GM Corner Dear Club Members: It is my pleasure to address you today and provide an update on the Ocean Course and golf in general. Now in my seventh week as your Managing Director I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, hear interesting stories and quite a few recommendations. To say the least I am overwhelmed with the support I have received so far and I am glad we are working together towards a bright future. To start, let’s talk about the Ocean Course. For the most part, all 18 holes were affected by Hurricane Matthew. The wind, rain, and storm surge were strong enough to destroy most of the fairways and bunkers, along with over five hundred trees. The irrigation satellite controllers have now been completely replaced, as all were submerged under saltwater; as of last week, we began rinsing the turf and soil while applying a chemical base that will assist in reducing the sodium content. This process could take up to six more weeks and must be completed to provide conditions for turf survival and health and is a prerequisite to reconstruction of the course. Now this is where the big picture comes in. Do we conduct minimal and contingent work to put the course back together so that it can be returned to play as quickly as possible? For us the answer is no. Based on thorough consideration by the ownership team, relying upon expert analysis and recommendations, we have begun preparation for a complete course renovation. This strategy has been set forth to insure the long-term success of the Ocean Course, viability and strength of the turf and course conditions, while mitigating future impact and damage experienced by events outside of our control, such as Hurricane Matthew. Renovation will include replacing all the fairways, tees, greens and roughs with Paspalum Platinum, reconstruction of all bunkers, tee boxes and greens to assure that the Ocean Course remains one of the finest Jack Nicklaus Signature courses in all of Florida. In combination, the scope of the renovation will provide our Club membership with one of the best golf courses on the East Coast, restoring Hammock Beach as an elite golf Club. The immediate implementation of this full-scale renovation should position the Club to reopen the course to play in October 2017. Based on conversations I have had with many members, I believe this is the course of action that is in the best interest of our membership. At the most recent Members Managers event, I introduced a fee reduction for full golf members in consideration of the hurricane damage to the Ocean Course. I am pleased to extend a membership dues reduction effective November 2016 and through the opening of the Ocean Course as follows:

• Monthly Full Golf membership dues will be reduced by $250 + tax per month

• Monthly Patron Golf membership dues will be reduced by $125 + tax per month. Patron Golf Memberships are Full Golf Members participating in our Hammock Beach Rental Program.

The state of the Watson Course at the Conservatory is good. As most of you know, the course itself faired relatively well with limited damage to report other than downed trees, and impact to some bunkers and the comfort stations. This has allowed us to continue offering championship signature golf to our members and guests. Each day our Director of Golf, Brad Hauer, and our golf team is working to provide the best golf experience at the Watson Course while accommodating increased levels of play. Inside the Conservatory Clubhouse, we experienced water intrusion which requires remediation and restoration work; this effort is in progress now and should be completed by mid-December. For the convenience of our members, we have opened the Conservatory restaurant seven days a week from 11:00am to 6:00pm and will soon be open for dinner on Friday’s and Saturday. It is my hope that you will enjoy this new experience, and your support of the new dining program will allow us to continue to offer this service. In the coming weeks, and until the Club is completely restored to pre-Hurricane conditions, I will provide you with continuing updates regarding the status of other Hurricane impacted amenities, which includes the Lodge, Spa, Delfinos, Loggerheads, Yacht Harbor, etc. My team is actively evaluating creative ways to reach and engage our membership with fresh and fun programming and events during this period of reconstruction. In closing I wish to thank everyone for the support you have given to the Club as we work to bring back all the amenities. It has been a tough challenge and we are confident that once this is behind us we will offer a superior golf experience at the Ocean Course for years to come. I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Happy Holidays, Terry G. Bechtold Managing Director 2

Advisory Board of Governors Update, by President Bob VanNostrand Well another year has come and gone and our elections are finally behind us, and the same is true for the Advisory Board of Governors. We had a record 11 candidates for the 2017 ABOG election and voting ended on Tuesday November 15. I want to thank all that volunteered to run, and especially the 187 members who voted – almost 100% more than voted in our last ABOG election. I think the use of Survey Monkey instead of paper ballots was a major factor. The newly elected 2017 ABOG members are (alphabetically): Les Davis

Kathy Hodges Mary Ann Maurer Robin Rosenberg

Judy Jack Sue Sedlak

In addition to the above, we had an ABOG resignation in late 2016 which left a vacancy of one year. Pursuant to our Bylaws, as President I decided to nominate the candidate from the recent election that received the 7th highest vote total and after a majority of the 2016 ABOG voted, I am pleased to add Joe Roy to the 2017 ABOG. Joe is being appointed for 2017 and will be eligible to run for re-election in 2018 for a full two-year term. Joining these 7 are returning ABOG members Paul Propis, Bernie Barczak, Diana Kaiser , Carey Smith and myself. At the December ABOG meeting the 2017 Board will vote for a President and Vice President for next year – and the new President will start work on appointing Committee Chairs and then filling the ABOG Committee members. Volunteers for the ABOG Committees should expect to hear back around the first of the year. I look forward to passing the ABOG Presidency to someone else – and want to thank all the membership for their input and support the last two years.

7th Annual Member Homecoming Weekend Homecoming Weekend 2016 was a resounding success, providing members with a memorable weekend and a great variety of events. As hoped for, the weekend encouraged more non-residents to come “home and enjoy the Club. Almost 30% of the members participating were non-resident members. From the Friday night Kick Off Party featuring The Unexpected Boys from New Jersey to the Saturday tennis events where members participated in drills and match play with four former touring tennis professionals. Saturday afternoon The Holiday Gift Show and Sale gave some of our very talented members the opportunity to showcase their artistic and creative talents. Saturday ended with a Homecoming Mixer presenting Trial By Fire, a Journey Tribute Band Concert, with much camaraderie and dancing. The weekend ended on Sunday with a Member 9 Hole Golf Scramble at the Conservatory - all events were designed with the member in mind. If you attended, thank you for participating. If you missed it, be sure to plan for next year!

Perfect your Toss for a Better Tennis Serve By Katsiaryna Lukomskaya, Head Tennis Professional Most of the time, players that struggle with the consistency of the serve often have issues with their tennis serve toss. Nothing is more discouraging on the tennis court than a tennis serve toss that seems to constantly betray you. Here are the key points to focus on when practicing your toss. First and foremost, pay close attention to ball positioning in your hand. It should be placed at the fingertips of your tossing hand. To help you understand how much pressure to apply to the ball while holding it think of holding an egg. Gently extend your tossing arm upwards keeping your elbow and wrist straight. You should release the ball at eye level as your arm is held straight out in front of you. The tough part is figuring out how high you have to toss the ball. The perfect toss will allow your hitting arm to be fully extended at contact point. Practice altering the height of your toss to find the one that feels comfortable and allows you to get maximum reach at contact point. There are slight alterations in tossing arm positions based on the type of serve being performed (flat, slice, kick, or topspin). Try mastering the most basic serve where the ball toss lands in front of your forward leg. As you are now thinking of your straight arm and soft release at eye level, it is important to remind you that you should be watching the ball at all times. Don’t try to take a peek at your opponent or at the court while you are tossing, as that will result in losing focus on the ball. Your eyes should be on the ball until contact occurs. Lastly, every toss you make should be automatic, that being said you will have to hit a good amount of serves to make the toss consistent and your service motion as smooth as it can be. Always remember, serve is the only shot in tennis where you are in charge of how the ball is being fed to you, so put some time into practicing it to make it your weapon.
