HOW TO SPOT THE SIGNS OF SAD BEFORE WINTER STEALS YOUR SPARK
I used to think winter just wasn’t “my season.” I’d get sluggish, gloomy, anxious for no reason. I’d stop reaching out to friends. My motivation vanished. Every year it was the same… and I never made the connection.
The truth is: winter has a way of amplifying everything – especially what's already under the surface. Emotional fatigue. Isolation. Trauma that hasn’t been processed. The pressure to stay cheerful while everything inside feels flat or low.
It wasn’t until someone mentioned Seasonal Affective Disorder – or SAD – that things finally clicked.
I’d always chalked it up to “low mood” or “winter blues,” but SAD is more than that. It’s a biological and emotional response to light deprivation, circadian disruption, and the stress of shorter, colder days. And if you don’t catch it early, it can quietly spiral into something that’s hard to pull yourself out of.
That’s why now is the perfect time to get ahead of it.
WHAT IS S.A.D.?
Seasonal Affective Disorder affects millions of people every year – though many go undiagnosed. It tends to show up as low energy, irritability, increased sleep, low mood, poor focus, and a kind of invisible heaviness that doesn’t lift with the usual pick-me-ups.
IS IT NORMAL TO FEEL LIKE THIS?
Yes – and no. It’s common, but it’s not something you have to just accept. Some people even carry the belief: “I get SAD every year.” But what if this year could be different?
4 SIMPLE WAYS TO DODGE THE WINTER SPIRAL TAKE VITAMIN D
Start now – it takes time to build up. Herbies on Albert Road stock good-quality options.
LIMIT BRIGHT SCREENS AFTER DARK
Instead, try reading by candlelight or a soft amber bulb 30 minutes before bed.
GO OUTSIDE FIRST THING
Even if it’s grey, step out barefoot onto grass or earth and look at the sky. Natural light still works wonders for your system.
MOVE YOUR BODY
Whether it’s a long daily walk or three short ones, consistent movement stabilises mood and sleep.
These habits might seem small, but the results are remarkable – especially when started early.
BEYOND THE SURFACE: BREATH, TRAUMA, AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
If you’ve struggled with SAD or low mood in winter, there’s often a deeper pattern playing out – unprocessed stress, old grief, or a nervous system stuck in survival mode.
This is where connected breathwork and holistic support come in. In a calm, safe space, you can gently release anxiety, recalibrate your system, and learn daily practices that support real resilience.
Let’s help you feel better before the darkest day hits.
SECURING YOUR LEGACY WITH A LIFETIME TRUST
Navigating the uncertainties of life can be challenging both for you and your loved ones, but securing the future of your loved ones need not be. With a Lifetime Trust you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your assets have been safeguarded and will benefit your chosen loved ones exactly as you intend.
Many still believe that Lifetime Trusts are only for the wealthy, but this is no longer the case with ordinary folk now owning their homes and looking to protect their assets. Westminster Law has made Lifetime Trusts an affordable and practical solution and has made it possible for anyone to secure their family's future with the same protection and foresight that the wealthy have enjoyed for centuries.
WHY CHOOSE A LIFETIME TRUST?
• Avoid the cost and delays of probate: Grant immediate access on your death to some or all of your assets held in trust without the need for probate.
• Control and protection: Claim full control over your assets and shield your family’s inheritance from divorce, creditors, and other predatory challenges.
• Ensure future care of your beneficiaries: Guarantee that the trust capital can assist your loved ones for generations; for example, for education, health care, and first homes.
• Retain more of your wealth: Strategically reduce or even eliminate potential inheritance tax liabilities for yourself and future generations.
Many believe setting up a trust means losing control; however, the reality is quite the opposite. With the right planning, a Lifetime Trust allows you to maintain full control over your assets both during your lifetime and after death. A Lifetime Trust ensures that your wishes regarding your assets are meticulously realised with precision and care.
