henever I recall this beloved phrase coined by Dr. Seuss, I never thought I’d find myself applying it to the cosmetic enhancement and beauty industry. But the innovations I’ve seen over the past few years are astounding. There simply is no other phrase to express my awe and intrigue. Cosmetic enhancement has come a long way and will only continue to advance at an accelerated pace as beauty-savvy women and men demand the most for their investment. We celebrate the roots of plastic surgery and non-invasive anti-aging procedures (p. 30), while looking forward to the leaps and bounds doctors and manufacturers have made when it comes to surgical techniques, skin-care formulas, fillers and laser technologies. With the latest 24-hour recovery period, women no longer need to worry about taking weeks off work or family responsibilities to get that boob job done. Patients can return to their daily lives within a day, provided that no heavy lifting is involved. You can pick your jaw off the floor now and turn to page 32 to learn more. Finally, writer Aurea Dempsey shares the amazing healing power of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) when it comes to skin and facial rejuvenation and even hair growth (p. 35). With the fall season here, it’s time to toss those forgotten beauty products we didn’t love and refresh our regimens with new goodies. Fill up your cabinets with products to create autumn’s hottest beauty looks, found in our Trend Report (p. 42). I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as the team loved creating it for you.

STAR radar MENDES JOINS ESTÉE LAUDER BY AMANPREET DHAMI

Bündchen

When it comes to celebrity endorsements, there are plenty I’ve questioned (Miley Cyrus shouldn’t rep anything, in my opinion), but Estée Lauder’s new face, Eva Mendes is definitely not one to question. As a mother of two, creative director of her own beauty line, Circa, and a successful Hollywood blockbuster actress (who didn’t love her in Hitch?) with skin that every woman would die for, she’s a woman most of us could aspire to. Mendes has always admired both the brand and the woman behind, Estée Lauder, and she’s thrilled to endorse New Dimension skin care because it represents the power women have to take control and transform their own

beauty. Look out for Mendes in the digital, TV and print campaigns for New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum and New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape this fall!

Supermodel Gisele was caught masquerading in a burka upon visiting a plastic surgeon in Paris. Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who has taken our breath away since her debut in 1996 at New York Fashion Week, shocked fans earlier this year when she and her sister were spotted wearing a burka, a traditional Muslim covering in Paris during Ramadan as an attempt to disguise her identity while visiting a plastic surgeon. After expressing dissatisfaction with her sagging breasts, and her intention to retire from her modelling career this year, Bündchen was seen entering the renowned Clinique Internationale du Parc Monceau in Paris to get surgery done on her breasts and eyes. Our question to Bündchen: Are the rumours true? If so, perhaps your previous public declaration at the age of 27 that you would never get surgery was a bit premature. Never, say never! Finally, Gisele if you wanted to be stealthy about your cosmetic procedures, leave religious garments out of it. Worn as a sign of modesty by devout Islamic women, the burka should be respected for what it is, not worn by the rest of us for our personal schemes and devices.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF CAITLYN JENNER Understanding the emotional impact of cosmetic enhancement.

BY NICOLE LIPPAY You’d have to be living under a rock to have missed the headlines about Caitlyn Jenner’s (formerly Bruce Jenner) gender transformation. Now identifying as a female, Jenner underwent facial plastic surgery to feminize and soften her features this past spring. While the media had a slew of opinions on the matter (typical), we’re impressed with how natural Caitlyn’s face looks and how successful the surgery was. Jenner’s story shows just how advanced plastic surgery is today and will hopefully shed some light on the emotional impact that cosmetic enhancement can have. To read more about the procedure, visit elevatemagazine.com.

sweet dreams, STELLAR SKIN

Why night-specific products are a must for your bedtime routine. BY NICOLE LIPPAY As a faithful Elevate reader, you surely have your skin-care routine down pat. But are you using specialized night creams and serums? Beauty sleep is more than just an old wives’ tale: Products formulated for nighttime use a different balance of ingredients than day creams, and are usually more potent. One of the most popular ingredients in night creams is retinol, since it’s a photosensitive ingredient (meaning it loses its efficacy when exposed to the light). Retinol is the most concentrated form of vitamin A, so you’ll want to make sure it’s working at its best! When you’re in REM sleep, your organs are repairing themselves from the stresses of the day—this includes your skin. Maximize this time and feed your skin the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and glowing. MATRIXYL SYNTHE’6 Nova C60 Night Cream, ($49.99, novac60.com)

PHILOSOPHY RENEWED HOPE IN A JAR The moisturizer I can’t live without. BY NICOLE LIPPAY When I first discovered Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar ($52, Sephora), I couldn’t get over how the name resonated with me! For years I’ve tried all kinds of products to make my skin happy, literally hoping for the best when trying something new. This moisturizer definitely does it for me: It’s very lightweight and loaded with hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. It contains an ingredient we’ve been hearing a lot about, prickly pear flower extract, which helps stimulate skin’s enzymes to enhance your natural glow. After using the improved Renewed Hope in a Jar consistently, my skin has never looked or felt fresher!

sugar...OH, HONEY, HONEY Read this before reaching for that second cookie! BY AMANPREET DHAMI Do you struggle for a sugary snack every day at 3 p.m. to push you through the rest of the day? Well, you’re not alone, according to Statistics Canada: in 2004, Canadians consumed 110 grams of sugar a day, the equivalent of 26 teaspoons. Although sugar gives you energy by boosting your serotonin levels temporarily, too many carb-laden and sweet indulgences can actually start to show on your skin in the long run because of a process called glycation. (Yep, too many chocolate bars may give rise to some wrinkles if you aren’t careful!)

WHAT IS GLYCATION? “Glycation is a naturally occurring chemical reaction between a sugar molecule and a protein or lipid in the body,” explains Dr. Frauke Neuser, a senior scientist for Olay. “In skin, excess sugar molecules react with skin proteins like collagen, elastin and keratin, leaving them less effective at functioning and repairing themselves.” Over time skin becomes drier and less elastic, resulting in wrinkles, sagging and dullness.

3

TIPS TO REDUCE GLYCATION DAMAGE

1. REDUCE YOUR DAILY SUGAR LEVELS, ESPECIALLY REFINED SUGAR. Common culprits include pop, desserts, candy, syrups and honey. According to the World Health Organization, we should not consume more than 25 grams of sugar per day. Cut yourself off if you get past 1.5 ounces of a chocolate! 2. GET IN A FULL NIGHT OF ZZZS. “Olay scientists have found that the hormone melatonin that is produced during sleep reduces damage caused by glycation by half,” says Dr. Neuser. 3. SLATHER ON SKIN CARE RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS. Glycation is an oxidative reaction, so the use of antioxidants, such as vitamins B3 (niacinamide), C and E, can mitigate the damage caused by sugar. In addition peptide-rich products that promote the production of collagen and elastin will keep your skin hydrated and strong.

CUT THE SUGAR!

No matter how diligently you take care of your skin on the outside, you need to nourish from the inside, too! Visit elevatemagazine.com to learn more about how sugar in your diet affects your skin.

Infused with bamboo sap, this ultra-hydrating compact keeps my face flawless by filling in fine lines, moisturizing my skin and providing seamless, yet light coverage. Patented by Guinot, the massage technique (the third stage of the facial after the application of an exfoliation cream and antiaging serum) is likened to facial gymnastics because of its focus on toning and plumping specific areas of the face, such as hollowed cheeks, draining eye bags, lifting under the eyes and plumping forehead lines. The massage, which is deeper than most facials and feels

super-relaxing, combined with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and pro-collagen, provides best results with a series of three treatments one week apart followed by regular monthly maintenance. COST: $159 (When you purchase three facials at Elmwood Spa, your fourth is free).

YOUR body skin SOS

Our favourite products to help dehydrated, sensitive skin. BY AMANPREET DHAMI AND NICOLE LIPPAY Our skin takes a lot of abuse during the sunny, summer months. Once autumn comes around, skin can feel dehydrated and more sensitive than usual. Give your skin a little TLC and treat it to some gentler products geared towards sensitivity. We’ve rounded up some of our favourites for you!

Nicole’s Faves

Amanpreet’s Faves

This natural soap is a luxurious treat leaving my skin refreshingly clean after each use with just the right amount of moisture from the olive oil left behind on my skin. My skin doesn’t feel tight, thirsty or scaly. Scentuals Soft Patchouli Soap ($5.50, spas, retail stores, scentualsbodycare.com) gives me a spa like experience without breaking the bank. The unique scent blends together, patchouli, neroli and citrus, making every bath a nourishing ritual. – AMANPREET DHAMI

I have a bit of an obsession with goat’s milk soap, so I was pretty excited to try Caprina Fresh Goat’s Milk Body Lotion with Lavender Oil ($10.99, well.ca)—it did not disappoint! The formula feels rich but absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling amazingly soft. I feel great supporting a Canadian company, too! – NICOLE LIPPAY

When it comes to body scrubs, I just can’t get enough of them! Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub ($68, Murale, murale.ca) features five biodegradable exfoliants—Hawaiian and Himalayan pink sea salt, cranberry fibres, apricot seed powder and organic sugar that leave my skin feeling silky smooth. Unlike synthetic microbeads, which can actually damage skin and cause havoc to the environment, the natural exfoliants keep you feeling guilt free when indulging in this scrub. – AD

WorldSalon was one of the first salons in Toronto to introduce green products, back in the 1990s. Its newly rebranded Clean Hair and Skin Cleanser ($29, world.ca) is incredibly nourishing, with cucumber extract, ivy root and vitamins A through E. I love that you can add essential oil blends for your own desired fragrance level. – NL

nether regions FemiLift, the newest in innovative vaginal procedures. With vagacials, whitening treatments and Brazilians, it’s no surprise that non-invasive technologies to address other concerns with the vaginal area are gaining traction in the cosmetic enhancement market. In fact, at the 2015 Aesthetic Show in Las Vegas, vaginal tightening was cited as one of the top three growing aesthetic trends, alongside men’s treatments and body contouring. The new FemiLift, by Alma Lasers, (distributed by Salient Medical) responds to this trend. According to Dr. Sharyn A. Laughlin, MD, a dermatologist from Ottawa’s Laserderm (laserderm.ca), “This CO2 laser addresses three large concerns for women: vaginal laxity (which occurs after childbirth), stressinduced urinary incontinence and dryness.” FemiLift is also believed to increase sensation for patients, although this is not the main reason for its use. HOW IT WORKS “FemiLift delivers fractional laser ablation to the vaginal mucosa with the treatment’s handpiece, which allows for thickening of the vaginal wall due to collagen remodeling,” says Dr. Laughlin. “This thickening, in turn allows the vaginal canal to tighten and also secure the pelvic floor to help return bladder control when sneezing, coughing or jumping). Most patients notice an improvement in symptoms in a single treatment.”

