President’s Letter
Dear friends, I thank all of you for the success of the FD Class during 2005 and 2006. In 2005, the number of IFDCO members and boats competing in the World Championship in Hungary confirm and show the continued interest in the FD and our Class activity. Congratulation to the Spartacus Sailing Club for the organization of the World Championship. Moreover, the good number of teams attending the Euro Cup events and the World Cup show that the strategy to link specific races scheduled in different countries seems to kindle the interest of the sailors to increase their participation in the races abroad and to be involved in the Class life. Many thanks to all the clubs organizing the FD races every year, since they help our Class to support and continue organizing classical events, a tradition in the annual FD fixtures. With regard to the women FD teams, Peggy Bahr, ex Olympic 470 sailor from Germany, started to sail FD with her husband Torsten as crew. Peggy had a very good result in the Worlds in Hungary and won the FD Ladies’ Cup 2005: congratulations and best wishes for her future sailing activity in FD!! With regard to the technical matters, 2005 also represents the beginning of a new age, since is the first year in which the adoption of carbon masts is allowed. The number of carbon riggings immediately adopted by the teams from every country and especially the number of carbon masts measured during the World Championship (about 30 %) show a good interest of the sailors for this new step in the technical development of the FD. Moreover, during this first year some carbon profiles manufacturers from different countries in the world (UK, Australia, Italia, etc.) started to produce carbon riggings (mast, boom and spinnaker pole) with different profiles, stiffness and
fitting. They are competing since the beginning to develop, test and evolve their profiles and reach the best quality and performance. This competition among the manufacturers will allow the carbon riggings to have a speedy evolution; moreover, it increases the interest of the teams to compare different technical solutions: I think this first step will be faster than we expected and will project our Class speedily into the future. Also in 2005, another very important news item in our Class life was the beginning of a Sponsorship Agreement between IFDCO and HARKEN SAILING WEAR: during this first three years sponsorship contract, HARKEN SAILING WEAR will supply our Class with several clothes of their sportswear collections. After the fall-winter collection 2005-2006, HARKEN Sailing Wear will produce several models inspired by the FD’s history and emotion. Those clothes, reporting both the HARKEN and the IFDCO Logos, will be available for each FD Class member with a special discount. In detail, the Crew Collection will always be available with several clothes (jackets, polo’s, gilets, t-shirts etc.) in several colours and sizes; moreover, every year HARKEN will develop and produce a fall-winter and spring-summer collection, in which some articles will be selected showing the IFDCO Logo. Since this year it will be possible to check the HARKEN Sportswear Collections with the FD Logo on the IFDCO website; moreover there will be a link between the IFDCO and the HARKEN website. Together with the a lot of enthusiastic sailors who granted the worldwide success of the FD Class, HARKEN will be inspired by the most distinguished feature of the FD Class: to be in the race for high-tech and innovative solutions. For the same reason IFDCO chose HARKEN Sailing Wear as brand to produce the sportswear for the FD teams. IFDCO, selling the sportswear to the Class members, will collect money to spend for Class promotion, advertisement and activities; for instance, it will be very important to help the young and new FD sailors, increasing their participation in specific events and supporting the transport of boats attending the World Championships overseas. For 2006, the first result of that strategy has been possible, when every container shipped to USA to attend the Worlds in St Petersburg had a grant of 900 e .That represents just the first step of the IFDCO activities to support our teams; anyway, that process requires time and the cooperation of Class members, National Secretaries, etc. to show
3
and improve the advantages for the sailors. Also, 2006 represented a year of further successes: more events and more sailors participating. The sailing season started with the World Championship in St Petersburg (USA) where 35 boats coming from 11 countries attended the event. It was the second time we were guests of the St Petersburg Yachting Club, since we already sailed a World Championship there in 1997.Anyway, great club, kind hospitality, perfect organization, beautiful weather: a fully successful event !! My best congratulations and thanks to the club and the Organizing Committee. The sailing activity went on, showing an increasing number of sailors attending the classical races, and particularly the Euro Cup events (122 teams, from 14 countries on the Euro Ranking List). The Dawes Cup (World Ranking List) for 2006 will be awarded