By setting up a Lifetime Trust you can preserve your legacy, ensuring your intentions are fulfilled not just for the present, but also for future generations.
Westminster Law assesses the circumstances of couples and individuals and arranges the Trust that will provide the best protection for them, their loved ones and their assets
Another year of new beginnings, community and family
Southsea’s
the place
By Lizzie Burt Associate Director at Chinneck Shaw
It’s that time again! Halloween passed in the blink of an eye, Christmas is upon us and the year is drawing to a close.
Whether your festive season will be packed with activity or you’re looking forward to some quiet time with loved ones, we hope it’s fulfilling. Southsea is the perfect place for both – hopping between warming cafes, exploring the D-Day museum, strolling along the seafront, visiting Southsea Castle or wandering through our uniquely independent shops.
At Chinneck Shaw, we’ve seen so many people choose to grow their family here this year.
We’ve helped people move in with partners, downsize for retirement, find a garden for furry friends, secure that extra bedroom for new additions, or simply start a chapter for themselves.
Southsea has been the place for them all.
We’ve also been out on more viewings than ever, and – of course – we’ve launched our Street of the Week series on Instagram!
None of this would have been possible without our extended family of wonderful small businesses and friendly residents that make up the Southsea community.
It would be remiss of us not to share a couple of stunning new properties too... just to kick off 2026 as we mean to go on!
Eldon Street, PO5
A stylish three-bedroom home to rent in one of Southsea’s most desirable locations –perfect for a couple, working professionals or a small family.
Campbell Road, PO5
A spacious five-bedroom house close to countless shops, cafes, bars and restaurants with a beautifully landscaped rear garden for all the family to enjoy.
From everyone at Chinneck Shaw, we want to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support this past year. We love being a Southsea business!

KEEEEEP READING!
Shelagh Moore
Reading to our children is one of the best ways to support their learning journey. Snuggling up with a baby, showing them pictures, and talking about them is a wonderful way to begin. Little hands hitting the page as they explore the images they start to recognise and understand is a joyful experience for the adult helper as well. Our little person is beginning a path that can last a lifetime.
When little ones can move around and realise that a book gets them on their knee, they will present you with a favourite and enjoy looking at it with you. You will be shown the dog, cat, butterfly as they look at the pages of a much loved book. ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ was a family favourite in our house. They learnt the days of the week as well as a variety of food that the caterpillar ate before it finally turned into a beautiful butterfly!
Our triplet grandchildren used to bring us books when we sat on the settee at their house. Mind, they were quite savvy at choosing their favourite reader –their Grandpa – as he could do the funny voices that went with the characters.
Reading together, especially at bedtime, becomes a cherished part of the bedtime routine, and there is no reason to believe that once children start progressing through school, you must stop reading together. In fact, research has shown that reading together helps parents and children relax, exchange ideas and thoughts, and share special moments. Fathers reading to their children has been found to have a very positive impact on their child’s learning, according to education researchers.
As your children grow older, many books become available for them to choose from. Popular books by celebrity authors – often ghostwritten – are usually promoted by larger publishers, but there are many other interesting books found in libraries
and shops that can be enjoyed. The fiction and non-fiction sections of bookshops and libraries are excellent places to discover the next read. Share the books you enjoyed at their age; they will likely find them appealing too. Seek out books you will enjoy reading together as your children mature. Classics, both old and modern, offer much to nurture their imagination, vocabulary, and language skills for writing. Non-fiction is also valuable; boys especially enjoy books filled with facts and explanations of how things are made. Girls too, if given the opportunity. Limiting children to books solely designated for boys or girls can be restrictive, so young readers should explore a wide variety of books to discover those they truly enjoy.
Whatever the season or reason, buy or borrow a book and enjoy reading it with your child whatever their age!
