EDITORS NOTE

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hello to the Up and Coming and Already evolved GentlemenVIP! We are here! Something refreshing and classy towards all ethnic women of color for the ethnic man to enjoy tastefully. In our societies media today, ethnic men are always being portrayed as womanizers or “thugs” that only call women bitches, hoes and using them for their bodies. Although this may be true in some facets of our society, I believe that those that take that route use it only as a “means to an end” (for the money). GentlemenVIP thinks that most men have respect for women anyway, simply due to the fact of the percentage of single-parent female homes. A lot of our ethnic men are being brought up in homes like this, by women and have that basic instinct to respect them. GentlemenVIP is here to help turn these gentlemen into GentlemenVIP within all facets of their lives, from the cradle to the grave in whether it’s play, politics, fashion, religion, cars, sports and of course beautiful women. We will be giving very pertinent information to help men be savvy and stand-up in any situation without having to play yourself out, which is something a lot of men may think what a gentlemen is all about. I hope as men and possibly some women look and read through our pages, that it gives someone if just one person a new found love for themselves as well as the women around them. So engage yourself in something new and indulge yourself on the way. Remember to “Always be Aware of Your Surroundings” meaning to watch out for yourself and others around you and handle yourself accordingly in the GentlemenVIP’s way! A GentlemenVIP’s Gentlemen, Mr. Suave

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW AS MEN

GENTLEMEN 101 CODE OF HONOR Some people always seem to do the right thing. No matter what the situation, they seem to figure out the correct course of action. These guys are consistent almost to a fault. The reason they are so consistent is because they have a code of honor. Men are often erratic in their actions because they do not have a code of honor. A code of honor is a systematic set of rules or laws that a man lives by. His code may be personal or inherited from his organization. A true man has a set of codes and lives by its laws religiously. His laws become nearly as rigid as the laws of nature. If you wrong a man of honor, you can be sure he will punish you, just as gravity always pulls the apple to the ground when it falls from the tree. Here are five laws that should be part of your code of honor. LAW 1: Never break your code of honor The first and most important law is that you may never break the code under any circumstance. You’ve figured out the rules of the game so follow them without failure. If you going live by them don’t fucking break them. Your words and actions are what people respect, so if you practice what you preach you shouldn’t have any problems in breaking the codes. LAW 2: Respect yourself Your code of honor must be based on self-respect and respect of others that follow the same code. When you break the code, you disrespect yourself and all the men that live by it. If you are a Hustler, you should always uphold the laws of the streets. If you break the law, you are without honor and are looked at as a man without respect a “chump” lose all the credit you demand from the streets. LAW 3: Respect fellow warriors When you meet someone that is your “kind of guy,” it is usually because he lives by the same code that you do. You may not realize this, but it happens more often than most think. This means to show respect when it is due. Two boxers may talk trash and even hate each other, but if they fight 12 bloody rounds to a draw, they may still not like each other; however, they will shake hands (or touch gloves), look each other in the eyes, and their mutual respect becomes obvious. Thus, they show a much stronger respect among themselves than they would to any “outsider.” They understand what it means to live by their code of battle.

8

LAW 5: Death is honorable Be willing to die for your code. My business was able to operate and grow strong because the men of honor (back in the day anyway) would take their punishment if they broke our code or if they got caught. They were willing to pay the price to live the life. They lived by the code in good times or bad. If you have the choice of breaking the code or dying, then you should choose death. There is no life without honor and once you break your code, you have no honor and no life, which means you might as well be dead. Thus, if you are going to bite the bullet, do so with honor. BREAKING THE CODE There you have it gentlemen, a code of honor can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. Either way, use these five laws as the basis of your code and you’ll be off to a good start.

LAW 4: Respect the business

“Watch your back” means don’t trust anyone. You never know all the angles and the person you least expect to take you out is the one that gets you in most cases.

Sometimes the game goes your way and sometimes it beats you down, but at all times you should respect the game. To respect it means you will think clearly, and be able to work and win. If you take the game for granted, it’ll clean you out faster than you can say “boo.” If you don’t take care of business, then business will take care of you. Business is business not a hustle. Don’t ever forget it.

“Keep your noses clean” literally means don’t use cocaine or other similar drugs. Once you start powdering your nose, it’s only a matter of time before you get rubbed out hard, fast and painfully. I mean it more in the sense of not taking any drugs, or doing things that will impair your judgment and cause you to make bad moves (which can get you hurt bad).

RELATIONSHIP TIPS FOR MEN YOUR WOMAN WILL LOVE

2. You Can Never Go Wrong with Flowers

There are so many relationships which ultimately end in breakups these days. It is so prevalent at times that we simply feel that relationships are made to be broken. However, deep down inside we know that that this is not true. There are many relationships worth keeping and many women we simply cannot allow ourselves to lose. If you are currently in a relationship, your next task is to make that relationship last. If you take serious efforts to make that relationship stronger, making it last will be the easy part. If you have a woman in your life that you cannot bear to be without, the following will provide you with helpful tips to make your woman fall in love with you all over again. 1. Appreciate Her More As you may have noticed, women need and want constant appreciation. Whether it is brought on by simple insecurity or is simply in their nature, it is up to you to give them what they need. Dating women entails offering compliments that may range from honest-to-goodness comments all the way to small white lies. If you love that woman in your life, you have to tell her so and list the many things that you love about her.

10

Flowers are definitely a girl’s best friend. This may sound cliché but giving your loved one flowers will provide favorable results at least 90% of the time. In fact, most women simply cannot resist a man who sends them flowers. Not all men understand this love for flowers however most women have it. It is even more special to the woman when she receives flowers for no particular reason at all. Therefore, do not only send flowers on special occasions and to apologize. Send flowers simply to put a smile on her face. As a backup plan, remember that chocolates are a good nooccasion gift as well. 3. Try to Keep Arguments to a Minimum It is also important to keep arguments to a minimum. Sometimes you will find that giving into a woman’s whims in order to avoid an argument is a good move as well. Staying out of arguments can mean a long and happy relationship. Women are usually good at apologizing if they find they do something wrong however try not to pursue arguments simply to get this apology. You may receive it at a later time and by keeping out of arguments it will be better for all parties involved in the long run. 4. Make Her Happy Lastly, whatever it takes, make your woman happy. Give her lots of love, care, sincerity and attention. A little money for shopping isn’t such a bad idea either

BRIDGING THE GAP

DAD IT'S TIME FOR SCHOOL: Ways to Make It Easier For a Single Dad with Kids in School

There’s all this talk about the struggles of single mothers. I’m a single father. Am I the only one? There’s gotta be other men out there who have taken on the responsibility of being a single father. Once upon a time, I was sleeping with this woman and we had a baby. Now at this time, I choose not to be with that woman. I also am not in a place where I want to marry and wife up some other woman. I’m not gay. I’m smart. I make money. I got my own crib…and a daughter. Now I ask, what about the single dad?

12

Focus on these 5 things: 1. Communicate with the teacher: If you don’t feel like talking, send a text (they like that and it’s really direct), an email, a voice mail, or a note through the kid. Say hello, or mention that the kid isn’t feeling well today so take it easy. 2. Meet the teachers: Just making that connection makes your kid think that you really care about their world, school. It also makes “them” think you care about their world. 3. Talk to you child about school. Ask them what classes they have, who the teacher is, what are they learning, how many kids are in the class, where do they sit, do they like the class (why?), is it easy/just right/hard, do they have friends in the class, where do they sit?

My daughter is in 7th grade. In my time I have observed a trick, tried it, and everything is a lot easier. Not gone, but easier to handle.

4. Ask them who their friends are: This matters because friends will influence your child’s decisions just like they do ours.

School. The school is full of so much help. It is someone’s job in every school to make sure I have the things I need for “Baby Girl”. Sometimes, I feel like I don’t want to ask “them” (the teachers, guidance counselors, and principals) because I remember how it was when I was in school. If I had to talk to any of them folks, it meant I was in trouble. But as a parent…it’s a totally different ball game. THEY WORK FOR ME! That’s right, now they work to help me and make it easier so that I am a happy customer. It’s called service. So, I’m using this service, this free service, and I will continue to use this free service.

5. Encourage your child to get involved in school activities and then go to some of them. Be seen by the staff at the school and your child. Basically, get involved in your child’s world. We take them out to eat, to church, we sit at home and chill together, we cook, etc. But that is your world together. You have your own life outside of your kid’s (for good reason I’m sure). Get into their world. Use the school to help you get connected. Know what is going on and it will be easier to predict when a bump is up ahead, maybe you can go around it together instead of bumping into it or crashing on the other side.

RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHIES

7 WAYS TO SERVE GOD: Through Serving Others By Moe Arora To serve God is to serve others and is the greatest form of charity: the pure love of Christ. Jesus Christ said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34). This list gives 7 ways in which we can serve God by serving others. 1. Serve God through Your Family: To serve God starts with serving in our families. Daily we work, clean, love, support, listen to, teach, and endlessly give of ourselves to the members of our family. We may often feel overwhelmed with all that we must do. “The key... is to know and understand your own capabilities and limitations and then to pace yourself, allocating and prioritizing your time, your attention, and your resources to wisely help others, including your family. As we lovingly give of ourselves to our family, and serve them with hearts full of love, our acts will also be counted as service to God. 2. Give Tithes and Offerings One of the ways we can serve God is by helping his children, our brothers and sisters, through paying a tithing and a generous fast offering. Money from tithing is used to build God’s kingdom upon the earth. Contributing financially to God’s work is a great way to serve God. Money from fast offerings is directly used to help the hungry, thirsty, naked, stranger, sick, and afflicted (see Matt 25:34-36) both those locally and world wide. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has helped millions of people through their amazing humanitarian efforts. All this service has only been possible through both the financial and physical support of many volunteer as people serve God by serving their fellowman. 3. Volunteer in Your Community There are countless ways to serve God by serving in your community. From donating blood (or just volunteering at the Red Cross) to adopting a highway, your local community has great need for your time and efforts. President Spencer W. Kimball counseled us to be careful not to select causes whose primary focus is selfish: “When you select causes to devote your time and talents and treasure to, be careful to select good causes... which will produce much joy and happiness for you and for those you serve”. You can easily become involved in your community; it only takes a little effort to contact a local group, charity, or other community program. 4. Home and Visiting Teaching For members of the Church of Jesus Christ, visiting each other through the Home and Visiting teaching programs is a vital way we have been asked to serve God by caring for one another. “Home teaching opportunities provide a means by which an important aspect of character may be developed: love of service above self. We become more like the Savior, who has challenged us to emulate His example: ‘What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am’ (3 Ne. 27:27)...” As we give of ourselves in the service of God and others we will be greatly blessed. 5. Donate Clothing and Other Goods All throughout the world there are places to donate your unused clothing, shoes, dishes, blankets/quilts, toys, furniture, books, and other items. Generously giving of these items to help others is an easy way to serve God and declutter your home at the same time.

14

When preparing those things you are going to donate it is always appreciated if you only give those items that are clean and in working order. Donating dirty, broken, or useless items is less effective and takes precious time from volunteers and other workers as they sort and organize the items to be distributed or sold to others. Stores that resell donated items usually offer much needed jobs to the less fortunate which is another excellent form of service. 6. Be a Friend One of the simplest and easiest ways to serve God and others is by befriending one another. “As we take the time to serve and be friendly, we’ll not only support others but also build a network of support for ourselves. Make others feel at home, and soon you’ll feel at home...” “Kindness is the essence of greatness and the fundamental characteristic of the noblest men and women I have known. Kindness is a passport that opens doors and fashions friends. It softens hearts and molds relationships that can last lifetimes”. Who doesn’t love and need friends? Let’s make a new friend today! 7. Serve God by Serving Children So many children and teenagers need our love- and we can give it! There are many programs to become involved with helping children and you can easily become a school or library volunteer. Imagine what the Savior “would do for our children if he were here. The Savior’s example... [applies] to all of us—whether we love and serve children in our families, as neighbors or friends, or at church. Children belong to all of us”. “But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God”(Luke 18:16). Jesus Christ loves children and so too should we love and serve them.

BLACK INC.

CODES OF GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE By Lee Green from black business space on ning.com

Centuries ago, Aesop (the famous Black Greek philosopher), provided us with a compelling parable that instructs as well as warns us about how to do business. Its message could not be timelier: The fable recalls the story of a poor farmer who discovers in the nest of his goose a shining golden egg. He is suspicious, and starts to discard the egg, but then decides to have it appraised to determine its worth. He discovers the egg is pure gold! The farmer is overwhelmed with his good fortune. He becomes even more excited when he finds that each day, as he visits the nest, there is a new egg. Imagine his excitement as day after day he awakens to the thrill of finding a new egg. It all seems too good to be true. However, the farmer becomes wealthy beyond belief. Then, with his newfound wealth, comes greed and impatience. Instead of waiting for each day to pass, he decides to get all of the eggs at once. He greedily opens the goose, only to find that it is empty. Not only are there no eggs, but now there will never be anymore. He has killed “the goose that laid the golden eggs.” For us, “Black Business Networking” is that goose. As black entrepreneurs we have an enormous capacity to help black people universally achieve economic health and financial freedom. However, with that incredible opportunity comes a significant responsibility. We have to do business THE RIGHT WAY! If we do, we ensure continued freedom and prosperity for everyone. For that reason, the National Black Business Trade Association established “Codes of Good Business Practice”. These Codes have been adopted in order to define the duties, responsibilities and rights of members among themselves, the black community, and the public in general as well as with the National Black Business Trade Association, Inc. (NBBTA) office and staff. The purpose is to develop relationships which are more conducive to successful business practices, financial and community development, as well as the advancement of African peoples worldwide. While at the same time, maintaining the right of each member to engage in a free and independent business enterprise. CODE 1: Treat your customers, suppliers, employees, contractors, prospects and public as you would want to be treated. We are dedicated to the principle that if “you help enough people get what they want out of life, you will automatically get all you want out of life”. Service to others will always return great dividends. It’s called, “synergy”. People working together in harmony and cooperation will accomplish much more than the same number of people working separately.

CODE 2: Each of us is an attitude away from greatness. Each of us is unique and special, with our own set of beliefs, talents, strengths, abilities, perceptions and values. Each of us is a product of our lifetime experiences. We base our decisions and actions upon these experiences. Each person has a unique contribution in life - each of us has innate worth and value. An attitude of total unconditional acceptance of others will cause each of us to allow for differences and help eliminate prejudice and judgmental thinking. By allowing another his own opinions and actions, individuals actually enhance their own self-esteem. We seek first to understand and then be understood. CODE 3: The power to change your life is within your reach. We believe that each individual has the God-given right and responsibility to live freely. Each, as a mature, adult business person, must be given the right to operate independently and be allowed the freedom to succeed or fail based upon individual efforts and abilities. We are each responsible for our own well-being and growth - personally and financially. We seek to be compensated in the marketplace in direct portion to the value we bring to the marketplace. CODE 4: What we do, we do for our children (future generations). The proper raising and education of our children is our collective responsibility. In addition to all else, we must teach them the importance of ownership, equity participation, international economic reciprocity and entrepreneurship as alternatives to laboring in the job market. We must lead by example, encouraging the creative process in all, bringing others along as we grow. CODE 5: We each have the responsibility to deal with openness, honesty, and kindness in business and in life - to cause the best results possible. Once a difficulty or problem exists, the most effective manner to correct it is to go back to the root cause of the problem and treat that - not just superficially treating the effect. Following the ancient principle of “whatsoever you sow, so shall you reap!” we acknowledge that each of us will reap exactly what we give out. Each of us will reap a life harvest - the size will depend upon our generosity at planting time, the quality will depend upon our diligence to tend the crop and the kind will depend upon the kind of seed we’ve sown. Eventually all our thoughts, words, actions and attitudes will come back to us. The principles exist that those dealing honestly, fairly and with integrity will find success, friendships and ultimately - happiness and peace. CODE 6: One who masters the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both. These Codes reflect the positive nature of our mission and our desire to be of service to black people throughout the world. If you look closely, you will notice that the first code really is a summation of all that follows. Treat your customers, suppliers, employees, contractors, prospects and public as you would want to be treated. We are dedicated to the principle that if “you help enough people get what they want out of life, you will automatically get all you want out of life”. Together, I believe we can fight the universal tendencies toward greed, negativity and impatience. I believe we can do business the old-fashioned way, with integrity and honesty. If we conduct our business THE RIGHT WAY, the goose will be healthy and our mutual abundance will be unmeasured. In the end, the only way to do good is to be good.