After brushing with Colgate Optic White Toothpaste, simply remove the pen from your toothbrush and paint the solution on your teeth. Since the whitening pen is built right into your toothbrush, you won’t forget about it and it can’t get buried in your medicine cabinet. Your teeth will look whiter in just a matter of days, so you’ll know it’s working!

GREENPICK VEGAN LIPSTICK THAT DOES THE JOB! BY AMANPREET DHAMI When it comes to natural products, I’m all over skin and body care, but I hesitate with colour. Why? Either the pigment misses the mark, the texture is too dry or the formulas can’t complete with the efficacy and results of department store and luxury makeup brands. But the StormSister lipstick line, complete with 14 versatile shades named after real women in founder Becky Sturm’s life, is a pleasant and unusual exception. The lipsticks are rich and creamy; the colour

payoff is amazing (no need to apply layers to get the boldness you want) and the formula stays put for hours. With only vegan, gluten-free and ethically sourced ingredients, these lipsticks let you pay it forward by simply wearing them.

HYGIENIST CLINICS

Cost-effective options for patients for oral health services. With dwindling dental insurance plans, many Canadians can’t afford dental services, which often leads to cost-prohibitive procedures in later years that could have been avoided. But the emerging trend of dental hygienist clinics may bode well for Canadians’ oral health. We spoke with Anaida Deti, a registered dental hygienist and CEO of Dental-X Smile Centres (dental-xsmilecentres.com), who gave us the lowdown on these clinics.

fact DENTAL HYGIENISTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OPEN THEIR OWN CLINICS SINCE 2007.

24

e-so15_news_smile.3-1R.indd 24

WHAT ARE THEY? Dental hygienist clinics offer services that a hygienist is licensed to provide without the supervision of a dentist, including assessment of oral conditions, oral cancer screening, professional teeth cleaning (scaling), stain removal (polishing), fluoride treatments, desensitizing, pit and fissure sealants and teeth whitening. WHY TRY HYGIENIST CLINICS? You may be asking, Why should I bother? I have a dentist already. The benefits of these clinics include more reasonable pricing for services, since a hygienist’s fee guide is 25 per cent lower than a dentist’s

fee guide. The clinics also “focus [more] on the preventive side of dentistry,” explains Deti. “We spend an enormous time on oral hygiene instructions and how to properly take care of your teeth and gums. Dental hygienists take their time listening to the concerns that patients have instead of the “rush” and the fast pace that you get at some dental offices.” This extra care means your mouth is healthier for longer and fewer dental bills when you’re older. DO I NEED TO CONTINUE SEEING MY DENTIST? Yes. Although hygienists can provide some services, when a hygienist notices the need for a procedure beyond the scope of her practice, she will refer a patient to an appropriate dental professional for more involved dental care. IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD LOOK FOR? Make sure you go to a reputable hygenist clinic. As with any practitioner, the best way is to start with a consultation, so you feel comfortable that your needs can be met. ADVERTORIAL

HAVE A CASE OF TATTOO REGRET? Your ex’s name is on your forearm and you just got engaged to someone else. You’re not feeling that dragon tattoo on your back anymore, or the ink you got in college hasn’t stood the test of time. There are a lot of reasons to rethink your ink, but the pain, costs and the dozen or more treatment sessions needed can keep you from taking the next step. Enter the PicoWay® dual-wavelength picosecond laser from Syneron-Candela. The PicoWay picosecond technology is ultra fast - literally one trillionth, or one millionth of one millionth of a second per pulse. These short bursts of powerful energy blast the ink into tiny particles with absolute precision. The smaller the particles, the easier they are for the body to eliminate naturally. Faster clearance means fewer sessions and less risk side effects, even on darker skin tones.

AFTER 5 PICOWAY TREATMENTS

PicoWay can be used to treat the broadest range of ink types and colors, even black and multicolored tattoos and previously treated tattoos that no longer respond. There is minimal discomfort, and it works much faster than older methods, so you can reduce your tattoos safely in as few as 3 to 4 quick treatments. Right after a treatment, you can get back to work or go to the gym without any downtime. What’s more, PicoWay also works to reduce pigmented lesions, such as sun damage, birthmarks, and dark marks that linger from acne breakouts or other skin injuries. So if you’re ready to change or correct an old tattoo or make room for a new one, or you want to get rid of brown spots, just say no to the pain and long cycle of treatments of other methods. Ask your doctor about the PicoWay laser, the faster, easier way to reverse tattoos and pigmentation. Find out more at http://www.picowaylaser.com

THE FUTURE IS NOW The field of cosmetic enhancement is one that is constantly growing and changing, and the areas of cosmetic injectables and lasers have seen an incredible amount of evolution. Here’s an up-close look at where we’ve been and where we’re headed next when it comes to Botox, dermal fillers and lasers. BY MARISSA PONIKOWSKI

Injectable silicone is first used as a dermal implant but becomes banned because of risks associated with injection.

Injectable paraffin gains popularity as a facial filler until a high incidence of foreign body granuloma (inflamed nodule) formation is discovered.

Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) lasers are developed at Bell Laboratories.

A researcher discovers that when botulinum toxin is injected into an overactive muscle, the activity reduces.

BOTULINUM TOXIN

Also known as Botox or botulinum toxin type A, this cosmetic injection blocks the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This relaxes and smooths the look of lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements.

THE INSIDE STORY Botox isn’t the only name in the game anymore: Since the discovery of botulinum toxin, Dysport and Xeomin have also been approved and, although Botox is still the most popular, are commonly injected in the United States and Canada. And the ways

Smaller but more powerful lasers become available and appear in community hospitals and physicians’ offices.

Autologous collagen processed from harvested fat is first used for dermal augmentation.

these injectables are used have changed, too: “In the beginning, it was more of a cookie cutter approach,” says Dr. Vince Bertucci, MD, FRCPC, medical director of Bertucci MedSpa in Woodbridge, Ontario. “Most patients received the same style of treatment, but we now recognize that treatments have to be individualized, with the treatment of each area adjusted to muscle bulk and activity in that area.” Dr. Bertucci also notes that Botox is used more widely now, to treat not only “number eleven” lines between the eyebrows and glabella lines across the forehead but also crow’s feet, bunny lines (around the nose) and perioral lines (around the nose), chin lines. “It’s really become a very customized treatment, because no two people are alike and individual assessment is paramount.”

It’s official: Canadians love Botox. There were more than 100,000 Botox treatments in Canada in 2003, and by 2005 that number had increased to 142,374.

Pulsed light lasers begin to be used for the treatment of port wine stains and strawberry marks in children, followed by the first Q-switched lasers for tattoo removal.

The name Botox is trademarked and acquired by Allergan.

WHAT’S NEXT? Botox will continue to be used for a variety of areas, and the importance of finding a skilled practitioner who can deliver the most natural look possible will grow. “It’s about going to someone who has experience and knows how to apply the most advanced techniques,” says Dr. Bertucci.

COST All practitioners have a unique fee structure, but botulinum toxin costs about $12 per unit and several units are needed per treatment—this cost has been consistent over the past decade.

LASERS

“Lasers for resurfacing and contouring have undergone great improvements in the past decade,” says Dr. Fred Weksberg, MD, FRCPC.

THE INSIDE STORY For resurfacing, the greatest change in lasers has been in the development of fractional resurfacing. “This change was driven by the desire to deliver safer treatments with fewer side effects. While it is true that the

older, traditional CO2 resurfacing can achieve smoother results with one treatment, the downside is an increased risk for side effects, such as scarring, persistent redness, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and infection.” The latest technology uses either ablative or non-ablative types of fractional resurfacing lasers. While it does take repeated treatment sessions with these fractional lasers, it is well worth the extra sessions to take advantage of the lower side effect/complication profile,” says Dr. Weksberg.

Hyaluronic acid derivatives are discovered to be beneficial in dermal filling.

Developments in hair laser technology take centre stage.

Botox is officially approved for fixing frown lines.

DERMAL FILLERS

The dermal fillers most commonly used today are hyaluronic acid-based. They help diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. They can also be used to plump thin lips, soften facial creases and wrinkles, improve the appearance of recessed scars and fight early signs of aging.

THE INSIDE STORY In the beginning, there wasn’t much choice when it came to dermal fillers, says Dr. Bertucci. “At first, it was only collagens; then, in the ‘90s, when hyaluronics were introduced, they actually weren’t very long-lasting.” Now, the hyaluronic acid used in fillers has much more staying power and, like Botox, the treatments are more customizable to individual needs. “Also, whereas fillers were used for the lips and nasolabial folds before, we now realize that there is much more to beauty than these two areas.” Basically, it’s all about harmony, elevatemagazine.com

e-so15_enhance_Origins.3-1R.indd 31

“I foresee a continuation of laser development with a “fractional approach,” says Dr. Weksberg. “Lasers will become more effective, with fewer complications. I also see more combination treatments coming together for ultimate patient satisfaction.”

COST Prices vary for laser

In 2003, there were more than 302,000 surgical and non-surgical cosmetic enhancements performed in Canada.

The FDA approves the first laser for hair removal: the Nd:YAG laser.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Hyaluronic acid fillers Restylane and Juvéderm are approved by the FDA.

Botox is officially approved for excessive underarm sweating.

treatments but have become more affordable than in the past decade. Ask your cosmetic enhancement professional for more information.

Ovita HV, the first filler developed and manufactured in Canada, is approved by Health Canada.

balance, symmetry and a natural appearance. “So we’re now doing global facial treatments, from the forehead all the way down to the neck.” To achieve a natural look, customization of treatment is key. “There was a time, and it still happens sometimes, when fillers were being overdone, but we’re recognizing that a natural look is key.” For a not-overdone look, a combination of different types of fillers for different areas, as well as different delivery techniques, is being used. “Before, we were using needles for everything, but we now recognize that cannulas have a definite role to play,” explains Dr. Bertucci. Cannulas have added a new dimension to dermal filler treatments because they allow for a lower risk of complications, such as bruising, in certain areas and broader areas can be treated. “They won’t replace needles, but instead they act as a complement.”

Botox is available for 21 different uses in 80 countries, and its medical and cosmetic versatility continues to be explored by researchers and physicians.

