BlueSport From Front Cover turbo engine develops its maximum torque of 350 Newton-meters. That matches the power response of an approximate 300 PS strong six-cylinder gasoline engine! A 6-speed dual clutch transmission – the most economical and agile transmission system in the world – transfers this power to the rear wheels. It is shifted either automatically or via shift paddles on the steering wheel. In just 6.2 seconds the sports car is moving at a speed of 60 mph; its top speed is 140 mph. These are the key parameters of a new and at the same time classic European sports car philosophy. The Concept BlueSport is evolving into a car that is a lot of fun to drive and at the same time makes an unmistakable statement in terms of sustainability. The fact is: if the Concept BlueSport were to go into production it could herald in a renaissance of the compact roadster. Another fact: this car handles just as well in the urban environ ment of metropolises as it does on very curvy country roads and long expressway routes. Concept without compromises Volkswagen defined just two objectives in the car’s development: maximum driving fun and minimal fuel consumption. And so a midengine sports car was implemented that makes no compromises, that aims at low weight and maximum agility right from the start. Although it is best in its class when it comes to body rigidity, the Concept BlueSport weighs in at less than 1,200 athletic kilograms. The results:

sive for every life situation, in addition to the cited fuel economy and emissions advantages. Low weight was attained by consistent application of lightweight construction methods (among other things, the soft top is the lightest in its class, and the hoods are made of aluminum), and by a body layout with crisp and compact dimensions. Despite all of the sports car fascination included on board, it still offers a respectable level of everyday utility. In the cargo area under the front hood combined with its counterpart in the rear can easily stow enough luggage for an extended October 2009

weekend trip for two. Also extended are the distances between any two fuel fillups. With a fuel tank volume of 13 gallons and the noted fuel economy of 42 mpg, the theoretical range is greater than 710 miles. Making a positive impact on the car’s range, fuel economy and emissions are two technologies that could become more and more commonplace in the future and are part of the so-called Eco mode on the Concept BlueSport: an automatic start-stop system and braking energy regeneration. The place where automatic startstop shines is in city traffic. When the Concept BlueSport stops at a red traffic light, for example, it automatically shuts off its engine. As soon as the light turns green again, just tapping on the gas pedal is enough to start the engine lightning fast. Furthermore, primarily when the Concept BlueSport is braked, energy is generated by the alternator (regeneration), which relieves the engine and

I-Car Volunteers Work With Ohio State University To “Develop A Curriculum” I-CAR, the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair is continuing to refine its training products based upon feedback directly from the collision inter-industry. The latest effort to improve the feedback is ICAR’s launch of a DACUM, (Develop A Curriculum) process for occupational analysis supported by the Ohio State University’s Center on Education and Training for Employment (CETE). The Ohio State University (OSU) website describes the DACUM process as “involving local men and women with reputations for being the ’top performers’ at their jobs, working on a short-term committee assignment with a qualified DACUM facilitator. Workers are recruited directly from business and industry. These workers become the Panel of Experts who collectively and cooperatively describe the occupation in the language of the occupation.”

Jason Bartanen, I-CAR Technical Director explained, “In the past, I-CAR identified what it felt was most appropriate training for specific roles in the industry based upon a combination of technical research and industry feedback. The DACUM process I-CAR is using in conjunction with OSU provides a more structured process that allows the people who actually do the work to tell us what they do. I-CAR, along with other inter-industry training organizations, can then begin to develop a training and career path for those individuals.” I-CAR included several individuals from both the collision repair and insurance industries in the two two-day sessions that took place July. WaterMasters Luncheon Touts Waterborne Advantages Collision repair operators were treated to a luncheon and a presentation on the advantages of converting to waterborne products on August 19 by WaterMasters, the waterborne division of FinishMaster. The seminar addressed the benefits of converting to water-

Not only that, waterborne products enhance productivity and increase profits. Plus converting gives operators a chance to stay out in front of the curve of regulation.” According to Butler, the real opportunity of waterborne technology is establishing a “green” marketing program. Converting to waterborne products will decrease the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emitted in the air during the color coating process by up to 70%, allowing the shop the opportunity to label itself as “environmentally friendly.” In addition, the waterborne refinishing process reduces dust and paint residue making it safer for customers and technicians. Waterborne basecoats provide a superior color match as over 80% of