THRIVING, NOT JUST SURVIVING: RETHINKING THE TRANSITION TO SENIOR SCHOOL
It’s long been said that the transition to senior school in Year 7 can make or break a child’s school experience. A recent study by the ImpactEd Group painted a worrying national picture: one in four pupils disengages during their first year of secondary school, with the drop in enjoyment and confidence greater for girls. Researchers tracking over 100,000 children found that trust, safety, and happiness decline sharply in Year 7 – and rarely bounce back. Behind every statistic, of course, is a child whose wellbeing and academic potential is at risk.
WHY CHILDREN BECOME DISENGAGED
The reasons are not hard to fathom. Bigger schools, complex timetables, unfamiliar faces –and, crucially, the loss of the close-knit relationships that primary schools nurture. Many pupils go from being known and understood to feeling like an anonymous number.
ARE ALL-GIRLS’ SCHOOLS OLD-FASHIONED?
At Portsmouth High School GDST, our all-girls’ school in Kent Road, Southsea, things look very different. Mention an all-girls’ school and people often imagine one of two extremes: either something terribly proper and old-fashioned, or a chaotic St Trinian’s sequel. We are neither. What we offer is warmth, and a genuine sense of community, coupled with high expectations.
CARING FOR THE INDIVIDUAL
Here, every girl is known. Small class sizes and outstanding pastoral care mean pupils are supported, heard, and encouraged to be themselves. Fun, creativity, and kindness sit at the heart of school life.
Transitions may be inevitable – but disengagement is not. At Portsmouth High, our girls don’t fade during Year 7; they flourish.

WHAT OUR YEAR 7 PUPILS SAY…
I love being at Portsmouth High School because I have made so many new friends. I've really enjoyed all my subjects, especially maths and English. It's a bit different from junior school as you move around a lot more rather than have lessons in the same classroom. There is even a separate science department building.
Molly, Year 7 pupil
Portsmouth High School has been very exciting since the day that I came. Just a few examples are going on an overnight bonding trip, re-enacting the Battle of Hastings, making new friends and meeting new people. There are lots of opportunities in the lunchtime clubs and a great variety of sports and academic classes to look forward to. PHS is different to my old school, it is bigger and has more opportunities.
Lucia, Year 7 pupil
So far I have enjoyed Year 7 enormously because the teachers are kind and help me and the lunches are really tasty. I love attending all my clubs, and the classes are really informative and interesting too.

THE YEAR 7 CLIFF-EDGE: WHY THE FIRST YEAR OF SECONDARY SCHOOL MATTERS MORE THAN EVER
Sarah
Parker, Head of Portsmouth High School
The leap from primary to secondary school is one of the most significant transitions in a child’s educational journey. Yet for many, it’s a leap into uncertainty. A recent national study by the ImpactEd Group found that one in four pupils disengages during Year 7, with girls experiencing a sharper drop in confidence and enjoyment. Trust, safety, and happiness often decline – and, worryingly, rarely recover.
This disengagement isn’t just a temporary wobble. It can have long-term consequences for academic achievement, mental health, and self-esteem. When children feel anonymous in larger, more complex school environments, they may retreat – socially, emotionally, and intellectually. The nurturing relationships of primary school are suddenly replaced by unfamiliar routines and faces, and the sense of being “known” can vanish.
But this trajectory isn’t inevitable. Parents play a crucial role in buffering the impact of this transition. Open conversations about school life, validating their child’s feelings, and maintaining consistent routines at home
can all help. Encouraging friendships, celebrating small wins, and staying in touch with teachers can also make a big difference.
Above all, children need to feel seen and heard. When they do, they’re more likely to stay engaged, resilient, and ready to thrive. The first year of secondary school doesn’t have to be a cliff-edge – it can be a launchpad.
Read the article opposite to see how Portsmouth High School address these “wobbles”.

WHITER, BRIGHTER AND STRAIGHTER?
PAIN FREE STRAIGHTENING
Anyone who remembers the old days of orthodontics knows how uncomfortable it could be. Metal train tracks, sharp wires, and tight brackets often left mouths sore and lips rubbed raw. Eating was awkward, smiling felt unnatural, and the look of heavy headgear was enough to make anyone dread their appointments. It was a long, painful process that many people still associate with straightening teeth.
