IRD’s mission is to reduce the suffering of the world’s most vulnerable groups and provide the tools and resources needed to increase their self-sufficiency. Since 1998, IRD has provided more than $3 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to communities worldwide. To the people we serve, that assistance means more hospitals and medicines to heal, schools to educate, roads to give access to markets, homes to provide safe havens, training to foster skills, and steady jobs to ensure families’ wellbeing. IRD partners with a wide range of organizations—including US and other government agencies, bilateral and international donors, faith-based and nongovernmental organizations, foundations, and the private sector—to implement targeted, cost-effective relief and development programs. We specialize in working in challenging environments, including conflict zones and areas suffering the consequences of natural disaster. IRD approaches each situation with careful assessments that we use to design short- and long-term interventions. For example, rather than just delivering food and clean water to residents of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, IRD tackled the problem of upgrading community-wide food, water, and sanita¬tion systems. And rather than repairing a few roads in Afghanistan, IRD is helping build durable, reliable transportation and agricultural sectors intended to revitalize communities’ and the national economy. IRD’s targeted, cost-effective programs provide assistance to the world’s most vulnerable people in seven key service areas: 1. Acquisitions & Logistics 2. Community Stabilization 3. Democracy, Governance & Community Development 4. Health 5. Infrastructure 6. Relief & Humanitarian Assistance 7. Sustainable Food & Agriculture Systems HOW WE WORK Our work is strategic, results-oriented, and locally driven. IRD finds that the biggest challenges can be the best opportunities for success. In most cases, local staff and local communities implement our work. Often, over 90 percent of our staff is locally hired, while our Washington DC-based headquarters provides guidance, program development experience, technical support, financial oversight, and communications assistance to our local teams. IRD is supported by many donors, including USAID, the departments of State and Defense, the United Nations, and the World Bank. We receive additional support from foundations, faith-based and other nongov¬ernmental organizations, advocacy groups, and corporations. IRD also benefits from the spontaneous desire of people across the world who volunteer to support our work with their time, ideas, and funding. IRD is committed to upholding the highest standards of business ethics and conduct and to earning and protecting our donors’ and the public’s trust through exemplary work and careful accounting for funds. To fulfill this obligation and uphold these standards, we created a standalone Office of Compliance, whose chief reports directly to the President and CEO. Working in parallel with IRD’s Department of Program Operations, Compliance supports IRD’s goal of achieving programmatic success.
