BABY LEAF SPINACH

Winning the Race!

As an international seed company Sakata Seed recognizes spinach as an important global crop. The demand for spinach has increased over the years due to the convenience and wide array of baby leaf packaging and products, including clam shells, bags and spring mixes. This is in addition to already robust bunch, clip and frozen spinach markets. A major concern for the spinach industry is the proliferation of downy mildew (Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae (= P. effusa)) races. A new race of downy mildew has been identified nearly every year since 2000. Resistance to downy mildew is important to the entire spinach industry from seed companies to growers to distributors, and even to consumers. Sakata is dedicated to breeding for resistance to downy mildew. We work closely with leading spinach pathologists at the University of Arkansas, The International Working Group Peronospora, and key growers and distributors around the globe. We test our commercial and developing spinach varieties to all new races. In 2016 UA201519B was named race 16 by The International Working Group Peronospora. We have tested our commercial spinach varieties for resistance. Currently our main baby leaf varieties C2-606, Seaside, Riverside, Lakeside, and Oceanside have resistance to race 16. Along with three of our processing spinach lines, and three of our oriental spinach lines.

In addition, we are actively breeding to develop a wide range of spinach varieties for the global baby leaf market that are resistant to downy mildew. Our breeders and pathology team are working closely together to screen new lines of spinach that we anticipate will move to the global spinach market soon.

Can Collards be the New Kale? We are all familiar with the kale boom of recent years. In restaurants alone, it appears on 400% more menus than just 5 years ago. According to USDA data, the number of farms harvesting kale more than doubled from 954 in 2007 to 2,500 in 2012. That’s more farms than are harvesting spinach.

Looking ahead, what can you grow to shape the next ‘superfood’ demand increase? The largest growing areas of kale by state are California, Georgia, New Jersey, and Texas. Collards are an ideal crop addition in these locations. Collards offer a short crop time (usually 6-8 weeks), the ability to capture repeat cuts after several weeks, and a wide window of planting opportunities (from November through April in some areas to year-round in others). In terms of marketing after harvest, bunched or chopped and bagged are the most common forms for sale. For farm markets or stands, removing center stalks before sale can create a product worthy of a much higher price point. Collards also have a relatively good shelf life and can be kept bright and crisp 4-5 days on display.

Examining nutrients, collards are just as worthy of ‘superfood’ status as kale and should be touted as such. Per serving, they offer the same amount of fiber and lower calories, carbohydrates and fat. Collards provide over 100% RDA of vitamins A and K, and higher amounts of folate and vitamins B3, B5 and E. They also contain similar amounts of important disease fighting phytonutrients as kale. If you already grow kale, collards easily fit into your current planting regime. If not, try adding collards to your program and help create the next big thing!

G

Garden to Table: Drinking Your Fruit and Vegetables! Healthy smoothies and juices add some needed servings of vegetables and fruits to our diets. Many vegetables, including leafy greens are wonderful in smoothies and easy to grow in the garden. Smoothies and juices use large volumes of premium greens, fruit, and vegetables that customers need to buy on a regular basis. Your final customer will be looking for fresh, bright leaves. Tender baby size leaves work best for blended drinks. Greens and herb leaves should be harvested young and eaten shortly after they leave your field. Look for new beet varieties grown just for the greens and spinach bred for baby leaf.

Smoothie Tips: • Keep a “bullet” type blender on the counter, near the sink. Several, individual smoothies are the perfect answer for picky eaters since you make one serving at a time. • Stock up on pumpkins and winter squash! Bake them (halved and seeded) in a pan of shallow water. Peel the cooked fruit and keep the pulp in the fridge and freezer. Use for smoothies or soups. • Buy greens—the fresher the better! Favorites include baby spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard, herbs and kale. Great in smoothies, all can be harvested, chopped and frozen into baggies so they are ready to go. Frozen greens are easier to blend. • Pick your liquids—non-fat milk, unsweetened soy milk, almond and cashew milks are all good creamy options. For a tropical flavor try coconut water. • Use a thickening base—most people use about ½ a banana per smoothie. Keep peeled chunks in the freezer. Other good options are non-fat Greek yogurt, nut butters, powdered peanut butter, berries, mango, protein powders and pineapple. • Customize—Matcha powder, wheat germ, grated ginger, oats, bran, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and carob powder keep things interesting. • Smoothies can be the perfect go-to for a light lunch.

What is ‘GSPP?’ GSPP, or ‘Good Seed and Plant Practices’ is an accreditation system based on a process approach (prophylactic measures) to prevent seed and plant transmitted pathogens in tomato seed. In layman’s terms, the GSPP accreditation process is a lengthy process dedicated to ensuring seed is immaculately clean and free of pathogens and disease through a company-audit examining quality management, protocol procedures and work methods. GSPP seed provides added benefit to the grower by ensuring that the purchased seed is clean, pure and unable to spread disease to other crops in their program. GSPP applies to the tomato crop and is mainly concerned with the pathogen, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. Michiganensis, or Cmm.