Thankfully, modern Invisalign treatment has completely changed that experience.
“My teeth were my biggest insecurity I used to cover my mouth when I smiled, I laughed, and even when I was speaking to people, I was so self-conscious but they were looking at my teeth”
Jennifer, Southsea Patient
For Jennifer, the best part of Invisalign was how effortlessly it fitted into her life. The aligners were smooth, discreet, and almost invisible — no one even noticed she was wearing them (You can see her video talking about her experience on our website). She could remove them to eat or brush her teeth, and they never
interfered with work or social plans. The transformation happened quietly, with comfort and confidence growing week by week.
“I only had to go to the dentist every few months and when I did go in, it was such a pleasant experience everybody was so kind. Betty made me feel really comfortable.”
1 Subtle, almost invisible teeth aligners, not bright metal train tracks.
2 Feel confident smiling in photos.
3 Suitable at any age, a smile that makes you feel younger.
4 Predictable results with clear results.
5 Comfortable, less painful and can be removed for eating!

THE BIRDMAN OF SOUTHSEA – GEORGE HUNTLEY
Susan
Petrie
George and I met at the Boating Lake in Southsea, where he has lived for twenty years and regularly feeds the birds. His interest in nature began in childhood and, over the past four years, deepened into a commitment to feeding and caring for local bird populations.
He frequently looks after injured birds — often harmed by cars, building sites, cats, or people. Some injuries happen accidentally, such as when netting from Christmas tree wrapping ends up on the ground and tangles around birds’ legs. “Anna,” a pigeon, was one such victim.
Feral pigeons commonly nest on city buildings, replacing their natural cliff habitats. They feed on grains, seeds, and human food waste, gathering in large flocks that many consider a nuisance.
George once rehabilitated “Sally,” a seagull that eventually flew away after a year of care. Seagulls have become endangered, with numbers halved since the 1960s due to shrinking nesting habitats, depleted fish stocks, and inshore fishing.
Around Canoe Lake, young gulls can be seen chasing their parents and crying loudly for food; their older name, “mews,” imitates this call. In autumn, gulls drop nuts or shellfish from the air to crack them open.
George also feeds carrion crows in a nearby car park, where they gather in pairs or family groups, especially in November, searching for food. Some people offer birds leftover curry, which is unsafe and attracts foxes. George recommends day-old moistened bread, dog food (but not cat food, which is too high in protein), and peas for swans.
Different areas attract different species: swans, seagulls, and pigeons at Swan Lake; starlings near the fish and chip shop; and carrion crows on
Southsea Common, where they search under trees for worms, insects, seeds, fruit, and scraps.
Canoe Lake serves as a “swan nursery,” one of the main gathering points for juvenile mute swans in the Solent. Up to sixty young birds congregate there in winter. George feeds them moistened wheat bread and notes that their hard beaks can be surprisingly painful when they take food from your hand. Swan numbers have risen thanks to the ban on lead fishing weights, which once poisoned birds or tangled around their beaks and legs.
George also explained that birds see in ultraviolet light, giving them exceptional vision and a wide field of view. They are drawn to the bright reflective lines on his supermarket uniform. Many species — especially crows — have remarkable memories, can recognise individual human faces, and are skilled problem-solvers when searching for food.

EXHIBITION LOOKS AT LIFE IN A WAR TIME CITY
From the outbreak of war to air raid shelters, and VE Day a new exhibition at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth will look at the memories of children living in the city during the Second World War.
‘Fun, Fear and Familiarity’ A child’s view of Second World War Portsmouth opens at the museum on 12 December.
Over the last few months the museum, in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth’s School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies, has been interviewing people who lived in the city to ensure these stories are not lost.
