Maxwell Lord, the “Black King” of the government agency known as Checkmate, had been secretly gathering sensitive information on the world’s super-heroes with the help of Brother Eye — a machine originally built by BATMAN, but now taken over by Lord for sinister purposes. Using his mental powers, Lord was able to take control of the mind of the world’s most powerful hero, SUPERMAN, and used the Man of Steel to beat up Batman and attack WONDER WOMAN. The Amazing Amazon eventually bound Lord in her “lasso of truth”, forcing him to tell her how to stop the rampaging Superman from potentially causing countless deaths and massive destruction. Lord replied with the only solution available: “Kill me”. Seeing no other choice, Wonder Woman snapped Lord’s beck, freeing Superman. But neither the Man of Steel nor the Dark Knight could condone Wonder Woman’s actions — believing that there could have been another way to stop Lord. Soon after, a CRISIS of infinite proportions was rocking the DC Universe to its core, and the Teen Titan known as Superboy sacrificed his life in order to save Earth. Meanwhile, another Superboy from an alternate dimension (Earth-Prime) attempted to change this Earth into a simpler, less-violent world — but, in doing so, became more violent himself. Superman and other heroes stopped the rampaging Superboy-Prime by flying him through Krypton’s red sun, Rao. Superboy-Prime was topped, but as a result Superman lost all of his powers. The hero ultimately retired his cape, choosing to focus on his life as reporter Clark Kent and husband to Lois Lane. Batman, realizing he had become too paranoid in his war on crime, decided to leave Gotham for a year and retrace his steps toward becoming Batman — taking Tim Drake (Robin) and Dick Grayson (Nightwing) along with him. Wonder Woman also took a year off from her duties to do some soul-searching of her own. The Crisis was over, and through all the chaos a “New Earth” was born — a world without its three greatest champions: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. But it was not a world without heroes...