vehicle manufacturers utilize waterborne color coats at the factory. The durability is as good, if not better, than solventbased products. Honeywell Survey Finds Majority of Americans Taking Car Care Into Their Own Hands In the reversal of what has been nearly a decade-long trend, many Americans are now reporting that they are tackling more of their own vehicle maintenance, according to a new study conducted for Honeywell. The survey finds over half (51 percent) of American vehicle owners rolling up their sleeves and handling more car care on their own versus a year ago. And an overwhelming majority (89 percent) of these new-found "DIYers" admits they didn't really perform these tasks before - they typically hired a professional. "People are looking for ways to save money and taking routine vehicle maintenance into their own hands is a great place to start," says Jim Brown, Director of Communications at Honeywell Consumer Products Group, maker of FRAM, Prestone and Autolite products. "Where in recent years folks might just add wiper fluid or change the air filter, they are now tackling more difficult tasks, just as generations before them used to do." Sixty-one percent are topping off or changing the antifreeze, more than half (54 percent) are changing the oil filter; and over one in four (32 percent) report changing their spark plugs.

"With access to the Internet and brands like FRAM, Prestone and Autolite providing downloadable videos and tutorials on their websites, it's much easier now for motorists to learn how to do these things," adds Brown. But while certain activities are becoming more common-place in residential garages across the country, there's a disturbing trend at play here too, says Brown: the economy has driven more than half (51 percent) of the country's car owners to only take care of the bare minimum on their vehicles and more than one in five (21 percent) to avoid service altogether, according to the study, which was conducted by Kelton Research, a leading national public opinion company. Furthermore, not enough folks are making smart investments - including purchasing higher-quality maintenance products and handling big ticket repairs. "It's great to see some motorists taking on more themselves, however, some consumers are making poor decisions when it comes to their vehicle's care," said Jay Buckley, Technical Training Manager for FRAM, Prestone and Autolite, and a certified Master Mechanic. "This can be catastrophic for

a family struggling to get by." "A decision to avoid maintenance could mean the difference between spending $7 on a gallon of antifreeze to top off your cooling system versus paying upwards of $1,000 for a blown head gasket if you consistently run low," adds Buckley, who offers some suggestions for today's cash-strapped car owners. Find a good, certified mechanic who is willing to talk to you about your car's symptoms and come up with a plan to fix any problems. Don't avoid the repair shop. Vehicles should still be inspected by a professional from time to time to make sure there are no other issues that could lead to costly repairs. If topping off or changing your own antifreeze/coolant, consider an all makes/all models extended life formula since it can be used on every vehicle in the household, and be sure to read up on proper disposal. At your next oil change or tune up, upgrade to products that offer longer change intervals. You pay a little more upfront but often can go much longer between service. Switch to a washable air filter. It's an economically sound decision with less environmental impact.n

Ford Unveils ‘Intelligent’ System for Plug-In Hybrids to Communicate with the Electric Grid

Ford and its utility partners are testing one of the industry’s first vehicle-to-electric grid communications and control systems, which enables electric vehicles to interface with the grid for optimal recharging The new technology allows the vehicle operator to program when to recharge the vehicle, for how long and at what utility rate. For example, an operator could choose to charge only during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper, or when the grid is using renewable energy Since 2007, Ford and its research partners in the utility industry have conducted more than 75,000 miles of plugin hybrid testing to advance the commercialization of electric vehicles Ford introduces a pure battery electric Transit Connect commercial van in 2010, a battery electric Focus compact car in 2011, and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2012 Ford Motor Company announced that it has developed an intelligent vehicle-to-grid communications and control system for its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that “talks” directly with the nation’s electric grid. This new technology - which builds on Ford’s advancements such as SYNC(R), SmartGauge(TM) with EcoGuide and

Ford Work Solutions(TM) - allows the vehicle operator to program when to recharge the vehicle, for how long and at what utility rate. “Electric vehicles are an important element of our strategy for improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions,” said Bill Ford, Ford’s executive chairman. “This vehicle-to-grid communication technology is an important step in the journey toward the widespread commercialization of electric vehicles.” All 21 of Ford’s fleet of plug-in hybrid Escapes eventually will be equipped with the vehicle-to-grid communications technology. The first of the specially equipped plug-in hybrids has been delivered to American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio. Ford’s other utility partners’ vehicles will also be equipped with the communications technology. When plugged in, the battery systems of these specially equipped plugin hybrids can communicate directly with the electrical grid via smart meters provided by utility companies through wireless networking. The owner uses the vehicle’s touch screen navigation interface and Ford Work Solutions in-dash computer to choose when the vehicle should recharge, for how long and at what utility rate. For example, a vehicle owner could choose to accept a charge only during