BUSINESS ADVICE

BUSINESS ADVICE

HOW TO ASK FOR A RAISE By Armando Gomez

Learn how to ask for a raise and live the life you’ve dreamed. There are many characteristics that make us appreciate one specific job over another. Many times it’s the environment and staff, but it’s more often the salary that helps us choose one position over another. That’s why, when a job loses its appeal, getting a raise might revive your motivation and makes you want to get up in the morning for a fresh day of work. There are, however many other aspects that come into play when preparing to get a raise. Read on and learn how to ask for a raise properly. What’s the going rate? If you’re trying to figure out how to ask for a raise, the first thing you need to understand is the current market rate. If you are a smallbusiness consultant for example, it may be difficult to track this information since the bulk of the work is done on a contract-to-contract basis and rates vary depending on the level of knowledge required. More straight forward positions, such as a financial analyst work on an hourly wage and the information is a lot easier to research. This part of the whole process requires a little elbow grease, as the employee must do research to find out as much as he can about his position in the job market, the going salary, compensation packages, contract specifics, long-term advancement, and bonuses. There are a few helpful sites out there for comparative salary data, but we specifically like WageWeb.com and PayScale.com since they both offer a simplified listing of jobs and positions in various fields. If you work with computers and information systems, a good source for information is DataMasters.com. This site offers many references that are separated by geographical areas in the U.S. and a cost of living calculator. Much of the available information on the internet deals with annual salary, while information regarding packages and bonuses is less readily accessible. Finding information of this nature requires a more skillful approach and you will probably need to ask coworkers or those in the field that you’re researching. Ask Around While it may not be representative of your industry, the best pertinent information can be found in your own workplace. So, while you’re navigating how to ask for a raise, keep in mind that you should arm yourself with salary information from your own office and the rest of the world. While you gather information and prepare to ask for a raise you could ask a coworker how much he/she makes (be careful though, this is against company policies at some companies and could get you terminated), but the person will often not want to divulge his/her annual salary anyway. Instead, he/she may volunteer a hint about how much others make in the company. One of the best ways to find out this information is to have a friend in payroll. For that, you’ll need to maintain friendships in the workplace. Furthermore, there are many benefits like stock options and bonuses that can add to the power of a paycheck, which is valuable information to know when first learning how to ask for a raise.

Stock Options and Bonuses The dollar amount of a paycheck might not be all that matters in the overall compensation. When you put aside the actual money paid to you, you are left with benefits and stock options that can potentially make you quite comfortable in the future. Settling for a compensation package means exactly that -- compensation. The best time to negotiate is right at the beginning,  when you are hired. Do your research, as it’s a lot easier to negotiate when you show that you know what you’re worth, that you know the value of a dollar and that you take your professional career seriously. Candidates increasingly request bonuses, work-at-home arrangements and extra vacation packages. Everything isn’t always peachy. While it might be possible to get a good deal, you may have to push for a great one. Compensatory and merit raises are quite low these days, as salary caps and other bureaucratic mechanisms conspire to keep payrolls from inflating. It takes some active negotiation skills and a lot of backbone to start a negotiation session, and you must know what you’re worth before you start pushing for more. Know Your Worth The primary thing to remember before starting any kind of negotiation or even a conversation with your boss about a possible raise is to know what you have to show for it. This means that individuals have to know their self-worth and that doesn’t just mean how much you make, it also means whether you deserve all the zeros on that check or not. Sometimes a worker doesn’t always deserve their salary level. Efficiently doing your tasks will reinforce your place within the company because of your loyalty, but it will also make you a necessity in the working process. Not only will it make the work more interesting for the person, but it will also push him to do his best and motivate him day after day. Raising The Bar There you have it, a simple checklist to getting better compensation from your employer. The only thing left for you to do is to convince or better yet, show your employer that you deserve it. Nothing in life is worth having, if it is easily begotten. Remember these tips even as you go through life and you will be okay.

PERSONAL FINANCE Online Banking

By Terence Channon

Even if you bank at a small regional bank, you likely have free access to your account information online. Banks offer services online both to provide a better customer experience, and, most importantly, because these services allow the bank to do its job more efficiently. You probably already take advantage of online banking to pay your bills electronically and to periodically transfer money into your savings account (good budget suggestion), but there are many other things you can do with online banking, and we’ve compiled a list to help you make the most of it. Schedule Payments If you spend a little more time looking at bill payment options, you’ll find you can automatically schedule payments and even specify the number of payments you have remaining, all through online banking. In terms of making sure your monthly payments get there on time, most online payment services are set up to let you specify the date of delivery. This delivery date often comes with a guarantee that the payment will be delivered by that date to make sure that your account doesn’t go into the red. Also, some national payees will be tied directly into the online banking interface, which can mean the payment can be applied instantly or take just one to two business days to be delivered, rather than five to seven. Account Transfers Transferring money between your checking and savings accounts is one of the first things you can do with online banking. For advanced online banking users, you may want to do some research to see which other electronic payments are offered by your bank, particularly when it comes to outside accounts. For example, some banking solutions allow you to e-mail money to friends or family, or even send money via a cell phone. It may also be possible to initiate wire transfers to yourself or third parties simply by filling out a form online and then confirming via an e-mail. More practical activities may include linking to your brokerage account or IRA account and quickly moving money into these venues without the hassle of writing a check, mailing it in and waiting for it to clear.

20

Order Supplies If you browse through your online banking interface, you will find that you may not even have to step inside a branch to order the supplies you need. Most banks will let you order things like deposit slips, checks, additional debit cards, and even old statement copies online. In many cases, they’ll send you the supplies at no charge. It might take a couple of extra days to get these items in the mail, but it sure beats trying to make it to the bank before closing hours and waiting in line. Download Transactions If you’re up to speed with your online banking, you should be using a software program like Quicken or Mint.com to monitor your finances and help you budget. Most financial institutions are directly tied to these software programs and it’s very easy to have Quicken automatically update your account balances and transactions every day. If you’re just getting one of these software programs, you should be able to export the data from your online bank account, and it should come out in a format that can easily be imported into your new program. Automatic transaction downloading makes reconciling a breeze -- as every charge is already posted and included, as are the proper date ranges. Additionally, if you’re looking for a transaction or want to get a summary of activity for a given period of time or review spending in specific categories, you can often specify these search criteria. Even if you can’t filter by certain items, you can export the data into an Excel spreadsheet that is relatively easy to manipulate.   Banking in the Digital Age The next time you login to your online banking account, take a few extra moments to browse through all of the links and sections within the interface. You should quickly find your bank offers you access to more services online than you originally knew about, services that could make your life a whole lot easier if you use them properly. And as a little F.Y.I., depending on the bank you probably can dispute certain transactions.

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MARKETING Marketing Is Compound Interest

Have you ever been asked this question: If you were offered (a) $1000 a day for 30 days, or (b) a Penny on day 1, two pennies on day 2, four pennies on day 3, and so on, doubling the amount everyday for 30 days, which would you take? For those that know the answer, you know what I am talking about, for those that don’t, you’ll have to read on to find out. The main problem with marketing especially for small businesses is applying patience and consistency. Now this in itself has its setback. Recently, some of you have shared with me the problems that you are facing in your marketing and knowing where to advertise was one of the issues. Advertising is perhaps the most expensive way to market your business with the least guaranteed results. This means that if you are spending so much money on advertising then after a short amount of time you run out of money and then it’s good-bye to advertising. Below are a few tips that I would strongly recommend: # 1. Find cost effective ways that gets your brand name, service or product out there. If you are a service business, a very cost effective way to market yourself is by writing articles. I know I have mentioned this in my 10 Tips but I don’t think we know the power of having something written in print or on the internet that can work for you even while you sleep. Give yourself a goal to write maybe one or two articles a month. When you read books, listen to the news etc make notes and find out what people are interested in and look for ways that this can fit into the service you provide. # 2. Eliminate the least effective methods you are using and focus on what works. The moment you notice that a marketing method isn’t working, adapt it; if it still isn’t yielding any results, then stop it. You can then either focus more energy and time on the most effective methods or you can explore by trying out other methods. I have really got to be honest with you: there are only 6 to 7 major ways to market yourself - Direct Contact, Networking, Public Speaking, Writing, Promotional Events and Advertising - in most cases, whatever you are doing at the moment will fall under one of these topics. So focus on 2 or 3 of these so that you don’t spread yourself out too thin, stay with it for sometime and see the results! It will pay off a lot more than changing too soon. # 3. Focus on only marketing where you’ll find your target market. This is another area I see many making big mistakes. If you carry a bucket of water through a village were there is water in abundance no one will take any notice of you, however, carry that same bucket of water through the desert, someone might even want to exchange all his gold for it! I am sure you catch what I am saying. If you find out where your potential market exists, what they read, where they go etc and you only market your services in those areas, you are more likely to be effective than if you advertised in your local evening newspaper which is very general. Do you know were to find your potential clients? It works like magic, in fact they will say, “where have you been, I have been looking for your service or product”.

# 4. Remember that people need to hear your message consistently. When I was in sales, I was always astonished when I’d call back a potential client that was previously very abrupt with me on the phone a few times and now was suddenly eager to know more about what I had to offer. I learned something really important about people. They need to hear your message consistently because when they are finally ready to buy your services you want them to come to you. How can you do this? Develop a system for follow up, maybe you’ve heard of the acronym Save Your Self Time & Money; imagine if you had a system that enabled you to keep in touch with every person you’ve met at a networking event, meeting, course, etc. Well, that should be your goal, i.e. to build a huge contact list so that you can be in touch with them frequently enough so that they don’t forget you. You can do this via email. # 5. You’ve got to give before you receive. Buying is an emotional thing; sometimes we forget that people will buy when they are in the right mood, or when they now need your service or product. Take as an example the retail shop that treats all it’s potential customers with extra care whether you buy or not - when this same potential customer is in need of retail therapy she will more likely go to where she was treated well. Marketing is everything you can do for that customer before they finally decide to go with you. And in today’s society, people expect a lot up front. The problem with small business owners is that they are afraid of giving away too much and the customer/client still does not end up buying from them. I want to tell you never to worry about that, word of mouth is a very powerful method of marketing and I don’t think it would ever fade away. Therefore, if you are known to give things away for free, people are more likely to talk about you! That is what marketing is all about you’ve got people checking your website to download your free article, you got people coming into your store because it’s buy one and get the next one free - With a good plan these people that have come to you for the free offer can soon be converted into clients/customers and, might even be some of your best ones. The accumulated result of you following these principles is that at some point your business will explode with clients. I think in today’s world, we are spoilt because we expect everything to be instant; we have instant coffee, microwave food etc. So we expect instant return on our Marketing Investments. Lets go back to the question I asked at the beginning: If you were offered (a) £1000 a day for 30 days, or (b) a penny on day 1, two pennies on day 2, four pennies on day 3, and so on, doubling the amount everyday for 30 days, which would you take? If you answered that you’ll take the $1,000 then you’ll end up with $30,000 which you might say isn’t bad. However, the person that decided to take the penny would end up with $10, 737, 418.23 by day 30! Yes over 10 and a half million. This is the power of compound interest. So even if all you were doing at the moment was collecting a few email addresses, this could be your ticket to your fortune in the near future. Marketing is compound interest!

JUDICIAL AND SOCIAL POLITICS

ARGUMENTS AGAINST UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE IN AMERICA By Tim Meyers The prospect of universal healthcare in America brings out a great deal of arguments from both sides of the political spectrum. I thought I’d take a closer look at some of these arguments. While it might be a good idea to take a closer look at each one individually, the purpose of this article is to provide an overview.

It is generally believed in a free market society that less government involvement produces multiple competing organizations which are theoretically supposed to in turn produce lower costs and increased innovation. This is supposed to result in a better, more affordable end product for the consumer.

Civilized nations across the globe utilize various forms of universal or nationalized healthcare insurance programs. Germany, the first country to implement national healthcare, did so in the 1880’s, decades before America would see the serious development of any kind of health insurance at all.

When the “end-product” is not a matter of life and death, this model generally works quite well. Even so, there is a fairly large group of Americans who are perfectly satisfied with their healthcare insurance the way it is. This group consists primarily of people whose health insurance premiums are subsidized by their employers, and who have never faced a serious illness - yet, that is. As long as these people stay relatively healthy, and don’t face premium payments that consume a large percentage of their income, this group will remain satisfied with things the way they are.

All of these national healthcare systems in other countries have their own unique ways of accomplishing the goal of universal healthcare. Some have banned private healthcare insurance companies altogether. In other countries, the goal of universal coverage is met through legislation and regulation of the healthcare companies, and by requiring citizens to enroll in one way or another. Other countries allow private insurance companies to exist as competi tion, or as supplementation to the national plans to provide additional coverage. Additionally private insurance carriers act in some nations in a complimentary manner to cover such medical services which are not covered under the governments’ plans, such as cosmetic treatments. While, there are many different ways of accomplishing universal healthcare, it is clear that doing so has many important benefits to the medical and financial well-being of the citizens of these nations. Countries with universal healthcare plans generally experience significantly lower infant mortality rates, longer life spans, and a greatly reduced per capita healthcare cost. The general health of the nation as a whole is improved by the prevention of epidemics. Still, many opponents of universal healthcare in America are not convinced. Indeed, some are adamantly opposed, and exhibit an extreme amount of anger at the very thought of either a publicly funded plan, or government regulation of for-profit healthcare corporations. While many of their stated reasons for this fierce opposition are based obviously on misunderstandings of the specific plans the United States Congress is now considering, some of their arguments are a bit more reasonable.

However, there are also a great deal of people who face rising premiums which increasingly eat up larger percentages of their income. For this group of people, the free market model isn’t working so well. While premiums are rising across the board, and on average have doubled over the last decade, sometimes even higher raises in premium are occurring, due to such things as simply having a coworker with an ill child, which thus produces higher rates for that entire company. Other people have experienced the frustrating reality of paying their premiums for years only to discover when they or a covered family member become ill that the insurance provider will not cover the necessary treatments. And once the primary insured, or the spouse or a covered dependent becomes seriously ill, increased premium rates can often become unsustainable, and the insurance irreplaceable due to industry wide preexisting condition clauses. In addition to high premiums, there are large annual deductibles, and caps on how much an insurer will insure you for yearly, and over the course of your lifetime. In the cases of serious illness, these above average premiums, yearly deductibles and over the cap out of pocket expenses can bankrupt a family, and still leave them incapable of funding necessary treatment.

The Free Market Argument

So what the free-market provides us with is usually a very satisfactory insurance program as long as your need for it isn’t very strong. Establishing Universal Healthcare

One of the main reasons for opposition to universal healthcare is the argument of the effectiveness of free markets at providing better results and cost controls.

I  discussed briefly in my opening the fact that there are many different ways of achieving universal healthcare. The trick for each society is to discover what works for them, and what doesn’t. Though many economic and healthcare experts believe that the single payer system is the most efficient, self sustainable and the best option for us in America, many Americans remain opposed to the concept. In light of that, for us, other options are being considered instead.  It is important to note that it is believed that a great deal of the fear people have concerning a single payer system is due to propaganda put forth both discreetly and overtly by healthcare insurance lobbying firms whose employers would like things to remain the way they are. Currently congress is working on hammering out a compromise, but this effort is hampered by a still misinformed public, politics as usual,  and the fact that at least some of the members of congress may be in the pockets of the healthcare insurance industry.

IS HEALTHCARE A BASIC RIGHT OR IS IT A PRIVELEDGE By RK Henry The side of the health care professional. The health care industry is a business. The bottom line is profit. Taking care of people is expensive. It is not the fault of Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, etc., that the cost of health care is rising. It is the insurance companies fault. The way items have to be itemized to even collect the going rate from an Insurance company is the cause and effect. From the side of the Patient. Please help me my child is dying. I live in America, what you mean I’m denied. I need medicine. True Story: A man enters a Walgreen’s. He goes to the back of the store to where the Pharmacy counter is located. He informs the Pharmacist that he has cancer and is in terrible pain. When the Pharmacist tried to calmly explain to the man that he was sorry and could do nothing for him, the cancer patient tells the Pharmacist he has a gun. The gun man told the pharmacist how he recently lost his insurance, since his former employer obligation to continue coverage on him had expired. Already thousands of dollars in debt, he could no longer get his medications. The gun man asked if everyone, except for the pharmacist, to leave the store. He then explained his intentions were not to harm anybody. He just needed something for the pain. When the employees made it out of the store, they swiftly called 911. In the meantime, the man demanded Oxycontin and Lorasapan. [Two common medications used in cancer hospice care. Oxycontin is for pain and Lorasapan is for vomiting after chemotherapy.] The pharmacist supplied the man with his demands and was released by the gun man. After a 15 minute stand off, where the man had his fingers pointed to his head to imply he might kill himself, the police gave him some room. The police watched the man take the necessary amount allowed the man for his condition. Once the man became more subdued and relaxed, the police immediately placed him in the ambulance to be taken to the Hospital. The man ended up in the Intensive Care Unit.

Where the news then said he was in critical condition. He’s dying from cancer. Apparently, this man’s only remaining option, was to become a ward of the county and state as an inmate, to live out the rest of his days without unbearable and horrific pain.  Now, you tell me because I want to know, is health care a right or a privilege in America?  Is this what you would want for a love one of yours or perhaps even you? I am not sure where I stand on this issue. Maybe I’m not wise enough to contemplate all the outcomes. My heart conflicts with the practical side of my mind. How can anyone let this man suffer? Why should he have to commit a crime to get the painkillers he needed? Is this what its come too? What can be done or should anything be done to fix this system? Many health care officials I meet think the health care system isn’t broken. So why fix it? In order to fix the system or not fix it, someone needs to decide if health care is a right or a privilege.

