Potentate’s Message

Nobles and ladies, this year is really flying by! First Lady Gail and I would like to thank you for helping make 2017 a great year for Sahib Shrine so far. We have stated many times that our volunteers make Sahib great. Keep up the great work! Imperial Sir Chris Smith visited the largest weekly Men’s Luncheon of all Shrinedom. He and his Imperial First Lady Ethel enjoyed themselves and the nobles were at their best. Good job to all that helped make this day a success. Congratulations to the new Oriental Guide Marty Jordan and Lady Jennifer, Treasurer Wayne Thomas and Lady Margie - welcome to the Divan of Sahib Shrine! They were immediately sent off to Oriental Guide and Treasurer Seminar School in Tampa. Good luck. I would like to thank the Corvette Unit for donating $10,000 to Sahib Shrine. Noble Joe Humphreys presented the check to us. On March 4th, the Ladies Fashion Show was held for First Lady Gail’s Box Office project. Thank you, former First Lady Deanie Jacobi, for making arrangements with Dress Barn and the models. Over $2,000 was raised. More information and pictures from the show are in this edition of “The Reporter.” The nobles and ladies had fun at Sahib Shrine Tampa Bay Downs Day and we should thank Emeritus William “Bill” Batten who has organized this event for the last ten years. He will be stepping down, so we will need someone to step up and take his place. Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance turned into a very nice Hawaiian event with a few surprises. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance was a great success especially with the Irish Dancers who have performed for us the past four years. We would like to thank Noble Charles Hamilton for organizing the workers at the Sarasota County Fair this year and, thank all of you nobles and ladies who helped work the fair. That is always a tough job to do. Manatee Shrine Club has taken over the concession stand at the Pittsburg Pirates field in Bradenton and needs workers. You can work and make money for your unit or club. Get in touch with Chief Aide Jim Smith. The Divan attended two Potentate Balls at Bahia and Azan Shriners. We were also in the Arcadia Rodeo Parade. Sahib Shrine’s 25th Anniversary Golf Tournament is April 8th at Bobby Jones Golf Course. Winners will be announced in the May “Reporter.” Units and clubs are getting their hole sponsors in and we thank you. Remember to support your Shrine and keep a child in your heart! Fraternally Yours, William “Bill” Balkwill Sahib Potentate 2017 We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

pring is here and many of the northern visitors are returning home and spring break will soon be upon us. The native Sarasotans are starting yard cleanups and soon those lazy days will be here with those hot summer temperatures. Remember the Sahib Lounge is here to serve you during these days, so stop in and enjoy your lounge and restaurant. The Potentate and Divan are working on administrative changes to better track activities and make it easier to report. Many hours of work and research are being done to better inform and give information to the Divan so they can better serve the nobility. There continues to be many activities at Sahib and the “FireBall Express” continues to roll. Remember to support the Shrine - you must get involved; one way is choosing one activity during the month to attend and enjoy yourself. The 2017

Imperial Session is scheduled at Daytona Beach. The Potentate wishes as many nobles that can travel, to meet him for a great time and fellowship, your lady is invited also. You can get information from Housing Chairman Paul “Greek” Pante or Ill. Sir Balkwill, rooms are limited so hurry. New things were bought for the kitchen and equipment was replaced that was broken or not functioning. This was a priority and a continuous project. As Sahib membership declines rentals and support from the community is a necessity. Sahib’s social activity and community support will keep our Shrine functioning for generations in Sarasota. Remember to support your Sahib lounge and restaurant at least once this month and make it a practice. See you around Sahib and remember the child within. 

hat does the Divan do? We help manage Sahib Shriners. The responsibility outline is: The Assistant Rabban shall act as Potentate of Sahib in the absence of both the Potentate and Chief Rabban. He shall perform supervision over those persons, committees and activities as shown in the Sahib organization chart. He shall plan and execute those activities so noted in the Sahib organization chart. The Assistant Rabban may make whatever housing arrangements are

necessary for Imperial or all Florida Conventions to be held during his year. He shall perform whatever other duties are assigned to him by the Potentate. It does not seem like much, however, many other duties are assigned. You elect us and we work for you. We need your help and your support so that together we can help children! If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact me and/or any member of the Divan. Peace be with you. 