off-peak hours between midnight and 6 a.m. when electricity rates are cheaper, or when the grid is using only renewable energy such as wind or solar power. “We are designing what plugin hybrids and battery electric vehicles will be capable of in the future,” said Greg Frenette, manager of Ford’s Battery Electric Vehicle Applications. “Direct communication between vehicles and the grid can only be accomplished through collaboration between automakers and utility companies, which Ford and its partners are demonstrating with this technology.” Over the past two years, Ford and its energy industry partners have logged more than 75,000 miles on the plugin hybrid test fleet. The plug-in hybrid research focuses on four primary areas: battery technology, vehicle systems, customer usage and grid infrastructure. “Broad commercialization of electric transportation is not something a car company can achieve on its own,” said Nancy Gioia, Ford director, Sustainable Mobility Technologies. “Developing and producing the vehicles is just one part of the electric transportation equation. signature design features have emerged intact. “The mission for Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of hardcore automotive enthusiasts,” said Eric Stoddard, Hyundai senior creative designer. “With its aggressive look from just about any angle, I think we have been able to do that.” Genesis Coupe is also unmistakably linked to several Hyundai concept cars. The powerful curves, undulating beltline, surface detail and “Z” bodyside lines come straight from the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sport coupe concepts. Genesis Coupe’s arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car’s broad shoulders and wide stance. The Genesis Coupe’s rocker panels are drawn close to the ground making the bodysides extra thick and the daylight opening thin, allowing the wheels to be slammed up into bulging fenders. To complete the aggressive sports car look, the depth between the fenders and the greenhouse has been maximized. Large openings in the front fascia allow for better engine breathing. The

Interior Design The Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. Analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai’s signature blue gauge illumination. Bucket front seats with large side bolsters offer excellent lateral support for enthusiastic driving. Returning from August Recess, Congressional Support for 'Right to Repair Act' at 40 As Congress returns from the August recess, 40 members of Congress have declared their support of the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (HR 2057). Congressional support for the Right to Repair Act has steadily grown since its introduction. Most recently, Reps. G. K. Butterfield (D-NC), Bill Delahunt (D-CA), Marcia L. Fudge (DOH), Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Maurice D. Hinchey (D-NY), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), James P. Moran (D-VA), Thomas S.P. Perriello (D-VA) and Albio Sires (D-NJ) have added their names to the list of co-sponsors. "The Right to Repair Act simply requires that vehicle manufacturers provide car owners and their trusted neighborhood repair shops with the same access to the same repair information they provide to their dealer network

- nothing more, nothing less," said Ray Pohlman, president of the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality (CARE). "Supporters of Right to Repair are not seeking an unfair advantage, nor are they looking for access to the proprietary information protected by the bill. NBB Applauds Ford's B20 Approval in 2011 F-Series Super Duty Trucks Biodiesel supporters are cheering Ford Motor Company's announcement that its all-new Ford-built 2011 Ford FSeries Super Duty(R) diesel pickups will be fully compatible with a 20 percent biodiesel blend (B20). Ford's new diesel engine -- equipped with the latest technology for particulate and NOx reduction to meet stringent 2010 standards -- will also provide improvements in torque, horsepower and fuel economy. "This is the first of what we expect to be many formal announcements of B20 approval in new clean diesel

technology," said Steve Howell, technical director for the National Biodiesel Board. "With the formal approval and acceptance of B20 in the 2011 Super Duty, Ford now has a clean and green engine of tomorrow that will also reduce NOx emissions by more than 80 percent. NBB already has inquiries from biodiesel fans wanting to purchase a new B20 pickup!" The NBB and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory have spent more than $10 million testing B20 and understanding how it works in

the new diesel engines and after-treatment technology during the last five years. That's in addition to research and development efforts by the individual Original Equipment Manufacturers like Ford. The new F-Series engines were torture-tested internally by Ford to more than 250,000 miles to test their durability cycles with multiple biodiesel blends, according to the company. "It's rewarding to see the efforts by NBB and NREL start to pay off," said Howell, noting that most of the NBB funding for the testing was provided by U.S. soybean farmers through the soybean checkoff program. "The engine makers asked for an ASTM B20 blended standard, in addition to the pure biodiesel standard, and we worked hard to get it passed." Ford's support for B20 could have substantial market implications. Ford currently dominates the on-road diesel truck market with nearly a 46 percent market share of the diesel vehicle registrations in the U.S. according to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. The 2011 models will be arriving at dealerships in the first half of 2010. Biodiesel is produced from oils and fats which are byproducts of things like soybean protein and livestock. Made from diverse renewable resources, biodiesel reduces life cycle carbon dioxide values 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel fuel, according to studies by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Energy. It is an excellent choice for reducing greenhouse gases without impacting the food supply. "Clearly Ford sees that biodiesel blends will be an important part of our domestic fuel supply, or they wouldn't have invested the resources into approving B20," said Joe Jobe, NBB CEO. "This is an example of an automaker giving consumers more power to be green. A clean diesel engine with a green fueling choice." n

