JUMBO

ORIENT WONDER

Favas are a popular shell bean in the Mediterranean. Our variety is easy to grow, with strong, vigorous plants that are relatively tolerant of cooler conditions. The pods are dark green and shiny and produce a high ratio of three extra-large beans per pod. Suitable for outdoor culture in warm seasons and for greenhouse culture.

A pole-type bean, also known as yard-long or asparagus bean. Slender 15 to 18 inch pods can be eaten lightly steamed or added to a stir-fry. Plants are vigorous and vining; pods are slow to form seeds, remaining tender for extended harvest. Far superior to standard strains.

Storage Tips for Preserving Flavor HEALTHY

• Vegetables that originate in warm climates, like beans, peppers, okra and summer squash, keep best at a temperature around 50°F. HINT S

• Tomatoes should be stored on the kitchen counter and used within a few days. The cold temperatures of refrigeration ruin the flavors. • Winter squash are best stored in a cool, dark place away from heat. • Most other vegetables keep best at a temperature around 32-35°F. • Leafy greens should be washed, drained, wrapped loosely in paper or cloth towels and refrigerated in a tightly sealed container.

KALE

GREEN LANCE

BLUE RIDGE

This hybrid Chinese kale, or “gai lan,” is a popular vegetable in Southern Asia. It resembles a small version of broccoli, with slender stalks that are harvested and sold in bunches when two or three flowers open. It likes humidity but can be grown nearly anywhere if soil is kept moist. About ten days earlier than OP types, with thicker stems. After main stem is cut, it branches freely for extended harvests.

Blue Ridge features dark, blue-green foliage with an attractive, full curl on all leaves. It offers a semi-tall plant type, mid-season maturity and an extended harvest of heavy yields. It is also slow to bolt or stretch and is widely adapted to all growing areas where cool season crops are planted. A nice addition to mixed containers of salad greens or as an ornamental edible.

This small pie pumpkin weighs in at only 2 to 3 pounds and has a unique rounded-oval shape. The handles are dark green and well-attached, easy for small hands to pick up and carry. The fruit’s smooth exterior is great for painting or carving and the flesh is dense and mildly flavored for cooking. Compact vines take up less space in the garden.

Captain Jack is an extra large, tall-barrel Jack O’ Lanterntype pumpkin. Its thick flesh and flat bottom enables the fruit to stand on its own without toppling over. The extremely large, thick embedded handle is in proper scale to the large fruit size. The vigorous plant can support several fruits without diminishing the larger size of the fully mature fruit.

IMPERIAL GREEN

TYEE

TORTOISESHELL

A mid-season Asian spinach that is ideal for fresh markets and home garden. The plant habit is very erect, with long stems and very dark green leaves. Imperial Green shows better bolt tolerance and mildew resistance than similar varieties. A top choice for using in fresh salads, either alone or mixed with other greens.

Acclaimed in the gardening industry as best in its class due to exceptional flavor, slow-bolting habit, and consistent, high-quality yields. Thick, deep green leaves are semi-savoy with rounded tips. Heat and disease tolerant, Tyee is suitable for fall, spring, and summer use in the home garden, market gardens or for container sales.

A smooth-leaf spinach with slightly puckered veining on dark green, oval leaves. It can be grown yearround for both baby leaf harvests or for use at full maturity. It offers a slow growth rate and good disease resistance. Tender and mild in flavor, Tortoiseshell is great in spring mix greens or as a stand-alone for spinach salad or in a sautĂŠ.

K2 Our new Supersweet corn has outstanding eating qualities due to its high sugars, rich flavor and good tip fill. We recommend planting in fully warmed soils.

SQUASH Winter

ATLAS

TIVOLI

Atlas offers high yields of uniformly sized and shaped fruits with long, cylindrical necks and slight bulb ends. The small ends make them easier to cut and prepare for cooking. A mid-maturing variety with light cream skin and dark orange flesh, the 5 to 7 pound fruits are ready at about 110 days. Strong vines are somewhat restricted, taking up less space in the garden than full vine types.

This AAS-winning hybrid is the first bush-plant Spaghetti squash. Tivoli has a small bush habit that offers high yield potential per plant. Fruits are large and oval in shape, measuring 6 x 9.5 inches, with creamy flesh that is very easy to shred with a fork after roasting. Like other bush-habit winter squash varieties, it will produce short vines after the initial fruit set.

SWEET DUMPLING

SUPER DELITE

Sweet Dumpling is a beautiful squash that can be used for both cooking and ornamental purposes. The small, 8 to 10 ounce fruits are round with high shoulders, with dark green stripes atop a creamy background. The light yellow interior flesh has a smooth texture with a sweet and delicate flavor. The small fruit size is ideal for 2 servings by simply slicing in half and roasting.

Super Delite is a dark green-skinned Kabocha squash with a bright, golden yellow interior color. Oblate shaped fruits, maturing to 4 to 5 pounds in approximately 100 days, grow on vigorous vines. The fruits have a robust flavor, rich sweetness and dense and finely grained texture.

WINTER SQUASH

Variety

Relative Maturity Direct Seeded

Bake, Roast or Steam HEALTHY

HINT S

Winter squash is more nutrient dense than summer squash. The deeper the flesh color, the higher the amount of beta carotene. It also provides more soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. A typical ½ cup serving also provides good amounts of Vitamin C and potassium and few calories. Bake, roast or steam your winter squash to retain the most nutrients.

Try this! Don’t let fear of correctly preparing spaghetti squash deter you from trying it. This is our favorite method: Preheat oven to 375° degrees. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and strings in the center cavity. Place in a baking dish and rub the surface of each half with olive oil and 3-4 cloves of minced garlic, then season each with salt and pepper. Bake for 50-55 minutes; remove from oven and place in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. Then hold each halved piece over a large bowl and, using a fork, scrape the surface of the squash until it “strings” and pulls away from the shell. Prepare as you would any pasta dish.

Watermelon has more of the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable – even the tomato. Watermelon consumption has also been shown to increase the body’s free arginine, which helps maintain cardiovascular function. An earlier maturing selection developed from the wellknown variety Mammoth. The vigorous, strong plants reach a final height of 30 to 40 inches and produce highly aromatic, fine, dark green leaves topped by large flower heads. Harvest the ferny foliage for the popular herb or the seeds for the pickling spice.

Dukat produces much higher yields of foliage than other dill varieties. The dark green, ferny leaves also have a distinct, strong aroma that adds depth to any fish, vegetable or pasta dish. Vigorous plants eventually reach 30 to 40 inches tall and are topped with very large umbels. Suitable for summer culture as well as the typical spring and fall.

HERBS PARSLEY DARK GREEN ITALIAN

PARSLEY OVERWINTER PLAIN

Our selection of this heirloom flat-leaf parsley offers a broader leaf with more flavor than other varieties. The glossy, dark green, moderately cut leaves mature in 65-70 days and are well suited for both home garden and fresh market use. Organic and non-organic seeds available.

This very productive, flat-leaf type parsley boasts a distinctive flavor and rich, dark green leaves. Slightly later in maturity (77-80 days), its winter hardiness makes it ideal for overwintering into the spring in both the home garden and for fresh market production.