WHAT’S NEXT? In Europe and some other parts of the world, skin hydration with hyaluronic acid fillers is a new trend. This involves the use of micro-quantities of filler injected very superficially into the skin to hydrate and improve skin quality.

COST Over the past decade, prices have been fairly consistent, at $100 to $250 per dermal filler treatment.

In Canada in 2003, more than 42,000 injectable filler treatments were administered. september + oc tober.15 | elevate

IF

there’s one anecdote that is sure to sell prospective patients on the benefits of the 24-hourrecovery breast augmentation procedure, this is it: Imagine having a boob job on a Friday and then lazing on a beach in Florida the very next morning. This is exactly what one patient did after getting the operation done by Dr. Mahmood Kara, MD, FRCSC, who has been performing the 24-hour-recovery breast augmentation procedure for the past 10 years.

POST-SURGERY ROUTINE With traditional breast augmentation surgery, patients take time off work and refrain from their regular activities for several days while they recover. With the 24-hourrecovery method, patients are told to start moving right away and can return to their regular activities that evening or the next day. Following surgery with the 24-hourrecovery method, doctors advise patients to perform arm exercises where they move their arms in what Dr. Kara describes as a “jumping jack fashion” – patients are supposed to do this five times every hour. Apart from intense work and heavy exercise, patients can do most things. “It’s back to their normal routines—they lie down for a couple of hours, have a shower and go out for dinner,” says Dr. Kara. “Most of the time, all they need is Advil.”

WHAT IS IT? Dr. John Tebbetts, MD, a plastic surgeon based in Dallas, developed the 24-hourrecovery breast augmentation surgery method in 2004. The method involves proper preoperative planning, using certain instruments and a special technique during the procedure, and a post-operative routine that “allows patients to be essentially painfree and able to go out for dinner the night after surgery,” according to Dr. Kara. Dr. Kara, who has offices in Toronto, Whitby and Oakville, trained with Dr. Tebbetts to learn the technique and says he was one of the first plastic surgeons to introduce the procedure in Canada. The procedure involves a series of steps, beginning with selecting the right implant. There’s also no bleeding during the procedure, thanks to the use of special cautery forceps – Dr. Kara coagulates the blood vessel before it bleeds. Other

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR THIS? According to Dr. Kara, anyone who is a candidate for traditional breast augmentation is also a candidate for the 24-hour-recovery method. The“ideal” patient is relatively healthy and maintains a healthy weight.

TECHNIQUE

Aside from the fast recovery time and absence of bleeding, the 24-hour-recovery breast augmentation has many advantages. With traditional breast augmentation surgery, patients need strong pain medication, such as Tylenol 3 or Percocet, but with the 24-hour-recovery method, patients typically only take ibuprofen for pain management. Dr. Kara says patients liken the sensation following surgery to what it feels like “when their milk comes in” after giving birth. In other words, the pain is not acute and is very manageable. Patients also don’t need drainage tubes or any dressings and typically don’t experience any bruising. Because of the anti-nausea medication given and the type of anaesthetic used (called TIVA), Dr. Kara says that, when the patient awakens, “It’s like they’ve never even had any surgery.” They typically don’t feel nauseous and are out and about soon after the procedure.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS With the 24-hour-recovery breast augmentation procedure, patients tend to have fewer post-operative problems, such as capsular contracture and bleeding or issues with the implant shifting, according to Dr. Kara. “I’ve never experienced bleeding with this technique,” he says, adding that any potential side effects are reduced.

BEYOND THE vampire FACIAL Investigating the wonders of PRP for a healthier and glowing you. BY AUREA DEMPSEY

W

ant to reclaim the youthful glow of days past or grow thicker hair as you age? For a safe and effective solution, you may want to start with your own blood. That’s because, along with red and white blood cells, our blood contains a gold mine of powerful platelets, that activate growth factors in the body. Although it’s been gaining momentum for cosmetic use in doctors’ offices for years now, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is becoming more widely available to target signs of aging and hair growth. Curious to learn more, we consulted two leading experts to get the 411 on PRP.

For those seeking a younger, glowing complexion, PRP plumps the skin much like a dermal filler, such as Restylane or Juvéderm, except the plumping happens naturally over time. WHAT EXACTLY IS PRP? PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Used by doctors since the early 1970s, mostly in the fields of dental, cardiovascular surgery and sports medicine, PRP therapy activates growth factors in the body, promoting faster and better healing and repair to damaged tissue.

HOW IS PRP PERFORMED?

PHOTO: THINKSTOCK

After a nurse draws a patient’s blood, the blood is placed in a centrifuge and spun down into layers. The platelet-poor plasma (red blood cells) layer is discarded, leaving a small amount of yellow serum rich in platelets—up to five times the amount compared to normal blood. This platelet-rich plasma is then mixed with a solution, such as thrombin or calcium chloride, to form a gel-like consistency. It’s then injected back into the patient to activate growth and repair collagen or angiogenesis (new blood cell formation). For those seeking a younger, glowing complexion, PRP plumps the skin much like a dermal filler, such as Restylane or Juvéderm, except the plumping happens naturally over time.

STRAIGHT FROM THE EXPERTS According to Dr. David Ellis, MD, FRCSC, FACS, an otolaryngologist head and neck surgeon specializing in facial plastic surgery, he uses PRP much like a powerful skin-care product to stimulate faster healing following an ablative procedure, and promote longer-lasting results in conjunction with dermal fillers. “For many of my patients seeking a more youthful appearance, they want results but without the downtime,” he says. “PRP fulfills this need, with next to no pain or discomfort. For hair growth, it helps to ‘wake up’ the follicles, promoting thicker hair growth over time.” While clinical research is still early in development, before and after photos show that PRP can help address a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

1 2 3

FACIAL REJUVENATION When injected directly into the face, PRP goes directly below the skin’s surface to wake up collagen and stimulate increased production. With increased collagen and elastin (the skin’s vitally important scaffolding), skin appears plumper, with a wonderful-looking glow. HAIR GROWTH By injecting PRP into a patient’s scalp, the doctor is able to target the patient’s hair shaft, stimulating growth and thickness. It can also assist with hair transplant surgeries for faster healing and repair. But remember, PRP does not magically make hair grow where there is no hair (that is, balding men); follicles must be present for PRP to really work.

TREATMENT OF SCARS, DARK CIRCLES AND OTHER SKIN IRREGULARITIES Along with promoting a youthful glow, PRP can reduce the appearance of scars, rosacea and other skin irregularities caused during liposuction or transferable fat procedures. It can also be used to improve areas of the neck and chest, as well as the back of hands and arms.

DECODING COSMETIC TERMINOLOGY Is PRP the same thing as a vampire facelift? This term has been floating around for some time now, and refers to the combination of hyaluronic filler with PRP. While the end result doesn’t actually “lift” the skin, the combination produces an ideal effect: The patient receives the immediate benefits of the filler with more improvements to come thanks to PRP. “Although PRP can be used as a filler, the filling effect is not as pronounced as one would see with a hyaluronic filler,” says Dr. Kolenda, “So I prefer to mix PRP with the filler to get better results.”

COSTS & RESULTS To get the best result, get three treatments performed one month apart. This will last for up to a year or more and will cost between $500 and $1,000.

“For many of my patients seeking a more youthful appearance, they want results, but they don’t want downtime. PRP fulfills this need, with next to no pain or discomfort. For hair growth, it helps to ‘wake up’ the follicles, promoting thicker hair growth over time.”

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE PRP?

36

REASON 1

REASON 2

THERE’S NEXT TO NO RISK OF REJECTION. Unlike other injectable fillers, PRP is not a foreign substance and comes with very little risk of rejection by the body. According to Dr. Jack Kolenda, MD, FRCSC, medical director at the Verso Surgery Centre and a plastic surgeon who offers PRP in his roster of services, “Being an autologous product, there is no concern about an inflammatory response when it is used as a filler, but one must remember that inflammatory responses to hyaluronic fillers are low in incidence.”

THE TREATMENT IS RELATIVELY FAST, WITH LITTLE TO NO PAIN OR DOWNTIME. While ablative procedures typically require days of downtime with swelling and discomfort, PRP is not painful and requires no downtime. One PRP treatment takes less than an hour. Immediately following, the skin may look red and somewhat swollen, but this fades in a few hours. You are probably asking, where can I sign up?

PREVENTIVE MEASURES Studies have shown that making lifestyle changes can reduce your chances of developing breast cancer. Here are the top five healthy lifestyle choices you can make today.

1. Limit alcohol to one drink of beer, wine or spirits per day.

2. Butt out, as research has linked smoking to breast cancer, particularly among premenopausal women.

3. Maintain a healthy weight. 4. Get a move on. Along with helping you

maintain a healthy weight, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity will help you reduce stress.

5. Some studies indicate that moms who breastfeed their babies are less likely to develop breast cancer.

OF BREAST CANCERS ARE THOUGHT TO BE HEREDITARY, CAUSED BY ABNORMAL GENES PASSED FROM PARENT TO CHILD.

FACT

Most inherited cases of breast cancer are associated with two abnormal genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2.

TYPES OF RECONSTRUCTION “Generally speaking, there are three techniques used in breast reconstruction.” explains Dr. Toni Zhong, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at University Health Network in Toronto. One technique uses an implant, the other uses the patient’s tissue, and a third uses a combination of the two. NEW TECHNIQUE: “With reconstruction using a woman’s tissue, the tissue is removed and then a microsurgical procedure is used to preserve the tissue and muscle. The tissue is generally taken from excess abdominal tissue, similar to a tummy tuck surgery,” says Dr. Zhong. MOTHER, MOTHER Dr. Zhong sees that a number of women who are younger with active families often opt for breast implant surgery because the recovery time is reduced. In addition, because reconstruction using a patient’s own tissue can only be performed once, Dr. Zhong says many young moms will wait for this procedure until their children are a little older. CHOOSING A SURGEON Above all, Dr. Zhong emphasizes the importance of trusting your surgeon. “I encourage patients to research surgeons and find out how much of their practice is focused on breast reconstruction,” explains Dr. Zhong. “You want to know that your surgeon can offer you the full complement of choices.”

THE

SUN FIX No matter what your sun damage concerns are, we’ve got all the fixes. BY ASHLEY KOWALEWSKI

SUMMER ENJOYING THE SUN, BUT EVEN IF YOU WERE DILIGENT IN YOUR SPF RITUALS, THERE MAY STILL BE SOME SIGNS OF TOO MUCH FUN IN THE SUN SHOWING ON YOUR SKIN.