Many of those interviewed are in their 80s and 90s now and were children at the start of the war in 1939, not knowing any different from the rationing and air raids.
Joan Bourne lived in Buckland. She says in her interview: “Most of the houses were bombed, and we used to jump over the back walls from one to the other. And then suddenly you’ve got someone screaming ‘Get out of here’. And it was because someone was still living in there.”
The exhibition looks at the impact of war on the city and its residents in relation to simple things like going to the
shop, the city cloaked in darkness and everyday family life. It will feature items from the museum's collection, photographs and a film of some of the interviews.
Tony Stephens lived in Southsea, he says: “I don’t think I saw a banana until the end of the war. What was available was good, substantial stuff. And of course, we had the Spam and corned beef, these sorts of things which were imported, I think. What we had was basic foodstuffs.”
There will also be a section looking at wartime photographer Victor Stewart who worked for the Portsmouth Evening News (now know at The News). His photographs provide a unique record of this period in the city’s history, and the experiences of local people.
2025 marked 80 years since the end of the Second World War, with the 80 anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8th May and Victory over Japan (VJ) on 15th August.
The D-Day Story is the only UK museum dedicated to telling the story of 6th June 1944. It is home to LCT 7074, the last preserved Landing Craft Tank that took part in D-Day landing on Gold beach. You can also discover the museum’s collection and explore the 83metre-long Overlord Embroidery.
The exhibition is free and runs from Saturday 13 December 2025 until Monday 12 January 2026 at The D-Day Story. For more information, visit theddaystory.com

EVERYONE DESERVES A CHANCE TO FLY!
This time last year it seemed we were all “holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity” and with the release of Wicked: For Good just around the corner it seems timely to revisit those wise words from our verdant friend with aerial classes in mind.
“I’M THROUGH ACCEPTING LIMITS”
When I’m at a Christmas drinks event and I tell someone that I run a circus school, 90% of the time their reaction is “oh, I could never do that!” and my favourite thing is to get them in the studio (not with a mulled wine in hand!) and prove them wrong. .
Not only because I am stubborn (just ask my husband) but because I love seeing their faces as they realise they are capable of so much more than they thought possible.
Circus is as close to play as exercise can get. Don’t worry, it’s not all play, we take safety very seriously. Seeing the glee in somebody’s face as they realise
the whole room has turned upside down for the first time since they were eight years old is one of the reasons I do this job. That, and once again I’ve proved someone wrong..
“TO THOSE WHO GROUND ME, TAKE A MESSAGE BACK FROM ME…”
Aerial is great for the body, don’t worry about being strong or bendy enough to start, that grows as you go. But as I’ve taught more and more - I've noticed how good aerial is for the brain.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that aerial is a meditative practice (otherwise our friends at LANO will come and have words with me)! However, maybe it’s meditation’s very close neighbour, maybe they invite each other round for a mince pie and mulled wine at Christmas. If I haven’t lost you with that metaphor - bear with me; it’s impossible to hold on to a trapeze bar and check your inbox at the same time, there is no school WhatsApp group chat asking if it’s PE tomorrow when you’re in the hoop and you cannot think about your tax return while focussing on wrapping a silks drop… otherwise it becomes a silks fall.
I know, it’s odd to think of aerial as grounding but when you’re up in the air, everything else fades away. Aerial gives your mind a chance to slow down and focus on just one thing.
“YOU CAN’T PULL ME DOWN”
Aerial is as close to flying as we’re going to get without growing wings and as close to magic as we’ll get without being Paul Daniels.
There’s a feeling when you’re in the air that’s tricky to put into words, which is awkward, given that’s what this article’s about. So, I cheated and asked our students to do it for me (delegation at its finest).
They described the feeling as powerful, free, confident, strong, and alive
That last one’s my personal favourite, always good to hear. So don’t just take my word (or my dodgy Ozian metaphors) for it, come and see for yourself.
CLOSE MY EYES, AND LEAP
As adults we don’t like to try new things. We stick to what we know and what we know we’re already good at.