A homeless man with no health insurance, who is suffering from an overactive thyroid which causes the muscles behind his eye to swell, collects change on a subway platform in New York City.

THE IVY LEAGUE'S TALENTED TENTH ...Once Again, Kicks “Little Negroes” to the Curve By George Malik Al-Mahdi African American Opinion.com Isn’t it amazing how these PhD racial “experts” from the Ivy League elite are, in reality, so far removed from the very reality that they are supposed to understand? This Louis Gates lackey was supposed to STAND THE F*** UP FOR THE “LITTLE NIGGERS” UNDER THE RADAR, WHO HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO THEM DAILY! Hey, could you “important” Negroes STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR A CHANGE? THOSE OF US LIVING UNDER THE RADAR, THE OTHER “JENA SIX” FOLKS IN AMERIKKKA DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP. Louis Gate’s education is a wasted one. I’ll bet he’s never spent time talking to ANY brothers on a street corner. He’s read about them, talked about them, “studied” them, but basically lived a life FAR, FAR, FAR removed from their reality, both physically AND mentally. That’s why he wants to talk, while he should be itching to slap the living hell out of some ofay in a blue uniform! Talk? About what? Does this useful pacifist product of Martin King thinking believe that he just discovered that there are bigoted cops? “Attention all American Negroes, white cops have sworn to ‘serve and protect’, but many have lied to “serve and protect’.” Well Mr. Ivy league scholar, there are people like Lavena Johnson, Rodney King, the Scott Sisters, Eric Frimpong, Sean Bell, a forgotten New Orleans school teacher, an Oklahoma Paramedic, the Jena Six, Kathryn Johnston (92 year old great grandmother killed by rogue cops), George Jackson, Amadou Diallo, Abner Louima (who police ass f***ed with a broomstick), and “yours truly” that “discovered” this a LONG time ago. So, I won’t be listening to anything this weak-kneed pacifist, modern day Martin King has to say about anything. We can expect the Jesse Jacksons, Farrakhans, Cornel Wests, Tavis Smileys, Tom Joyners, Bill Cosby’s etc., etc., etc. to have some sort of useless talk-a-thon in the near future. Don’t worry about Oprah; there are still rich housewives in this country who need to be showered with new cars, so her schedule is booked. In the meantime

28

“Officer Charlie” will receive accolades. And if the woman who made the call is some “cute” blonde (sorry for the oxymoron), oh boy, talk about a book deal and spot on Fox News. It’s becoming a little hard for me to remain a fan of certain important people in Government. These Ivy League folks DO think they have a special corner on all things intellectual. Despite the grade inflation, good connections, and high-society affirmative action that gets people into these schools (didn’t George W. Bush go to Yale?); they only listen to one another behind closed doors. If I ever got hold of one of these uppity Toms in some public forum of debate, I’d make an example out of them that wouldn’t soon be forgotten. Now, put that in a crack pipe, and smoke yourself silly. So, there we have it. The “talented tenth” is showing just how talent deprived they really are. They are the ones that are handling things “stupidly” while settling this ordeal. Finally, at what point are you Negroes going to accept the fact that we’re living among a race of devils? The one’s that outwardly SEEM to like you are fond of you in the same way that an owner is fond of his/her pet Black Negro Labrador retriever. They love you pets, BUT THEY DON’T THINK OF YOUR FOOLISH BEHINDS AS EQUALS! What is it about being around this man, working with this man, messing with his trashy women, which you can’t get enough of? TALK TO ME! If whitey calls you a nigger, you’ll fight him. When the fight is over, however, you’ll revert to being guided by your same house Negro; useful jackass instincts that help preserve the “dumb nigger” stereotype in the first place. AM I THE ONLY SANE BLACK MAN ON THE PLANET? Talk to me! Well, there’s really no point in saying anything else. Either you get it or you don’t. If you “get it”, keep fighting the good fight. If you don’t get it, may your useless existence be hastened.

MOVING HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES INTO THE SILVER RIGHTS ERA By Akindele Akinyemi I was talking to some adults yesterday on the need for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Some feel that they have passed their time. If we look at history around the 19th and early to mid 20th century, there was no question about it. At the peek of segregation and discrimination in the United States this form of hate was the order of the day and it stood in the way of progress. Is that still the case today? If so, do we even care? Every time you turn around, we are always being solicited for money by HBCUs because they are in economic distress. Where does the free market come into play? There is STILL a need for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. However, the way we run and support these institutions need to change for the better. If you take a look at the Catholics they support Georgetown and Notre Dame. The Mormons support BYU. The Seventh Day Adventists support Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. The Lutherans-Missouri Synod support Concordia University. Most White Americans support and give back to the public institution they graduated from. However, when it comes to Blacks in this country we do not support our own institutions. After all, here in Detroit, most of the businesses are owned and operated by Arabs and Chaldeans even thought Blacks make up 90% of the total population in our city. However, HBCUs can serve as an incubator to develop 21st century leadership through a silver rights perspective. The main problem is that we still have HBCU presidents that operate on a 20th century civil rights perspective. For example, why do we continue to beg the federal government for money to run OUR institutions? This is OUR responsibility to fund and manage first. Our ways of innovation must be creative. An example of innovation for these HBCUs is creating a social business incubator that will help divert funding to the HBCU of our choice. A social business is one which aims to be financially self-sufficient, if not profitable, in its pursuit of a social, ethical or environmental goal. Speaking of social business HBCUs do not offer social entrepreneurship programs to help eradicate poverty in our community. Our way of thinking must change and our way of doing business must be global. For private HBCUs like Howard and Morehouse we have not done a good job in holding our faith based and non-profit communities accountable for not supporting quality education in these HBCUs. The major fund we have for the HBCUs is the United Negro College Fund. I dislike the term “negro because it is outdated. Again, this is the Silver Rights Movement not the Civil Rights Movement. Our way of thinking must change and our way of doing business must be global. We need more than just the UNCF and Coca-Cola giving out scholarships to poor Blacks going to a HBCU. We need public-private partnerships working on improving the financial status of these HBCUs, creating a financial mechanism that will bring in billions to these universities by developing new global initiatives that will place these HBCUs in direct competition with other traditional colleges and universities. The K-12 educational program at the HBCUs must be different also. They should offer teacher certifications in areas such as African-American History (which should not be looked upon as an elective), financial literacy and physiology to go into the most distressed urban areas to prepare our children for the 21st century. In a silver rights perspective we are in the business of generating wealth on these HBCUs by developing challenging programs, curriculums, and research facilities that will prepare our students in the 21st century. Some HBCUs are already doing this such as Tennessee State University. HBCUs serve as the custodians of the record of the struggle of Black people in this country to achieve the very highest levels of contribution to our society. There are many ways to ensure these institutions are preserved. However, American society has written off HBCUs as irrelevant. More importantly, Black people have written off HBCUs off their list as well. This is why it is important to know your history before you write anything off. These HBCUs can very well be the change agent in urban communities across America. HBCUs must be brought up to date. Central Michigan University and University of Michigan have satellite across the State of Michigan. They have numerous campuses where working people with families can go and take night classes. HBCUs need to do the same. I do not understand why our Black colleges do not set up satellite schools in urban areas across Michigan where it is affordable and students can receive one-one attention? Flint, Michigan is a prime example of a community that needs to be turned around. We have people here in Detroit applauding Detroit Public School Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb for trying to steer the district in the right direction. However, there is a Robert Bobb in every urban school district in Michigan. Flint has one too. The problem is he/she has not shown up yet in that community but they exist. What that urban area needs is innovation. For decades, Flint has been dependent on the automotive industry (General Motors). Since that ship has passed the city needs a new and diverse economy to move it forward again. Part of the transformation process is to revamp its educational core. If the educational system does not work then the community dies. How does Flint restore itself to glory?

JUDICIAL AND SOCIAL POLITICS

You have to look at new ways of becoming creative with the educational system there. Establishing a counterculture to combat the negative, prison culture that exists in the most depressed communities in Flint is a start. We have a film industry that is taking off in Michigan. We have green initiatives that are taking off. All of this cannot be done if we are not teaching our children in Flint financial literacy skills that will help shape them to become entrepreneurs. We have to create an educational system in Flint that will allow students to have a sense of ownership to their destiny. Where do Historically Black Colleges and Universities come into play in the City of Flint? They come into play by setting up satellite campuses in Flint that stresses cultural arts, green initiatives, health care, and entrepreneurship that will create more silver rights movers and shakers to restore balance in their community. The other thing with HBCUs is the fact that they should partner with both traditional and charter schools. How come a charter school cannot partner with Hampton University, Alabama State University or Morehouse/Spelman? This would be a great exchange. Students who are interested in attending these public/private HBCUs would have the first chance of doing so if they complete their four years in high school. At the same time, those who are preparing to graduate from a HBCU in education can do their student teaching and then get hired at the school where they partnered. Again, Flint and other urban areas in Michigan can lead the nation in this type of partnership. Urban conservatives should support this idea of HBCUs moving into the next step of education from a global initiative. As we know, education is global. Our HBCUs must be global, must be in the business of actively recruiting internationally from across the Diaspora and must be willing and able to provide a sense of high level of education for those who are coming from places such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Jamaica and other parts of the globe. HBCUs recruit and receive students from all over the planet BUT what I am sharing with you is preparing our students in silver rights to become change agents internationally. To produce wealth and rebuild families that has been decimated by the present day culture that promotes individualism. These students, for example, must be ready to tackle the global economic crisis. The United States is experiencing the highest U.S. unemployment rate in 25 years (8.9 percent), a record low housing construction rate, down 12.8 percent, and a loss of consumer and market confidence due to deteriorating personal finances. One revolutionary way of making HBCUs competitive is to institute a financial engineering program at the undergraduate and graduate level. Financial Engineering is a multidisciplinary field involving financial theory, the methods of engineering, the tools of mathematics and the practice of programming. Developing such a program at our HBCUs could provide a one-year full-time training in the application of engineering methodologies and quantitative methods to finance. This would be designed for students who wish to obtain positions in the securities, banking, and financial management and consulting industries, or as quantitative analysts in corporate treasury and finance departments of general manufacturing and service firms. These HBCUs are essential to the future of urban America. We cannot give up on them. They are core mechanisms waiting to move urban communities into the 21st century. Our outlook must be different on how these HBCUs can serve urban areas in Michigan and beyond. If we are talking about developing trade missions, imports and exports in and out of Africa and beyond then our HBCUs must be in the forefront of the discussion, development and execution of building wealth in both our rich and traditional educational history and future. *** After further research was done and after the article was submitted, GentlemenVIP would like to note that this has been happening for the past five years; HBCUs partnering with traditional charter schools.

ABORTION IS DESTROYING THE BLACK COMMUNITY By Janeth Rodriguez

The website www.blackgenocide.org, sponsored by the New Jersey chapter of the African-American pro-life group Life, Education and Resource Network (LEARN), notes, “With one-third of all abortions performed on Black women, the abortion industry has received over $4,000,000,000 (yes, billion) from the black community.”

Abortion is destroying black America. That’s the message a coalition of African-American pro-life activists took to the White House August 21st in an effort to persuade the Bush Administration that steps must be taken to stop the holocaust that since 1973 has “legally” taken the lives of over 44 million pre-born Americans — over a third of them African-American babies. The federal Centers for Disease Control estimates that around 1,500 black babies are aborted each day in the United States — or more than 500,000 children per year out of a community that already faces some steep obstacles. Elder Brian and Rev. Denise Walker, who operate a post-abortive healing ministry, joined the group of nearly 200 pastors, church leaders, and pro-life activists for the meeting with Bush officials. They told Pro-Family News that the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the U.S. amounted to a license to commit large-scale genocide on America’s black community. “What the slave ships couldn’t do to us, what slavery itself couldn’t do to us, and what the Ku Klux Klan couldn’t do to us, abortion has accomplished,” said Denise. She speaks from experience, having suffered through three abortions herself before she and Brian became Christians — and outspokenly pro-life. The Walkers pointed out that abortion is now the leading cause of death in the African-American community. “It causes four times as many deaths among blacks as the combined total of deaths caused by cancer, heart disease, AIDS, homicide, and accidents,” explained Denise. Brian noted that since 1973, some 14 million African-American children have been aborted. “While blacks comprise 12 percent of the nation’s population, they are the victims of 36 percent of all abortions,” he said. The decimation of the black community through abortion has come at the hands of abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, and the destruction is in part the consequence of the vision of Planned Parenthood’s founder Margaret Sanger. Through campaigns like the “Negro Project” Sanger and her compatriots in the birth control movement of the 1920s and ’30s convinced leaders in the black community that limiting black families through birth control would enable them to pull themselves out of poverty. Denise Explained, “Back in the 1930s, as it is today, the pulpit was the base of influence in the black community. The Negro Project was designed to use black clergy to sell the idea of birth control to the rest of the African-American community. Sanger convinced black pastors that the way for the black community, which was poor and largely uneducated, to get ahead was to limit their numbers.” Since the onset of legalized abortion in the 1970s, the stakes have been upped for the black community. “Under the guise of health-care and helping women and families, countless thousands of African-American babies are aborted each year,” said Brian. The location of the majority of the family planning “health clinics” is telling. “Seventy-eight percent of them are located in minority communities,” said Brian. “Their practices prove their mission. For abortion providers it’s all about business. Groups like Planned Parenthood get an inordinate amount of their funding via abortions, whether the patient herself pays, or it is subsidized by government funding. So their business plan is to locate their abortion clinics where they can have influence and grow their customer base.”

Denise warned that the huge numbers of abortions among black women is destroying the African-American community. “We are dying,” she said of the black community. “Our population growth is negative. We are not even replacing ourselves.” While many blacks consider the implementation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act as the final act of liberation for blacks in America, Denise pointed out that in 40 short years America’s abortion mentality has threatened that freedom, putting the African-American population at a numerical disadvantage. The Rev. Luke Robinson, a black pastor in Frederick, Maryland who helped organize the meeting between Bush officials and the black pro-life leaders, said the focus of the meeting was to persuade the Bush Administration to help educate the American public about how abortion is destroying the black community. He said that while Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers are busily killing babies indiscriminately across the nation, their campaign has been particularly devastating to the black community. “We find that the Hispanic birthrate is about 3.2, the white birthrate is about 2.2, and the African American birthrate is 0.9,” said Robinson, “which means the Hispanic community is tripling itself, the whites are doubling themselves, and the African-American community is not even replacing itself.” Brian Walker pointed out that the coalition that met with Bush Administration officials wasn’t looking for money or more government programs for the African-American community. “We just want Mr. Bush to use his position as president to raise this as an issue,” he said. “He has been such a staunch supporter of protecting the unborn, so he was the most natural leader to go to.” While the group was unable to meet personally with President Bush, the Walkers said the White House officials that met with them were very receptive. “We really just let them know what the problem is, that the Jesse Jacksons and the Al Sharptons do not speak for the black community,” she said. “We requested that the president would use his position to expose the genocidal effects of abortion on African-Americans, and to champion the cause of saving black children nationwide.” In a personal letter to President Bush, Denise said the issue for Black America is not “choice but genocide.” She explained that “most people, even in the black community, have no idea that abortion is the number one killer of African-Americans in the United States. Mr. President, we are asking you to use your bully pulpit to sound the alarm and help educate the public to the devastating genocidal effects of abortion within our community….” The Walkers said that Americans of all races and ethnicities must stand up and say “No More” to abortion. Denise said, “Our society cannot sustain itself if we do not allow children to be born.” NOTED UPDATE AT BOTTOM; SINCE NEW ADMINISTRATION. With the new administration, as with a good meal started well that can go bad with the touch of the temperature gage, everything started well. But it seems as though the Obama Administration was ready and willing to stop federal funding of institutions continuing to do abortions, until the Vatican jumped in with their say. Whoa! You know the old saying, “A Hurt Dog Will Holla!” So we will be following this for the people and keep you in the know.

