THE MYSTERIOUS ONE

EL MISTERIOSO

Last Sunday we gathered with Peter, John, and James at the mountain of Transfiguration and were summoned to listen to God’s chosen Son. This week the scriptures draw us into the mystery of just who that God is. The first reading, perhaps one of the best known in the Bible, recounts the story of Moses and the burning bush, when the mysterious divine name is revealed. The responsorial psalm is a hymn extolling the attributes of God. Saint Paul and the Lord Jesus describe a God who judges and metes out punishment. No matter the lengths to which the scriptures go, we know that no amount of words will ever come close to capturing who God is. Our lives and our Lents are really journeys toward that mysterious One who will one day welcome us into the heavenly home that awaits those who put their trust in God alone.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote If you were asked “What is the one issue I’d most like the next pope to address?” what would your answer be? Is it…      

The clerical sex abuse scandal and cover up The role of women in the church Repairing divisions within the Church Interfaith and ecumenical relations Reaching out to youth Other……..

The challenges in today’s church are many and it is difficult to define which is the most ominous. From my own years of ministering to the church I would say that the Catholic Church’s greatest challenge is the ongoing division between Catholics wanting to preserve the traditional church-teaching and those Catholics advocating modern changes. What I firmly believe is that traditionalists and progressives alike want a Church that guides each of us to have a personal relationship with a loving God. One of my greatest sorrows as a priest is this great divide that exists within our Church. On one side we have those concerned with the moral issues of birth control, abortion, euthanasia, marriage and family life. On the other side are those engaged in moral issues related to poverty, economic justice and war. I live for the day when both sides will work together in unity and mutual respect to protect the unborn and to care for the poor. This is when I believe that the Church will soar on eagle’s wings. These two opposite wings of the Church, traditionalists and progressives, are not moving in rhythmic symmetry. The Catholic Church believes God revealed Himself through Sacred Scripture and Tradition. While these two sources of revelation should be areas of common ground for Catholics, they can divide us. Traditionalists and progressives have a very different understanding of Church authority and the significance of Modern Biblical Criticism. Because of that, Catholics tend to take sides that divide the two groups. While this type of division does exist here at St. Francis, we are blessed not to hammer away at each other with condemnations, innuendos, insults or sarcasm. I am grateful that parishioners express their negative or positive comments thoughtfully, intelligently and in a calm well-reasoned way. With the election of a new Pope, whether he is considered a conservative or a progressive, it is a given that many will be pleased and others disappointed. Regardless of the outcome, we are a Church. We are a universal church. We are an incarnational church meaning that above all, we are a human church. Because the Church is both human and divine, it will have problems. Right now the problems seem to be of an insurmountable crisis, but the church – and we are the church – is facing the issues. Pope Benedict XVI stated that this deeply troubled Church needs a firm hand at the helm. We must continue to pray for a strong, spiritual head of the Catholic Church who will be guided by the Holy Spirit and compassionately listen to voices of conservatives and progressives. On the bottom of page 3 of this week’s bulletin, I have included “Prayer For The New Holy Father” and ask that you consider using this prayer from the beginning of the conclave until the election of the next Holy Father. I wish you continued blessings throughout your Lenten journey, Fr. Bill

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote A si usted se pregunta "¿Cuál es el tema que me gustaría más para la dirección del próximo papa?" ¿cuál sería la respuesta?      

Bill Pg. 7