in Spain at the World Championship. In July, the European Championship organized in Austria by the Neusiedl Sailing Club had a great participation of 63 teams from 13 countries. In spite of the wind that was always very light the club and the Race Committee have been able to complete 5 races. Again kind hospitality and good organization: many thanks to all the people engaged in such a successful event. During 2006, the success of the carbon rigging increased and about 40% of the fleet adopted the carbon profiles. That choice confirms, as I said in 2005, that the carbon improvement and their increasing number in the Class is faster than we expected and will project our Class speedily into the future. The season 2006 finished with the "Conrad Gulcher Trophy", a classical event for the FD Class, as always very well organized by the Loosdrecht Sailing Club; moreover, the Conrad Gulcher 2006 was a great chance to celebrate Clé Jeltes for his engagement and passion dedicated to the FD and IFDCO development, since the launch of FD in 1952. A party was organized and it was an excellent chance to thank Clé for his role in the history of the FD Class: he has been engaged for several years both as International and Olympic Measurer, IFDCO V.P.Technical and Chief Measurer, IFDCO Officer responsible for the archive and the Measurement Certificates issue; moreover, since 30 years Clé was editor of the FD Bulletin. Since many years, Clé was also IFDCO Honorary Secretary and now, he is going to leave FD Class activity, attending the AGCM and giving suggestion and information to all of us. Now the entire job done only by Clé, who dedicated all of his days to the FD Class, has been inherited by some IFDCO Officers. Dear Clé, you have been able to know the FD, the Class, the sailors and to represent IFDCO all over the world, more than any of us: we thank you very much and appreciate your engagement. In detail, Zsofia Csanda, already Commodore of the Eastern European Countries, started to become responsible for the IFDCO archive and to issue the Measurement Certificates, since last September. With regard to the FD Bulletin, since last De-
4
cember three young Dutch sailors, Sjors Riemslag, Casper Schaaf and Louk Nelissen, have been engaged as the team of editors of the next FD Bulletins. Dear FD sailors, dear IFDCO members, excuse us, if that process has required time and caused some miscarriage and difficulty: for that reason we have missed the FD Bulletin in 2006 and had a stop and delay to issue the Measurement Certificates. Anyway, I ensure you that the IFDCO team approach and the friendship among all the Officers, the Commodores, the Sub Committees and the National Secretaries is the best way to continue promoting, advertising and developing the FD Class on all levels. We are engaged to undersign sponsorships to support the Class activities and events, update and improve the website to advertise and promote the Class and develop boats and rigging to projecting the FD into the future. I believe that those new aspects of Class life are becoming more and more important to optimize number of sailors, new generation teams, events, etc. Let's commit ourselves all together in order to support and quicken that process!! Finally, let me express my personal feelings and sadness for the deaths of Ann and John Truett which happened last year in a few months. They sailed together in FD for several years and dedicated a lot of time and energy to the IFDCO. With their ideas, suggestions and commitment they supported Class life and activity for many years; moreover, when I knew them more than ten years ago they helped me with their experience and suggestions to learn what it means to manage our Class. So, I started to become engaged as Commodore and then as IFDCO President, with Ann as General Secretary; moreover, I cherished them as good friends!! Personally and on behalf of IFDCO I express our feelings to their sons Allistair and Jonathan and, remembering Ann and John, I go on to love our Class. Alberto
News from the editors ! Dear FD sailors, Finally the big moment is there: you are holding a brand new issue of the FD Bulletin! It has been a bit of a struggle to get things together, but after all the editorial team is happy with what it can present you with, fellow FD sailors! We are proud to be able to continue the magnificant work of “The Godfather of FD–sailing” Clé Jeltes, the driving force of the Bulletin for so many, many years. After a period of finding our way in all the difficulties of editing a magazine of the FD class, we understood how important Clé Jeltes has been for our class, how numerous the contacts he had and how much time he spent on our beloved class. We will do our very best to continue the Bulletin in the spirit of Clé, and that’s why we did not make significant changes in the layout and format of the Bulletin. However, if there are suggestions, comments or ideas in that matter, do not hesitate to contact us, of course we will always welcome your input and feedback. Please contact us at fdbulletin@gmail.com. We would like to express our warm thanks to all the people who helped us realise our first issue. To mention a few: Clé Jeltes, Alberto Barrenghi, Fred Schaaf, and the publisher, SportserviceNoordholland BV, who was willing to assist us in many ways. We also are grateful to all of you who gave a quick response to our e-mails, allowing us with something to actually publish! To all of you many thanks! We really do hope you will enjoy the Bulletin as we all did in the past, and for the coming season we wish you happy sailing !!!!! The Editorial Board, Sjors Riemslag Casper Schaaf Louk Nelissen