JUDICIAL AND SOCIAL POLITICS

BLACK TALENT ROTS IN US PRISION National Black Chamber of Commerce Article Posted by Delores, Designer, AfriCreations.com

America became the leading nation in the world through its victories and leadership during World War II. Our 65 year reign is the shortest in history and we are a far way from having any kind of seniority in this position. We have made many mistakes along the way such as slavery, land theft and apartheid. The good news is that we are finding ways to correct our faults and move forward. There is one serious fault that we have yet to actually address. That is the medieval prison system that we have implemented and have actually enlarged over the last few decades. No other nation imprisons its citizens the way America does. For a free democratic nation we have a system that belongs with some sort of tyranny or oppressive order. It is oppressive and targets people of color – particularly African Americans. There are more African American males in prisons than in college institutions. That is not the stuff that makes a nation great. I have a degree in Correctional Administration from the University of Wisconsin. It was during internships that I noticed the actual prison systems did not match the scholarly material I was studying. There was no direct attempt to address recidivism or actually rehabilitate offenders. The prisons were warehouses that eventually developed into “cash cows” by the manipulative and greedy. US prisons for the most part have become predators on the general population. Most people who enter prison are there because they could not afford to have adequate legal representation. Once they enter the system there are programs and “catches” that keep them returning or not leaving at all. I believe that 80% of those who are currently incarcerated should not even be there. They are no threat to society and should come out and start contributing. That is not going to happen too soon. First of all there are a lot of people who rely on a good population within prison grounds. Labor unions representing the guards lobby and ensure that they lock up as many as they can and keep the revolving door going for those who get out but are destined to return. The construction lobby keeps the state and federal budgets flush with new capital for building more and more prisons. As they build them the demand for more inmates increases. Then there is the slave labor within the prison cells which is also known as “prison industries”. The incarcerated are forced to work 10 – 14 hours a day for the total pay of about $1.70 per day (not an hour – a day!). The owners of the prisons and the outside contractors sell the products of this work for whopping profits and personal gain. Privatized prisons are the worst as the profit motive greatly increases. The families of the incarcerated are exploited as well. They have to send money to their loved ones as the prison cannot adequately provide nourishment and necessities. The money is used to buy items from the Commissary which is a total rip off joint. As an example a seven ounce can of Folgers coffee will cost an inmate $7.50. That is triple the amount Safeway or Kroger would charge. Who is getting the big profit? If they make a call to family members by the only method, collect calls, it won’t be through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or someone like that. It will be with some kind of private venture and it will cost $6 - $10 a minute. It is just a set up to rip off families who least can afford it. Many inmates make good use of their free time. They get educated and train themselves. But can they ever put these new skills or formal training to work? Right now the only logical path for them is entrepreneurship. That is something prisons refuse to teach them. If they become entrepreneurs they probably will never return and that will hurt this Prison Industrial Complex. My wife and I work with a few prisoners all the time. Our aim is to stay focused on this issue and do what we can to get them freed. We have successfully stayed with one sister who is now back into the general population and our aim is to get her economically stable to ensure she doesn’t get caught in the revolving door. We also are helping a young brother in the Patuxent Correctional facility in Maryland. He has been there for 14 years with no violation whatsoever. He has obtained two college degrees and is a serious computer programmer which the facility exploits for $1.70 per day. 14 straight years and they won’t even give him a parole hearing let alone a parole. He has become a victim of his own genius. They don’t want to lose him. America we have got to end this prison system now! THE WORD ON THE STREET

ORIGINAL GANGSTER Evolution of a Gangsta

Posted by Delores, Designer, AfriCreations.com Between 1930 and 1968 Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson was the most feared criminal in Harlem. So why has he never entered the pantheon of mainstream US villains, asks Joe Queena. In the opening scene of Ridley Scott’s mesmerizing American Gangster, the underworld legend Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson dies in the company of his protege Frank Lucas, lamenting the disappearance of the Harlem he once knew. While the scene takes place in an appliance store, and Johnson, by most accounts, died in Lucas’s arms in a nightclub, the scene establishes the strong bond of affection between the godfather of uptown crime and his surrogate son - a son who would revolutionize the New York heroin trade. I’ve taught you everything you need to know about this racket, Johnson seems to be saying. Now it’s time for me to go. Bumpy Johnson is a perfect example of a type known as the regional legend. Feared and revered in Harlem, whose criminal life he dominated from 1930 to 1968, Johnson has never officially entered the pantheon of mainstream American villains, which is dominated by such high-profile gangsters as Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Dutch Schultz and John Gotti. Despite his flashy attire, his hobbyist poetry and his ostentatious distribution of turkeys to the poor at Thanksgiving (not to mention the fact that he informed the iconography of every blaxploitation movie and gangster rap wannabe since), Johnson never became a transcontinental celebrity like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Bonnie and Clyde, or other freelance, peripatetic psychopaths.

36

This is at least in part because Johnson was known as a man who made people disappear, but didn’t do it in broad daylight. Johnson is more like Frank Nitti, Al Capone’s diligent sidekick, who led his life in the shadow of his far more celebrated mentor. Some people become titans. Some people become cult figures. One way of looking at Johnson’s marginalization from the pages of history is that, because the most depraved criminals are white, induction into this club is an honor few ethnic groups clamour for. An equally valid explanation is that Johnson’s exploits, unlike those of Capone or Luciano, did not resonate beyond his neighborhood, so there is no reason he should be more famous than he is. He may even be the victim of an exotic strain of racism that refuses to honor minority thugs, reserving its weird affections for hoodlums who at least have the redeeming feature of being Caucasian. Yet perhaps the main reason for Johnson’s failure to crack the big time is that he has never been the subject of a first-rate motion picture that branded his name on the public’s consciousness. The closest we’ve come is Shaft, where the fictional character of Bumpy Jonas is based on the legendary crime boss. Johnson also appears as a secondary character in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic dud The Cotton Club, where he had the misfortune to be portrayed by the intense but wooden Laurence Fishburne. Fishburne again played Johnson in the 1997 release Hoodlum, a goofy, historically suspect biopic in which the male lead deliv-

continued -ered an even more inert performance. At times it seemed that Fishburne was engaged in a duel with the cadaverous Clarence J Williams III to see who could be less animated. Ironically, Williams (best known as Prince’s dad in Purple Rain) plays the dying Bumpy Johnson in American Gangster. Hoodlum is an odd, historically inaccurate film that portrays Johnson as a cross between Robin Hood and Malcolm X, a visionary agent of social change who dared to cross swords with the mafia. In reality, Johnson was an outgunned crook forced to seek help from the Cosa Nostra after a futile war with the psychopath Dutch Schultz. Thereafter, he mostly worked as an enforcer for the Italians. He was a prince of the streets, but not a king. Bumpy Johnson, who acquired his nickname because of protrusions on the back of his skull, was born in 1906 in Charleston, SC, now a lovely seaside tourist attraction renowned for its cobblestone streets and federal era architecture and all-around old world charm. But South Carolina was then, and remains to this day, the most reactionary polity in the US, the state that supplied the Confederacy with most of its passion, legal underpinnings and dementia, a state that until recently continued to hang a Confederate flag above the state capital building. Johnson would have been no stranger to racism by the time he arrived in Harlem, a community where racism took other, more subtle forms (the Ku Klux Klan never terrorized black people in New York, as that was the job of the police). No wallflower, Johnson quickly launched on a life of crime, gaining a reputation as a man who wasn’t afraid to hurt people, and actually seemed to enjoy it. In the early 1930s, Johnson got his big break when he was hired as a legbreaker and bodyguard by the reigning queen of uptown crime, Madame Stephanie St Clair. St Clair was a remarkable Martinique-born freelancer who controlled the Harlem numbers racket until Schultz moved in. This led to a bloody war culminating in the intervention of Lucky Luciano, who invented the concept of “organized crime.” Bumpy Johnson is a victim of historical circumstances. His greatest achievement might be that, unlike Luciano (deported), Shultz (murdered) or Capone (died raving mad of syphilis), Johnson died a natural death in the arms of a successor who had the good grace and class not to depose him. In the annals of urban street, this is nothing short of miraculous. Born October 31, 1906 was once called the most dangerous man in New York by a federal prosecutor. Bumpy a man of many descriptions and contradictions. Yet to many residents of Harlem he was viewed as a hero. Among his vices were a weakness for gambling and pretty women (even though he was married), but he didn’t smoke or drink. A rather small man at 5’ 8” and 170 lbs Johnson loved a good fight. Bumpy made his reputation as a tough guy while serving as a bodyguard for Madame Stephanie St.Claire in the early 1920’s. Just out of his teens Johnson’s record included 4 arrests for assault and robbery (charges arising from his efforts to collect from late paying customers). In 1930 Johnson received a 2 1/2 year sentence for attempted grand larceny. Released in 1932 he immediately got caught up in the war between Dutch Schultz and Stephanie St.Claire for control of Harlem’s policy racket. The effort Johnson put forth against the Dutchman drew the attention and admiration of Lucky Luciano (whom he would later play cards with in prison on a regular basis) who after eliminating Schultz staked Johnson’s independent policy bank and sent Trigger Mike Coppola in to protect and watch over Johnson and the syndicate’s investment. Johnson also received a promise that all of his operations would remain independent and he was promised a piece in any new operations that were to be set up in Harlem. By 1966 Bumpy’s rap sheet boasted of 30 arrests for violent crimes and 4 convictions including an 11 year vacation in Alcatraz. The reign of Bumpy Johnson as King of Harlem came to an end July 7, 1968 while eating at Wells restaurant in Harlem. In the end Johnson would be remembered as a pimp, thief, scholar, philanthropist, drug pusher, gentleman and a thug. A contradiction to the end.

ONE OF SLUM VILLAGE CREW PASSES Baatin, Age 35

By Al “AlCaps” Johnson It is awful that we lose one of our own and I say our own, because I don’t really think media should categorize someone just for what they’re known for. Whenever we lose someone no matter what genre’, we should remember that the person was a son or daughter, brother or sister and possibly a mother or father. May all rest in peace and be God Blessed. Baatin, born Titus Glover in 1974 and a member of the successful group Slum Village was found dead Saturday August 1, 2009. Baatin was an east side Detroit native that went to Pershing High School when he cultivated his skills. At the time he was found police did not suspect foul play and it was not treated like a homicide. He had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression which were rumored to be the reason for his hiatus from music and the group. This has had no relevance as of yet on this disturbing situation. This tragedy happens on the brink of Slum Village dropping a new album that was due for September 22, 2009 called “Villa Manifesto”. A single was recently released called “Cloud 9” with Marsha Ambrosius former member of Floetry. Slum Village was best known for their single “Tainted” which was a club banger.

CELEB EXPOSURE

INSIDE DRAKE'S RECORD DEAL By Moe Arora By any modern measure of musical popularity — YouTube views, radio airplay, ring-tone ubiquity — the single “Best I Ever Had” by Toronto rapper Drake is not only a hit, it’s arguably 2009’s “Song of the Summer.” Since debuting on iTunes last month, the hip-hop lust track has sold 600,000 digital downloads and topped three separate pop charts. Even if you can’t summon to mind its rap-sung vocals or brassy syncopated beat, you’ve probably heard “Best I Ever Had” blaring out of a convertible somewhere. Less than a year ago, Drake was basically a zero in the music world, unsigned and virtually unknown as a rhyme-sayer. But thanks to some out-of-the-box branding efforts by several of the best-connected marketing executives in the urban world and the institutional backing of his mentor, rap superstar Lil Wayne, Drake landed two songs in the Top 10 this month — “Best I Ever Had” as a solo artist and “Every Girl” as part of the rap group Young Money. He had already amassed a devoted fan base before he’d even landed a record deal.

46

Every Song of Summer has a saga behind it. And Drake’s breakthrough arrives as a happy accident built on plenty of high-level networking, a label bidding war and an astonishing degree of cooperation among rap world big shots. Chief among them, Drake’s career overseers: the heads of the New York management firm Hip Hop Since 1978 and Cortez Bryant, Lil Wayne’s longtime manager. “They have given me one of the greatest situations in hip-hop,” Drake, 22, said of his team. Under the unusually lucrative agreement he struck with Aspire/ Young Money/Cash Money Records distributed through Universal, Drake received a $2-million advance. He retains the publishing rights to his songs and cedes only around 25% of his music sales revenues to the label as a “distribution fee,” his managers said. By contrast, the overwhelming majority of new artists sign financially restrictive “360 deals” that sap their touring and merchandise income and offer much more restrictive profit-sharing. A dissection of how the rapper was able to drive such a hard bargain underscores an evolution in the music industry. At a time when CD sales have declined by 15% over last summer’s numbers and major labels remain more fixated on scoring hit singles than sustaining artist rosters, managers such as those working with Drake have stepped into the void to become king-makers in urban music.

CELEB EXPOSURE

“The record company doesn’t have any ownership of Drake,” Bryant said. “The label does not have participation on profits. They don’t have ownership of his masters. We control his entire career. Those deals don’t happen anymore.” Although already famous in his native Canada for portraying a disabled high school basketball player on the teen television drama “DeGrassi: The Next Generation,” which also airs in the U.S., Drake (government name: Aubrey Drake Graham) didn’t exactly take the music industry by storm when he self-released a mix-tape, the appropriately titled “Room for Improvement,” in 2006. “I was recording, and the music was decent. But I was on my own. I had no team in place,” Drake said. “What you learn as you progress is this business is based on relationships in a major way.” After a subsequent mix-tape (as such al gratis digitally downloadable music compilations are known) brought the rapper to the attention of Lil Wayne, everything changed. The rap superstar, whose “Tha Carter III” was the bestselling album of last year, contributed a scorching guest verse on Drake’s September underground banger “Ransom,” effectively vouching for the newcomer’s legitimacy. More important, their “collabo” compelled Bryant to sign on as Drake’s manager. “Here’s a guy who’s not an established artist, and lyrically he’s close to or on the same level as Lil Wayne,” Bryant exclaimed. From there, Bryant entered into a managerial tandem with the heavyweight firm Hip Hop Since 1978, whose marketing prowess has resulted in two of the biggest rap releases of the decade: Kanye West’s “Graduation” and “Tha Carter III,” both of which sold around 1 million copies in their first week of release. The firm’s principles — Gee Roberson, Kyambo “Hip Hop” Joshua and Al Branch — earned their stripes working at Roc-A-Fella Records, the influential label established by rap rainmaker Jay-Z in the ’90s. They are credited with raising the stature of such artists as Jill Scott and the Roots by grooming them into lucrative touring acts. The firm’s greatest renown comes from transitioning West away from his reputation earlier in this decade as a beat-maker for hire into a superstar rapper-singer.

MORGAN FREEMAN ALLEGEDLY IS HAVING OR HAS HAD AN AFFAIR WITH STEP-GRAND DAUGHTER E'DENA HINES It’s been said that Morgan Freeman and his wife of 25 years, Myrna Colley-Lee, had an open marriage throughout their marriage. But the “they sayer’s” do say, give someone an inch and they’ll take a mile. This is from a male that love’s indulgence and taking things to the fk’in edge. But to me, in life there are codes and this seems to be definitely one that has been broken. Although, I do say to each his own. The granddaughter of Morgan’s first wife Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, E’Dena Hines, was raised by Myrna and Morgan. The affair between the two has supposedly been going on for ten years now. “Myrna said E’dena told her that when she was a teenager, she and Morgan went to dinner at a friend’s house one evening. Both had been drinking, and when they returned home, Morgan attempted to have sex with her. They stopped just short of having intercourse,” the source, a close family insider, told The Enquirer.

Myrna had confronted Morgan about the situation, but the no longer undercover relationship did not stop and actually escalated. Morgan and Myrna have been going through a ruff divorce, needless to say, while reports state that he has also lost his longtime mistress Mary Joyce Hayes. Morgan has been escorted by E’Dena at his last several appearances, but no one has been the wiser with Morgan stating that this was his granddaughter at these appearances. I mean… I’m not saying that this was incest, because they were not blood related, but incest-tish to me! You know what I mean! At the least, it was very disrespectful to all women involved, even E’Dena for probably taken advantage of the situation if not her.

“E’Dena explained to Myrna that she stopped Morgan from going any further.”

USA TODAY'S COACHES POLL

this decade. This group has it all, which is going to make everyone, including the new quarterback, more effective. The Trojans have tons of experience, anchors at center and left tackle, and as many as six or seven members of the two-deep, who’ll someday play in the pros. It too often gets overlooked, but the line will be the catalyst for a lot of USC’s success in 2009.

1. Florida (60) 13-1

What to watch for on defense: The new linebackers. Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, and Kaluka Maiava were all drafted by the NFL in April. Sure, it would’ve been nice if even one veteran was back at the position, but there’s no stopping progress. Or the next wave of stars about to populate the depth chart. Chris Galippo, Malcolm Smith, and Michael Morgan are next in line, and have just as good a chance to follow their predecessors into the pros. The newcomers won’t be as prolific, at least not right away, but they will be faster and potentially more apt to create turnovers. By 2010, they’ll all be experienced upperclassmen, and ready to bridge the gap from Cushing, Maualuga, and Maiava.

Florida, like any other SEC team, can lose a game and still play for the national championship, but it won’t exactly sit well with everyone who passed up sure-thing millions to come back to do something special if this is another 13-1 season, even if there’s a big crystal football at the end of the rainbow. This is a 14-0 team that shouldn’t be touched if it plays up to its talent level week in and week out. It’s not just No. 1 going into the season, its No. 1 and No. 2, Texas, Oklahoma, or USC, aren’t even in the discussion. For this season, Florida might have to lose twice to not get to Pasadena, but this group is demanding something more What to watch for on offense: The I-formation?! New offensive coordinator Steve Addazio was experimenting this offseason in an attempt to add a few more wrinkles to the equation. No, this isn’t going to be 1977 Nebraska, and the spread isn’t going anywhere, but part of the overall goal is to develop Tim Tebow’s NFL passing ability and to get the running backs more involved. The biggest beneficiary in this year’s offense, which really isn’t going to change, will be tight end Aaron Hernandez. The team’s third leading receiver last year will get the ball more often and will be the go-to receiver now that Harvin and Murphy are gone. What to watch for on defense: The backups. With 11 starters returning from a defense that finished ninth in the nation, fourth in scoring D, and held down the all-timer of an Oklahoma offense, there isn’t all that much room for wild, sweeping changes. But there’s a problem that’s not really a problem: some of the backups are better than the starters. Omar Hunter is a fantastic tackle prospect who’ll be perfect on the nose and could see far more time in the rotation at both spots. Will Hill might be the team’s best safety, but he’ll have a hard time knocking all-stars Ahmad Black and Major Wright out of a job. Years of strong recruiting have stocked the shelves, and it should be interesting to see how the rotation ends up playing out.