What Does this Mean for Sakata Customers? Moving forward, Sakata will now offer customers commercial varieties as GSPP certified seed that have the GSPP logo associated with them in this catalog. The list of varieties offering GSPP certified seed will continue to grow as varieties continue to be developed.

Breeding Value: Earliness Pays In recent years, not much attention was paid to breeding earliness into triploid watermelons because earliness didn’t always equate with firmness and great yield potential. A grower had to choose one or the other. Not anymore! Today, Sakata has introduced excellent triploid varieties, like Bold Ruler, Charismatic, Citation and Secretariat that are firm and sweet, significantly earlier than standard varieties and offer high yield potential - the perfect formula for grower success. Market data and trends show that in nearly every key seedless growing area in the United States, the price is highest at the beginning of harvest and continues to descend as harvest goes along. With this data it would seem to make sense that if a variety yields “We grew five varieties from as much, has equal firmness and meets all other qualities of a later-maturing variety, then the grower would three companies this season benefit financially by adding early-maturing varieties to their program. Seeing is believing for many growers including Dustin Blank, owner of B and H Farms in Estero, FL. Dustin comments, “We grew five varieties from and Charismatic stood out companies this season and Charismatic stood out the most across the board in earliness, quality, and the most across the board in three tonnage. What’s more, it held its size across multiple harvests.”

earliness, quality, and tonnage. What’s more, it held its size across multiple harvests.”

Potential benefits of earliness include fewer sprays, less fertilizer, less irrigation and less exposure to weather risks. The greatest benefit of all could be the ability to take advantage of the early-market price while others are waiting to harvest later maturing varieties.

Sakata Early Varieties + Early and Prolonged Pollenizers + Early Bees = SUCCESS Since the pollen in triploid male flowers is not viable and female flowers in triploid plants require viable pollen to set fruit, it follows that there must be separate seeded pollenizer plants available to provide pollen. Triploid watermelon is mainly pollinated by bees and other insects that hop from flower to flower and distribute pollen from seeded pollenizer plants to triploid hybrid plants. Because watermelon flowers open only for a short time, it is essential that bees and pollen are present during pollination. It is also essential that the full-flowering period of the seedless plants (which takes about 3 to 4 weeks) should match with the full-flowering period of the pollenizer plants, in order to have plenty of pollen available during pollination. Lack of pollen during full flowering of seedless watermelon plants will have a negative effect on the total yield and fruit quality. Therefore, early-maturing seedless watermelon hybrids should be combined with early and prolonged-flowering pollenizer plants to get high yield and quality watermelon production in commercial production fields. And, we cannot stress enough, when growing early-maturing watermelon hybrids, you must have the bees placed in the field earlier than with traditional, later varieties. For winning results, Sakata recommends using Ace and Wild Card pollenizers.

TERMS

T

Sakata Seed America Definitions of Terms used to Describe Reactions to Pathogens, Pests and Stresses The terms used in this catalog to describe the reactions of varieties to various diseases, pests, or stresses are consistent with those developed and used in the sciences of plant pathology and plant breeding, and by the International Seed Federation.

Immunity Not subject to attack or infection by a specified pest or pathogen. Resistance Resistance is the ability of a plant variety to restrict the growth and development of a specified pest or pathogen and/or the damage they cause when compared to susceptible plant varieties under similar environmental conditions and pest or pathogen pressure. Resistant varieties may exhibit disease symptoms or damage under heavy pathogen or pest pressure. Two levels of resistance are defined: • High resistance (HR): plant varieties that highly restrict the growth and development of the specified pest or pathogen under normal pest or pathogen pressure when compared to susceptible varieties. These plant varieties may, however, exhibit some symptoms or damage under heavy pathogen or pest pressure. • Intermediate resistance (IR): plant varieties that restrict the growth and development of the specified pest or pathogen, but may exhibit a greater range of symptoms or damage compared to “highly resistant” varieties. Intermediately resistant plant varieties will still show less severe symptoms or damage than susceptible plant varieties when grown under similar environmental conditions and/or pathogen or pest pressure.

Tolerance(T) The ability of a plant variety to endure an abiotic stress without serious consequences for growth, appearance and yield. Susceptibility The inability of a plant variety to restrict the growth and development of a specified pest or pathogen. Resistance claimed in a plant variety is limited to the specified biotype, pathotype, race or strain of the pathogen or pest. If no biotypes, pathotypes, races or strains are specified in the resistance claim for the variety, it is because no generally accepted classification of the cited pathogen or pest by biotype, pathotype, race or strain exists. Statements on the reaction of varieties to a specific pathogen, pest or stress are based on evaluations made under defined conditions and are believed to be reliable. However, it is important to understand that these reactions can be affected in nature by environmental, biological (e.g. new pathogen races or pest biotypes which overcome resistance), or other uncontrollable factors that may alter expected performance, and thus are not covered by the original resistance claim.
