SUNY Farmingdale ​Hi and welcome to this news video in which I am going to introduce my new project which is this. It is a multimedia server hotspot wifi 100% autonomous, such as you see it there he works you can see it, there is the green LED here that flashes. To present this project I will split the video into five parts : the first part that will be the presentation of the project, I have already started a little. The second part, i'm going to you briefly explain why I created this project and what is its interest. Third part i will talk to you about the limits of this project because unfortunately there are some limits. Fourth part you will see the demo, what can we do with this project. And the fifth part I will introduce you the components needed to do this project. If you are interested in this project I put you the link in the description of this video to the tutorial website. If you are bad at IT, don't be afraid go see the tutorial, read and you will see, just complete the steps one by one, copy paste, Enter, everyone is able to do it, so right now I attack the first part which is the presentation of the project so as I said it is a multimedia server hotspot Wifi 100% autonomous as you see it works, it doesn't need a external power sources it works as you see it there the base of this project is a Raspberry Pi 3 we can store on them movies, music, series of the photos... All that you want. The software it's linux light, so it's a linux without GUI everything happens on the command line, you will see it in the tutorial. The software "heart" of this server is PLEX Server. The advantage is that it is free there allows to stream audio and video, it supports the DLNA protocol which we will need but you will see it later in the fourth part in the demo. We have mounted on him a hard drive, here it is here below, and we have set it up a Wifi Hotspot to be able to connect different device. the advantage of Raspberry Pi 3 it's that they integrate directly the wifi card on his board, so it staysextremely compact. That's concludesthe first part of the video and I attack the second part : Why did I create this project and what are his interests. So, I do not know you but I am a dad of two childrenand when I go on vacation, for trips that last three four or even many more hours I wanted to take care of my children. The toys are fine for an hour or two but after there is nothing to do a little movie it calms them and we (parents) are cool. Initially, I had bought a car DVD/DiVX reader it's a device that's composed of two screens, one of which allow to play videos and in which one can insert DVD, and the other screen it allows only clown what the first screen displays. so what makes the two children were forced to look at the same movie, at the same time, so if like me me you have a girl and a boy and that they have different ages it was the disputes and the hours of negotiations. The other disadvantages of this device, it was limited only to the car, so yes, was a small battery in it allowed to watch a film outside the car but if you did not have 12 volt socket you were ù@%!&§... You are not able to do anything else. The last disadvantage of this device, it's only used for that... so you can play videos you can not do anything else... while with this project you have a Raspberry Pi, so today the Raspberry Pi it's a multimedia server but if you do not need it anymore, tomorrow you can use it for something else, for example as a brain of your home automation You have a hard drive, the hard drive today allows to store movies, tomorrow you can recycle it and use it in a pc. A battery, it's always interesting to have a battery when you go on vacation, to charge a phone or a tablet. Here as a screen you have two tablet or smartphones, with tablets, we do everything with tablets today... So the first interest is to use it in the car during long trips. The second interest is that this project can also serve you as home multimedia, at home, we will still prefer, for a home multimedia, a PC, but we talking here about troubleshooting solution. so you imagine you go on vacation in a hotel, you take just this with you, with a tablet, or a smartphone and you have the opportunity to watch movies where you want, in a hotel room, by the pool no matter you have a multitude of possibilities, it's up to you to see what you can do with it. OK, that concludes the second part. I attack the third part which are the limits of the project so when as I said the heart of this project it's a Raspberry Pi 3. A Raspberry Pi is a good machine but compare to a PC it's too light so we are limited to the power of the Raspberry Pi So for your movies files forget the mkv full hd it is not supported. I use mp4 format, my video files are optimized by plex servers that I installed on a pc which only served me for optimizing my videos for everything about video optimization go see my tutorial I made a page dedicated only to that. The resolution of my videos I use maximum 1280 x 720 pixels. At the level of autonomy, autonomy is the battery that decide. here we have a battery of 10 Amps. Today on the market there are new batterys. these batteries are also called power bank. You can find batteries of 20 Amps. It costs between 30 to 50 euros, it depends on where are you going to buy. In my exemple, I have a battery of 10 amps with an HDD of 128 Gb. I found that the consumption of the device as it is is 550 milliamperes / hours which represents a theoretical autonomy of 18 hours which is already not bad The longest test I've done it was a 3:30 hour car trip with two tablets, the ones you see on


the screen both tablets read during those 3:30 hours two different videos. When I arrived at my destination there were three LED of four that blinked. For the little story, when I unloaded the car, I forgot the Raspberry Pi in the glove box. The server stayed in the glove box turned on all night long. it was 8 to 9 hours. there were no tablets so no streaming. The next morning, I went to get him, I was surprised to see that there was one LED on the four who were on, so the server he continued to run. there is an opportunity to improve the autonomy of this server. Just replace the hard drive by something like this, so here it's an adapter with a small SD carte. With that I noticed that consumption was 0.35 Amps/hours, compared to 0.55 Amps with the hard drive, so we go from an autonomy of 18 hours to 28 hours. I say it's theoretical always with two tablets, so that's up to you to decide if you're going to use a HDD or a usb key with a micro SD card. Today the micro SD card are a bit expensive so if you want a card of 128 or 256, you will have to pay a lot. As I said, the autonomy is mainly defined by the batterythat you will use. But it is quite possible to use in this project this server without battery imagine you remove the battery you go inn your car you and connect your server to the cigarette lighter with a 5v transformer of the car, or in the hotel room it is also possible to connect it to the wall socket with an adapter always 5 volts. So you must decide how are you going to use it. Little precision when it works, when you read movies, when it stream movies, it heats a little, it's not huge but avoid putting it in a bag, or in a closed place personally I put it in the glove box of the car and it went really well. Here we go