2. USC12-1 USC will once again be the class of the Pac-10 (insert yawn here). In fact, even with a fair amount of turnover from a year ago, the gap may have widened on the likes of Cal and Oregon. To get in the same discussion with the likes of Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma, questions need to be answered at quarterback and the front seven of the defense. While the defensive line and linebackers should be fine, thanks to some of the nations best recruiting, you always worry when an unproven player takes over behind center. For now, sophomore Aaron Corp is the anointed one, but uber-recruit Matt Barkley has already looked as if he’s been here before. Corp will need to excel right away, or else Barkley will become the most popular backup in the country. What to watch for on offense: The offensive line. Yeah, it’s rough to focus on interior linemen, when Damian Williams, Stafon Johnson, and Joe McKnight are on the playground, but these Trojans are worth the discipline. If you like dominant, athletic front walls, then USC is going to grab your eye throughout the year. After doing some shuffling and rebuilding, assistant Pat Ruel just might have his best collection of talent

3. Texas12-1

There’s no excuse this year if Texas isn’t off to Pasadena for the big show. Texas is one of only two teams in America, the SEC champion being the other, who can erase the BCS system, blow past any and all technicalities, and play for the national title. Because of what happened last year, and the sympathy that came with the bad break, the Longhorns will get every benefit of the doubt from the voters. If they go unbeaten, they’ll play for the national title no matter what anyone else does. Texas controls its own destiny. USC can’t say that. Ohio State can’t say that. Oklahoma can’t say that. 118 FBS teams (again, an unbeaten SEC champion being the other) can’t say that. What to look for on offense: The young receivers. The running backs will again operate by committee, with the hope to do more so Colt McCoy doesn’t have to lead the team in rushing again, and the offensive line should pave the way for a more consistent season. However, the key to the Texas offense is the precision passing attack that McCoy was so masterful at last year. Getting top target Jordan Shipley back with a sixth year of eligibility was key, but the stars of the show could be from last year’s recruiting class. Malcolm Williams already showed what he could do with a whale of a performance in the loss to Texas Tech, Dan Buckner has the size and potential to be great, and DeSean Hales has the game breaking ability to potentially be the best of the three. The emergence of the young receivers might be the difference between a great year and a national title. What to look for on defense: Sergio Kindle doing his Brian Orakpo imitation. Kindle is an All-America caliber linebacker who saw a little bit of time as a rush end late in the year when Orakpo went down. While Kindle might still play a more natural outside linebacker spot from time to time, he’ll use his speed, smarts, and talent to be used as the Buck end and be asked to be a pure pass rusher. Don’t be shocked if he puts up better numbers than Orakpo (who made 10.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss).

4. Utah (1) 13-0

After last year, will the Utes finally start to get their respect? They have as many good athletes and playmakers as most of the BCSers and they have a solid enough schedule with Oregon and Louisville to deal with. Will the Utes go 12-0 and get a shot to play for the national title? No, but if they can beat the Ducks in Eugene and win at TCU and BYU, they’ll deserve the chance, and that’s all they’re asking for.

SPORTS

What to watch for on offense: More running out of the quarterbacks. If it’s Terrance Cain under center it’ll be another year of Brian Johnsonlike passing efficiency. However, Corbin Louks will likely get the first shot, even if there’s a rotation, and he’ll come up with at least 500 rushing yards and add a dimension to the attack that was missing after Johnson’s knee injuries. What to watch for on defense: The corners. Everything else is in place for the Utes to boast the Mountain West’s best defense, or at least be in the race with TCU. The line is fantastic, the linebackers are terrific, and the safeties are all-stars. But there will be an early concern that the new corners might struggle a bit early on, even though they’re experienced and bring blinding speed to the table. R.J. Stanford, Brandon Burton, Kamaron Yancy and Justin Jones can move. Now they have to show they can cover. If they’re good, the defense will be a brick wall.

5. Oklahoma12-2

So now the question will be whether or not OU has the makeup to get back over the hump and get Bob Stoops his second national title. Considering this might be Stoops’ best team yet, get ready for yet another run to the BCS. What to look for on offense: The offensive line. Last year’s front five was the best in America, and this year it has to replace tackle Phil Loadholt, guards Duke Robinson and Brandon Walker, and center Jon Cooper. Tackle Trent Williams might have been the best of the bunch, and while he’s back and will move over from right tackle to the left, there are some major question marks after a rocky offseason. Brian Simmons has the potential to be a strong left guard, and there are good, big options at the other three spots, but it’s asking a lot to keep Bradford upright like last year’s line did. OU allowed just 13 sacks last season and paved the way for 2,779 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns. This year’s front five might not be as good, but it can’t be a liability in the up-tempo, no-huddle attack. What to look for on defense: A dominant front seven. It’s not an overstatement to suggest that OU has six legitimate pro prospects to rotate around up front, while the line backing trio of Ryan Reynolds in the middle, leading-tackler Travis Lewis on the weak side, and Keenan Clayton on the strong side will make its pitch to be among the best in college football. Last year, the line was camped out in opposing backfields making 42 tacks and 106 tackles for loss. Those numbers might not even be close to what this year’s group should come up with thanks to a devastating end rotation and Gerald McCoy, Adrian Taylor, and DeMarcus Granger at tackle. No one’s going to run on this group.

6. Alabama12-2

So if last year’s team came from out of nowhere to become a heartbeat away from playing for the national championship, don’t be shocked if this year’s team, with all the improvements, is able to finish the job. What to watch for on offense: Greg McElroy. The junior might not be flashy and he’s not going to do anything that’ll earn him all-star honors over Tim Tebow, but he’s the type of heady, tough, consistent playmaker who ends up winning championships. LSU was able to win national titles with Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn, and Alabama won a championship with Jay Barker at the helm. McElroy is the same sort of leader who won’t screw things up and will make the plays that need to be made.

What to watch for on defense: The run defense. After finishing No. 2 last year against the run with a line backing corps that was getting its feet wet and with a mediocre pass rush that didn’t help the statistics, Bama should be truly special. The front three, anchored by Terrence Cody, is full of huge, tackle-sized linemen at all the spots, while the linebackers are phenomenal. No one’s going to be able to power the ball on this group, while the spread attacks will have more problems than they had last year.

7. TCU11-2

The team had a bit of a spring in its step and a quiet confidence throughout spring ball, and it’s expecting to be special this year. Will this finally be the season TCU joins Utah, Hawaii, and Boise State on the list of BCS busters? With the juggernaut Patterson has created, it’s a possibility. What to watch for on offense: As many as five backs in the running rotation. Helped by running quarterbacks, TCU ran for 2,863 yards and 39 touchdowns. However, there will be production coming from some of the receiver, QB Andy Dalton, and five running backs, Ryan Christian, Joseph Turner, Chris Smith, Jai Caveness, and Edward Wesley, who could rotate in and out when needed. What to watch for on defense: Daryl Washington. The Horned Frogs only use two linebackers, at least technically, with a weak safety serving as a hybrid, and they lose two great ones in first-team All-Mountain West performers Jason Phillips and Robert Henson. And in comes Washington. The star reserve and spot starter from last year made 63 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, and 5.5 tackles for loss. Now, one of the best athletes on the team is going to be all

8. Penn State11-2

The schedule is beyond manageable, there’s as much overall speed and athleticism as the program has had in years, and the potential problems really aren’t that awful. It’s all in place for yet another big run and another great year for Paterno. Enjoy it while it lasts, and while you’re at it, ask Michigan how much fun it is for a mega-power to go through a change. What to watch for on offense: The new receivers. The Nittany Lion top three receivers, Deon Butler, Derrick Williams, and Jordan Norwood, combined for 132 catches for 1,932 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. So good were those three that the passing game all but ignored the tremendous tight ends and didn’t throw to the backs enough. While the new receiving corps will need time to be as good. Chaz Powell is a sub-4.4 runner with tremendous quickness and No. 1 target capability, and Derek Moye is a sub-4.4 runner with tremendous quickness and No. 1 target capability, but he’s 6-5. The tight ends, Andrew Quarless and Mickey Shuler, are too good not to be more involved, and their reemergence will allow the wide receivers to create matchup nightmares. What to watch for on defense: The secondary. This could be the Achilles heel. There will be production and the stats will be fine, but oft-injured corner A.J. Wallace has to suddenly use all his NFL tools and be a good college coverman. The safeties are promising, but untested, while Knowledge Timmons is a senior who has yet to put it all together at corner. This group will all hit and they’ll all make big plays against the run, but if it has to deal with a top-shelf receiving corps, watch out. That’s why...

USA TODAY'S COACHES POLL conitnued

9. Oregon10-3

10. Georgia10-3

Kelly has taken the baton from Bellotti and is poised to keep Oregon among the Pac-10 elite, but can he elevate the program beyond where his predecessor took it? He’ll get his first chance this fall with a team that has enough talent to knock mighty USC from its perch and enough holes to finish the season in El Paso at the Sun Bowl.

Eventually it’ll be Georgia’s turn. The program has good and the coaching is too solid to not get all the one magical run. Florida is the best team in the East, ably the country, but don’t be shocked if Georgia enough production across the board to pull off a bit of

been too breaks in and probgets just a stunner.

What to watch for on offense: LeGarrette Blount’s career as a solo artist. Sure, he’s going to get help, but not as much as last season, when Jeremiah Johnson got the majority of the carries. At 6-2 and 229 yards, Blount is built for a feature role, something he’s craved since transferring from East Mississippi Community College. In a part-time role, he still managed to rush for more than 1,000 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns. With an expanded role and more touches, he’s capable of having a monster final year in Eugene.

What to watch for on offense: The line. It’s the walking wounded going into the fall with so many key players recovering from a slew of issues, led by star left tackle Trinton Sturdivant coming off a bad knee injury, but if everyone is healthy, there won’t be a deeper more talented line in America. There’s so much talent and so much versatility that the coaching staff can play around with the lineup whenever needed and get production. It happened last year with decent results, and there’s no reason the line can’t be better with so many key parts returning.

What to watch for on defense: The linebackers. Very quietly, this is going to be one of the strongest and most dependable units on the entire team. In juniors Spencer Paysinger and Casey Matthews, the Ducks have a pair of athletic, highly-instinctive defenders, who laid the groundwork last year for all-star consideration. And sophomore Eddie Pleasant, while young, looks capable of replacing Jerome Boyd at strong side without skipping a beat. Together, they form a unit that’s going to make a ton of plays and be everywhere their needed for the D this fall.

What to watch for on defense: The tackle rotation. With Jeff Owens back after missing almost all of last season and with Geno Atkins choosing to return for his senior year rather than be a millionaire as a first round pick in this year’s draft, the Bulldogs are loaded on the inside. Throw in 320-pound veteran Kade Weston, who’s trying to get healthy after playing banged up last year, and emerging star DeAngelo Tyson, and Georgia will be phenomenal on the defensive interior.

STILL RECOVERING FROM INJURY, GEORGES ST. PIERRE Reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre -- still on the mend from a groin injury he suffered in his last successful title defense against Thiago Alves -- is targeting a likely January 2010 return to the octagon, his manager Shari Spencer told FanHouse. The 28-year-old St. Pierre suffered the injury in the third round of the UFC 100 bout and gutted his way through the pain for the remainder of the five-round fight, earning a lopsided unanimous decision. In the aftermath, he feared a torn groin, but received a reprieve when doctors informed him the injury was not as serious as previously thought, and that no surgery was necessary. St. Pierre, who is hoping to gain clearance to return to fullcontact sparring within the next two weeks, has recently been enjoying his downtime with a trip to Saint-Tropez, France. “He’s feeling well and just waiting for clearance to resume his full-contact training,” Spencer said. #While no bout has yet been officially offered to St. Pierre, last month, UFC President Dana White announced that the winner of Sept. 19’s UFC 103 matchup between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann would be his next opponent. Given the rest time necessary for the winner of that contest coupled with St. Pierre’s preference for a nine-week camp, it’s likely that his next title defense will come in the early weeks of 2010. The UFC hasn’t officially announced any dates in the New Year, but is expected to run pay-per-view events on both Jan. 2 and Jan. 30. The UFC views its New Year’s weekend and Super Bowl weekend shows as two of its biggest events of the year. “We have nothing firm, but it seems logical to me that he’d be on one of those two cards as they like to use Georges for their bigger events because of his draw,” Spencer said. In the meantime, St. Pierre is working on general sponsor support, filming an instructional DVD, and may sign on for a movie role next month. Spencer is also in negotiations for an endorsement deal with another high-profile, “bigger-than-the-sport” company to follow on the heels of GSP’s successful run with Gatorade. Spencer also confirmed that St. Pierre is not participating in next month’s Abu Dhabi Submission Fighting World Championship. The tournament’s website lists him as an entrant, but although he has previously competed in the respected grappling tourney, he will not compete at this year’s edition, scheduled to take place in Barcelona.

MIND, BODY AND SOUL Balance Planning & Spontaneity

The holiday season is often one of the most exciting times of the year, but it can also be one of the most hectic. For some men, though, the holidays aren’t much busier than the rest of the year. Even when we’re not at work, we regularly find our agendas brimming with reminders to get a myriad of things done -- often at the sacrifice of downtime. For men with set schedules, being spontaneous can be a tough challenge. When an opportunity to do something unexpected comes up, how do you choose between it and your strict list of plans? Here are some steps to help you balance planning and spontaneity all year. Identify Priorities

Get a Fridge Calendar

If you’re going to succeed in managing your busy personal life, you’ll have to first figure out what’s most crucial to you. Make a list of everything you have to do, and rank the items in order of importance; you’ll find that some things will need to be done right away, while others can be put off a day or longer. This list will make your efforts to balance planning and spontaneity much easier. If an unexpected event comes up, see if it conflicts with something pressing on your to-do list. If it does conflict with your list, you may have to forgo spontaneity for now. If you don’t have anything scheduled at the time, however, throw caution to the wind and enjoy being spontaneous.

Buying a large fridge calendar can be one of the wisest $10 investments you can make. A calendar will come in handy for not only key appointments, get-togethers and things on your to-do list, but it will also show you which days are open and flexible. These flexible days are perfect opportunities to be spontaneous. If you’re really creative, you might enjoy color-coding the entries on your calendar. One color can represent things that need to be done as soon as possible, while another color can be for things that aren’t so crucial.

Develop an Open Mind

Remember, this is your life, not your career. At work, if you don’t have a report or a project done by a certain day, there might be hell to pay -- don’t run your personal life in this way. If you know you have to do a certain outdoor task, don’t schedule it to take place on a particular day. Rather, set a wider parameter and give yourself a week to get it done. This plan will greatly help your ability to be spontaneous. When an unexpected opportunity comes up, you’ll have a much easier time saying yes to it if you know that job at home can be completed another day -- rather than it needing to be done at a very specific time.

If you’re a creature of habit, you may notice that when someone suggests doing something spontaneous or out of the ordinary, the first thing you do is come up with an excuse for why you can’t fit it into your plan. Such excuses aren’t based on reality; you may be adhering too closely to your list of priorities, effectively shunning an opportunity to go out and try something new. Instead, try to be open to all possibilities. If you’re feeling panicky about a spontaneous idea, it’s OK to take a few minutes to weigh out the options in your mind. Be open to new ideas and you may just end up discovering something that you enjoy or be exposed to a unique opportunity. Don’t Plan to Just Fill Time It’s easy to laugh at the person you know who never stops to take a breather -- don’t let yourself turn into this person. When you find you have an open weekend, afternoon or even just a couple hours, don’t scramble to fill that time with a task. It’s OK to have downtime, and whether that gives you a chance to be spontaneous or just to relax, you’ll be better for it.

56

Schedule Tasks within the Week, Not Days

A Balanced Life We don’t know what’s on your to-do list, so we can’t tell you which tasks you’ll need to stick to and which ones you can forgo when a chance to do something spontaneous comes up. You’ll have to play it on a case-by-case basis, and follow your instincts when you’re put in the hard position of choosing between sticking to your plan and being more spontaneous. Sometimes you can be flexible, other times you can’t. It’s most important to do what you’ll be happy with at the end of the day.

