The 2020 Start-ups

Whether you’re a farmer, builder or engineer, the opportunities are equal: Just add a little innovation. Strive Masiyiwa, Executive Chairman & Founder of the Econet Group

Time to Pivot Written by Puno Selesho

2020 has twisted, turned and twirled us between its fingers Crushed us between its months Tugged at all our corners and left us feeling undone A pressure pot of chaos A jam jar of jagged edges  Ups and downs round and round  Yes and no’s, stops and go But maybe, just maybe, from these fires our truest truth will be forged Innovators. Leaders and Creators raise your head It is time to start up to scale up To stand up for what is yours If it all hadn’t burnt to the ground or fallen a part You would never know the fresh joy that comes with a new start With shaking arms and a boldness of heart Hold your passions and ambitions up high Keep shouting your YES to the uncertain sky   Strap on your story, cling tight to your hope Woman. The world waits for your wisdom and wonder to unfold With great anticipation we await what your knowing hands hold You are a force, powerful enough to bend and break boundaries

To make room for bigger for better for brighter Africa. Our time is now. We have stood by the giants of the world in this same fight  We have proven that we too are made of courage and might  With our ideas and crafts may we continue to radiate light  2020 has twisted, turned and twirled us But we will: Re-deem Re-discover Re-design & Re-assign Re-generate Re-create Re-new & Re-generate  Africa, it is time to pivot.

Cape Town prides itself on being a city of ideas, opportunity and innovation. As Africa’s Leading Digital City, the City of Cape Town is pleased to partner with the South African Innovation Summit for its 2020 virtual conference. The SA Innovation Summit is an exciting event bringing together the world’s top innovators, while also developing and nurturing some of the country’s emerging entrepreneurs.

The work done by local innovators has seen Cape Town being consistently ranked as one of the top technology innovation hubs in the world, including being the only African city to be included on the Savills Top 30 Tech Cities in the World. Cape Town’s ability to provide investors access to world-class infrastructure, talent, capital, lifestyle, investment incentives, access to Africa and an ecosystem of quality start-ups, have been one some of the reasons venture capitalists choose to establish a presence here. The City’s support of the SA Innovation Summit has always sought to ensure Cape Town, South African and African innovation is

showcased to the world. The event is taking place online during a time the world is grappling with a pandemic, but we want to assure investors that Cape Town is safe and open for business. We look forward to sharing ideas on how our quality infrastructure and tools have enabled us to grow as a tech hub. All the best, Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town Dan Plato

08 Jean-Louise Parker What happens when two musicians share a home and a global pandemic strikes? You guessed it, IMRI happened. We’re two friends that got to know each other in the streets of Melville and moved into a house share about a year ago. Ricky has been making beats for about 8 years and Imke has been singing her whole life and started writing songs about 11 years ago. This project came together in the early stages of lockdown. The process was simply effortless and in about a week and a half 8 tracks were

born and another 2 remastered. We’re really stoked to share this project with the world as both of us feel strongly represented in the music we’ve created in those magic weeks in lockdown. Currently we’re busy finishing recording and hopefully will have an EP or album available by the end of the year! Instagram handle: @i.m.r.i.bandker

11 Schalk Bezuidenhout Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in a very Afrikaans, ‘bring-backApartheid’ town right next to the airport in Johannesburg. In Kempton Park the traditional Afrikaans way of living was a good life. Your mother’s breast milk would be brannewyn en coke and you would walk kaalvoet to school. His family and friends stood back as they watched Schalk evolve

from an Afrikaans conservative caterpillar into a beautiful dramaqueen butterfly, complete with a moustache and furry afro. It was obvious to Schalk’s parents that he would study drama, and to help numb the pain they sent him away to study at the University of Cape Town.