immediately to the demo. For the demo I will use two ipad and a smartphone with android. As software, I have installed on these devices Plex client. Attention, Plex client on ios is paying, 5,50 euros I think. to unlock all the features then you have a subscription system, but the subscription system I did not take, on android I think it's free, I'm not sure to check. In parallel with PLEX client, I installed VLC. The advantage of VLC is that it is free. Each of these apps has its advantages and its cons. With Plex and I had some bugs, so we will do the demo with both software. We will start with plex, so if at home it works with plex, continue to use plex but if like me you all have difficulties with plex we can always switch on vlc. The idea is to do the tests before you go on vacation, or traveling, so while traveling you are sure to know which software you will use to have the greatest stability possible. OK, now we will do the demo. The first thing is to make sure you are connected to the wifi of the Raspberry Pi. here is I see I'm connected on the good Wifi. I start plex here, and I start it here too. So you see it takes a little while so you have to be a little patient, and you see here it's automatically connected to the PlexPi, it is my raspberry pi server, and on the other tablet he can't connect. I did not check if they were connected on the good wifi, it's the good wifi it should be fine... I see that he connects to a bad servers. I see PlexPi... waiting for them to try to connect we'll go to the other tablet. Once plex starts honestly plex it's THE app with a large L that I advise you to use if it works because they offer opportunities, features that are very interesting for a media server. You can start a movie doing a break, resume it as soon as you have finished the break, on the other hand, if it does not work as on on the left tablet sometimes he does not want... so, here we will do the test with vlc. But with plex you see so we will start we will choose a movie so they offer you the cover the description, etc... You click on PLAY... ok, the movie begins, as your see it starts to flash here, so the movie really it comes from the Raspberry Pi, I will decrease the volume On the second tablet, as you see it does not work... it's crap you want to start your trip you want to put the film and it does not work... that's why I install VLC. What you need to know with VLC they use the protocol DLNA. No problem for the PLEX Server, he supports this protocol. Once you are connected to the wifi of the Raspberry Pi, there is nothing else to do. Install VLC, you start it, go to the little icon local networks, you wait for his load, my multimedia server is here, I choose it, I say that I want my video, my animes. My animes is the library I created on the PLEX server. I want to display all the anime list, there you wait a little bit he will load you the covers... And voilĂ ...Once loaded, you can start the movie. This one... for example... Here and the movie started. I will also decrease the sound. The third possibility is not use plex and not use vlc. The third possibility is simply an internet explorer. This is what we will do now. Unlock your device and make sure that you are on the wifi of the Raspberry Pi. it's not my case... hop... I connect to it. Once I'm connected, I'm going just start an internet explorer. in the address bar I enter the IP of my Raspberry Pi. Which in my case is : 192.168.4.1 Then you specify the port of the PLEX server which is the :32400, and jou type /web then ENTER. You arrive on the principal page the plex server. I admit the first time I recorded this sequence it did not work it's because I forgot to allow access from outside to my server. But once you have enabled it you arrive on the first server page. Attention, here you have full access so you can everything do, you can for example by mistake delete your library which may be a problem if you are on vacation. So be careful. Anyway, once in, you can surf in your librasy. I will go into Anims... We are always on a internet explorer so we did not install anything special. and we can start the movie. VoilĂ , here we go, it took a little while, in my opinion it's because my phone is old, rotten... But once it's run, it's ru. I do not say it's THE solution with an internet explorer but it can always help. So we have three devices that read at the same time three different movies on the Raspberry Pi 3. so, ok, that's works. Another adventage of PLEX


is that you can at any time out of your movie and the film continues here, you can surf the internet, come back and continue your movie, you can pause, close, the app the reopen and resume playback of the movie, which was not possible with VLC... With VLC, from the moment when you pause the movie, there is no possible to resume playback, especially if you turn off the tablet. There is no possibility to resume where it stopped. So when you go play, there will not continue, humm, he continues now... I turn off, I simulate a break, Okay, I think...here he also continues, on the other hand, if I close application,..., and I restart it... it works... lol. it did not work before, OK cool ! If it works. if I pause, I close application, and the tablet, we simulate a little break in the car, we unblock, we start play... He continue. Super. now it works, before it did not work I was not able to resume the reading of the movie. Do the tests before going on a trip see what is it works best for you to avoid having bad surprises during your holidays or during your travels. That's it for the demo. Now I'm going I'm going to attack now the last part of this presentation which is the presentation of the necessary componentsto do this project. So for that, I will first stop the videos because I don't know if I will turn off the PLEX server The components that you need are : First, a battery, a Raspberry Pi 3, a case to put your Raspberry Pi a micro SD card of minimum 8 giga to install linux. Here I chose a ssd hard drive but you can use this solution, a micro SD USB key. A cable, here I added a small connector 90° that allows me to keep that much more compact then here I needed another cable that connect my hard drive to my Raspberry Pi. I tied everything here with a elastic but you can well use what I call a zip it's something like that so you zip everything and it stays good in one For the hard drive if you take a hard drive I do not recommend to take a mechanical hard drive because when you go to take it on a trip, in your car, it will suffer shocks. and ssd hard drives resist So take a ssd or usb key. Little things I forgot to say about you is about the on/off which allows you easily turn on and off the multimedia server. Here I chosed as you see a flat button to prevent that when I'm going to put it for example in a bag or in the car it's to avoid thet something presses on it. But in any case the button as I said they can turn off and turn on turn off and turn on properly. Here you see it is on, sometime you have the green LED that flash up, but when I press the button, you see there a sequence begins. The green LED starts to flash a little more often and jou see... this sequence, here, and there it will go out. Voilà, the Raspberry Pi is off. And to turn it on, it's just also simple, just press the up button, the green LED starts blinking and the server boot.