hanks to all 56 members and ladies who attended our February 3rd meeting. That’s two more than last month. We will continue to grow as you all spread the word that the Manatee Shrine Club has an active program with informative speakers and educational and delightful socials. Again, we had a busy meeting this month. Our membership continues to grow as we admitted Noble Phil Billard who immediately volunteered himself and his Lady Mary to participate in our baseball park work program. We can use more members like Noble Phil to join our club or for our current members to reactivate their participation. Our meeting was graced with the presence of Illustrious Sir Bill Balkwill who installed the Manatee Shrine Club officers who were unable to attend the January installation at Sahib Shriners. The word from the Baseball Park Committee, consisting of Ron LeVene, Jim Smith and Connie Jacobi, is that we have a contract for work at the ball park. All interested MSC members who wish to work at the park need to fill out a work form

obtained from Jim Smith and attend a training program to be certified to serve food and beverage. Contact Jim Smith for the form and a schedule for certification training. Our guest speaker was Will Markham, Command Chief Master Sergeant (Retired), Air Force Special Operations Command and currently the Director of Operations of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (www.specialops. org). The foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1980 after the failed Iran hostage rescue mission in which 8 warriors lost their lives in a desert crash of their helicopter. The foundation’s mission is to help families rebuild their lives and more directly to provide educational funds for the children. Currently the foundation supports over 1,100 children of fallen special operations warriors with college scholarships. Recently the Manatee Shrine Club has been asked to work food concessions at the LECOM Park baseball field. Members will be handling food . . .continued on page 38 

o April fool’s joke this year from the Motor Corps. We’re not going to try and fool you into believing the Potentate bought a Harley and plans to join us. But, no fake news either when we tell you that two members of the Elected Divan are members of the Motor Corps. That would be the Chief Rabban and the Assistant Rabban. Glad to have them both as members. Any other Divan members want to join us? First, we can report a successful Spaghetti Dinner back in February. Looks liked we served 360 fellow Shriners, friends and family. Thanks to all who attended or bought tickets. As usual, a lot of people deserve kudos for making this February’s dinner a success. First, to our ladies

who helped serve and sell tickets, we say thanks. Once again, thanks to Past Potentate Lou Ortt 33° who collected tickets. The Rainbow Girls who have helped us for so many years were there once again. Also, we thank the DeMolay members who helped. Winner of the 50/50 was one of our own members, Dave Mashia (OD). His half of the pot was $151 of which he donated $100 back to the Motor Corps Shrine Club. Final numbers are not in yet, but we count this Spaghetti Dinner as another successful event. If you missed this dinner, we’ll be back in November with our second one of the year. Second, we were happy to escort Imperial . . .continued on page 38 

y not attending our last mixer at the Olive Garden I cannot first-hand report on the proceedings, but if past occasions are any example, it had to be exceptional. Once again sadness has occurred in our club. The Black Camel has taken our member and Past Potentate Tom Millaway. North Port Shrine Club extends sincere sympathies to Lady Katherine and the Millaway family. On a lighter note, on Valentine’s Day, Noble Bill (Skipper) Shultz was honored by the San Pedro Assembly No. 3163 Knights of Columbus for his service in the USAAC flying a B17 over Europe during WWII. Each year the Assembly honors a veteran. Captain Shultz is our oldest member in the NPSC Veterans Roster. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals, seven Battle Stars and a Purple Heart. Congratulations “Skipper”. Overlooked in the last report were the nobles celebrating a February birthday. President David H. Wheatcroft, Nobles John G. Watson Jr. and Lowell McCarty. March saw Nobles Clinton Van Tassel, Clifford Bloodsworth, Mark Yates and

yours truly John H. Brophy adding another year. Happy days to all. Overlooked too many times for well-deserved accolades are those nobles who give their time to assist in our philanthropy, the Shriners Hospitals for Children. I refer in this instance to two of our dedicated members, Nobles Jim Macdonald and Jim Gates, drivers for the patients heading for the Tampa hospital. Thanks nobles. A correction to the March “Reporter” edition. The NPSC ad lists last year’s President Albert Sawdai for 2017, it is David (Wheatie) Wheatcroft. On to the silliness - (Bits and Pieces) - satire, after NYC officials removed an unflattering life-sized statue of a naked well known elected politician that activists stationed in Union Square Park. “NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks,” said a department spokesperson, “no matter how small.” (Quotable Notable) Who said: “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.” The usual comp breakfast for two for the correct answer. he Clown Unit would like to thank the membership for supporting our February Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance and our dual celebration of Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day. The ladies sure did a great job of dressing their Valentines and the Mardi Gras folks wore outfits for the season. Of course, our clown ladies did an outstanding job with the decorations. See you all next year. The Clowns have answered the calling for their participation at the monthly famous King Pins’ Pancake Breakfasts. Our Clown for February and March was Ian Grant. The Clowns would love to see more children coming with their parents. We could set up a special location for the children to visit with a Clown for some magic. Clown Al “Corny” Cobb has volunteered for this arrangement. How can we get the young people to visit our Pancake Breakfasts and talk with a Clown?

