Did you know that the Department of Labor (DOL) has been working with NAR to include REALTORS® and their spouses in the Association Health Plan (AHP)? As part of efforts to address the health insurance needs of members, NAR has advocated for reform of the health insurance markets that provide coverage to the self-employed and small employers since the health care reform debates of the mid-nineties. Many steps have been taken for the DOL to change the verbiage in the current policy. Recently the DOL expanded the definition of “employer” to “working owners”. That’s a huge step in the right direction because it opens the door to real estate professionals and other self-employed workers/members to participate in association health plans. NAR has been a longtime advocate to expand AHP eligibility to independent contractors. It does not mean that Realtors® will be able to buy coverage in the near future. There are still Legal and other challenges that might delay these changes, but NAR has been working hard on our behalf. If you would like additional information check out NAR’s HEALTH CARE REFORM topic page.