THE FIXER-UPPER

Indicators that you’ve spent too much time in the sun can come in many different shapes and sizes, but almost all fall under signs of “photoaging.” Photoaging, defined as “premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation” by the Canadian Dermatology Association (dermatology.ca), has several different signs for you to keep a lookout for.

WRINKLES/FINE LINES Fine lines and deep-set wrinkles start to appear around your eyes, mouth and forehead. You’ll likely notice these lines in areas that you’d get them anyway (hello, crow’s feet and frown lines), but sun exposure expedites the aging process, defining those lines sooner than expected.

DULL SKIN TEXTURE One of the hallmarks of sun damage on your skin is poor texture and overall dullness, as well as reduced elasticity. A general loss of skin

40

elevate | september + oc tober.15

e-so15_enhance_sunfix.3-2.indd 40

tone in sun-exposed areas is common, as well as leathery-looking and saggy skin. A vintage leather purse is great, but we definitely know that’s not the look we’re going for with our faces, and we assume you aren’t either!

BROWN SPOTS/DISCOLOURATION Those new freckles that popped up midJuly? Not as cute as they seem. The Canadian Dermatology Association lists brown spots, freckles and spider veins on the nose, cheeks and neck as results of sun damage in the form of hyperpigmentation.

THE IN-OFFICE FIX

For those of us who want quicker and more effective results, we chatted with Dr. Martie Gidon, MD, FRCPC, FAAD, a cosmetic dermatologist and director of Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa (gidonaesthetics.com) regarding in-office treatments and procedures to remedy your skin concerns depending on your skin type. Dr. Gidon warns, “Patients with tanned

skin or darker complexions should not have certain laser treatments, since skin can burn or blister and result in darker or lighter spots that are very difficult to treat.”

of skin, bypassing the surface layer of skin for quicker healing time while improving the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.

WRINKLES/FINE LINES

To treat dark spots, Dr. Gidon recommends intensed pulsed light (IPL) laser therapy ($400 per treatment), which consists of a very bright light that fades dark spots and spider veins, though there will be some bruising and darker discolouration for a few days before it fades. Gemology DermControl Lightening Treatment ($90 per treatment, danielehenkel.com for locations) helps to slow the darkening process of sun spots while lightening skin from sun damage in the process.

Dr. Gidon explains that the Fraxel laser works best to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The Fraxel DUAL Laser ($950 per treatment) delivers tiny beams of laser energy into the skin to eliminate old surface skin cells and stimulate collagen production, improving fine lines for smoother, clearer skin. Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser (packages starting at $1,300, available at Compass Dermatology, compassdermatology.ca) is a hybrid fractional laser that targets the collagen layer

DISCOLOURATION

SKIN TEXTURE For this concern, Dr. Gidon suggests multiple treatments (if needed) of the OxyGeneo 3-in-1 Super Facial ($150 per treatment). This treatment exfoliates the dead surface skin, infuses brightening or renewing serums and causes increased blood flow to the skin to help absorb the serum, leaving skin smoother and more radiant, while helping to fade brown spots. The two new devices take the OxyGeneo treatment to the next level: The TriPollar radiofrequency tightens skin, and instantly rejuvenates skin; the ultrasound, promotes deeper infusion of the active ingredients within the OxyGeneo serum, to better absorb of any skin-care products used after the treatment.

THE AT-HOME FIX

Depending on your particular sun-fix prognosis start your repair process with these at-home skin-care products.

PLUMP AND FIRM Those wrinkles and fine lines may not get completely filled in, but you can certainly work on plumping and firming your skin with some at-home care, reducing the appearance of pesky fine lines and wrinkles. Add elasticity and smooth out your skin’s texture with Babor ReVersive Anti-Aging Dual Serum ($265, babor.com). The serum comes in a set of four bottles (for four weeks of treatments) that only become activated when you need them, giving you the best anti-aging results. Infused with the line’s Re-Youth Complex, the whole roster slows down signs of aging while adding elasticity, boosting radiance and ironing out the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

elevatemagazine.com

BRIGHTEN Sungoers suffering from brown spots or even just a dull skin tone should reach for the new Shiseido White Lucent All Day Brightener ($68, shiseido.ca). Designed to brighten skin and dark spots with a timereleased formula infused with a highly active form of vitamin C (known for its skin-brightening properties), it leaves behind a more luminous, spotfree finish. And since sun protection is a must, this hydrating morning moisturizer comes packed with SPF 22 to protect your skin while doing the heavy lifting.

EVEN With its newest launches, Rodial Super Acids X-Treme Exfoliating Glycolic Cleanser and Daily Azelaic Acid Serum ($36 and $98, available at Murale)offer light exfoliation to even out skin tone and boost radiance with a cocktail of ingredients that includes licorice extract and pronalen fruit acid. While your neck may not get as much direct sunlight in your day-to-day routine as your face, it’s a place that loudly shows off those signs ofaging. Racinne Ultimate Youth Power Neck Emulsion ($44, racinne. ca) targets the sensitive skin of the neck to tighten and smooth skin and even out skintone and texture with ginseng callus extract and hydrating hyaluronic acid.

E XPRE SS YOURSE LF B E AUT Y “This season, it’s more of a feeling of fall,”says Lee. “This is what’s happening on the international runways. It’s about upgrading the individual so makeup doesn’t have to follow mainstream as much. A red lip works for you? Wear red lips. If you want a full brow, wear a full brow. I think it’s kind of cool to be individual. Women don’t have to be like “Ugh, I have to wear black eyeliner?” because right now it’s a black eyeliner. Things just keep changing, so if you can express yourself as an individual, that’s a trend.”

UPGRADING the INDIVIDUAL This fall, make a personal beauty impression when it comes to your nails, makeup and hair and choose the trends that speak to you personally. Trends run the gamut from moody hues to more natural, subdued tones for nails and lips, a range of skin finishes, individualist eye makeup and brow looks and easily achievable hairstyles. The season is about picking what works for you and owning it! We spoke with three experts—Grace Lee, Maybelline New York lead makeup artist for Canada; Jennifer Mather, business development manager for Creative Nail Design (CND); and Kirsten McIntosh, technical development specialist for Revlon Professional—to provide you a snapshot of what beauty trends you need to covet now. BRUN ET TE S WITH BABY LIG HTS Balayage is still in! This free-hand highlighting technique that gives a more natural sunkissed effect has been a trend for about five year now. “Risk takers take on trends right away, but the more conservative take them on later,” explains McIntosh. “People really want lighter hair, and the low-maintenance grownout look, or baby lights with balayage, is still strong in salons.” In terms of hair colours, the tones for fall are “darker shades of blonde— more caramel—and more deeper and darker tones of brown,”says McIntosh. Finally in terms of cuts, the lob is here to stay.

“GOING BACK INTO FALL AND COMING OUT OF SUMMER, BEING IN THE POOL, ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, PLUS ALL THE BLEACHING FROM GOING LIGHTER FOR SUMMER, WE ALL NEED TREATMENTS.” IF YOU DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME, MCINTOSH SAYS TO USE A TREATMENT OVERNIGHT AND RINSE IN THE MORNING. -KIRSTEN MCINTOSH

UN DONE & SE X Y LOCKS “We are wearing hair more messy and undone now,” says McIntosh. “Women are using dry shampoo, beach spray. We’re shampooing once a week, which is better for that undone look. The hair works better. So when it comes to products anything that mats out the hair and grits it up.” McIntosh also recommends a sulfate-free Shampoo and Conditioner to keep the natural oils in your hair.

TIPS OF PRET T Y G RUNG E “Nails are all about blackened pigments and a lot of ornaments and adornment,”says Mather. “Enhanced nails are sleek almonds in royal purples and oxidized red, smoky pearls and steel finishes. Short , softened nails look great in the oxblood colours. It’s a great palette reflective of gemstones with an ignited-by-sunset look,” says Mather. “This is reflected in the fall 2015 CND colour collection Contradictions for both Vinylux and Shellac, an exciting collection where couture turns defiance. There are structured classic looks and adornments with a twist. The colour collection really does span all ages and all demographics with trends of short to long nails, dark to light colours and metallic to cream finishes.” There is something for everyone. CND’s collection echoes fall runway clothing. “Fashion this season wields the body, and it’s a second skin with leather, suede and reptile textures. That’s why you see all the different textures and additives in the Shellac collection.”

When it comes to lip colour, there’s plenty to choose from. But Lee recommends to first try wearing a shade of dark Marsala. “Marsala is Pantone’s colour of the year, so you’re not going to go wrong with that. Even a wine or burgundy lip will work. Red is always a trend for fall, and the nude lip isn’t going anywhere either. That’s what I mean. You’ve got a very broad spectrum of colours to choose from.” For a more natural, muted lip as seen on several runways, apply your lipstick by patting it on with your fingertips. You get to manage the intensity of the colour and it actually stays on longer. The key to lip colour this season is to wear the one that resonates most with you at that specific moment in time.

Reboot your skin-care routine with Diego Dalla Palma’s RVB Skinlab. BY NICOLE LIPPAY

elevatemagazine.com

2015-08-18 2:30 PM

DURING THE HECTIC SUMMER months, our structured skin-care routine tends to lag. Combined with constant sun exposure, come fall, we definitely need a reset.

BOOK YOURSELF A FACIAL We go to the dentist for a thorough dental cleaning, so why not visit a professional for the same level of care when treating your skin? Jenny DeCicco, owner and director of Gina’s Spa in Waterloo, Ontario, explains: “Routine facials are highly recommended, as the skin’s condition changes with the seasons and with hormonal changes. It’s important to cleanse, exfoliate, treat and assess the skin’s changing needs regularly.”

RETRAINING YOUR SKIN As the skin becomes aggravated, it can act differently: Maybe it’s too dry, too oily, flaking, or too red. Using nanotechnology to penetrate to the dermal level, RVB Skinlab products specialize in cellular communication, retraining your skin to act as it’s meant to naturally. Each line targets a specific skin concern, from sensitive to oily to everything in between. Dr. Anna

FEEL GOOD

RVB Skinlab products are formulated without parabens, mineral oils, phthalates and triclosan, and Diego Dalla Palma does not use animal testing, so you can slather on the products guilt-free!

Mastropaolo, PhD, lead chemist for RVB Skinlab explains: “The signature 51+3 Hyalu Complex [present in all lines] stimulates the genes responsible for keeping the skin youthful, promoting collagen and elastin, reinforcing barrier function and preventing over-stimulation of melanin. On the surface, pore size, wrinkles and imperfections are reduced for smoother, brighter skin.”