Clé Jeltes’ farewell diner In all probability Clé is still the most well-known personality in the FD class. From its beginning in 1952 he’s been closely involved with the class’ national and international organisation. During many WC’s and EC’s he has been a place of rest in the measurement process. If conflict arose between sailors and measurers, the Olympic days included, his judgement was accepted by everyone. The FD filled a large part of his existence and this made him the only real FD professional. For many years he was a NFDO committee member and up until this moment he’s been in the IFDCO as well. During the last couple of years some of the tasks started to become a physical burden for him: the reason why he transferred some tasks to other IFDCO members during the last season. This was to be formally arranged this summer at the EC in Neusiedl. Although the transfer took place, a dignified international farewell to Clé never happened. Of course preparations for this had been made, but Clé had to return home suddenly because of his health problems and, therefore, the planned ceremony couldn’t go through. It was at Neusiedl that new arrangements were already made to repeat this at a better time. The
place of action was to be Loosdrecht, during the Gulcher regatta in October. Once the place of birth for the FD, Loosdrecht would be a worthy place for such an event. It was also arranged that some IFDCO members would be present there and that Clé would be given his farewell while enjoying a joyful diner. For this we were required to take refuge at “Heineke”, because the FJ class was celebrating her 50th anniversary and accordingly occupied the whole KWVL club house. However, these familiar surroundings for many FD sailors proved to be a very nice location. A good attendance of Dutch, German, British and Swedish FD sailors, together with Alberto Barenghi, John Best and Zsofia Csanda representing the IFDCO, formed the backdrop for this well-spirited meeting. Alberto had arranged a good-looking trophy in Italian style, which was given to Clé after a warm speech and accompanied by thunderous applause. As is usual during such events, you can see Clé thinking on the one hand that all this fuss is a little exaggerated, while on the other hand you can also see him enjoying himself and probably being a little proud as well. I hope these last emotions
Fellow sailors!
gave us some ideas that hadn’t been invented yet. “Who made that preliminary design?” Uus van Essen, then working as measurer in service of the Dutch Yacht Federation. The mission I’d set myself was this: find the boats that run the fastest and find out why they do this. So we just went past all the boat types in magazines and race reports. Some boats appeared to be extremely fast. Besides this we also wondered: “What results do boats of the same size achieve?”You can find this out by studying the times they clocked.
A lot has been written about our beautiful boat, but this article which appeared in a book by yacht designer and sailing connoisseur Jaap Kramer is definitely worth a glance. In 1963 Jaap Kramer spoke to FD-inventor Conrad Gülcher and published this in his book Watersport (1964), one of the canonical works in Dutch sailing history. The same publisher, Uitgeverij Hollandia, also published the book written by our well-known fellow FD-man Paul de Schipper: The Flying Dutchman, the story of a wonder boat (2001), a work no sailing library can do without! The Flying Dutchman blasts around the world Promotor Coen Gülcher tells Jan Kramer how the FD came into birth and has gained ever more speed along the way. The 1951 European Championships in Loosdrecht showed that the newly designed Tornado has not been a success. After this I asked engineer Loeff: “Can’t we design a new hull under the same sailing plan?” This wasn’t so easy, because the Tornado had just been accepted as new international class. Eventually engineer Loeff said:“Very well, it’s now half way in August. The International Yacht Racing Union meeting starts at November 1st. If you, before that date, manage to create a design, test it and prove that it’s a fine ship faster than the Tornado I’m willing to support the new design at the meeting.” “This was no small feat!” No, but we went to it right away and created a preliminary design first. This was done by the beginning of September. We sent this to the thirty best helmsmen I knew – not designers, because they won’t give up their secrets anyway – with the request to give it their comments. Within fourteen days seventeen replies came in.These included some rather valuable ones, especially from England, that showed us mistakes we had made and