Have you noticed the Clown calliope playing music at the monthly Pancake Breakfast? We would hope that the Clown car playing the music, out by the street, would help to attract a few more visitors and we would hope that all the patrons are enjoying the sound of calliope music. The Clowns say thank you to everyone that drops in a buck or two into the “Red Sneaker” located by the jewelry counter in the Main Hall. This money goes directly to the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. My space has run out for this article, so I will plan to review the “Red Sneaker” fund and its history in next month’s “Reporter.” We hope that we saw you in Arcadia and will see you at the Palmetto Children’s Parade. If not, remember this - it is our Shrine children for whom we are working. 

he new generation wants to be involved in Masonry. The band had ladies requesting to sign up as members of the Oriental Band, even wanted to pay dues for the year to join. Unfortunately, ladies are not allowed to be Master Masons or Shriners. This would be a clandestine organization under Masonic order. There are organizations that are formed for ladies to get involved and help Shriners Hospitals for Children and have social activities. The Oriental Band hopes they can organize and start a band if interested in a ladies’ organization. On a different note, the band had a couple of gigs back in February, one at Sahib Shriners and

the other at a large mobile park on the far eastern edge of Bradenton. We performed well at both we think, at least we didn’t get any fruit or vegetables thrown at us. We are still talking about whether we should do the children’s parade in Palmetto and the Arcadia Rodeo Parade. We have done both parades many times, but each year we must determine if we have enough performers and if the available members want to carry them off. Would like to remind you that there will be a lot of activities this month; get your reservations in as early as you can; all of these events are worth your participation and consideration. Your Shrine needs you. Till next time stay well. 

Retention – Thanks to the nobles who have volunteered to mentor new nobles. Please continue to follow up with the new noble and their lady to become involved by attending Stated Meetings, Shrine functions and becoming a member of our clubs and/or units. Please remember to complete the Mentor follow up form upon making contacts. Our Mini Spring Ceremonial is fast approaching; consider volunteering to mentor new Shriners.

Restoration – Let’s continue our efforts to restore suspended and unpaid members of Sahib. Thanks to the nobles who are diligently making follow up calls. We need to stop the membership decline at Sahib. We must ask those nobles to maintain their membership and restore those suspended members who have not paid their 2016 – 2017 dues. Recruitment – Nobles it is not too early to be recruiting and signing up Blue Lodge members for our Mini Spring Ceremonial. Let’s continue to recruit Master Masons in your Masonic Lodges to become members of Sahib Shriners. Our Mini Spring Ceremonial is scheduled for the end of March, 2017. Thanks again from your 2017 Membership Chairman Gene Marinelli, Co-Chairmen Connie Jacobi, PP, Marty Jordan and Constantine Chekoski for your follow up to maintain and recruit new Sahib members. Please give the Membership Committee your full support to achieve our 2017 goal of more new members than losses. Get that candidate now! We must have new members to grow. Thousands of children depend on the Shrine to help mend their bodies. Let’s not let them down, let’s share with our friends the opportunity to join us in this world’s great philanthropy. 

ords help us communicate, describe, express, instruct, teach and learn. Often enough, words are symbols for great ideas, concepts and beliefs; they make us think and evaluate. It behooves us to be attentive to their meaning lest they lose their usefulness or foil our intent. The appropriate use of words is elementary; we need only call upon three of the seven liberal arts and sciences: grammar, rhetoric and logic. The proper use of grammar helps us describe conditions around us, what we see and experience; it helps us clearly communicate. Rhetoric is the endeavor to persuade and convince, to lead. Logic is a check on grammar and rhetoric – what we say must make rational sense; utterances must be more than mere sounds and opinions. Freemasonry challenges us with words and language that are beyond the elementary, however. We use words that symbolize great ideas and concepts. Consider the words Justice (see May 2014 “Reporter” edition) or Virtue (see November 2014 and February 2016 “Reporter” editions). Such words defy simple explanations or definitions found in a dictionary. Their meaning derives, in large part, by how we interpret and apply them. A word Freemason’s use, morality, is such an example. We hear it first spoken in the first section of the Master Mason Degree. It is a tenet within the extended points of the compasses. But does Freemasonry explain, describe or precisely define it? Nope. Each Mason is probably confident we know what morality is, what a moral action is (as distinguished from an immoral one.) Likely a great deal of such confidence is based on some sense of revelation or religious upbringing. Our fraternity welcomes men of every monotheistic faith; so, our ritual steers clear, rightly, from providing any explanatory checklists of what morality is or is not. It is left to our inquiry. The ancients are of limited help with such inquiry. There is no Latin or Greek word that satisfactorily translates into the English word “moral.” In the period 1630 to about 1850, “moral” became the name for a “particular sphere in which