GO THE COSMECEUTICAL ROUTE There’s large gap between the efficacy and results of a drugstore brand and a cosmeceutical line, and this comes down to research. Cosmescutical lines run multiple clinical trials before launching a new product, which can take years to develop. RVB stands for research, value and beauty. The name is reflective of the extremely high standards set by Diego Dalla Palma. The products are developed at the prestigious University of Pavia in Italy. As Dr. Mastropaolo explains, “This is the birthplace of research and development for many new active ingredients. They are being studied and proven to work, then launched within RVB Skinlab.” DiCicco sees consistently good results using the RVB Skinlab Sublime and Perfection facials ($110 to $120) with her clients: “The ultimate benefit of being a loyal RVB user and retailer is performance. I always have the appropriate treatment to address skin issues and can offer multiple treatment approaches to clients so that they’re not always receiving the same facial treatment every time.” Clients are able to take home 30-day treatment kits after their facial treatments, to maintain their spa service results. By committing to follow a specific skin-care routine with all RVB Skinlab products, clients will see dramatic reductions of telltale sings of aging.

THE TREND YOU AND YOUR DENTIST NEED TO KNOW

A new website called Zendo Direct AG (zendo-online.com) is making all of this new dentistry a reality and, as a result, a growing trend for patients and practitioners. Inspired by the Zen philosophy of simplicity and peace of mind, Dr. Barry Korzen, DDS, the former head and assistant dean of the University of Toronto’s endodontics, founded Zendo Direct AG in 2013 with the intention to simplify endodontics by making the tools and systems more accessible to general practitioners. His solution? Retailing quality European-crafted tools, instruments and root canal products online—all at a substantially reduced price. “The expenses that the dentist must incur to have his or her office function properly are reflected in the fees charged to the patient,” elevatemagazine.com

e-so15_enhance_dental.3-0R.indd 49

explains Dr. Korzen. “By harnessing the benefits of online shopping, we’re dramatically reducing the cost of doing business.”

HOW YOU’LL BENEFIT

Zendo Direct AG has also identified a technique that reduces the number of files—the special instruments specifically designed to maximize root canal efficiency with accuracy and safety—required to perform a root canal. Not only does this protocol have the ability to make the entire root canal process remarkably faster, maximizing the number of procedures dentists can do in a day’s work and helping patients get out of the chair faster, it can also be learned online. “For dentists, the ability to read about the benefits of a certain product and/or technique and then within seconds confirm the manufacturer’s claims by reviewing pertinent published research helps them make informed decisions to better serve their patients’ interests,” explains Dr. Korzen. “And it is the patient’s best interest that is at the heart of every decision that a dentist makes.”

WHY IT’S A WIN-WIN SITUATION FOR EVERYONE

While online retail isn’t exactly an earth-shattering innovation—e-commerce has been

popular since 1994, when heavyweight Amazon.com paved the cyberpath way— it is for the dental industry. Since inception, dentists have operated old-school style, placing orders for supplies through sales representatives. Yet, middleman costs can be expensive, and shopping digitally provides a much-needed, fresh perspective and “cost benefit for the dentist,” explains Dr. Korzen. Considering that the American Association of Endodontists reported more than 15 million root canals performed annually in 2014, shaving back sales costs leaves a whole lot of room for potential profits for practitioners, not to mention money- and time-saving benefits for patients. “Since retiring from both my practice and teaching, I have leveraged my contacts and years of experience to put together the best combination of products possible,” says Dr. Korzen, whose resources and clinical concepts can be accessed on the company’s website. “All of them have been designed and manufactured in Europe under strict quality control.” And this, coupled with the ability to research and pick and choose each tool personally, is what has practitioners reaching for their iPads. september + oc tober.15 | elevate

GROOM

GROOM,

From right-now hairstyles to the best way to care for his beard and skin, there’s a multitude of options to keep men looking their best. BY CATALINA MARGULIS

BEARD CARE 101

It would seem that growing out your hair and shaving less would mean less maintenance than staying clean-cut. Yet beards come with a host of skin-care concerns, not the least of which is ingrown hairs.“Ingrown hairs commonly occur in the beard area, particularly on the neck and in curly hair,” says dermatologist Dr. Gidon. “They are caused by hairs being shaved too closely. Skin grows over the hair follicle and, when the hair starts to grow, it tunnels under the skin.” Dr. Gidon recommends shaving with the grain of growing hair, not against it, to prevent a very close shave and avoid trapping the hairs. “Always use a clean, sharp blade with a shaving gel for sensitive skin. The five-track blade causes less stress on the skin than a single blade. Apply oilfree products, not greasy creams, after shaving,” Washing your beard will also help look after the skin beneath. “Dead surface skin will build up and clog the pores, which can cause acne,” says Dr. Gidon. “Washing well under the beard with a salicylic acid or glycolic acid cleanser will help exfoliate the skin and keep it clear.” When it comes to folliculitis, which Dr. Gidon explains is “an inflammation of the hair follicle usually caused by trauma and a bacterial infection,” the aforementioned tips will also help prevent it. In the case of affected areas, “A benzoyl peroxide wash or gel can help,” recommends Dr. Gidon.

I

have a confession to make: I love hairy men. This wasn’t always the case, and it is not without some discernment. But I’ve finally grown to love bearded looks, and a guy with a just-right shag up top can’t go wrong in my books. But don’t get me wrong: It’s not the without-a-care overgrown patch that turns me on, so much as the immaculately manicured looks. They say he’s not afraid to be a man but still cares about his appearance—and experts agree. “Beards require regular maintenance to keep them in shape,” says hairstylist Matty Conrad. “Your beard should enhance your jaw shape, which means the outline should be clean and squared.” Lucky for today’s guys, there’s a multitude of looks and tips to celebrate their manly assets. TH E V I E W U P H A I R “Men are still wearing classic barbered shapes this season, [but] we’re seeing a change in the styling, in favour of a little more texture and movement,” says Conrad, who points to “tapers, fades, sweepbacks, pompadours—anything with short sides, clean outlines, square shapes and part lines.” “One of the great things about the current [trend] towards classic haircuts is that they look great on men of any age,” he says. “Older gentlemen tend to wear it with a slightly more conservative finish; younger lads let it get a bit more wild.” To maintain good hair and scalp health, Conrad recommends using a good shampoo and conditioner: “Something that has a balanced pH and is good for daily use. I love shampoos that stimulate the blood flow or make my scalp tingle.” Having great hair isn’t just about a great cut, though. “Hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, is the main concern,” says dermatologist Dr. Martie Gidon, who adds that treatments range from Rogaine to hair transplants. “A healthy diet helps,” she says, noting in particular foods that are rich in

omega-3s, B-complex vitamins, zinc, protein, iron, biotin and selenium. As for dandruff, another common concern for men, “Medicated shampoos can help,” says Dr. Gidon, adding that prescription corticosteroid lotions may be required to control inflammation. And watch for buildup as well. “Don’t overdo hair care products, such as gels and waxes,” she says. FAC E TO FAC E “Beards may not be too popular on the runway these days, but they really dominate the mainstream,” says Conrad. As with all trends, though, one style doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. “A beard is always suited to the client’s face shape and beard density. It is not totally dependent on age,” says Conrad. “But a long beard can drag down the features slightly and make you look much older if you aren’t careful.” To keep your pelt more GQ, less Down and Out in Beverly Hills, grooming is key. “Regular beard trims and products like beard oils and balms help men keep their beards clean and conditioned,” says Conrad. “The outline should be clean and squared, and the cheek line should be nice and linear, from the bottom of the sideburn to the corner of the mouth. I suggest using an electric trimmer rather than a cartridge or safety razor.” And just as with washing the hair on your head, it’s important to keep your beard clean, too. “To wash the beard, I [recommend] something gentle and moisturizing. The hair on your face is much coarser than the hair that on your head, so it requires a lot of moisture,” says Conrad. “I suggest using a beard oil to condition and soften the hair and soothe the skin underneath.” Whether it’s on your head or across your face, wellgroomed hair has an allure worth taming.

NAME: Undisclosed PROCEDURE: Bilateral breast augmentation PERFORMED BY: Dr. Jerome Edelstein

ELEVATE: What made you decide to get this procedure done?

I did go through with it and, for once in my life, I did what was best for me.

PATIENT 1: I always had small breasts and wanted them to be bigger ever since I can remember. But I also wanted to breastfeed, so I waited until after I had my two children. I went from a deflated, misshapen, small size B to an amazing full-size C.

ELEVATE: Why did you decide on Dr. Edelstein?

ELEVATE: Did you have any reservations about the procedure before your consultation? PATIENT 1: At first I wasn’t sure I was making the right decision. I have a young daughter and didn’t want to send her the wrong message about her body as she was heading into her preteens. But I am very happy

PATIENT 1: It was a long, well thought out decision, that took me three years from the time I met with my first doctor. The best doctor for me was Dr. Edelstein because he was patient, kind and comforting. He was the only doctor to tell me I didn’t need a lift, which I questioned for so long. I’m glad I decided to go with him and took his advice to pass on the breast lift.

PATIENT 1: Recovery was harder than I thought, and for the first six months my chest was sore and tender. I couldn’t move my arms for days, and I couldn’t do anything myself for about a week. I’m very glad I gave myself four days without the kids to rest, with my husband home to help out.

ELEVATE: What did you experience during your procedure and recovery?

PATIENT 1: It has been a full year [since the surgery] and everything is great. I love them so much. ELEVATE: What advice do you have for people thinking of getting breast augmentation surgery? PATIENT 1: If you really want implants, you should get them. Do what makes you happy. Most of all, [make sure you] see a great doctor. Dr. Jerome Edelstein, in my opinion, is the best.

anaesthesiologist put me at ease from the beginning and answered all my questions.

PATIENT 2: I’d been contemplating my breast augmentation for about three years. I am into fitness and, with all my hard work, my breasts had disappeared. Throughout my weight fluctuation within those three years, no matter what weight I was, I never got my breasts back. I have always had a heavier lower half and felt self-conscious because I was disproportionate.

ELEVATE: Why did you decide on Dr. Weinberg?