We worry that we might not be good at it, we might get it wrong or we might look silly.
I cannot promise you that you will not do any of those things in your first aerial class. In fact, I guarantee you’ll do at least one of them. But at ADA, what I can promise is a safe space where if you do any of those things - it won’t matter.
I implore you to be bad at something to begin with, to get it wrong and look silly, because that is where the magic is waiting for you.

Southsea Coffee Corner
Be My Guest… Coffee words and photo Olivia Smith
Most of us have a go-to coffee order. Maybe it’s a flat white, a cappuccino, an americano; with oat milk, soya, dairy; 2 sugars or syrup; something familiar and comforting that hits the spot every morning. But what if I told you that there are beans sold in our specialty coffee shops that produce coffees that taste fruity like strawberries or blueberries: nutty, floral, or zesty citruses? Coffee with a unique, unforgettable flavour profile, waiting for you to explore its subtle layers, surprising aromas, and alluring essence in every sip.
Specialty coffee shops often showcase these kinds of beans through guest espressos or alternative brewing methods like the V60, Filter, or AeroPress: drinks that reveal just how complex and expressive coffee can be.
Here in Southsea, we’re lucky to have a few places that offer an alternative to their house blend, cafés such as Southsea Coffee, Hunter Gatherer, and Hideout. What I have noticed as a barista working in establishments that provide guest coffees is the divide of people who order them. Those who are curious or have zeal towards coffee are the ones who will jump right in, while others approach with apprehension, which I understand fully as I once was someone who was intimidated to try something outside of my norm.
where adding milk or sugar ruins the coffee itself. The intimidation also came from the worry of not being able to identify their tasting notes. One day I took the courage to ask a barista about a V60, expressing my nervousness towards ordering one.
When I tried my first hand brew, I found myself bewildered and astonished. It wasn’t bitter, it was in fact incredibly smooth, delicate, and layered with flavour. It opened a new door in the world of coffee. Although it took me time to move to drinking black coffees and espressos fully, I would opt for having guest espressos in my flat white, or a filter when I felt more adventurous.
For those who find black coffee a little too bold but still want to explore coffee’s wider world of flavour, guest espressos offer the perfect introduction. In a flat white or latte, they add depth, creaminess, and a touch of natural sweetness.
When I first began exploring beyond my usual flat white, I was nervous. The idea of drinking a black coffee – no milk, no sugar – it sounded too intense, especially technical brews like V60s and AeroPress’s,
As with fine wines and craft beers, coffee is full of nuance and variation. Luckily, here in Southsea, we have a handful of places that celebrate that craftsmanship. If you’re curious where to start, Southsea Coffee is showcasing Scenery as their guest coffees. Their espresso is the Buena Vista Pacamara from Guatemala: jammy, cherry-pie, and chocolate-truffle notes, both great black or as a flat white.
Step inside while it's still on and follow your curiosity; with a roaring guest list, there's always a new flavour to uncover.

CHEF-LED. FRESH. SOUTHSEA COFFEE
Twelve years in and the menu’s got a grown up swagger.
What started off as killer coffee and good toast is now a tight, chef led kitchen that moves with the seasons. We make everything here, cooking every day... no shortcuts, no sad eggs.
Expect soup specials, contemporary brunch, French toast that pulls a crowd and a Benedict that outshines The Ivy (or so we’re told). Homemade focaccia, house-baked cakes and daily plates built from actual ingredients, no corners cut. It’s more bistro at heart; fewer dishes, more care, flavour first.
Come and eat lunch in December/January and the cake is on us.

After nearly two decades as a beloved, family-run café and bistro, Delaneys Southsea is proud to announce a new chapter in its story marked by an extensive refurbishment, an exciting new business partnership, and the longawaited pedestrianisation of Castle Road.