VIRILITY FOODS Sex is good for your health. A 1997 study by randy researchers at Queens University in Belfast found that men who had more orgasms had half the death rate of, ahem, flaccid guys. To reap those rewards you don’t need to guzzle love potion or pop potency pills, you just have to grab a sack of almonds. Or maybe slurp down a few oysters and some olive oil. Some simple foods can naturally boost your sex drive. Want hard proof? No problem. Scientists have studied their effects and they’re more than willing to share. So eat up and get ready for blast off. Oysters Oysters harbor lots of zinc, almost more than any other natural source. And zinc, we’ve learned, is a high-octane sex-drive booster for men and women. These soggy sacks of protein are aphrodisiacs after all. If you can’t stomach oysters, try pumpkin seeds or good old beef, both of which are also excellent sources of zinc. Hard Evidence: According to the Cornell Institute for Reproductive Medicine Center for Male Reproduction in New York, zinc is a key raw material for testosterone production and male fertility. Other medical texts cite zinc as being vital to the production of semen. The doctors at Cornell also say that zinc is essential for the prostate -- your body’s love pump. Tomatoes Mamma’s tomato sauce could get you into some real trouble. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a key ingredient that benefits your virility and prostate health. Tomatoes also have lots of vitamin C, which is great for overall health. Raw or cooked, they’re good news for your potency. Hard Evidence: Researchers at the University of Illinois and the West Side VA Medical Center found that tomato sauce, and its contained lycopene, helps prevent prostate cancer and promotes prostate health. So next time, ask for extra tomatoes on that hoagie. They’ll keep you pumped and primed. Almonds Almonds and nuts in general, are good for your member and your virility. They contain arginine, an amino acid that is a key part of the erection process. In fact, arginine has been called nature’s Viagra. Hard Evidence: Studies at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Department of Surgery in Torrance, California, found that arginine increased the frequency and duration of erections in rats. It’s not quite the same thing as testing the amino acid on humans, but it’s worth further study. And eating almonds and other nuts can help lower your cholesterol levels to boot. Walnuts Walnuts may provide a real, all-natural alternative to Viagra. The Romans and French have used them as aphrodisiacs for centuries. Like almonds, they contain arginine, but in higher quantities.

Hard evidence: A team of researchers at the University of Malaya in Malaysia recently decided to test the ancient love potion. They squeezed about 3.3 kilograms of walnuts to produce a super-potent extract. The result is a pill that can keep you rock solid for up to four hours. It has been approved in Malaysia and the researchers hope to get broader approval in the future. In the meantime, you might want to chow down on some walnuts. But use them in moderation, as they’re high in calories and could lead to love handles. Chilies Spicy chilies can also add some zing to your sex life. The “hot” ingredient, capsaicin, increases your heart rate, dilates blood vessels and releases endorphins, which is definitely a plus when you’re feeling passionate. Hard Evidence: A team of Hungarian researchers at the Albert SzentGyorgyi Medical University measured vascular dilation and permeability in rats that had a healthy dose of capsaicin. No surprises, hot chilies triggered increased blood flow and dilated blood vessels. Does this mean you should rub chili past on your lil’ john? No, definitely not. Still, eating chili peppers or food that contains them, can raise your heart rate, increase blood flow and release endorphins. Ginger Like chilies, ginger can supposedly kick your love life into action. Its spicy properties can, according to research, increase blood flow and help with testosterone production. Hard Evidence: In Nigeria, Dr. Yinusa Raji of the University of Ibadan, fed rats ginger extract for eight days. At the end of the experiment, he found that their testosterone levels had increased. And, to top it off, their testis had gained weight. The study hasn’t been duplicated for verification, but it’s a surprising find nonetheless. Celery If you smell nice, you’ll have better luck with the ladies. But you’ll need more than Old Spice to really get them going. Celery contains the hormone androsterone, which is released through male perspiration. It’s odorless, but it signals “maleness” and virility as a pheromone and could, therefore, land you a date. Eat a bunch of celery and you’ll be pumping out androsterone in no time. Hard Evidence: Some romantic scientists at the University of Kentucky tested androsterone’s effects by spraying it on photos of, well, homely guys. They showed the photos to various women before and after the treatment. When their photos were sprayed, those average guys were perceived as more “attractive.” Now, where can we get some of this celery cologne? Eat Up With enhancers like Viagra storming the market for all you under-performers out there, it’s hard to imagine almonds, walnuts and tomatoes garnering the same results. But, when you think about the health benefits of popping a few oysters as opposed to popping a few pills, the natural way is just so much more uplifting.

COUCH POTATO WORKOUTS Triceps Dips Triceps dips are a great exercise to target your back arm muscles. To perform these dips, place your hands on the edge of the couch with the front side of your body facing away. Your feet should be at a comfortable distance from the couch so that you can assume a bent-elbow position. Next, starting with your elbows straightened; slowly lower your body so that your butt moves closer to the floor while you bend at the elbows. Once you are as low as you can go and your shoulders and arms are at a 90-degree angle, straighten your arms and start over again. Perform a series of 15 to 20 dips at a time for a total of two to three sets. Focus on lowering and rising using only your arm muscles and not using your quads. Benefits: What many men don’t know is that triceps actually form the largest portion of your arms, so if you are looking to add size, instead of spending countless hours working biceps, you should focus on your triceps. Triceps dips are the perfect way to isolate these muscles and get them to grow. Hyper-Extended Sit-Ups This is an extra difficult movement that will help you get that sixpack you’ve been wanting. Sit on the arm of the couch so your back is facing toward the end. It may be helpful to have someone sit on your feet for this or to put a small weighted object over your ankles. Next, slowly lean back, keeping your arms crossed in front of your chest.  Pause when you are at 180 degrees and, if you are able to, go slightly lower. Once you have reached the lowest you can go, rise until you are back in the sitting position. Complete 10 repetitions.  Benefits: This exercise will target your entire rectus abdominal muscle and really help to bring out those top two ab muscles.   Side Bends To perform the side-bend exercise, get into the same position as you did for the hyper extended sit-ups, only this time sit on your hip so you are facing sideways. Proceed to slowly lower your body as low as possible (you may not be able to go as low on this exercise depending on your own individual strength). Rise to complete the rep. Work your way up to 15 repetitions. Benefits: By performing this exercise, you will help target your side abdominal muscles (obliques), while also helping to improve your balance. Couch Crunches In addition to your strength-training exercises, fitting in some cardio work will help to shed body fat that is covering your muscles and will improve muscle definition. A great way to achieve this is to perform a short burst of cardio during every commercial break. Start by doing jumping jacks during the first commercial, walking lunges during the second, jogging in place during the third, and running up and down your stairs during the last commercial (or alternatively step up and down on a chair if you don’t have stairs).

58

This will get your heart rate up and help you burn more calories during your couch workout. In addition to that sequence you could also add in some phantom punching or high kicks to add variety and prevent boredom.  So don’t let being homebound stop you from staying in good shape. A couch potato workout doesn’t take much time and it will definitely go a long way in helping you maintain your physical conditioning. For many, getting to the gym regularly is simply not an option, but it doesn’t mean that their fitness levels have to plummet. There are plenty of exercises to do right in the comfort of your own home, all while sitting on your couch. It’s the perfect way to stay in shape while watching the big game, spending time with your family or relaxing during a night in. Take some time to do these and you’ll be thankful the next day when you look in the mirror. Squats Since the cushions on the couch provide a great deal of instability, your leg muscles are challenged without having to use weights. The muscles are also going to contract much quicker than if you were on a solid surface, translating to more strength gains. To perform couch squats, simply stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart (to make it more challenging, place your legs closer together) and then squat down as low as possible. Hold that position and then rise. Do two sets of 10 reps. Benefits: This exercise will not only strengthen your quad, hamstring and glute muscles, but it will also help to increase your proprioception (awareness of body position) and balance. Leg Raises Performing leg raises on a couch rather than on the floor will be difficult since your support base is reduced. To do this exercise, sit so that you are balanced on the very edge of the couch (you may want to sit on an armchair to make it slightly easier). Next, shift back slightly so that your back is in a horizontal position and your balance is slightly off-center. Try raising and lowering your legs off the floor for a total of six to eight reps. Don’t worry too much if you can’t get them to come all the way up in the beginning, this is a very challenging exercise and something you will have to work at. Benefits: The benefits you will receive from this workout are an increase in your hip flexor muscles, an increase in the lower and upper abdominal muscles, along with a general sense of balance. Squat Jumps This is a great exercise for those who are looking to develop leg power. To begin, stand up straight on the seat cushions of your couch with your toes close to the edge. Next, bend at the knee and jump off the couch as high as you can, landing in a bent-leg position. As you land, sink as low to the ground as possible and rebound off the floor for a second jump. Repeat the whole process for a total of 10 reps. Benefits: You will improve your fast twitch muscle fibers, which are associated with larger and fuller muscles, and are more apparent in those who do a lot of weightlifting. You will also gain a great amount of leg power.

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? Prostate Cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death in men. Most men do not realize the severity of this hazardous disease and think they are too busy to get checked out. In a way, prostate cancer is the male equivalent of breast cancer, which plagues millions of women, but, unlike women, men pay little attention to the detecting its early signs. A little precaution today can go a long way tomorrow, and may even save your life. If you have a minute or two, take the time to learn more about this potential adversary. It is crucial for men to pay attention to their health. Meet the Enemy Prostate cancer begins with the growth of a malignant tumor within the prostate gland and spreads by extending into the seminal vesicles, bladder and peritoneal cavity. It eventually metastasizes to the lymph nodes, bones, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The cause is unknown, although studies illustrate a small relation between high dietary fat intake and increased testosterone levels. Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than 40 years of age. The frequency of occurrence is greatest in African-American men over 60 years old. Increased occurrence is also associated with farmers, tire workers, painters, and men exposed to the cadmium, a metallic element. The lowest incidence occurs in vegetarians. The cancer is classified based on the tumor’s aggressiveness and the degree of its difference from the surrounding tissue. Most prostate cancers are staged using the Whitmore-Jewett system (A B C D system). The system categorizes the tumors using the following scale: A: Tumor that cannot be detected by touch but only through microscopic biopsy (tissue sampling). B: Tumor that can be detected through touch and is still confined to the prostate. C: Spreading of the tumor beyond the prostate. D: The cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes. Risk Factors The risk factors are well documented but inadequately understood. Some studies show positive associations with: Age: Prostate cancer is particularly common among elderly men. Its prevalence has been reported in over 40% of men aged 70 years or older. Race/Ethnicity: Large variations in the number of cases and mortality rate of prostate cancer have been observed among countries and racial/ethnic groups. African-Americans have the highest mortality rate for prostate cancer in the world, followed by Caucasians in Scandinavian countries. Asian men have the lowest mortality rate. Family History: Epidemiological studies report that men who have family histories of prostate cancer are two or three times more likely to develop the disease. Symptoms In order to treat prostate cancer, early detection is important (preferably before stage B). This is why paying attention to the messages your body sends you is crucial. A doctor cannot treat you if you don’t inform him of your symptoms. If you’ve noticed the following warning signs, consult your doctor immediately:

Delayed or slow start of urinary stream (urinary hesitancy) Pain with urination Urinary dribbling Urinary retention Lower back pain Pain with ejaculation Pain with bowel movement Excessive urination during the night Excessive sweating Frequent and urgent urination Abnormal urine color Weight loss Bone pain Abdominal pain Lethargy Treatment Options Once a positive diagnosis is identified, the patient and doctor mutually decide on treatment. Patients should be well informed of the different treatments available because the final decision will have an effect on their quality of life. The decision should be considered very carefully and should include their partners’ input, because they will ultimately be affected by the chosen course of action as well. The following list comprises a summary of different treatment possibilities: 1. Watchful Waiting: This is not actually a medical treatment. This option is best suited for older men with a ten-year life expectancy or less and whose tumor has not spread beyond the prostate. The reason for waiting is that the cancer is growing slowly and the men will probably die from natural causes before the tumor spreads. Other radical treatments, such as surgery, might be more dangerous than simply waiting.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? The second surgical method involves making an incision in the abdomen, just below the umbilicus, which extends downward to the pubic bone (see illustration on the left). This method is generally used for a more advanced cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes of the pelvis. 3. Radiation: An option that is less traumatic than RP and appears to have similar results when used in the early stages. Radiation treatment, however, also has side effects. Half the patients treated have reported various types of impotence. The treatment is applied through an external beam that directs the radiation dose directly within the prostate to kill cancer cells.

2. Radical Prostatectomy (RP): A treatment where the prostate is completely removed. If performed when cancer is confined to the gland, the patient should be cured since, in theory, it removes all the cancer. RP is a serious operation that requires weeks of recuperation. This treatment can have lasting side effects, including impotence and incontinence. The FDA, however, recently approved a device called the CaverMap, which aids surgeons in locating nerve bundles, to help avoid severing nerves related to continence and erections when removing the prostate. There are two major surgical methods used for removing the prostate gland. The first one -- the “perineal” method -- is used primarily when the prostate cancer is limited to the prostate gland and has not spread. An incision is made in the perineum (see picture on the right).

4. Cryotherapy: An experimental treatment with unknown long-term effectiveness due to inadequate data. The treatment involves killing the tumor’s cells by freezing them. Early results are very encouraging. 5. Hormonal Therapy: Used in all phases of prostate cancer treatment. It helps block production or action of male hormones that have been shown to fuel prostate cancer. The most widely used and approved hormone blockers are Lupron, Casodex, Eulexin, Nilandron, and Zoladex. In some situations, the testicles are removed because they produce male hormones. It is recommended that patients commit to further research before making their final decision. The treatments mentioned above are in a summarized format. More information is available at your family doctor’s office.

TRAVEL AND DINE

VEGAS BABY! Sin City In The Desert By Al “Al-Caps” Johnson First of all I must say that this was my first time in Las Vegas, Nevada. I loved it and had a great time. Anyone that has not had a chance to get to this seemingly untamed placed; you must go at least once in your lifetime no matter what age. There is something there to do for everyone there age 8 – 80, trust me! Las Vegas also has all of the accommodations to fit the pocket at any budget on or off “The Strip”. But don’t forget it is called “Sin City” so please be careful and go by something I myself go by “Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings”. For my first time I went with several friends some who had been before, but most all newcomers. Most of us chose to stay at The Palazzo Hotel at The Venetian, which is one of the plushest hotels in Vegas amongst others. Others in the crew stayed at Planet Hollywood Westgate Towers and The Sahara. So I must say out of all of us, we had a good scaling to go by when it comes to the hotels. Now all of these hotels were for different prices* ranging from low, medium to high, with all of them being nice and of different genre’s. You must know that Vegas is a get what you pay for type of spot though. For instance at the somewhat pricier hotel The Palazzo, everything is there for your beckoned need from towels for the suite (yes, it is an all suite hotel) to the perks, comps and possible free upgrades for your suite. This place has everything 5 star suites, casino, restaurants, clubs and all the places to shop from A – Z all upscale. Planet Hollywood At Westgate Towers on the other hand is very nice as well, but to me is geared more to just a trendy more hip crowd which should be suspected to anyone who knows anything about the Planet Hollywood franchise. Which I must say is great for me! They have everything 4 star and swanky the club (which I did happen to get kicked out of LMAO), the shops and the casino even has several poles with female dancers spread throughout the place. The suites are somewhat smaller than The Palazzo, but still great compared to some suites in other cities. Last, but not least especially for the price is The Sahara. For the person that’s let’s say

62

For the person that’s let’s say more into gambling and saving their money for that while not really compromising the accommodations of your stay, this may be the place. The suites are a nice size, with the only thing missing being the plasma TV’s. The suites do have great views with the floor to ceiling windows. And that sound of Vegas that you are so anticipating to hear as soon as you get off the plane of slots, casino noise and people cheering are all happening in this spot. It is also in an area that is very convenient to little souvenir shops and convenience stores for all of your little nick-knacks, which may be a little harder to come by near the larger hotels. Ok, Ok, Ok now to the damn fun, since you have somewhere to lay your head! You already know about the casinos or do you? Most of the more popular casino’s like Bellagio, Mirage, MGM, Palazzo , and Venetian are not really meant for the player to come up these are mainly for the high rollers or families that just want to have fun. But the word on the street is the smaller and sometimes quaint casinos are the best places to actually get the bang for your buck when it comes to gambling and actually having a chance to win big. Oh and don’t forget to get those free drinks while in the casinos! Once you get your drink on and hit big, (yeah right! LOL) you can hit the strip and catch some of the sites like The Treasure Island Pirate show or The Bellagio Water Show. While you’re walking the strip some may be seduced by these dudes with these cards, just flippin them making some crazy noise trying to get you to purchase ladies of the night. For the low too, but don’t get too caught up! You also will have an array of buffets to hit or places to get a $2.50 beer and hotdog and you could even grab a $5.99 steak and potato dinner. At night the city lights up and as they say “the freaks come out at night”, so have fun and be careful of schemes or robberies. The clubs are unbelievable at least at Prive’ in Planet Hollywood and XS in The Wynn is one of the most outrageous clubs I have ever been in. I mean XS is an indoor-outdoor club with a pool (I mean luxurious pool) and a helicopter in the outdoor area. And be reminded that Vegas clubs are much like Miami “only for the sexy people” and they close around 3 or 4. Also if you’re really amongst the people that love to party there is “Rehab” at The Hard Rock Hotel, which is the all-out go crazy pool party to hit. You and your friends can grab a bottle of whatever or grab a bottle, cabana and be the shit at this spot! Vegas is definitely a must for the novice or avid traveler. The main thing to remember is to bring doe and lots of it, even if you’re not gambling. The weather is extremely hot in the summer months and there is a very short off peak season, so dress light. And please if you know nothing else, always remember “What Happens In Vegas, Stays In Vegas”!