eventually held sway with him. While Alberto was there, it was a good occasion to present the IFDCO Ladies’ Trophy together with Clé, which accompanied by ample applause of course succeeded wonderfully. Clé I hope you enjoyed yourself, you deserve it. On behalf of all the FD community, thank you. Fred Schaaf
“So this involved quite some research?” Yes, a lot of research went into this. Actually, already stemming from the time people were talking about the Tornado. Ever since then I’d decided to study this, all the time asking myself: “What are the variables you have to choose?” When the Tornado emerged I was already in the final stages of my work and only needed some finishing touches. “How did this evolve itself?” Using the received advices and criticism we created a new design in a week, whereupon we managed to make a mould and a hull in less than one. “That was done in moulded ply-wood?” Yes, Van de Brink in Stompwijk made it. He was well acquainted with jobs like this. “The materials used were both light and strong, allowing for relative freedom on the part of the designer.” Exactly.A light weight was one of the main points in the design. All this, by the way, was done under supervision of engineer Loeff. “You had a very valuable combination there: a young, progressive designer, tips on the latest techniques from all over the world and a relative conservative expert like engineer Loeff to provide all this with his critical view. Sounds ideal.” Yes, because at first we were thinking along the
lines of, for example, a ‘Scow’. Next to catamarans scows are the fastest boats around. Engineer Loeff, however, didn’t like this idea at all.
“He wanted a real ship?” A real ship that was fast at the same time. That’s why the new design received the stern of a scow and a normal front. “And when were you able to sail it?” Well, in a week we had created the hull, inserted a centreboard case and fitted it with Tornado rigging. The whole thing eventually sailed on November 1st. “So you created a new hull to put under the Tornado rig?” This had absolutely been the starting idea, but gradually we altered the Tornado rigging piece
5
by piece. The mast and jib got a little higher and the boom a little shorter. We provided it with a better spinnaker and a bigger genoa. And a trapeze!! “The trapeze was just coming into use at that time, right?” Well, no one used it yet. As early as 1928 Peter Scott sailed a race in Canada using a trapeze. And won! It resulted in the immediate prohibition of the use of the trapeze. But when we were discussing the new boat Peter Scott said:“Give her a trapeze, that’s powerful stuff!” So that’s how the trapeze got into the story. It was gradually perfected and came into popularity in other classes as well. “How did the FD become a class boat?” We immediately organised a whole series of trials. First in Holland, in 1952, because us Dutchmen had come up with the idea. Thirty different boats coming from eight different nations participated; every type had one boat representing them and every nation wanted to send their best boat, making it a gathering of the best the world had to offer. And the FD won! Upon this she was declared International class for the mid-European countries. But England and France were not satisfied. “Why not?” They argued that such a low, straight boat couldn’t sail on the sea. And the French were afraid her big length would make manoeuvring on rivers too hard. Because of this they decided to develop a shorter boat themselves. It resulted in the 505. “Does the FD have such bad manoeuvrability?” Of course a boat of six meters is less manoeuvrable than one of five. And the 505 was especially designed for quick-tacks. In fact, the Flying Junior of four meters can tack even quicker. But the FD has very long-stretched water lines. “Because the speed is largely dependent on the length of the water line?” Yes, we were thinking about a remark from England:“When you go to a certain length, make the boat as fast as possible, because trials are won by speed!” That’s why we made the front-inclination short and the stern straight and low; all to make the water line as short as possible. “Didn’t this affect the FD’s seaworthiness?” Oh no, she proved herself to be quite seaworthy. Dipping into waves is prevented by the broadening shape of the frame. “Wouldn’t a bigger freeboard make sailing on the open water easier?” That’s no problem at all; we have the self bailers and the double bottom, so the water that comes in will run out just as easily. To allow for dry sailing the board would have to be a lot higher. This would make her both heavier and a bigger object for the wind; in short, slower. “So, in stead of keeping the water outside your train of thought was: make the water disappear on instance. Upon which one could ask himself:Aren’t those big holes in the transom an open goal for big waves?” When waves are big enough to reach her stern, she will necessarily be gliding on them and won’t
6
