Kaisa Syväoja, Salolampi Foundation’s new president.

Kaisa began as a Salolampi villager at age seven and fell in love with the magical place that we have all come to adore. She has been a staff member, worked with Concordia Language Villages in various capacities, and served on the Salolampi Foundation for many years. Kaisa spent a year in Finland at the University of Tampere while completing her undergraduate degree. She currently lives with her family in Bemidji, Minnesota, where she works as an Occupational Therapist. She enjoys speaking Finnish with her family at home, volunteering, and spending time outdoors. A message from Kaisa… Salolampi is a unique place that welcomes an ever-growing number of villagers to its programming each year. This is an exciting time for the Salolampi Foundation as well, as we look at meeting the scholarship needs of the Village, and as we grow and transition as a Board. However, we can’t do what we do without you—the parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who choose to send or have sent their young villagers each year; and the adults who decide to learn the language of their parents or grandparents to know what was said when they were children. We can’t do what we do without your answering the phone and saying “YES!” during our Annual Scholarship Appeal or remembering Salolampi in your planning for the future. This is a unique place; and, as President, my hope is that we will be able to provide the support that Salolampi needs to continue to inspire young lovers and explorers of Finnish for many years to come. Paljon kiitoksia.

Future Transitions by John Jussi Hanson, Past Salolampi Foundation President

In 2019, we celebrate the addition of a new a student intern, Izabella Usitalo, to assist the Foundation Board. The Foundation is also looking at new ways of raising funds to support the growth in scholarships. We are transitioning to new methods of communication, public relations, and administrative support.

In addition, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to add their skills, talents, and abilities to meet our needs during these transitions. We need volunteers who have experience in database management, internet communications, mail processing, accounting and treasury management, fundraising, letter writing, or just an enthusiasm to help. To join in, please respond in the enclosed envelope. Kiitos paljon!

Spring 2019 Adult Week – a full week of activities Our Spring 2019 Adult Week, May 18–24, was another fun week full of excellent language instruction, interesting cultural presentations, and creative crafts, games, and activities—not to mention sauna every night and lots and lots of delicious Finnish food. Here are our teachers as of the Sanomat press date (there may have been one more, depending on enrollment): Jen Pulju Porter from Colorado, who recently lived in Finland with her family for a year and who often works at Salolampi during the summer in various capacities; Sirpa Tuomainen from California, who recently retired from teaching Finnish at UC Berkeley, and has taught at Stanford and Sisu Seminar in Duluth; Tiina Watts from Utah, Adult Week director and teacher since 2003. Here are the highlights of our schedule for the week:

May 19 – Saxophonist and vocalist Juli Wood (Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year) and Paul Silbergleit, guitarist, played jazzy Finnish folk tunes.

SALOLAMPI HERITAGE SOCIETY

May 20 – Eleanor Ostman (former food editor for the St. Paul Pioneer Press) and Soile Anderson (caterer and Finnish chef ) presented a cooking demonstration and talked about their new cookbook, Celebrations to Remember. May 21 – Arlene Putikka Tucker and her mom Anni Korpi, discussed their new book about Anni’s life. In the evening, was a presentation from Ed Watts on linguistic similarities and differences between Finnish and other languages. May 22 – Susan Harstad led some birch bark craft and weaving activities and a presentation on Finnish art. Also on this day, was a mölkky tournament run by the US Mölkky Association. And last but not least, in the evening, we had a special celebration and memorial in honor of our good friend, former Salolampi dean and Salolampi Foundation board member, Lauri Saukko. May 23 was our program and banquet; and on May 24 we said näkemiin. The Fall 2019 Adult Week is September 7–13. Visit salolampi.org to see all of the available Adult Week scholarships. Contact Tiina Watts at tiiwatts@gmail.com or 763-245-6048 if you have questions.

Spring 2019

Larry Lauri Saukko

Linguist, Musician, Culinary Artist, and Renaissance Man Lauri is fondly remembered with sadness in the hearts of colleagues, villagers, and the hundreds who met and worked with him at Salolampi and Concordia Language Villages. On November 18, 2018, he passed away in Duluth, having contributed to the Language Villages programs at Salolampi and Waldsee. He possessed immeasurable gifts of music, language, culture, and culinary arts, and freely shared them with all. Wit and humor kept listeners on their toes. He was a Renaissance man, with a home-built sauna on a trailer for good measure. Lauri was raised on the Iron Range, joined Waldsee, the German village, as the first-ever credit program staff, co-led the German abroad program, was a business manager and later the dean of the Waldsee academic programs. For 26 years, he was Dean of Salolampi (1986–2011) and presided during the development of the facility as it is today. He finished his CLV career as Assistant Food Service Manager. The outdoor pavilion at Salolampi bears his name and marks his 25 years on staff. It is hard to describe Lauri. He embodied charisma and wit; sternness and kindness; and enthusiasm for Salolampi. His very positive contributions to Finnish-America drew praise and admiration. He wrote various articles for the Finnish American Reporter newspaper that were captured in three volumes of Opi (Learn) as a compilation of definitions and explanations of Finnish words and phrases. Lauri also contributed in many ways to Finnish music in North America and was proficient in playing several instruments. Lauri’s spirit lives in the lives he touched. He represented the best a citizen can offer—peace, joy, and laughter—for many persons, young and old. We are deeply grateful to this steadfast friend of Finland.

SALOLAMPI VILLAGE is located at 10915 Ojutkangastie NE, Bemidji, MN 56601, northeast of Bemidji, Minnesota, on Turtle River Lake, County Hwy 20.

PLEASE READ! Transformation occurs all around us, and the Salolampi Foundation needs to keep up with the pace of change. We are developing new strategies to engage communication and develop a balance of contemporary and traditional ways of communication. During this transition, we are searching out reasonable efforts to reduce the cost of publishing, printing, and distributing the Sanomat. The Sanomat Editorial Committee suggests: • Converting more readers to electronic and emailed Sanomats. We ask readers to opt out of the paper Sanomat and request an email version by providing an email address. (See the enclosed envelope for an opt-out message.) • In the future, we encourage parents, villagers, scholarship recipients, and new friends to request electronic or email versions of the Sanomat. We ask readers to assist us as we make this transition. Paljon kiitoksia!
