SPACC PRIMARY COLOR SCH

Concluding 2012 with a promise for 2013 2012 has flown by and we have just weeks to go until the end of the year. I hope that 2012 was a good year for you and your company and that you have made the most of your Chamber investment.

by Matt Kramer

For example, do you have a product or service that you can advertise in our SPACC Savings? Or how about company news to share with over 11,000 readers of our Friday Facts newsletter? Your investment in the Chamber is much more about you than about us. We exist to advocate for, promote, and extend your business success. Whether helping you with city, county, or state issues or putting you front and center in a sponsorship opportunity, our work is a about you, not us.

Holiday Hints for Small Businesses

SPACC PRIMARY COLOR SCH

Deluxe survey reveals valuable insights, ideas for small business owners this holiday season ‘Tis the season for small businesses to rev up their competitive spirits and maximize their holiday profits. Large, national retailers and online retail giants are formidable foes for any small retailer looking to attract holiday customers. That fact is clear from the findings of a new survey by Deluxe Corporation, which showed that more than three-quarters of Americans shop for holiday gifts online, and those who go online to buy holiday gifts prefer major retailers (60 percent) versus small businesses (17 percent). But the survey also revealed some positive news – and potential ways to attract more customers – for smaller businesses and boutique stores. The keys to success are customization, personalization and getting noticed on the Web. Here are three ideas small business owners can employ to stand out in the minds of shoppers during this most wonderful – and potentially profitable – time of year. 1. Optimize your online presence. The Internet is a powerful shopping tool and small businesses must be highly visible in this virtual mall. “Customers will ignore you if they don’t see you, especially during the breakneck holiday season,” said Jay Bean,

founder of OrangeSoda, a search engine optimization and online marketing firm. “The first place many shoppers look – even for your physical location – is online.” While most online customers in the Deluxe survey (60 percent) generally purchase gifts from major retailers rather than small businesses, the Deluxe survey revealed a potential reason: Two-thirds of online shoppers don’t scroll beyond the first two pages of search results. “It’s a major problem for a lot of small businesses,” Bean said. “Competing with the Amazons of the world makes it critical for small businesses to be found quickly online.” Fortunately, firms like OrangeSoda cater to small businesses and provide comprehensive Internet marketing assistance, allowing owners to focus on what they do the best – running their businesses. “You’ve got to optimize your site for the keywords customers are using most often when trying to find you,” Bean said. “That will ensure you rank high in the search results.” 2. Print still wins hearts. Taking your marketing digital doesn’t mean abandoning more traditional forms of marketing. In fact, the Deluxe survey showed 90 percent people prefer traditional holiday cards versus electronic ones. “We all like getting a card in the mail – it makes us feel special,” said Dave Lessing, general manager of PsPrint, a Deluxe company. “But yours will quickly be thrown away if it looks junky or overly salesoriented.” How do you avoid this mistake? “You’ve got to personalize it. Tailor each piece you send to an individual customer and talk directly with him or her,” Lessing said. Print companies like PsPrint make it easy. The company’s designers 5

Meet George Hart, Heritage Wealth Architects pms 410

Q. How long have you been an ambassador? A. James and I have been recommending membership to the SPACC since we became members this spring, but I have only been on the Ambassador committee for roughly a month Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member? A. The most enjoyable part about being a member of the Chamber is getting to interact with a variety of people and businesses, and leveraging that knowledge to grow. It is also nice to share some of the information gathered through SPACC to others who have been in the community for much longer than I. Q. What is one piece of advice you would offer fellow members? A. I’m sure most members know that the SPACC has numerous committees and events, but might 15