be open to water from that side. “But what if you’re lying still for a moment or the wind drops on sea while the waves are still rolling?” Well, yes, some water could come into the boat then. But this is no problem, because the water will stay above the double bottom and run out again in no time. “As a ship builder it is naturally a little offending to me, a ship into which water can run in and out of at any moment, but from a speed point of view I do see the huge practical value.” Oh, but the ship isn’t unpleasant for normal sailing at all. “If you are wearing boots, I suppose?” The upper part of your body receives as much water as the lower part. Just yesterday I sailed a double bottom boat; really, you can sit in it with a light wind without getting wet. Only when the water is bumpy under a light wind a small wave will enter now and then.At such an occasion, some people put a small panel over the transom so they don’t wet their feet every time. “And when did the FD show herself to be no Junior on the sea?” That was in 1953, when the French and English organised a trial at La Baule. It was there that Wim van Duyl and Jaap Helder proved that the FD is among the fastest ships, even when sailing the sea. When in that same year the “lakes” restriction was lifted, we really became an international class. In 1957 the I.Y.R.U. decided to appoint the FD as one of the classes for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. It was the first time a Dutch design ever got so far. It gave the spreading of the FD a big boost, because all nations who wanted to participate in the Olympic Games had to train a specials corps of FD-sailors out of which they could choose their Olympic teams. International spreading rapidly followed this event. “And then the class organisation was formed?” No, that was formed right away, because I had been experienced in this from my Tornado days. It was a one-man-organisation at first, but we immediately started to publish FD-bulletins, bearing in mind the Star and Snipe classes. This way of organising a class was new in Europe at that time, so I had a head start on the others. Nowadays every class has its own organisation. “How many FD’s are around at this moment?” About three thousand, but I don’t know the exact number. However, far more important than the number of boats is the number of nations that are participating. Which, at this time, is thirtyeight. “Even though it’s a boat meant for very good sailors?” Yes, for the best racing teams actually. A lot of champions from other classes tend to change to the FD after a while. They don’t realise, however, that in the FD they are surrounded by champions and their results will usually be lower than in their former classes. “Do many people leave the FD to venture on seasailing?” No, but some people do both. However, luring people into different national teams is a very attractive business. FD-sailors really have formed a separate clan, including a lot of older guys over
forty. “And those guys are still in such good shape to keep this up?” For being a helmsman in the FD you don’t have to be extremely athletic, you can easily do that until you’re sixty. The crew, however, has a heavier job. He really should be in excellent shape. “How much time should you spend on training, practise races and so forth?” If you want to be a more-than-average racer the weekends should do. But if you really want to reach the top, you have to put in more effort. “But if I understand you correctly the crew has to be in constant training in order to be in proper shape by summer?” Most important is general fitness and for a helmsman also mental fitness. You should be free to focus on sailing without feeling burdened by all sorts of business problems. People attending a difficult business meeting on Friday night can’t be fit at the starting line Saturday morning. The difference is easy to tell. “Who are the best FD-sailors here in Holland?” We have a leading group, regrettably far ahead of the others, consisting of Ben Verhagen, Ulrich Jager and Jan Schoonevelt. “Do you think the FD will be an Olympic class for a long time?” The I.Y.R.U. is known for letting classes participate at least three times; or the whole world has to constantly change types. This isn’t a definitive rule however. “How many wharves are constructing FD’s in Holland at this moment?” Three are building them regularly; one working with plastic, two with wood. “Are the winning boats generally constructed by polyester or ply-wood?” You can’t tell that easily. Most sailors tend to say ply-wood is faster. But only recently a lot of championships have been won by polyester boats. “Maybe ply-wood is a little stiffer than polyester?” In popular theory, yes. But that doesn’t answer the question whether a stiff boat is faster than a weaker boat of course. We like to make the FD as stiff as possible, because the big length and light construction make her weak enough as it is. But we don’t really know for sure. In a light breeze polyester is probably better or at least comparable; in a strong breeze the others go faster. “What are your thoughts on the FD’s future?” Every year sees more boats entering competition that the former. Thus more FD’s are flying around the world, forming strong wakes in the waters of all the continents.