PATIENT 2: After doing research on all GTA surgeons, I felt the most comfortable with Dr. Weinberg’s reviews and how long he had been practicing cosmetic surgery. When I went for my first consultation with him, he was very honest with me about the whole procedure and educated me on what size implants would be best for my body size and type. ELEVATE: What did you experience during your procedure and recovery? PATIENT 2: During my procedure, the entire cosmetic

surgery team helped me. They talked me through the procedure and put me at ease. During my recovery, I woke up with a nurse sitting right beside me. The first week, I experienced discomfort and needed assistance when it came to sitting up if I was lying down. Other than that, I found the recovery easier than I thought. By six weeks, I was back to my normal workouts. ELEVATE: How did you feel about your new look after the procedure? How did it impact your self-esteem?

PATIENT 2: I love my new look. I finally feel proportionate and confident in my physical appearance. I feel comfortable in a bikini and no longer wear a baggy cover top when I go to the beach. ELEVATE: What advice do you have for people thinking of getting breast augmentation surgery? PATIENT 2: It is honestly a life-changing procedure. I am now confident and comfortable with my physical appearance.

ASK THE DOCTOR Dr. Jerome Edelstein, MD, FRCSC Edelstein Cosmetic, edelsteincosmetic.com

ELEVATE: Why was this patient a good candidate for breast augmentation?

ELEVATE: What were the patient’s biggest concerns?

DR. EDELSTEIN: She had lost breast volume after having two children. She was also realistic about what we could achieve with the surgery.

DR. EDELSTEIN: Her deflated look after having children.

ELEVATE: What can patients expect during the procedure? DR. EDELSTEIN: The procedure takes approximately 1 1/2 hours and there is zero pain as the patient is completely asleep under general anaesthesia. There is some soreness after the surgery, but most patients feel it was less than they expected. If someone has a desk job, I recommend a week off work. If they have more of a physical job, they require two weeks off. For the first two weeks after the surgery, they wear a tensor bandage wrapped around their upper breast and chest, as well as a surgical bra. After two weeks, they continue recovery wearing a sports bra.

ELEVATE: What are some of the changes in breast augmentation surgery that you’ve noticed throughout your career?

DR. EDELSTEIN: The most common misconception is that the patient’s new breasts will look fake. In fact, 85 per cent of my patients want a natural, proportionate look.

DR. EDELSTEIN: There has been a big move away from saline implants to the modern silicone cohesive gel implants.

ELEVATE: What advice can you give patients who are unsure about getting breast augmentation surgery?

ELEVATE: What are some new techniques you’ve taken on that have improved the patient’s experience during and/or after breast augmentation surgery?

DR. EDELSTEIN: This is my most common procedure, and I see how happy it makes my patients. In fact, I call it my “happy surgery.” Combine this with the very low complication rate and I would say they should arrange a consultation, get informed and go for it!

DR. EDELSTEIN: One procedure is a bloodless breast augmentation. This use of instrumentation allows you to ensure there is no bleeding when the implants are put in to help reduce complications after breast augmentation surgery.

ASK THE DOCTOR Dr. Michael J. Weinberg, MD, FRCSC, Mississauga Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Clinic, mississaugacosmeticsurgeryclinic.com

ELEVATE: Why was this patient a good candidate for breast augmentation?

ELEVATE: What were the patient’s biggest concerns?

DR. WEINBERG: She was a good candidate because she had good and realistic expectations. She also had a good anatomy, which is ideal.

DR. WEINBERG: The patient wanted to look bigger, but natural. She was also concerned about long-term harm to her breasts.

ELEVATE: What can patients expect during the procedure?

ELEVATE: What are some of the changes in breast augmentation surgery that you’ve noticed throughout your career?

DR. WEINBERG: Surgery time is 1 1/2 hours. During recovery, the pain level is moderate and patients are usually back to work within seven days. Patients also need to wear a bandeau for the first six weeks after surgery.

54

ELEVATE: What are the misconceptions or common concerns people have about the surgery?

DR. WEINBERG: Vectra 3D imaging has been a sure change. We are also tending to go smaller in size to give the patient a more natural look.

ELEVATE: What are the misconceptions or common concerns people have about the surgery? DR. WEINBERG: Patients think they can choose to be any size they want. They aren’t aware that their breasts can’t just handle any size. We would discuss this during the consultation to ensure that the patient has realistic expectations about their desired size. ELEVATE: What advice can you give patients who are unsure about getting breast augmentation surgery? DR. WEINBERG: Wait until you are really ready.

IS FROWNING THE NEW SMILING? The facts behind why celebrities are hiding their smiles for the sake of saving face and fashion. BY HALEY HOFFMAN

s far as fashion is concerned, we’ve always looked to the runways, but we never expected celebrities to start picking up models’ fierce facial expressions instead of their fashion choices. Flashing a neutral expression in public and even in photos is becoming oddly trendy among Hollywood’s hottest, and now many celebrities flat out refuse to smile in social settings.

IN THE HOPES OF PRESERVING YOUTH The Kardashian clan is most notable for keeping this supposed anti-aging exercise on lockdown. Even Baby North seems to have perfected her paparazzi scowl. But it’s her multi-million-dollar mom who took to Instagram to explain her straight face. Kim Kardashian West captioned a photo of herself on Instagram smiling, stating: “See I do smile…even laugh on occasion. Not too often, though, because it causes wrinkles.” While this may be true, any sort of facial movement causes wrinkles over time, as the skin’s elasticity diminishes with age. The quick fix? “Facial wrinkles can be avoided by using Botox routinely,” says Dr. Philip Solomon, MD, FRCSC, an otolaryngologist head and neck surgeon in Toronto. Smiling causes wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, and unfortunately complete wrinkle prevention can’t be obtained by keeping a completely straight face. Botox is best suited to correcting crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eyes’ glabella region, where smiling is concerned. “A healthy lifestyle, avoidance of sun exposure and smoking, and sun protection are crucial to reducing wrinkles and maintaining healthy skin,” says Dr. Solomon. “Avoiding facial expressions is not realistic nor a healthy way to live.” THE HISTORY OF EXPRESSIONLESS PHOTOS There are many speculations behind holding a neutral expression that date further back than Kim’s latest selfie. In fact, it was her non-smiling husband, Kanye West, who found inspiration from 19th-century paintings and photographs. West told a news reporter from Highsnobiety that people didn’t smile in paintings seen in old castles because it didn’t look “cool.”

“HIDING YOUR SMILE LEADS TO A WHOLE SLEW OF NEGATIVE REACTIONS FOR THE PERSON EXPERIENCING THE SMILE,” SAYS DR. WEISS. “IT TAKES FAR LESS MUSCLE ACTION FOR A SMILE THAN FOR A FROWN.” Although many old paintings and photographs feature people with steely expressions rather than cheerful smiles, this isn’t because smiling was deemed uncool. Rather, posing for a portrait took immense amounts of time, and holding a smile for several hours at length just wasn’t plausible. Similarly, old cameras had such lengthy exposure times, which meant any movement caused a photograph to blur. As a result, subjects didn’t use expressions that couldn’t be held for minutes at a time. In today’s society, with digital photography and instant uploading, celebrities’ neutral expressions come off as indifferent or snobbish. “People are generally less likely to interact with people like that elevatemagazine.com

2015-08-19 4:53 PM

WHEN WE AVOID SMILING, WE ARE LESS LIKELY TO ACTIVATE NEURAL PATHWAYS AND REAP THE BENEFITS OF POSITIVE EMOTION. because your smile indicates how you are feeling,” says Dr. Sol Weiss, DMD, a cosmetic dentist for The Art of Dentistry in Toronto. We lose touch with celebrities who show up to events looking bored or better than their viewers. Many of us realize that this is some bizarre Hollywood trend, but we can only view so many photos before we start believing their lack of emotion. “Hiding your smile leads to a whole slew of negative reactions for the person experiencing the smile,” says Dr. Weiss. “It takes far less muscle action for a smile than for a frown.” And while we’ve all heard this age-old saying (Is it 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile now?), smiling conveys many more positive emotions that can be universally interpreted, whereas frowning can easily be attributed to harsher emotions misinterpreted because of the lack of emotion. FOR THE SAKE OF FASHION On today’s runways, keeping a neutral facial expression represents a higher status. While it keeps the main focus on the clothing, not the model, smiling is usually saved for attainable commercial fashion rather than intentionally unattainable high fashion. In an interview with Vogue, Victoria Beckham claimed she was smiling on the inside due to a sense of responsibility she felt to the fashion community. Although Beckham doesn’t look like she’s aged since her Posh Spice days, her lack of smiling does come with a cost that many like her fail to realize. UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES Whether for fashion or youthfulness, these trendsetters aren’t considering one thing, and that’s their happiness, explains Catherine Kamel, a psychologist for KMA Therapy in Toronto: “When we smile, we activate different parts of the brain and release “feel good” hormones and neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, dopamine and serotonin,” she says. When we avoid smiling, we are less likely to activate neural pathways and reap the benefits of positive emotion. In fact, we are more likely to deflate the experience because we aren’t allowing ourselves to express the emotion genuinely. “Avoiding emotional expression doesn’t change the fact that the emotion exists,” says Kamel. “If we’re preoccupied with what’s happening to our face, we can’t be fully present to experience and enjoy [the moment].” Whether they’re on the catwalk or in front of the camera, it seems celebrities are looking at all kinds of inspiration to maintain their young looks. But is the cost of a smile really worth the supposed anti-aging results? There’s no denying that age will eventually catch up to us all, so why not enjoy the time we’ve got with a smile. elevatemagazine.com

NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURES ORTHOTICS FOR BUNIONS AND OTHER FOOT PROBLEMS

ACHILLES NIGHT SPLINT

INGROWN TOENAIL CORRECTIONS

DESCRIPTION Although overpronation

DESCRIPTION The Achilles tendon, the

DESCRIPTION Ingrown toenails

longest tendon in the body that originates from the three muscles behind the knee and attaches to the back of the heel bone, can cause one severe heel pain and cramping when walking if shortened. (This often happens to women who wear heels all the time.) If the tendonitis is left long enough, the Achilles tendon can start pulling away at the bony heel insertion, causing a painful enlargement. The most effective treatment for this is the use of an Achilles night splint.

commonly occur on the sides of the big toes and can become very painful, red, swollen or infected. Podiatrists perform a minor in-office procedure when this is a recurring issue. The procedure eliminates the offending nail border to stop it from growing into the fleshy part of the toe.

primarily causes bunions, it can also lead to a host of other issues, like heel pain, shin splints and back pain if not corrected by the age of six. Treatment for children showing overpronation can include specific exercises, modifying shoes or prescription orthotics. Orthotics are custom-made insoles that are designed to improve the mechanics of the feet and are used to treat a variety of foot problems. If a podiatrist diagnoses a mechanical imbalance in the feet early enough, bunions can be treated with prescription orthotics and proper footwear, which can slow or stop the progression of the bunion and eliminate pain.