Genesis Coupe is lighter than the Infiniti G37, and its chassis is also 24 percent stiffer in bending rigidity than the BMW E46 M3. Rear-wheel drive provides a 55:45 front/rear weight distribution. Powertrains Two engines infuse Genesis Coupe with performance. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine delivers 306-horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque on regular unleaded. This engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. To maximize the power band, the 3.8-liter engine utilizes Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (Dual CVVT) and a new Variable Intake System (VIS) that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at both low and high RPM. The better-breathing results in outstanding off-the-line acceleration and passing performance and remarkable fuel efficiency. The V6 engine uses an alloy block and cylinder heads for lighter weight and thermal efficiency and features timing chains with no scheduled maintenance. The turbocharged, intercooled 2.0liter DOHC inline four-cylinder benefits from Dual CVVT on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The 2.0-liter turbo generates 210- horsepower and 223 lb.ft. of torque. It also features a cast-aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. Sport-tuned Suspension Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Music lovers will welcome the 2010 Genesis Coupe’s standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. When an iPod or flash drive is connected through the USB port, located in the center storage compartment, not only does it play music through the vehicle’s audio system, but it also charges the iPod and allows the driver to access tracks with the steering wheel audio controls. This system also allows both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than from the iPod. The system features 8GB of USB memory and comes matched with the Infinity 10-speaker, 360-watt sound system which plays compact discs, accesses digital music files employing Bluetooth streaming audio or allows driver and passenger to access their personal listening devices through the iPod®/USB/ auxiliary inputs. Bluetooth streaming audio wirelessly streams music from their phone to the Navigation system. Also with a Bluetooth-enabled phone one can look up a local restaurant and call for reservations before plotting the route. The XM Satellite Radio interface is also integrated into the navigation unit and features channel logos and realtime NavTraffic. XM Satellite Radio and NavTraffic service are complimentary for the first 90 days. A subscription is required to continue service. The system is also updateable via the USB port and the new multi-gauge information display features a high resolution clock, instantaneous fuel economy and torque readouts. URG Announces Results of a University of Colorado Study Quantifying the Benefits of Automotive Reuse and Recycling

The world's airliners could fly nearly 100 million miles with the energy saved each year by reusing steel fenders instead of manufacturing them new, says a new study prepared for the United Recyclers Group (URG) by the University of Colorado (CU). The study quantifies the benefits of automotive reuse and recycling by the nation's automotive recycling industry. The study specifically looked at reusing some common parts such as fenders and aluminum wheels, along with the reprocessing of motor oil extracted from 'end-of-life' (EOL) vehicles. According to Michelle Alexander, URG Executive Director, "The CU study estimates that nearly 11 million vehicles are taken off the road in America each year when they reach their so called 'End of Life' (EOL). This process of attrition is caused by accidents and also occurs as vehicles age. There are tremendous quantifiable environmental and financial benefits for consumers that are provided by the green American automobile recycling industry as these vehicles are processed both for the reuse of certain parts (known as 'green parts') and recycling of most of the remainder." A big question remains: What to do with 11 million EOL vehicles each year? Richard Filley, Executive Director of the not-for-profit GreenCARR Foundation(w ww.greencarr.org) says

that "America's 6,000 plus auto recyclers, know exactly what to do and they have been doing it proudly and profitably for over a hundred years. With leadership from URG and the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA), two not-for-profit trade organizations collectively representing over 2000 of the nation's top automotive salvage companies, what could be a huge problem for this nation dealing with a literal mountain of cars - is instead a huge asset to America's efforts to go green." Michelle Alexander says that "Thanks to our auto recycling industry, the brakes are being tapped on climate change; energy consumption is being reduced; less material is being mined, refined and used; many forms of pollution are lowered; and the carbon footprint for the whole auto industry is being reduced." The study was launched when Alexander contacted Dr. Angela Bielefeldt, PE, an award-winning professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU). Dr. Bielefeldt's successes in incorporating service-learning projects into her senior level design capstone course, won her a prestigious 'Early Career Award' from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The study was completed by a team of senior environmental engineering students com-