European championship 2006 in Austria, Lake Neusiedl The EURO 2006 is to be described completely and briefly in a few words: – light wind , except in the last race – heat each day – warm water in the lake (like a bath) – tropical temperatures each evening in the club restaurant (free sauna) – millions of mosquitos each evening between 21.00 and 23.00 o’clock But that was not everything. The control measurement was accomplished professionally as usual by Peter, John and the other one. However, the measurement tent was a first test for the heat compatability of all participants. On the first five days there was a very light wind from different directions and therefore we had until Friday only four races sailed. These races requi-
red everything from the sailors. Due to the windshifts and calm holes it was very heavy to sail (among other things with spinnaker cources directly at the reed edge etc.). Thus, one did not arrive where he wanted. Despite partially adverse conditions the race committee succeeded in accomplishing relatively fair races. Only in the last hard contested race on Saturday were the medal winners determined. The acting World champions also became the well-deserved European champions, congratulations again Szabolcs and Andras! I also think over 60 participants from 14 nations is a good result for the FD class. And the weather must be taken like it is. It could also have been continuous rain each day and no wind the whole week. I hope I will see all of you again, at the latest in July in Mar Menor, Spain.

ACT Championships Canberra, ACT, November 25-26 The ACT championships were held in conjunction with the ACT dinghy championships on Lake Burley Griffin. There was 2 days of tough racing in generally good winds with myriads of boats on quite small courses. The winners were Ian Ruff and Daryl Roos sailing AUS 371 the new FD built by Stuart Shimeld from the Hazelgrove mould. They showed good
speed and crew work and are expected to improve further. The racing was close with all of the 5 boats racing being in the lead on multiple occasions. There was an enjoyable dinner at the Yacht Club on Saturday night and it is planned that this will be a regular event on the FD calendar

NSW Championships Sydney Harbour The NSW championships were scheduled for 9-10 December at the Sydney Flying Squadron. Unfortunately the north-east seabreeze blew so hard on the 2nd day that races 3 & 4 had to be abandoned for safety reasons and the championship will be completed later in the season. However, we welcomed to the fleet new members AUS 327 John Maguire and Noel Whitaker and AUS 320 Matthew Mitchell and Michael Nolan. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to them later in the season.
Michael Chapman is tuning a new carbon mast from Alex Vallings at C.Tech in New Zealand with bend characteristics based on the Superspar MS and fitted out immaculately by Michael himself. On the social side Chris Haskard from Murray’s Craft Brewing Company provided free beer for the weekend introducing a new boutique beer Nirvana Pale Ale. This is an excellent drop and is fully recommended by the experienced drinkers at the regatta.

HARKEN Sponsorship letter HARKEN Sailing Wear recently signed an important sponsorship agreement to become Official Supplier of the International Flying Dutchman Class Organization. As of the autumn-winter collection in 2005-2006 HARKEN Sailingwear will offer several models inspired by the FD’s history and emotion. Together with a lot of enthusiastic sailors, who granted the worldwide success of the FD Class, we ‘ll reach the American, Australian and New Zealand coasts, as well as the European Lakes, the Mediterranean and the Northern European nations. Harken will be inspired by the most remarka-
ble feature of the FD Class: competing in the race for high tech and innovative solutions. For the same reason IFDCO chose Harken Sailing Wear as sponsor to supply sportswear for the FD teams. Both parties are aware that research and innovation are invaluable in the sport of dinghy racing. Having our glances always aimed towards the future, together we’ll begin this experience.