rules of conduct, which are neither theological nor legal nor aesthetic, (were) allowed a cultural space of their own.” Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) argued that morality is that state where principles have authority over our attitudes, preferences and feelings. How we feel at any given moment is irrelevant to the question of how we should live and act. Morality, Kierkegaard asserted, is determined by reason. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) suggested that morality had no basis in our religious beliefs. An act was “moral” only if we could categorically and unconditionally will it to be a bona fide rule and guide to everyone’s conduct at all times and places, independent of individual circumstances, desires and conditions. David Hume (1711-1776) argues persuasively (to many) that morality is rightly understood in terms of passions and desires in human life; that morality is not governed by reason. Is morality determined by revelation, reason, will or desire; or a bit of each? Great thinkers have debated and spilled much ink over the word. Freemasonry, whether in the Blue Lodge or the Scottish Rite, keeps the inquiry alive, lest we carelessly use the word “morality” without considering what it might mean. The inquiry continues at the next Scottish Rite on April 22 and April 29. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Our April 10th meeting will feature our annual ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal, honoring Brethren who have passed during the past year. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. Some ideas in this essay are plagiarized from Alasdair MacIntyre’s (1929) book “After Virtue.” MacIntyre would, no doubt, have indigestion upon reading it. MacIntyre spoke favorably of Mozart, Freemasonry, tradition and Aristotelian ethics. 

For several years, Sahib Shriners had what was referred to as an “Angel Fund’ to assist nobles who were unable to pay their dues because of health, financial or age related issues. The “Angel Fund” remitted the necessary funds to keep them as current members, and to avoid suspension due to non-payment of Shrine dues. This fund has been fully exhausted and there is no place in our budget to replenish the fund. This is where you can lend a helping hand to a fellow Shrine Mason,

if he is in good standing within his Blue Lodge. For your contribution of $35, you can keep one delinquent member from being removed from our membership rolls for another year pending his status as a Master Mason. You can personally select a member from the current delinquent list, or we will do it for you. Please remember these nobles in need of a helping hand. Stop by the office and be responsible for keeping a fellow Shriner on the active list. 

Because of this opportunity to work the ball park, the baseball social announced in “The Reporter” and was originally scheduled for April 8th has been cancelled. A special recognition banquet for all the baseball workers will be held at the end of the preseason schedule to say thanks to all members that participated in the ball park volunteer program. Our scheduled speaker at the March 3rd meeting was to be Don Hermey from the Manatee Emergency Management Department, but he had a late conflict and cannot make the meeting. I presented a travel log of my recent visit to the Panama Canal. I presented a PowerPoint presentation showing photos of the operations of the old and new canals. The April meeting is scheduled for the first Friday of the month, April 7th. The meal is a house salad, rolls, chicken fried steak with country gravy, mashed potatoes and chef ’s vegetables. The salad as an entrée option is a spring salad with grilled pineapple and chicken. Dessert is vanilla ice cream with strawberry topping. Please make your meal reservations with Marty Jordan, 1st V.P., at shrinerMJJ@aol.com or (941) 981-2687. Cut-off date is always the Friday before the meeting. Sir Chris Smith and First Lady Ethel during their visit to the Sahib Shriners Luncheon on Thursday, March 9th. A special thanks to our members who could break away from their work responsibilities for this escort duty. Unfortunately, we were not able to participate in this year’s Arcadia Rodeo Parade held on Saturday, March 11th. Conflicts with other motorcycle events and activities left us too few riders for a meaningful participation. The annual Sam Swope Memorial Charity Ride was held on Sunday, March 12. This year’s ride was from Daytona Beach to Sanford. Several our members rode over on Saturday and a financial contribution was made. Net proceeds from the “ride” benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. Several of our members along with members of the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association made the Annual Pilgrimage to the Masonic Home in Saint Petersburg on the weekend of March 18-20. Unfortunately, there were a few conflicts that same weekend, so Motor Corps participation was limited. The residents of the Masonic Home sure do enjoy seeing all the motorcycles. Finally, on March 25, several members from our Motor Corps rode to Tampa to practice obstacle course motorcycling with the Egypt Shrine Motor Corps. A group from our club hopes to participate in future motor corps competitions. We have eleven Motor Corps members and their ladies with birthdays in April. Shriners Hospitals for Children Collection Boxes What are they? A plastic cube with a slot in the top. What are the boxes for? To help collect donations, money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from the Hospital Days Fund Drive. Where are the boxes to be? In any store or business, preferably near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy for them to put their change in the box. When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donate small amounts of cash at any time. As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours? Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449 if you can arrange a placement.

Pull Tabs for Shriners Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of January 31, 2017, they have collected 113,835 lbs., for a total of $61,166.16 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
