SPC Update

A Moment in SPC History - 2014

In 2014, the SPC was still an independently run, individual amateur tournament that Sahalee hosted in early July. Amateur golf was growing quickly but had not expanded to its current state where most international players were playing US college NCAA golf, and there were a few less tournaments on the summer elite amateur calendar. The SPC was drawing better fields than the North and South Amateur at Pinehurst (the same week), and international players were flocking to Sahalee to begin their North American summers. This “perfect storm” led to a great field that at the time, none of us had an idea how great it was. The tournament was won by Mark Anguiano – a player from Cal State Fullerton, who while not the highest ranked player in the field, beat an incredible field on his way to turning professional later that summer. As we look down the historic scoring, it turns out that 2014 was chalk-full of what would become the best golfers in the world. So many of us who hosted players that year were so lucky to have these players at our house for a week, and even luckier to see them play the High Heavenly Ground. Here is a selection from that year:

This year’s SPC could be no different. Of the participating schools, the makeup of players likely to be playing this year at Sahalee will be:

• 6 Players who competed in this year’s US Open at LACC

• 12 Players who are currently ranked top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking

• Teams attending the SPC have 22 of the top 100 ranked players in the NCAA Individual rankings from last year

• 10 of the 12 teams participating in the SPC this year finished the year ranked in the top 30

Mark your calendars for the SPC in early September it is going to be amazing! Thanks for reading and hope to see you all spectating or volunteering with the SPC

Sincerely,

Kevin White SPC Tournament Chair