COOK HER A MEAL AND WIN HER OVER

Easy Main Courses 1. Soy Glazed Salmon

Not every man can cook well. Not every man has a desire to cook well, and not every man has to. But what every man does need to realize is that cooking for a woman from time to time is a guaranteed way to impress her. This is why it is important that every man be able to competently cook a few simple meals. The following recipes involve minimal ingredients and very few, uncomplicated steps to follow, but the rewards they bring are priceless. Pay specific attention to the suggestions for presentation. Women love a plate of food that looks as good as it tastes.  The recipe for each entry is followed by a suggestion for a reasonably priced bottle of wine and easily prepared side dishes. Instructions on how to make these side dishes are provided at the end of this article.

64

Ingredients: 2 salmon filets 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup water Directions: 1.    Put all the ingredients minus the fish in a frying pan on low heat. 2.    Stir it until the sugar dissolves and it looks like a sauce. 3.    Put the salmon and the sauce in a sealable plastic bag. 4.    Place the bag in the fridge and let it marinate for 2 hours. 5.    Take the fish and sauce out of the bag and wrap it in tin foil. 6.    Pre-heat the oven to broil. Put the salmon in the oven to broil for about 8 minutes or until the fish no longer looks raw in the middle and flakes easily. Check the color by using a fork to separate the flakes.

WINE AND DINE

4 STEPS TO CHOSE WINE

example, but a brief geography lesson goes a long way. If you face a choice between old-world and new-world wines, play it safe and go old-world. Countries such as France, Italy and Germany have produced wines for countless years. It’s a safe bet to assume that the winemakers there have perfected their processes. This, of course, is not to say that wines from South America or Africa aren’t good. They, and many other new-world producers such as the United States and Australia, make excellent bottles.   A few pointers for your travels: Look for American wines from Oregon and California’s Napa and Sonoma counties; France’s Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne regions produce some of the best wines in the world; Italy’s best come from Tuscany -- look for Chianti in particular, and; Your best bet for a good Australian wine is a Shiraz.

So you’re stuck bringing a bottle of wine over to a friend’s house for a dinner party and have no idea what to buy or where to start. The world of wine can be a complex and intimidating place to the uninitiated, but don’t worry: we’ve got you covered with a few rules of thumb (price doesn’t always rule) that will turn you from rank amateur to, at least, skilled novice. If you’re looking for a few pointers on wine tasting, AM has a number of comprehensive articles on the topic, including a feature on how to taste wine. So here are our 4 steps on how to choose wine. Step 1 Know What you’re Eating When pairing wines with food, you don’t need to drill down to the level of the fine nuances to make an informed choice. All you need are a few simple pairing rules.

Step 3 Narrow Down to a Varietals Varietals are one of those wine words that confuse and intimidates. Don’t let it. The word describes a wine made from a single grape variety, and the varietal tells you a lot about what’s in the bottle. A quick glossary: *Cabernet Sauvignon is a full, rich red wine that goes well with heavier foods such as red meats, game and tomato-based pasta sauces; *Pinot Noir is usually softer than Cabernets, with similar characteristics; *Merlot is one of the lighter reds, and it’s very popular; *Zinfandel is a strong red that’s a Californian specialty; *Syrah is one of the biggest reds, and the best are French and Australian; *Chardonnay is an elegant white with a nice buttery taste, and pairs well with chicken and creamy pasta sauces; *Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp white, great for sipping on summer days and pairing with fish; *Riesling is a sweeter white -- the Germans make the best but the *Californians are also good.

The most important thing to remember is to pair light wines with lighter foods, such as fish, chicken and creamy sauces, and match full-bodied Don’t expect that all wines are made from a single grape varietal. It’s wines with bolder foods, such as beef, game and tomato-based pasta not uncommon to find, for example, Cabernet-Merlot blends. sauces. Traditionally, this rule has been simplified: white wines with fish and chicken and some pork, and reds with beef and game. That’s a good rule of thumb to follow for the beginner, but with a bit of experience, you’ll find you can break the mold a little -- some nice light-bodied reds pair very well with fish and chicken, for example. If spicy foods are on the menu, go for a sweeter wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or Pinot Grigio. If you want a wine just for sipping, Pinot Noir and Cabernets tend to be most accessible. Finally, if it’s a white you’re after, try a Sauvignon Blanc or a Riesling.

66

Step 4 Pick a Year Contrary to popular belief, age isn’t everything when it comes to choosing a wine. While some bottles improve with age, not all do. In fact, most of the commercially available wines you buy may even worsen if you cellar them for too long.

Step 2

When someone talks about a wine’s vintage, they mean only the year in which the wine was produced. Not surprisingly, weather conditions affect grape qualities and output to varying degrees. As a result, some vintages are better than others.

Pick a Region Because soil conditions significantly affect the taste of grapes, a wine’s country of origin is critical to its flavor. That means that a French white can be radically different from a South African, for example.

Most red wines improve with a bit of aging. However, that doesn’t mean you should buy today for a big party in 2011. Usually, wineries don’t release their reds until the bottles have aged for two years. So what’s for sale on the shelf is very drinkable.

When it comes to picking a wine region, no one’s expecting you to know the finer details that set apart French and German whites, for

On the other hand, most whites and sparkling wines don’t need aging. They’re ready to drink right away and can worsen if they’re cellared.

BARBECUING WITH WOOD By Nate Steere Barbecuing With Wood - every guy knows his way around the grill. From making sizzling steaks to the perfect burger, even guys who don’t “cook” can handle themselves in front of a gas grill. If you’ve never cooked with wood, however, you’re in for a treat. Read on for the whys and hows of wood-based smoke, and how it enhances your cooking on the grill. Most people tend to view incorporating wood into their grilling as more trouble than it’s worth. You’ve been having good results with your fiery food adventures so far, so why complicate things, right? The fact is, a little smoky flavor is critical for a good barbecue. However, even steaks and burgers can benefit from a little smoke, and it’s no more complicated than your current grilling setup. So, even if you don’t intend to grill a slab of ribs this weekend, a little smoke will take your cooking to a whole new level.

The Wood Many types of wood can be used for smoking, with different woods best suited to specific types of meat. You can buy them at the store, or if you’re really trying to be the man, go fell a tree and chop it up. Basically, any hardwood will work, but avoid softwoods like pine as the resins don’t make for good flavoring. Avoid any wood that has been treated with chemicals. Use a few handfuls your first time out -- you’ll soon learn how much wood will give a flavor you like. Before we hit the grill, though, the wood needs to be soaked in water -- this is the key to getting good smoke. Wood should be soaked for an hour, and smaller wood chips will be ready in 30 minutes. Classic Woods to Try: Mesquite or hickory: Big and bold, a few handfuls of these kings of the grill are perfect for the barbecue -- especially beef and pork dishes like steaks or chops. Oak: A nice middle-of-the-road wood, oak pairs nicely with seafood or poultry. It can also be mixed with stronger woods to mellow the overall smoke. Oak’s a good slow burner, too.

68

GENTLEMENVIP | VOL. 1 | ISSUE 1

WINE AND DINE Apple or pear: These woods are very mild smoking woods that will do well with poultry. For a real treat, try these with some grilled vegetables. The Meat As mentioned above, different woods pair best with certain kinds of meat, so you’ll need to know what you’re grilling before you buy your wood. What kind of meat works? Start with a rack of ribs, a thick piece of salmon with some pepper and brown sugar, or if you’re feeling ambitious, a turkey. For a great grilled vegetable, try some zucchinis or squash with a red onion. The truth is, any meat or vegetable will work, but smoke is a strong flavor. Think about whether smoke would pair well with the flavor of the meat, and any other flavorings or marinades you’ll be using. If you’re grilling some lemon pepper chicken, smoke will ruin the light citrus flavors. On the other hand, brush that same chicken breast in some barbecue sauce and smoke it? Now you’re talking, sir, now you’re talking. To the Grill There are a few basic tools you’ll need to bring wood to your grilling game. We’ll keep it as simple as possible for your first time out -- while there are whole books written on the subject of barbecuing, some of the basics are universal. Some gas grills offer smoker attachments or even a vertical smoker that stands on the grilling surface, but any gas or charcoal grill can be turned into an improvised smoker. Before you spring for an expensive add-on, try our method below to see if smoked meats are for you. For the Charcoal Grill Place a heavy aluminum foil pan in the center of the charcoal grate, and arrange the briquettes around it. Add an inch of liquid to the bottom of the pan -- water is fine, but barbecue sauce or beer is better. Light the coals and give them time to heat up until they have a light coating of ash -- approximately 30 minutes. Place the wood on top of the coals and give it time to heat to full smoke. When the wood is smoking, place your meat above the foil pan and cover the grill. This indirect heat will cook everything low and slow, giving the smoke and liquid time to marinate. Check the liquid and refill as needed every hour. For the Gas Grill As we said, there are lots of smoking tools for a gas grill, but the improvised method below works fine and is a good way to try out smoking before shelling out cash for an accessory. Take a heavy duty aluminum foil pan and fill it with the soaked wood. Cover the pan with aluminum foil, and poke some holes with a knife so the smoke can escape. Place the pan directly above the burners and set them on high. Once the wood is smoking, place your meat on the cooking grates (the rack up and off the actual grilling surface). Close the grill and wait. The meat will soak up the smoke, and the slower cooking temperature will help preserve the food’s natural juices.

Use a meat thermometer or cut into your meat until you get the hang of how your particular grill handles indirect cooking -- 165 F at the center of a chicken means it’s done. Smoky Stout Chicken Recipe Ingredients 1 4-pound fresh whole chicken 1 bottle Stout beer, any kind 4 tablespoons combination of sage, thyme and bay leaves 3 cloves garlic 1 onion, diced Directions Combine the beer, onions, garlic, and 1 tablespoon of the spice mix you’ve made in a bowl. You can either put this mixture in an aluminum pan or allow its steam to flavor the chicken indirectly, or you can baste your chicken with it, or both. Rub the chicken with the remainder of the spice mix -- cover the chicken thoroughly, and try to even get some under the skin. Use any wood you like for smoking; keep the temperature around 220 degrees until the chicken has a later summer tan, the juices run clear and a thermometer put in the thickest part of the breast reads 165 degrees. Carve and serve.

Tips for Either Grill Type Whichever type of grill you use, keep a few things in mind:   *You’re using your grill more like an oven, so keep the cover on so the heat (and smoke) stays in. *The heat is swirling around your meat like a regular convection oven, so you don’t even have to flip the meat. Just lift your slab to ensure the underside is cooking evenly with the top -- if it’s not then go ahead and flip. *Finally, how will you know when it’s done? Unfortunately, it really depends. The main thing is the size of your grill -- remember we’re cooking using the heated air inside the grill, so how much air is being heated will play a big part. *You’ll speed things up by keeping the lid closed as much as possible so the interior stays hot. Indirect cooking shouldn’t add more than a few minutes to your normal cooking times for burgers or chicken, and you can grill a whole turkey in 2-3 hours.

LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS

HOW TO SCORE AN EX By Sir Fox I know what you’re thinking: “Hell, I’ve scored an ex-girlfriend plenty of times before.” Ah yes, haven’t we all. But did you avoid the seemingly inevitable emotional fallout that occurred directly afterward? Despite any dating or social skills you may have chances are, you didn’t avoid the ensuing firestorm and crawled to safety after suffering near-mortal wounds. I would say, the longer the previous relationship, the worse the damage. However, contrary to popular male belief, it is possible to score one more passionate night without risking life and limb, although it remains a risky proposition. The Player needn’t concern himself with the strangling ties of guilt or unnecessary morality; scoring an ex is a mutual decision that, if done correctly, won’t be regretted in the future. Indeed, there is a fine line between sex and intimacy. One isn’t exactly a requirement for the other. Hence, if you can keep these two facets of an “after-relationship” mutually exclusive, you can make that aforementioned mutual decision with confidence.   It’s nowhere near as complex as it sounds, trust me. But without the proper plan or foundation, you’re heading into battle with plastic suction-cup-tipped darts for ammunition and a frying pan masquerading as a flak jacket. Examine the following tips on how to score an ex, and prepare for an encounter potentially fraught with peril. All this may sound a touch melodramatic, but those who’ve faced down the wrath of a post-coital emotional explosion with your ex know the truth. Let her take control If you want to score an ex, perhaps both of you want this to happen, but she’s gunning for it with just a little more strength and vigor. If you notice this from the start, there’s only one logical path to take: Let her take the reigns and dictate the flow of the evening. It doesn’t take an observation genius to discover her true intentions, and once you’ve confirmed those intentions, why stand in the way of her wishes? On the surface, this appears to be an extraordinarily simple technique -- you don’t have to do a damn thing -- but we’re looking out for your best interests here. We’re preparing for the always intimidating “day after.” When an ex-couple experiences the slip-back and succumbs to temptation, the day-after generally consists of the same repartee, regardless of personality or situation. Both people usually admit it was a mistake, and there’s always the possibility of the blame game. Who seduced whom? Who “wanted” it? Who might want to get back together? Yeah, if you let her take control the night before, the answer will never be you. When the time comes, you can play the perfect role of Mr. Innocent because you are. Granted, it took two to tango, but if she instigated the sexual slip, she won’t have a leg to stand on and you’re in the clear. You’re in a “different place” now When you two were dating, it’s a good bet she wasn’t aware of your growing Player status; otherwise, you probably wouldn’t have started dating in the first place. But now that you’ve bumped into each other again -- and you plan to “bump” in another fashion -- it’s best if she’s aware of your blossoming lifestyle as a ladies man. This doesn’t mean you treat her like a fraternity pal and start boasting about previous conquests; it simply means you drop a few hints that make one thing crystal clear: You’re not interested in relationships, whether they’re long-term or not. You’re at a place in your life where all you want is a little fun, and provided she’s not entertaining any thoughts of a reunion, the two of you can fulfill each other’s needs. For one night and one night only. Not only is this a typical goal of any Player, but it sends the appropriate message ahead of time -- a message that can’t possibly be misinterpreted. Honesty is, at times, the best policy. GENTLEMENVIP | VOL. 1 | ISSUE 1

LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS

TO THE BLACK MAN Posted by P. JASPER I am an extension of you. So your weariness is my problem, too. Allow me, as best I can, to offer you grace, and comfort, and understanding. Relief from the hardship of your journey. I know we Black Women -- your feminine extension -- have been accused of many things, like having: too much drama; too much mouth; too much attitude; too much complaining; and not enough compassion. May this letter serve as a humble attempt to change that script. I want you to exhale. I want you to feel deeply treasured, respected and empowered. I want to be a source of the Peace for which you long. I want the power of my love, my words, my embrace, my actions, to be sufficient to call you Home. I don’t eat the fruit of debate, because that fruit is neither sweet, nor nourishing. Instead, I prefer and seek the fruit of healing and reconciliation. Dialogue is a part of this process. But I don’t want to spin my wheels in hostile rants about who hurt whom first, and who hurt whom worst. Instead, I intend to invest my energy in: having a heart that is larger than the offenses that could turn me bitter; having a heart that is deeper than the disappointments and wounds that could make me cynical; having a heart that is wider than the historical and social injustices we, as Blacks in America, share. I will be informed by history (both cultural and personal), but I will neither be limited by it, nor indentured to it. I insist on the possibilities that you and I could have. And my insistence requires me to defy some gravity, revoke some realities. Cling to what could be until it is. I am not your antagonist. I am not your competitor. I am not your judge or critic or victim. I am, undeniably, a part of you. And you are an undeniable part of me. What if we were to agree that our mutual well-being would be the most important thing? What if I decided, that as of this moment, I wouldn’t be a part of conversations or choices that undermine you? I wouldn’t lend my voice to the clamor of your perceived short-comings? (I’m not denying that some of these complaints are valid, Precious. But rehearsing them over and over builds nothing constructive.) And what if you decided, from this moment on, you wouldn’t be a part of conversations and choices that undermine me? Can you imagine the progress we’d make if we vowed to be each other’s protector? For you, for me, and for everyone else with a human heart: love is high-risk. It is, in fact, the highest risk of all, because it also offers the highest reward of all. It’s probable that anyone who ever dared to love, has incurred some wounds and losses. But, please, let’s not make a universal reality (the reality that love is high-risk) into a personal battle between us. The broken-heartedness we’ve endured isn’t so much a statement about Black Men or Black Women, as it is about our most basic need for love, and our tendency to sometimes louse it up. Demographics and other social factors can make the conversation about Black Love more complex; and often more complex than it needs to be. People all over the world wrestle with and wonder how to be in a mature and loving relationship. And as we, Blacks in America, wrestle and wonder, let’s not wrongfully demonize each other. Let’s, instead, get real serious about healing and renewing ourselves recovering from failed relationships readying ourselves to be capable, huge-hearted lovers. Poised and prepared for when we get our next chance at Conscious Love. Determined that, this time, we will give what we want to have. GENTLEMENVIP | VOL. 1 | ISSUE 1

SEX TIPS

MORNING SEX One of the many differences between the sexuality of men and women is that men tend to enjoy morning sex, while women mostly prefer to keep bedroom activity reserved for nighttime. This probably has a lot to do with what is referred to as Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT), which causes a man without erectile dysfunction to have three to five erections as he sleeps. NPT is more commonly referred to as “morning wood” or “morning glory.” Whatever you call it, waking up with an erection is as good a reason as any to initiate a little early action. Unfortunately, your girl may not be in the mood the minute she opens her eyes, but if you approach it properly she will very quickly be just as into morning sex as you are.