Obituary – John Truett John Truett, who was involved with the FD class for almost 40 years died at the end of December 2005, just a year after his wife Ann, previously F D General Secretary, was tragically killed in a road accident. John started sailing FD’s in the early 1960’s when the class profile in the UK was raised after Keith Musto and Tony Morgan won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. John’s FD, K52, Hucklebuck, was crewed at Whitstable in 1965 by schoolboy Ed Leask. By 1969, with “big Ed ” on the wire, John had got to grips with the boat and won the FD week in Naples with a day in hand. In 1970 John and Ed represented the UK in the Adelaide Worlds and finished 2nd to Rodney Pattisson and Iain McDonald-Smith. John and Ed had the satisfaction of winning the Mexican Silver Sombrero for the best result without discard and winning race 3 in 40 knots. John was an innovator in terms of FD layout, gear and tuning and also wrote articles for Yachting World, Trapeze and the IFDCO Bulletin. In 1972 everything was focussed on the Olympic Trials but in the Easter Hyeres regatta, John’s beautifully engineered boat was wrecked by a French “rescue” landing craft after a Mistral came through. That ended John’s serious FD campaigning, although he continued to sail FD ‘s in a more relaxed way with a string of top twelve placings in FD Worlds, Weeks and Kiel through to 1982. Not only was John an ace FD sailor, he also supported the FD Class both internationally and within the UK. He became European Commodore in 1971 and served on the Championship Committee from 1983, becoming VP Championships. He was meticulous in checking and improving the “Notice of Race” and “Sailing Instructions”. Stephen Parry, the current VP Championships assesses John’s contribution: “I will always remember him as someone very knowledgeable of the rules and of the traditions of the FD Class and will be eternally grateful for the legacy he has left us in how to organise and run a Championship”
John was a member of the British Section Committee and heavily involved in organising the 1974 Weymouth Worlds and proved an invaluable link with the Class hierarchy. Later he became an ISA judge, dropping out of this role in 1997. Keith Musto, Rodney Pattisson and Ed Leask were among an number of his sailing friends who attended his funeral at Wadhurst, Kent in January. Written by British Section friends
Obituary – Danila Benedettini Danila Benedettini, who was FD Italian Class Secretary since 1996 to 2004, died very young two months ago. Unfortunately, due to a serious illness, she had stopped sailing in 2005. The last time she sailed in the Flying Dutchman war during the " FD International Easter Criterium" in Varazze in 2005, where she won with her brother Marco. She crewed the FD with her brother Marco since 1993 and they sailed at all the National races with excellent results and attended to the FD European Championship in Murcia, in 1997. Danila was an enthusiast FD sailor and managed the FD Italian Class Secretary with professional kindness and she made herself popular with everybody. She lived in Genova and was a business consultant by profession. Since I became Commodore and IFDCO President I had the chance to appreciate Danila for character, engagement and availability to promote and support the Class life and activities. Dear Damila, we'll never forget your smile, passion and enthusiasm for the Flying Dutchman. We are very sad and will miss you very much!! IFDCO sends its condolences to Marco and Danilas family. Extract of the Minutes of the Annual General Committee Meeting 2006 The meeting was held in Neusiedl Austria on Thursday 27 July and completed after the EC Prizegiving on Saturday 29 July In attendance were the General Committee with apologies from Lin Robson, m Cook, Fulvio Colletti, Ian McCrossin and Richard Phillips. Finances. The Hon Treasurer explained that the hand over from his predecessor was taking a significant time as the bank required a great deal of documentation. Work is progressing with Adriaan Schmal to complete the previous accounts. The Hon Treasurer is also in contact with the Class Auditor. He has established that the class has a healthy bank balance, and he believes we have enough funds to make appropriate investments for the class like new equipment and promotional material. The Hon Treasurer will issue a budget as soon as possible and agreed to encourage Adriaan Schmal to complete the outstanding accounts. Technical & Measurement: Peter Hinrichsen(PH) explained those issues which had been highlighted during the measurement at Neusiedl. Personnel Floatation Devices(PFD). There was some confusion over the requirement for 50 Newton minimum buoyancy in the PFD, especially where the PFD was in a small or medium size, for which at first view the labels could be taken to imply 50 Newton buoyancy but on closer examination the smaller sizes did not meet this specification. Some smaller sailors had found it difficult to purchase 50 Newton PFDs which fit them. PH will write to ISAF to see if they have an alternative wording for this rule. Bands: The bands on Masts and Booms were not all in contrasting colours, for example dark blue on black carbon masts, and were not always painted as required by the class rules. The class rules are to be changed to remove the need for a scribed mark on the mast and boom and define that on a carbon mast and booms, bands shall be white and remain visible. Carbon Mast weight: The evidence from measurement showed that most carbon masts were in the range of 10.0 to 10.5 Kg. with the lowest weight being 9.4Kg. The Selden Masts were about 10.5Kg and the Avant Gard 10.0Kg. Concern