  at  it   –  it  is  all  a  great  way   to  spend  time  if  you  ask  me.  Imagine  my  delight  when  I  realised  I  could   contribute  to  someone  else  or  a  cause  just  by  baking  cake  –  something   which  I  do  most  weekends  anyway?!  I  was  asked  very  nicely  by  my  lovely   colleague   Jess   who   ran   the   marathon   if   I   would   contribute   some   cakes   for  a  cake  sale  to  help  up  her  sponsorship  total  for  the  charity  we  work   for,  Catch22.  I  didn’t  hesitate  at  all,  and  in  fact  along  with  some  others   helped   to   mastermind   what   turned   into   a   two   day   bake-‐a-‐thon   of   mammoth   proportions   which   involved   at   least   seven   varieties   of   cake   both  days,  and  the  selling  of  cake  to  other  charities,  colleagues,  friends   and   suppliers.   We   raised   almost   £300   in   two   days,   which   I   think   is   incredible  for  artfully  designed  flour,  eggs  and  sugar!     This   was   such   an   easy   way   of   volunteering   my   time   to   help   someone   else.  I  love  to  bake  and  spend  my  free  time  doing  it,  and  this  way  I  got  to   bake,   organize   something   with   lists   (which   I   almost   love   as   much   as   cake)  and  raise  money  for  charity.  Simple  really.     @SamRSparrow

Example   two   involves   that   oft-‐ridiculed   hobby,   knitting.     I   do   so   love   the   feel   of   two   sticks   and   yarn   between   my   fingers   and   find   it   ultimately   relaxing,   creative   and   a   great   way   to   spend   an   evening.     Knitting   is   going   through   somewhat   of   a   renaissance,   with   every   trendy   celeb   doing   it,   ethical   and   exotic   yarn   sales   going   through   the   roof   and   blogs   and   social   media   platforms   dedicated   to   the   power   of   the   knit.   But   the   opportunities   to   spend   time   volunteering   whilst   also   knitting   are   also   growing  and  increasing,  which  is  great  for  time  poor  knitting  enthusiasts.         Some   ways   in   which   I   have   volunteered   my   knitting   skills   included   knitting  mini  bobble  hats  for  Innocent  Smoothie  bottles  to  raise  money   for   Age   UK,   contributing   a   blue   square   to   WaterAid’s   “Knit   a   River”   campaign,  knitting  breasts  for  local  maternity  wards  (no  joke,  honestly)   and  finally  knitting  a  full  size  hat  to  keep  fisherman  warm  on  behalf  of   Seafarers   UK.   All   quick   and   easy   ways   of   me   getting   my   knit   on   and   volunteering  for  a  good  cause.  At  the  same  time.     Finally,  I  mentioned  that  I  quite  like  fancy  dress.  Love  to  pull  together  a   good   costume,   discuss   options,   pull   out   my   sewing   machine   and   get   creative,   as   well   as   taking   many   pictures   of   myself   and   my   friends   looking   rather   daft   in   our   outfits.   It   might   baffle   you   to   wonder   how   this   particular,   peculiar   hobby   of   mine   can   contribute   in   any   way   to   humanity   or   mankind,   but   believe   me,   on   the   15th   May   when   I   am   jogging   around   Regents   Park   dressed   as   a   Super   Hero   I   will   be   contributing  blood,  sweat,  tears  and  a  rather  snazzy  Super  Woman  get-‐ up.   Publically   humiliating   yourself   in   fancy   dress   to   raise   money   for   @SamRSparrow

charity   might   not   be   everyone’s   cup   of   tea,   but   it   is   certainly   an   interesting  way  of  meeting  my  need  to  dress  in  a  ridiculous  way  whilst   serving  the  needs  of  the  charity  where  I  work.     So   there   are   three   live   examples   of   how   my   hobbies   regularly   give   me   the  opportunity  to  do  more  for  other  people,  contribute  to  society  a  bit   and  act  as  a  volunteer.    We  are  all  busy,  and  making  time  for  yourself  is   hard   enough,   but   if   you   can   identify   a   way   to   use   your   me   time   to   act   as   a   volunteer   and   have   fun   doing   something   you   love,   then   you   have   reached   the   holy   grail   of   volunteerism.   Why   not   take   a   look   at   your   hobbies,  be  it  photography,  stamp  collecting  or  even  train  spotting  and   see  if  you  can  make  them  work  just  a  little  bit  more.     It   is   all   about   turning   your   life   loves   into   warm   hugs   for   others.   And   maybe,   once   you’ve   got   the   taste   for   it,   those   warm   hugs   you’ve   been   giving   away   so   freely   to   others   could   become   your   life   loves…I   wonder   if   I  can  hashtag  that  on  Twitter…..     I’ve  been  Sam  Sparrow,  and  you  can  find  me  @samrsparrow  on  twitter   or   at   allthingsgoodandproper.wordpress.com   –   come   find   me   and   get   involved.  Thanks  for  listening  and  see  you  next  time  for  more  chatter  on   all  things  good  and  proper.