HOW IT’S DONE Your podiatrist will perform a biomechanical exam to observe your gait and check for any inconsistencies in how you walk, stand and position your feet. Sometimes they will do X-rays as well. Then they will take a mold of your feet or use a 3D computerized image scanner, which will be sent to the laboratory to fabricate the orthotics. They will also discuss proper footwear with you and book follow-up appointments to make sure the orthotics fit properly and do not wear out. Patients should be aware that podiatrists are best trained in biomechanics and orthotics; beware of prefabricated/nonprescription orthotics.

COMPLICATIONS Sometimes prescription orthotics need to be adjusted. These can be done immediately in the podiatrist’s office.

HOW IT’S DONE The Achilles night splint is worn by patients while they sleep to allow the muscle group in the calves to stretch over a number of weeks or months. This can also be combined with treatments such as laser, ultrasound, pulsed electromagnetic field or electrical stimulation. COMPLICATIONS None. RECOVERY Pain is alleviated in the long term when worn for many weeks as this stretches the tendon out. Generally, night splints are worn for weeks or months, depending if one must alternate between both feet. Healing is faster if just one foot is affected.

HOW IT’S DONE The border is removed by a special instrument called a nail splitter. The small offending nail matrix (root) is treated with a laser or chemical destructant. Since the entire nail is not removed, cosmetically it is almost impossible to notice that the procedure was performed.

COMPLICATIONS Infection. In a small percentage of cases, the affected nail area border can grow back. RECOVERY Little, if any, pain after the procedure and there is no need to be mindful of weightbearing exercise.

COST $500 for the first border and $100 for each additional border.

COST $200 to $400, depending on if the podiatrist includes any treatments, such as a laser. Most third-party insurance companies cover the cost of this treatment.

RECOVERY None. COST $450 to $650 per pair of orthotics. This price generally includes a biomechanical exam, any necessary X–rays, casting of the feet, adjustments and follow-up care. Many third-party insurance carriers will cover the prescription orthotics fee if prescribed by a podiatrist.

INVASIVE PROCEDURES HAMMERTOE CORRECTION

TRADITIONAL BUNION SURGERY

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY FOR BUNIONS

DESCRIPTION Often caused by bunions,

DESCRIPTION A bunion is a misalignment of the bones and tissue in the big toe joint. Alignment problems are generally brought on by what podiatrists refer to as overpronation, a hereditary imbalance in which the foot rolls in towards its arch and big toe and overstresses the area. In severe cases, bunions can be corrected with surgery. There are two types of surgical approaches: traditional hospital bunion surgery and minimally invasive office surgery (details for the latter, listed below).

DESCRIPTION Performed by a podiatrist, minimally invasive office surgery is a similar procedure to traditional bunion surgery but executed with a different set of instruments, that allow the podiatrist to work through two to three three-millimetre openings and do not usually require stitches. The surgery is performed under local freezing, avoiding the serious risks of general anaesthesia. Some podiatrists will insert a wire to hold the bone together while healing.

hammertoes are contracted and crooked second, third or fourth toes that bend upwards. If a bunion is the cause, hammertoes usually occur when a person’s big toe shifts towards and underlaps the smaller toes. Excessively long toes or second and third toes that are longer than the big toe (a condition common in women) can also cause the toes to buckle if shoes are not fitted properly. This will cause tendons to shorten, which can eventually lead to bony changes in the joints. Always make certain to fit shoes one thumb width from the longest toe (not necessarily the big toe) to the end of the shoe.

HOW IT’S DONE Performing a very quick, minimally invasive procedure and using local freezing, a podiatrist can release the tightened and contracted soft tissue and shorten and realign the crooked bone. Stitches or metal implants are rarely required. POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS Stiff and/ or shortened toes.

PHOTO: THINKSTOCK

RECOVERY Time off is not required, but you must wear a surgical shoe for one to three weeks. COST When done alongside bunion surgery, fixing hammertoes often involves a small additional cost. The hammertoe procedure alone costs approximately $800 to $1,500 per toe. Some podiatrists may not have extra fees for hammertoe correction when performed with bunion surgery.

elevatemagazine.com

e-so15_enhance_foot guide.3-0.indd 59

HOW IT’S DONE Traditional surgery is performed in a hospital by an orthopedic surgeon. The patient is put under general anaesthesia and a large incision is made so that the surgeon can remodel the bone. At times, a metal implement, such as a screw, staple or wire, is placed inside the foot to hold the bone. Reduced weightbearing exercise is required for many weeks.

COMPLICATIONS Possible complications can include risk of infection (as with any surgery) and side effects associated with general anaesthesia. Pain and swelling should be expected. Patients are often prescribed a narcotic, such as Tylenol with codeine or a Percodan, for pain management. RECOVERY Stitches are always required, and patients can expect to be casted for about eight weeks.

COMPLICATIONS As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. In some cases, the podiatrist will prescribe a course of antibiotics to avoid infection. There is a small risk of a decrease in big toe motion and delayed or non-healing of bone. RECOVERY After the short procedure, patients are bandaged and required to wear surgical shoes for about six weeks, but they are able to keep walking throughout the healing process. Since there is significantly less trauma, pain and swelling involved, patients can usually return to normal activities after 48 hours. If necessary, over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be taken to manage pain. Most patients can return to work within the first week following the procedure.

COST $3,500 to $5,000 per foot.

COST Traditional surgery for bunions is covered by provincial health insurance.

SOUL7

Enter a haven of alternative healing. BY AMANPREET DHAMI Driven by Bob Berman’s personal mission to heal others after the death of his wife, Soul 7 (soul7. ca) is an energy healing practice located in the heart of Yorkville that offers innovative European healing practices for people dealing with issues such as chronic pain, stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, stomach pain and cancer treatment. TREATMENT MODALITIES INCLUDE: • Guided audiovisual therapy that induces brainwaves that are conducive for pain alleviation. • Neuromuscular vibration therapy, which uses low frequency and amplitude mechanical stimulation to improve the strength and flexibility of the musculoskeletal system. Patients lie in a comfortable pod and listen to intra-corporal music that coordinates therapeutic vibrations with acoustic signals that are in turn sent to the nervous system, causing a reduction in stress. • Crystal healing therapy works out tension in the mind and body with the help of vibrations from specially cut quartz crystals and coloured light. • Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, which is used commonly in Europe and by NASA to keep astronauts healthy, balances the body’s electromagnetic energy to induce relaxation and other rejuvenating effects. Most practices that Berman offers are practised widely in Europe and allow patients to unlock their own natural ability to relax and heal from the inside without the use of drugs or invasive methods.

5 foods to include in your diet this fall

The availability of produce is never an issue given the ease of food exports. But when I think of the journey that a mango from Mexico takes to reach me here in Toronto in winter and the use of pesticides to make sure it’s still edible when I put it in my grocery cart, I think twice before buying it. After all, our bodies weren’t designed to eat every single vegetable and fruit on the face of this earth 365 days a year. By eating seasonally, you’ll eat fresher foods, support local farmers and

retailers and maintain a stronger immune system because of the reduced chance of contamination. By rotating your produce regularly (in addition to all of your foods), you are also less likely to develop food intolerances. Finally, you’ll sleep better at night knowing where your food came from and trust in the labour and farming practices they use. It’s a win-win for everyone. —AD

conscientious PUTTING A FACE ON

SKIN CARE

Stepping off bustling Queen Street West into the rustic and charming ambience of The Cure Apothecary, you’d think you entered an entirely different world. Nitasha Goel’s skin-care boutique is definitely inviting—and just the beginning of her story. BY NICOLE LIPPAY CREATING HER DIGS

HOMEGROWN PRODUCTS

“There was a need for a nice, organic, natural boutique that catered to men and women. I’m from the west end, and I didn’t feel like it was really complete.” This gender-neutral intention is clear throughout the boutique, where rich dark woods and clean lines are complemented by the soft scents of essential oils. “I was travelling in Mexico and I fell in love with the sands, white buildings and dark roofs—I knew that’s what I wanted the feel of the store to be,” explains Goel. Goel’s long-time friend and designer, Michael Madjus, helped her foster the branding: “We wanted to create something that was new but also familiar—something that was trustworthy and didn’t say ‘trendy new store,’” he explains.

Goel recently launched her own skin-care line, Dahlia & Sons. The core products are her Cuticle Oil ($24), Body Whip ($36) and Hand Soap ($20). She was striving for simplicity and efficacy: “In the body butter, there are four ingredients, plus essential oils. The cuticle oil can also double as a hand moisturizer. I’m really big on things being multipurpose—I want things to be functional.” This also helps encourage men to try some of the products. “[They] might not come in looking for a cuticle oil, but they might buy it to use as a moisturizer.” As far as anti-aging is concerned, well-nurtured skin always looks best. “Anything that’s hydrating will help with anti-aging. When you’re using good-quality ingredients, the product will automatically act as an anti-aging agent without necessarily being branded that way.” With rosehip oil and shea butter being two major ingredients in Dahlia & Sons, your skin will definitely feel supple and smooth.

GETTING OFF THE GROUND Goel’s background is in buying and selling fashion apparel, and she always knew she wanted to start her own business. After her parents brought her back skin-care products from New Zealand, Goel began to do her research. “I took my knowledge [from the fashion industry] and applied it to a skin-care boutique. I took the time to source brands that weren’t available in Toronto. That was my goal: newness.” The process took off quickly: “It’s the craziest thing—it just happened. It was just my time. If it were a struggle for me to do, I wouldn’t be as happy as I am. This just seemed to flow.” Seeing a need in the market for ethical, natural brands from Canada, New Zealand and the United States that weren’t yet available in Toronto was the perfect entry point into the beauty industry.

For Goel, when customers visit her boutique, it’s as though they become part of her personal story. “I’m really lucky in that there’s a lot of love that went into the store, and I think that customers can actually sense that,” she says. Her biggest obstacle is allowing herself to be critiqued: “This is me, this is my baby, this is my story, laid out on the table for everyone to judge, and that’s super-scary.” Seeing the way Goel fits into her surrounding community and makes the effort to appreciate and support her neighbours, her sincerity is palpable. Her advice to anyone with an entrepreneurial itch: “Have good support. I think I had a list of 20 people to ask for advice. You ask their opinions, and hope they’re telling you the truth!”