prised of Patrick Gere (lead), Tyler Sale, and Madeline Tyson. John Fischl, president of Riteway Auto Parts (Phoenix, AZ), and a URG Manager says that "For a typical EOL vehicle, about 75% of the parts are salvaged for reuse, about 20% of the vehicle is recycled, and the remaining 5% is thrown away." What that means, he adds is that an "EOL vehicle is one of the greenest products on the planet. Through the reuse of 'green parts,' vehicles may partly live on for years and years, at great environmental benefit to Planet Earth and important financial benefit to the consumer driving a vehicle needing repair parts. Some highlights of the study's major findings include the following: The recycling of steel fenders each year in the United States saves the mining of over 5 million tons of iron ore, nearly 3 million tons of coal, and over 250,000 tons of limestone as compared to the manufacture of an equivalent number of new steel fenders. The smelting of aluminum is very energy intensive, so it is no surprise that even more spectacular are the savings associated with the recycling of aluminum wheels. End of ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Program Creates Unprecedented Opportunity for Recycling Few could have imagined how popular the government’s “cash for clunkers” program would become. When all is said and done, some 800,000 cars will have been scrapped for new, more fuel efficient vehicles. While this is good for the environment in terms of emissions, it creates a host of challenges when talking about what to do with the scrapped vehicles. We here at Rubberecycle see great opportunity to reduce the impact these “clunkers” pose when it comes to the environment by taking advantage of technology to recycle key parts of the vehicles. “Consider the tires alone, with 800,000 vehicles you are looking at more

than 3 million tires. We can take and convert those tires into products people can use again to enhance the quality of their lives,” according to Keith Sacks, Vice President, Rubberecycle. One of the best uses for recycled tires is a rubber mulch product called “PlaySafer.” PlaySafer mulch is used in parks, playgrounds and backyards across the country. It is also the surface of choice for the White House playground! “This product has been proven in more than a hundred studies over nearly two decades to not only be safe but to enhance the safety of your children. The EPA has recommended it for years and Consumer Reports has given it two thumbs up as

well. It is a better, safer and smarter alternative to traditional wood mulch, gravel and sand products,” says Sacks. Consumers should also be cautious when it comes to buying tires from old “clunker” vehicles. Some of these tires will make it to the re-sale market and some may be safe for road use; there is a pretty good chance that the tires are clunkers themselves. “Cash for Clunkers” has been a tremendous boost to the economy and the environment. The challenge now is to keep that momentum going by making the best use of the discarded parts. Tire recycling is one giant green step in that direction.n

I-Car Adjusts Pricing Effective September 1, 2009 I-CAR, the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair, has announced changes in its pricing structure that will be effective September 1, 2009. Prices for U.S.-based Live Delivery training will increase, while prices for online training will decrease. The not-for-profit training organization is expanding its discount structure, offering additional discounts for online registrations. The new full-cost of a typical training class will move to $160 per point, however with the advance purchase of discount coupons, the cost of classroom training can be reduced to $112 per point. Gold Class Professionals™

businesses and Platinum Individual™ students will continue to receive further discounts, reducing the cost to $95 per point. The most economical pricing will be available to students who bypass the coupon process and who register and pay online using a major credit card. The use of online registration reduces the cost to $108 per point. In keeping with the practice of providing the best price incentives for Gold Class Professionals™ businesses and Platinum Individual™ students, the on-line registration and payment rate will be $91 per point for these groups, making this the lowestprice training option available.

In response to feedback from the industry, I-CAR will also be lowering its price for online training to $40 per onequarter point. ASA Announces Benefit Agreement with RepairPal The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has announced a new member benefit agreement with RepairPal, a provider of automotive repair and maintenance information to the motoring public. The agreement provides a 10 percent discount on AppointmentsPlus products to eligible ASA member businesses. The energy savings from not having to manufacture aluminum wheels alone would be enough to power Chattanooga, Tennessee or Panama City, Florida or the entire Big Island of Hawaii for an entire year. Another way to think about this is that the energy savings of the recycled aluminum are the equivalent of about 212 million gallons of gasoline, or over 11 million barrels of crude oil. This would fill up six oil supertankers, and equal the entire US

output of oil (including offshore platforms) for a couple of days, or perhaps more importantly, keep America from needing to import oil from a place like Venezuela for 11 days. End of Life vehicles are typically full of oil when they arrive at one of the automotive salvage facilities located across America for processing. The study estimates that over 24 million gallons of oil are extracted from EOL vehicles each year in the United States, under the strict regulatory oversight of federal, state and local environmental agencies and offices. Reprocessing motor oil is hugely beneficial to the environment, as

compared to the process of exploring, drilling, and refining new oil. Over 3.1 million tons of CO2 emissions are saved in the process, an amount that could offset the entire CO2 output of the United States for 45 hours this year. These statistics document the benefits and savings from just three part types from the vehicles that are taken out of service every year. The full benefit of recycling and reuse of the entire vehicle will provide much greater savings and environmental benefits than this preliminary study has revealed.