Gently Wake Her

Prepare the Night Before

Your girl may not feel very sexy when she first wakes up, so to get her in the mood be sure to tell her how beautiful she is -- even if she’s a bit of a mess. Ignore the disheveled hair, the pillow creases on her face and her less-than-pleasant morning breath, and tell her how badly you want her. If you find it difficult to keep a straight face while telling her how hot she is first thing in the morning, try using a position that doesn’t put you face to face. Spooning her from behind is romantic and sensual, while it also conveniently allows you to avoid the misery of morning breath.

In order to avoid having to get out of bed in the morning before initiating your early loving’ you should do some preparation the night before. Keep some breath mints near the bed so you can quickly take care of your that breathe before things start to get sexy. Also, be sure to go to the bathroom before you go to sleep to prevent having to get up to take a leak as soon as you wake up. Don’t forget to have a condom ready to go. Set Your Internal Alarm It’s important to wake up early enough to get a little action in before either of you are due at work. So, set your internal alarm clock to wake you up with enough time to enjoy a little morning make-out time to start your day. It’s best if you can wake up before her so you can rouse her into consciousness with your smooth moves. Remember, you might be ready to go, but it could take a while for her to get warmed up, so factor this in when you’re figuring out how much time you will need for your morning sex. Morning sex could mean the difference between a good day and a great day ...

Your woman most likely does not want to be greeted immediately by your erect penis waving in her face, so take it easy. Touch her softly and slowly. Give her little kisses all over her face and body. Let your fingers play with her hair. This sensual approach will ensure that she wakes up in a positive, loving mood and makes it much more likely that she’ll take pleasure in morning sex. If you need more tips for waking a sleeping woman, check out our piece on How to Seduce a Sleeping Woman Make Her Feel Sexy

Start Your Day with a Bang Getting busy in the morning can be an excellent start to your day. It gets the feel-good hormones pumping and puts a smile on your face, making it much easier to put up with whatever hassles your day brings. Like anything, having morning sex every single day will get old after a while, especially for your girlfriend who typically does not peak sexually in the morning hours like you do, so be sure to mix it up and get busy at other times of the day too. And there you have it; some easy ways to keep her satisfied and get a little satisfaction of your own at the same time.

SEX TIPS

SEX ADVICE FROM A FEMALE few martinis to get into the mood. Best of all, he never makes you late for dinner because he’s playing Play Station 2 or Xbox.

5 Types of Men Every Woman Wants So, you want a boyfriend. You’re sick of the singles scene and ready to move right past “Go” and settle down with someone who will carry you straight into your happily ever after. Well, hold it right there, Miss AntsyPants! Before you go tango into the sunset with Mr. Right, you have to take a few spins around the dating dance floor with a few Mr. Right Nows. Dating different personality types is the most effective way to find out your likes, dislikes and deal breakers. In fact, spending time with the wrong guys -- namely these five -- can actually make you a better package when Mr. Fabulous comes along. 1. Mr. Nice Romantic Guy He’ll show up with flowers, leave cards around your apartment. Think old-fashioned courtship where you’re being wooed instead of sitting by the phone wondering if he’ll call. What he’ll teach you: This affectionate man will show you a softer side of our male counterparts all the while raising your expectations of how you wish to be treated. After realizing that there are guys out there who understand the importance of a random note or kiss in the moonlight, you’ll be less likely to stay with someone who degrades or ignores you in the future. The catch: Most of the time, these guys are in love with the idea of love. This means they will come on strong but lose momentum in the long haul as the reality of a relationship sets in, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t date him and enjoy the experience. Just keep a level head while he floats around you. 2. Mr. Big Shot He dresses sharp, talks slick and has the perfectly coiffed looks of a man straight out of a GQ magazine. One look at him in his tailored suit and you’re toast -- which is exactly why he wears it. What he’ll teach you: From sending your nether regions to Brazil (Mr. Big Shot doesn’t do granny panties) to the proper way to age a Cabernet, you’re in for a crash course in the finer way of life. Dinners will be four-star and the conversation will be witty. You’ll walk away from this relationship more sophisticated and well aware of your own inner vixen. The catch: As the 007 of romance, he’s going in for the kill. He knows exactly what he’s doing and the effect it’s having on you -- and every other girl around him. The odds of this guy slipping out of his suit and into a comfy relationship are low, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the smooth ride around the town while it lasts. 3. Mr. Sexy Older Guy He’s old enough to have settled into his skin and has been involved with enough women to know that you require much more than dinner and a

76

What he’ll teach you: He has a lifetime of experience to share (in and out of the bedroom), which will likely keep you on your toes (and curling them, too!). Plus, he’ll show you how to see life in a different way. No matter how long it lasts or how it ends, you’ll walk away worldlier -- and will never settle for a measly five minutes of foreplay again. The catch: Despite what Demi and Ashton might say, age is more than a number. If you are just starting to get comfortable in your skin and he’s shed his several times, there is a good chance you’ll have issues with long-term compatibility. Sure, he’s hot now, but how will you feel in 10 years? Give one another a thrill, and then move onto someone you both can relate to. 4. Mr. Man’s Man He carries your bags, will defend your honor and would rather swallow glass than shave his chest. What he’ll teach you: This rough rogue will have you relishing in your femininity like no other. Why? There is something about raw masculinity that brings out the damsel in all of us. Dating this bruiser will show you how fun it can be when he shows you who the man is. Dating him will do one of two things: make you squeal with delight or appreciate your ability and right to wear the pants sometimes. Regardless, be sure to play Gabrielle Union at least once -- trust us. The catch: You’re dying to be wined and dined, but he’s already made plans to meet you down at the pub. This is the guy who gets inspired by Scareface and cries only “out of frustration.” He’s also prone to affairs… with his favorite sports teams. Oh, and forget about asking him to hold your purse while you do anything -- he wouldn’t dare. 5. Mr. Fun Social Guy Whether he’s out with friends or meeting the family for brunch, one thing’s for certain: He’s going to be the life of the party. What he’ll teach you: There is something very attractive about a man who’s always ready to have a good time. You’ll laugh a lot and learn how to go with the flow and let things slide. These types are often quite spontaneous, which means you should be ready for anything from a quickie to a quick dash to Vegas. The catch: Most people are social because they like the company of others, but Fun Social Guys are social because they love to be the center of attention -- and they love the excitement of something new. This poses an issue for long-term loves because: A) Who wants to be an audience member 24/7, and B) Let’s face it: Relationships can get dull at times -- what will he do then? Enjoy the roller-coaster ride, but don’t be afraid to walk away to more stable ground.

V103 2009 CAR SHOW By Al ‘AlCaps’ Johnson Anybody that is a car enthusiast tries to get to as many car functions as possible. Especially when you can get advance tickets for $10.00, which is great during this so called “Recession”. The car show had cars showing from all over Georgia, Music Videos, Local & International Stars and car enthusiast. There was also a concert featuring Big Boi from the group Outkast, Bobby Valentino, Playaz Circle and Jeremih amongst others performing and putting it down. The car show also featured cars from well known entertainment stars from Atlanta like V-103’s Wanda Smith, GrandHustle Record’s own T.I. and Dro, CTE’s own Young Jeezy, new music artist Sean Garrett, Atlanta Falcons Defensive Back DeAngelo Hall, and Music Mogul Divine Stevens. This year for 2009 the Car Show started off a little shaky with a change of venue from the previous year, in which it was held on the Southside of Atlanta at the Georgia Convention Center to downtown Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress. This is a great venue with a gang of space for all of the vehicles and is usually where the International Auto-Show is held. The Show had all types of vendors on site with everything from Mix Tapes to BoostMobile and food, there was even a guy in an old school Limo Cadillac DJ’ing out of the trunk with the digital turn-tables pushing mix-tapes. They even had adult beverages for those who needed a nip while cruising through looking at all the rides. For this year, there were a lot of tricked out rides that were done in different ways from the past. There were Chargers and Magnums with the backdoor sliding down looking something like a beam me up Scottie pad. The owners also went all out for their paint jobs this year not only having that wet candy paint, but going for murals, graphics and beast characters. Motorcycles were also a big hit for the Car Show, with everything from custom street bikes or “Crotch Rockets” as one of my elder comrades calls them to the badass custom Choppers. For those of you that like ATV’s, they also showcased four wheelers custom for your off-road riding with chrome and candy paint. The only thing is in previous years the stars were interacting more with the fans, being out and around the people signing auto-graphs. But this year it seems as though they were more about themselves and backstage where no one could see them until their performance. This could have been for security purposes though, because this year the attendance was great and the place was thick. So make sure the next time the Car Show is in your area whether the International Auto-Show or a local show sponsor by a Radio or TV station, check it out!

1969 GENERAL LEE DODGE CHARGER Like Daisy Duke and her namesake Daisy Dukes, the General Lee just keeps getting better with age. In fact, when it comes to style and performance, Dodge Chargers in “general” simply stand the test of time. With the exciting new styling’s proposed by the Dodge boys for the 2010 concept, it looks like the Dodge Charger is only gonna get hotter. Perhaps it’s time we look into giving the General a modern makeover.

2010 DODGE CHARGER Have you been looking for spy photos of the upcoming 2010 Dodge Charger? I found a couple of artist renders and they look terrific.  They looked so good that I kept hunting for new information about the ‘10.  It looks like Dodge wants to go back to a 2-door “Coke-bottle” side view with integrated front headlights, but separate rear tail lights. Word on the net is that they want to equip the new model with different types of engines, the usual suspects apply; 3.0 Phoenix V6 for export, 3.6 Phoenix V6 280hp, 5.7 Hemi MDS 340hp and the 6.4 Hemi SRT 440hp. The 2010 Charger should be less boxy to help reduce road noise and improve gas mileage. The all-around performance should improve as well, with more horsepower expected from the revised V6 and Hemi engines.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN SHAVING TIPS

Shaving Black Men Prevent and Cure Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs By Ronald Ingles

MOST MEN HAVE SUFFERED from ingrown hairs or razor bumps at one point or another, and a large percentage of men must deal with the condition on a regular basis. This is especially true for African-American men. Because black men have body hairs that are predominantly curly and wiry, shaved hair follicles tend to curve back and re-enter the skin as they grow, causing irritation and razor bumps. Ingrown hairs can also occur when hair doesn’t fully emerge from the skin’s surface and instead sits coiled underneath, leading to bumps and possible infection. This reoccurring condition causes major discomfort in the beard and neck area and can affect black men for years and years at a time. The best course of action seems to be to give up shaving altogether-by not shaving the hair, it obviously doesn’t have a chance to grow back improperly and cause razor bumps. But in a society that prizes clean-shaven appearances, this is not an option for most black men. Instead, follow these simple men’s grooming tips to keep African-American skin smooth and refreshed, and correctly treat ingrown hairs. Always use a sharp razor blade and discard old blades after 4-5 uses. You might think this is excessive, but dull blades force black men to go over the same area of skin again and again, increasing the chances of irritation and improperly cutting hair. This goes for electric razors, too: replace the blades after every few months of use. Reduce your number of shaves by shaving every other day. Giving the skin time to heal will allow hairs to grow straight through the skin’s surface, without forcing too-short hairs back into the skin. Frequent shaving too close to the skin will trap hairs inside the follicles. Exfoliate! Exfoliating with a gentle scrub like Men Science’s Microfine Face Scrub removes the top layer of dead cells and allows hairs to grow out more easily. It also helps soften skin, clears pores and evens out patchy skin tones.

82

Many African-American men benefit from using a single-blade razor, or a DE razor. Men Science Medical Director Dr. Joely Kaufman explains, “I highly dissuade patients who suffer from razor bumps from using triple or quadruple blade razor systems. The closer the shave, the worse the razor bumps will be.” Always shave in the direction of hair growth. While shaving upward seems to give a closer shave, shaving in the hair’s direction reduces irritation and the likelihood of hairs growing back into the skin. Don’t pull skin taut when shaving since this can also cause ingrown hairs to form. Soften hairs before shaving by massaging warm water into the beard area and then applying a professional-grade, highly-lubricating shave cream, like Men Science’s Advanced Shave Formula. Allow it to sit on the face for a minute or two to completely coat hairs before shaving. Follow a shave with an after-shave solution that contains hydrating ingredients like aloe, witch hazel and tea tree extract like Men Science’s PostShave Repair to cut down on redness and discomfort. Stay away from products that contain alcohol since this can dry skin out and provoke an ashy appearance in black skin. Resist the urge to simply pluck ingrown hairs out. A new hair will just grow again, and you’ll be facing the same exact problem. Most importantly, take your time when shaving. Everyone’s been guilty of the 30-second shave on Monday morning, but shaving slowly and with care can dramatically reduce nicks, cuts and abrasions that can aggravate razor bumps. If you find that you are suffering from severe cases of inflammation or razor bumps, talk to your doctor or dermatologist. You may be a candidate for electrolysis (a low-level current is used to destroy follicles) or skin depilatories (chemical creams that soften and minimize growth).

HOW TO WEAR COLOGNE Why Cologne Is & Where It Goes

Cologne is man’s best friend. Women love great smelling men... We sometimes make the mistake of wearing one type of cologne, when we should wear different scents to identify who we are. We wear more than one pair of shoes; we should have more than one scent to put on. Choosing the right scent for the right occasion is harder than we know. If you choose wisely, a few people will know and appreciate your smell. Choose the wrong scent and put on to much it would be your worst enemy. Hear are some helpful tips. When and Where to Wear Cologne?

Woods

We could wear cologne to almost anywhere and generally be accepted. But cologne almost becomes a necessary fashion accessory when going out at night. A light citrus-based scent is perfect for an afternoon outing, but a special evening out calls for a stronger scent with spice undertones or musky notes that will mix with your own natural pheromones.

Burberry London for Men: A mature scent suitable for business occasions and daytime use, Burberry London for Men conjures an old-world mix of bergamont, cinnamon, pepper, lavender, port, mimosa, moss, tobacco leaf, leather, and opoponax.

Where to Spray Cologne? Applying cologne is more important than you think. A little under each ear a little on your neck ensures that a woman leaning in close to talk will take note of your scent. Your face and chin are the obvious spots, but your chest is the best location for the cologne to mix with your own natural scent and slowly make itself known as it wafts toward your collar. When to Wear It? You’ll need more than one cologne, since what you apply for the daylight hours simply won’t meet the mood and atmosphere of the night. A light citrus scent or woods-based scent is perfect for daytime activities, like work. Nighttime, however, requires a scent with deeper mystery. Thus, you’ll want to use a cologne with spicy notes or a musk-based scent.

Musk Gucci Pour Homme II: Undeniably modern, incontrovertibly masculine... Gucci Pour Homme II combines black tea, bergamot, tobacco, cinnamon, wood, and musk that create a subtle musk surely meant for the night.

How Much to Wear? Treat your cologne as a secret you share with only a few people -- or at least those within your close personal space. Apply a very sparse amount under each ear and on your torso. You may not think this is enough, but cologne actually mixes with your body and intensifies over time. Far too many men make the mistake of applying more because they cannot smell it when they first spray it on, or they shake out a palm full because think they need more. The truth is: well-chosen cologne applied in small amounts will get your more attention than if you bathed in it. Scent Types

Citrus LaCoste Elegance A light, mature scent with plenty of floral fragrance notes mixed with citrus creates an almost effortless second skin. This is a daytime scent meant to be worn with ease. Splash on just a bit before heading out the door and you’ll be fine all day. Common Scents Cologne often gets a bad reputation from all those would-be Lotharios out there overcompensating with scents in a vain attempt to make up for other shortcomings. But real men do wear cologne; they just don’t pour it over themselves. Take a moment and think about whom you are and what you do. Where will you wear your new cologne? More importantly, who will get close enough to you to notice your scent? Always remember: Choose wisely and apply sparingly.

Spice John Varvatos Vintage: First introduced in 2006, John Varvatos Vintage is the perfect scent for a romantic evening. A mix of tamarind leaves, herbs and dates, with spice, woods, leather, and vanilla, Vintage is a modern masculine scent.