NITASHA IN A NUTSHELL Goel’s passion emanates from every aspect of The Cure Apothecary, from the shop’s decor down to each time she walks a customer through the various lines she carries. Knowing how to adapt to her surroundings and her openness to new opportunities contributed greatly to her success. “When developing the visual branding for The Cure Apothecary, we wanted something with longevity— something that would have lasting power. But we also wanted something that could evolve seamlessly as new products are introduced and additional facets of the company develop,” says Madjus. Just as much of her personality is injected into The Cure Apothecary, this positive, open-minded attitude is what makes Goel such a successful entrepreneur.

A PEACEFUL sojourn

5 things TO DO IN THE TOWNS OF ERIN AND ALTON, ONT.

Enjoy a serene and outdoorsy couples retreat in Toronto’s backyard at the Millcroft Inn & Spa BY AMANPREET DHAMI

W

hen you drive onto the peaceful, charming and gorgeously green grounds of the Millcroft Inn & Spa, you would never guess that you’re only an hour away from the urban centre of Toronto. Located in Alton, Ont., a small town in Caledon, the site of the Millcroft has been the main centre of the community since 1855. After surviving many natural disasters, rebuilds, renovations and owners, the Millcroft now flourishes as a lucrative “spa getaway that’s just a hop, skip and jump away in Toronto’s backyard,” says Heather Mackay, senior spa operations manager for the Millcroft. Now operated by Ontario’s Vintage Hotels, the Millcroft is proud of the beautiful haven it’s created, which provides a staycation feel for couples, women travelling with friends and corporate groups on team-building retreats.

1. ENJOY THE ARTS Visit the Alton Mill Arts Centre (altonmill.ca), which displays the work of more than 20 artists, some of which feature working studios and interactive workshops.

2. EAT WELL Frequent one of the many local restaurants and eateries that source local produce and delicious cuisine. 3. SHOP TILL YOU DROP From fashion to arts, the boutiques in the Village of Erin will tempt you to buy a memento to help remember your stay. 4. CATCH A FESTIVAL Enjoy local festivals, including the Feast of Hops in September and Erin Fall Fair's 165th anniversary this Thanksgiving. Visit villageoferin.com for more information. 5. GIDDY UP! The Village of Erin is home to a

world-class equestrian jumping show and local horse farms that provide riding lessons to visitors. Visit headwatershorsecountry.ca for details.

HISTORY, SUSTAINABILITY AND TONS TO DO My stay at the Millcroft with my husband, Raj, was a complete wellness retreat packed with the right amount of relaxation, physical activity and nourishment. Unlike most spas, the Millcroft is situated on 100 acres of preserved meadow, providing a peaceful and secluded setting that lets you unplug completely and enjoy nature alongside luxurious pampering and delicious cuisine. We were lucky enough to be booked into the largest guest room on the top floor of the Victorian-style Manor House, which was built in 1883 and has a walkout balcony where we ate our breakfast on our final morning on the property. Although the room features renovated decor, the oldtime charm of the house remains because of preserved structures and antiques throughout the home and hallways. The home is rich in history, as it was the original family residence of the Dods, the family that owned

66

and ran the Main Mill in the 1800s. The Main Mill, where guests check in, has 32 guest rooms on the upper floors. Finally, the Crofts are a series of rustic but contemporary bi-level guest rooms that were added in the ’70s that feature heated floors, a sitting area on ground level, a private deck and a hot tub. Depending on if you prefer a country-inn feel or something more modern, you can book a room that suits your needs. All rooms are within walking distance of the amazing spa amenities, the Conference Centre, the restaurant, the games room, indoor and outdoor pools and the rest of the grounds, which feature hiking trails that turn into skiing and snowshoeing trails in winter. “Guests come and spend time here,” says Mackay. “It’s not just the spa on its own.” Other activities offered on site include biking, skating, volleyball and bocce tournaments and bonfires, when the weather and season permits. You simply can’t get bored here. elevatemagazine.com

A BEAUTIFUL COUPLES SPA EXPERIENCE Since the resort caters mostly to couples, my husband and I—who are frequent spagoers—were ecstatic to try out some of the signature treatments unique to the Millcroft. We were also keen to indulge in all the spa amenities, which include a steam room, an indoor pool and a relaxing waiting room complete with comfy couches, a fireplace, reading materials, complimentary herbal teas, homemade granola and fruit-infused waters. Mackay brings more than 20 years of experience in the spa industry to her role as spa manager, in which she works to develop the spa treatment menu and provide guests with memorable experiences. “At the Millcroft, our philosophy is beauty through health and wellness,” she explains. This is evident in the mix of both traditional and trendy spa treatments offered on the menu. Two signature treatments that the Millcroft specializes in are the Japanese Ofuro Treatments and the Swiss Shower Treatment Kurs. Naturally, I tried the deluxe Japanese Ofuro because I adore baths, while the hubs, who is a bit more of a risk taker, indulged in the Swiss Shower Kurs. The Ofuro allows you to experience the traditional Japanese bathing ritual, which includes a rich exfoliation and a luxurious soak in a steamy round tub infused with essential oils. The experience is the definition of ultimate bliss, as the deluxe version of the treatment is followed by an 80-minute full-body massage to work out any kinks you have left. Couples who want more than just a side-by-side

pedicure or a traditional massage often book this treatment. For the Swiss Shower Kurs, which involves the Swiss showerhead and the Blitz Gus hose (also known as the Scotch Hose), a therapist delivers aggressive blasts of water using varying temperatures of water and intensities to encourage lymphatic drainage and promote detoxification and circulation in the body. The Millcroft is proud to be one of the only spas in Ontario to offer this innovative treatment. The treatment was a hit with my husband, who felt completely stressfree after the water treatment, full-body exfoliation and a detoxifying clay body wrap. Following our treatments, the two of us lounged around in the pool, went for a swim and enjoyed the hot tub, riding out the wave of relaxation and happiness. FIVE STAR DINING AT HEADWATER’S RESTAURANT

BABOR skin care

Located in the Main Mill, Headwaters Restaurant serves refined rustic French cuisine. “Our food is locally and seasonally sourced as much as possible,” says executive chef James Buder, who puts a modern spin on classic dishes using the finest ingredients to create clean and mouth-watering flavours. His motto: “You cook from your soul—happy food, happy soul.” My personal favourite from the dinner menu: the Bison Rib appetizer, a healthy serving of tender bison cooked in the Millcroft’s own barbecue sauce, served on basil polenta with cabbage slaw and barbecue jus and topped with a scrumptious onion ring.

Babor is a German skin-care brand developed in the 1950s that is used in many of the body treatments and facials offered at the Millcroft Spa. The brand is infamous for its signature Fluids, highly concentrated active ingredients sealed in wafer-thin glass ampoules. Babor’s manufacturing facilities in Europe produce a total of 360,000 ampoules a day, due to their high demand. The Babor Spa collection is used for the body treatments and features four different types that you can choose from through the advice of your spa practitioner: Shaping for Body, Energizing Lime Mandarin, Relaxing Lavender Mint and Balancing Cashmere Wood.

NEW additions FOR AN EVEN BETTER MILLCROFT If you’re lucky enough to make a trip to the Millcroft this fall, you’ll get to enjoy two amazing new features that take the already-perfect Millcroft experience to a whole new level.

EXPERT

GUIDE CREDENTIALS Medical abbreviated credentials following a doctor’s name are a common sight, but what exactly do these letters mean? The following list explains common credentials in the cosmetic surgery field. Don’t hesitate to ask surgeons about their qualifications—a professional should always be willing to discuss his or her training and certification with you. MD Medical doctor. Be sure to verify with a licensing body, such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, to make sure your MD has, in fact, specialized in plastic surgery. FRCSC Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. After receiving their MD, doctors complete a five-year residency program to be certified as a plastic surgeon. Legally, a doctor must always add the specialty in which certification was obtained (that is, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, etc). FRCPC Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. The certification process is the same for FRCPC as for FRCSC but, instead of choosing a surgical specialty, these doctors focus on a medical specialty, such as a dermatologist who uses drugs and medication to treat patients. FACS Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Canadian fellows must pass an evaluation of their education, training and surgical competence. BOARD CERTIFIED In Canada, the only board is The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. In the United States, it could be one of a number of organizations, such as the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) or the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). To get certified, an applicant is subject to peer review and must take exams.

e.so.15.expertguide.3-1.indd 79

CONTACT THE MEDICAL DOCTORS FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE! FELLOWS This designates someone who has been certified as an FRCSC or an FRCPC. It’s also used to designate membership in an academic society, something each surgical and medical specialty usually has. To check on the specialty of a doctor, verify certification or for more information, please use the following contac t s: The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, 1-800 - 668-3740, rcpsc. medical.org; The Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 905-8317750, csaps.ca; The Canadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 905-569-6965, www.cafprs.com; The American College of Surgeons, 312-202-5000, facs.org. DENTAL Any dentist can do aesthetic work, but cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty in Canada. However, a general dentist will have areas of expertise or will refer you to a specialist (that is, an orthodontist, periodontist, etc). Depending on where they’ve trained in North America, dentists either receive a DDS (doctor of dental surgery) or DMD (doctor of medical dentistry). In addition to general dentistry, they can perform oral surgery, give injections and provide medication. Dental training emphasizes diagnosis, oral medicine, disease prevention and the promotion of dental health. Cosmetic work (crowns, veneers and implants) is also part of their training. Since cosmetic dentistry isn’t a recognized procedure, how do these dentists train? Most focus on the area for which they have an aptitude, and there are dozens of courses from which they can choose. Continuing education departments in many dental schools offer ongoing seminars and workshops, or sometimes dentists choose to join professional associations that promote learning opportunities. To choose the right dentist for your needs, consult your regular dentist or get a referral from friends, family or colleagues. Once you have a dentist in mind, ask for before-andafter photos and have questions ready. This will help you and your dentist determine the best approach. To verify a dentist’s certification or for more information, please use the following contacts:

BY AMANPREET DHAMI

Rich in antioxidants, proteins, minerals and vitamins, bamboo is found in many skin care creams and tonics for its firming, soothing and astringent effects. As a raw material, bamboo is also sourced for product packaging and as a fashion textile because of its sustainability.

Bamboo contains silica, an ingredient used in the Marc Anthony Volumzing Collagen Bamboo hair line, which conditions and brings vitality to hair. Hair retains moisture without being weighed down and looks smooth and shiny.