was expressed that in order to reduce weight further a move to very high modulus carbon would be taken which would significantly increase costs. It was proposed that we should change the rule to set the minimum mast weight as 9.5 kg (from the present 8.5 kg) for 2008. There had been some issues with Rudders in profile and cross section. Amount of measurement: There was discussion about the amount of checks we do at regattas. It was pointed out that this question has been raised at a number of competitors hearings and the majority wanted to continue with the amount of measurement being done. It was suggested that we should change the checks we do at each event. It was pointed out that this is already the case, for example at the 2006 WC rudder and centreboard depth was measured, as this had not been done for some time. The measurers will review how measurement can be streamlined. The lack of the digital readout on the class scale had been a problem at Neuseidl as some competitors arrived expecting their boat to be weighted, the corrector weights adjusted and their certificate endorsed. This problem was exacerbated by the fact that at Balaton measurement had been done in pouring rain, so certificates could not be altered. In future any competitor who wishes a change in his certificate correctors must notify the Chief Measurer. The rule however is that "each boat shall carry the corrector weight as shown on the measurement certificate". . It was pointed out that measurement is only a check, although the Chief Measurer and his team will try to be helpful but only if time permits. There was a suggestion that only a percentage of boats be checked, as a way of reducing the time and effort taken over measurement. It was pointed out that this would be very prejudicial to those chosen, while others go sailing, and not achieve the object of assuring all competitors that the competition is fair. PH agreed to look to see if some form of compromise over time and effort, without reducing standards, can be found. Measurement Budget. It was agreed that measurement at the WC and EC are a requirement for our International status and that standards have to be maintained. There is a cost

associated with this and the Chief Measurer is allocated a budget of 1500 euros to defray expences of the measurement team. Championships. The following are planned or suggested. 2007 WC Mar Menor Spain July 2008 WC Napier NewZealand Dec/January2009 2009 WC Medemblik, Holland June. We would wait for the proposal from Croatia before making a decision on EC 2008. Since the meeting this has been agreed. Vintage Yachting Games. A proposal has been received inviting the FD to join the VYG initiative. There was a consensus that this has the potential for good publicity for the class, but there were concerns about the costs, as it is unclear that the VYG and its events are completely self funding. It was agreed that Alberto Barenghi(AB) would write to the organizers to ask specifically for details of the finances and a copy of the budgeted costs. Publicity & Promotion. AB explained that the Harken contract runs to May 2008 and it is then likely that Harken will take a different approach. We can have 36,000 Euros worth of clothing over three years. ((3*15,000) – 20%Vat). So far we have sold only 2320 Euros and already spent more than that for containers to St Petersburg. The current proposal is that each National Secretary is to be given some sample clothing and together with the information on the website asked to collect orders which would be sent together to AB who would send the clothing to the Nat Sec for distribution. Each National organisation will be able to retain 10% of the sale value for their funds. Website. Tobias Frank(TF) stated that he thought that there was a need to change the image of the International FD website. The current layout had been in place for some years and it needed changing. The first page would not seize the attention of a potential new sailor to the class. The website contains a lot of good information which needs to be retained. The first one or two levels of pages need a new image.AB is to look at the costs of developing a new front page. Other Promotion. TF suggested that the class should have 2 or 3 promotional photographs, without copyright for the class to use. AB agreed to discuss this with the photographer who took the photographs in Dervio. AB stated that he had a small sample of a draft promotional DVD which he would show the committee after the meeting to obtain their reaction and comments. Presidents Report. There were some comments on the sale of FD/Harken clothing at this event. In a short time before the prize giving 2500 Euros had been sold. It was suggested that we should a) have a poster. b) have some samples hanging up at measurement. c) sell items for 1 hour each day after sailing.AB agreed to organise this at future events. Bulletin. The Bulletin is regarded as a major instrument of promotion and advertising. There is a need to have one or more new editors. This has now been successful. There is a great need for a variety of articles submitted by class members to provide an interesting publication. Boat Registration and Class Records. Zsofia Csanda is to take over the roles of Boat Registrar, Class Records and selling of Sail Buttons. ISAF Annual Conference. Alberto Barenghi, Stephen Parry and Peter Hinrichsen will attend the ISAF Annual Conference. Appointments. Reappointed: VP Technical Peter Hinrichsen Commodore NW Europe Enno Kramer Appointed Chief Measurers John Best and Paul Hemker. 2007 AGCM: The 2007 AGCM will be held in Mar Menor, the day after the World Championship on Sunday 22 July 2007.