Located in the heart of Southsea’s vibrant Castle Road, Delaneys has long been known for its warm welcome, friendly service, and menus celebrating the best of local, seasonal, and homemade. From breakfast and brunch to freshly prepared lunches and Sunday roasts, Delaneys remains a cornerstone of the local dining scene, and it’s now looking better than ever.
Following a major refurbishment and interior refresh, the space has been reimagined to create a relaxed yet contemporary environment that transitions seamlessly from a daytime café/bar into an evening bistro, wine and cocktail bar. The updated extended wine and Coravin list offers a carefully curated selection of wines from both local and international vineyards, allowing guests to enjoy premium wines by the glass, perfectly preserved through the Coravin system.
This transformation comes at a significant time for the area. After five years of Castle Road being partially closed for social distancing measures, the long-discussed pedestrianisation project is finally becoming a reality. As one of the street’s longest-
standing businesses, Delaneys has been involved in the process, with the CRCA CIC, working closely with the council, residents and fellow traders for over five years to help shape a more vibrant, community focused future for Castle Road.
“For us, it’s always been about community. We’ve grown with Southsea, and Castle Road is our home. Seeing the street come to life over the years and now through pedestrianisation, after years of hard work, planning, and patience, is something we’re truly proud to be part of. Our refurbishment and new offerings are all about celebrating that sense of renewal.”
Adding to the excitement, at Delaneys we are launching a series of Supper Clubs, with intimate communal dining experiences that celebrate different cuisines, featuring five themed courses, a welcome cocktail, and live performances from local artists.
Whether it’s a morning coffee, a lazy weekend brunch, or an evening of great food, fine wine, and live music, Delaneys continues to be a place where food, community, and connection are at the heart of everything.

It’s that time of the year when we load up our plates with all the good stuff: meats or nut roast, Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes, to name but a few. ‘Good’ in terms of taste, but maybe not so ‘good’ in terms of health.
Don’t worry, this article isn’t a lecture.
One food type that helps us feel slightly better about our dietary choices during the festive period is the hardy vegetable. Sprouts, parsnips, peas, I’ll take them all! There is one vegetable, however, that I’m not so keen on...
I think back to a frontline job I attended one Christmas, where our ambulance cab screen lit up just before midnight with the words: ‘Cooking injury’.
Naturally, my crewmate and I began to suspect whether a burn or a utensil caused the injury. Upon arrival at the patient’s property, the front door was open ajar and we made our presence known before walking into the hallway. “In here!” was the slightly concerned reply from the kitchen.
As we entered the kitchen, we were met by a man, hunched forward whilst holding his stomach, in seeming discomfort, with four or five vegetables of varying sizes at his feet.
Oh, and he was completely naked. A few seconds of silence passed.
“How can we help?” my colleague asked the patient.
“Funny story,” the patient began, still appearing somewhat uncomfortable. “I was cooking, and once I finished, I decided to clean up. But I slipped on the
wet floor and landed on this bag of vegetables, and now my butt hurts so much because I think there’s something stuck!”
If kale-tumbleweed existed, one would have rolled past at this point.
“Just for paperwork purposes,” I questioned, “you were cooking, ate your dinner and then cleaned up, all whilst naked, slipped on the floor and have landed perfectly on an upright vegetable that you now think has become stuck?”
The gentleman nodded enthusiastically in agreement with my assessment of the situation.
“Would you mind if we take a quick look to see what’s going on?”
With that, the man turned around and slowly bent forward.
I won’t describe too much of what we witnessed that night, but let’s just say after the several conversations explaining to the patient how we were not able to “just pull it out”, and that hospital treatment would be needed to rectify (*ahem*) the current situation, my crewmate and I gave said vegetable variety a miss for a good few weeks afterwards...
Well, I hope you all enjoy your Christmases, wherever and however you choose to celebrate it. Although cooking and cleaning are expected during this time, I must warn you that it can be risky – especially when leftover vegetables seem eager for revenge! Stay safe – and dress appropriately out there Pompey.
