Age: Grades K-5 Date: Tuesdays, Feb. 26, March 5, 12, 18, 25 Time: 6 to 7 p.m. Fee: $7 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Volunteer Steve Dibble has taught and supervised chess for more than 1,000 children over the past 20 years. Participants will become skilled at playing the oldest game in the world against new friends in a fun, relaxed setting. No knowledge of chess is needed and children of all abilities are invited. Many of these children go on to play well in Salem’s Annual Chess Tournament, held on Saturday, March 31.


Age: Grades K-5 Date: Saturday, March 30 Time: 9 a.m. Fee: Free Place: Winter Island Function Hall Volunteer Tournament Director Steve Dibble will host this double-elimination tournament in a low-pressure way, teaching good sportsmanship. Trophies will be awarded to the top four players. The tournament is exclusively for Salem residents. This event will determine the 2012 City of Salem Youth Chess Champion. Pre-registration is encouraged.


Age: 6-12 years Date: Thursdays, Oct. 4 to 25 Time: 6-7 p.m. Fee: $35 Place: Salem Willows tennis courts Learn the elements of the tennis court and how to keep score. Lessons will focus on the proper way to serve and hit, as well as all strokes. Instructor: Andrew Fritz

Parents are asked to sign their children in at drop-off and sign them out upon pickup. If Salem schools are dismissed early or closed due to snow, the program will be canceled for that night.
