United Way’s Adopt-A-Classroom United Way’s Adopt-A-Classroom program connects business leaders in the community with elementary students in low-income schools. These generous volunteers donate their time to provide a helping hand and a listening ear to the kids who need it most.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library sends children a new book delivered to their mailbox each month.

Although this program benefits all children, the program is most beneficial to the 61 percent of lowincome children who do not have a book in their home. It’s about more than just reading, it fosters bonding between parent and child and helps children start kindergarten on target with their peers.

In her six years as First Lady, Mrs. Dalrymple devoted many hours and miles in advocating for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. She forged partnerships, found resources and created the opportunity for 92 percent of children in North Dakota to be eligible for the program. Thank you, Mrs. Dalrymple!

Like a lot of young women, Erin thought she was with the love of her life. When things escalated from name-calling to physical abuse, Erin’s father, out of fear, approached her about seeking refuge with the Abused Adult Resource Center (AARC) in Bismarck. There, thanks to the support of United Way, Erin, “got her life back.” Those are her words, not ours. She found so much more than a safe place to stay. She found a support system through a case worker, complete with guidance that helped her redirect her life and get her on the right path. Erin is currently employed by another United Way agency and absolutely loves her job. AARC even found her a car so she would have safe transportation to work.

Thanks to United Way supporters, Erin feels like for the first time, she has a future to be excited about.

Craig’s world was rocked when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and given five years to live. Progressive doctors hit it hard with aggressive treatments that attacked the cancer, but left Craig with so little energy that he found it hard to be an active participant in his own life. Craig’s wife convinced him to give the LIVESTRONG program at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA a try.

LIVESTRONG is a free 12 week program for cancer survivors that’s fully funded due to the generous investments of United Way donors. Each week, participants meet and learn what it means to live healthy. Within the first couple of weeks, Craig’s energy level was greatly improved and he developed a support system with the other participants. He went from not wanting to get out of bed in the morning to being able to work out regularly, ride his bike for miles and even went back to work full time. Recently, Craig’s doctors gave him the great news that he is cancerfree. Craig is now committed to a healthy lifestyle and is a regular visitor at the YMCA.

Summer Hunger Program

16,452 meals served to children and adults.

Over 7,000 people in Bismarck-Mandan deal with hunger issues. While exploring a long-term solution for a community soup kitchen, United Way developed a plan to address the immediate need of hunger in the community. United Way added financial and volunteer support to existing children’s summer meal programs to increase the number of sites and provide meals for adults as well. United Way coordinated volunteers to help serve food, supervise, and monitor road crossings. Through this partnership with Bismarck and Mandan Public Schools, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Great Plains Food Bank, the Summer Hunger Program provided 16,452 meals in low-income neighborhoods around the community.

United Way Backpack and Rural Backpack Programs When friends of United Way shared stories of children who were going hungry over the weekend, United Way declared the reality unacceptable and immediately implemented Bismarck-Mandan’s United Way Backpack Program. People stepped up, raised their hand, volunteered and donated as if to say that they would not allow children to go hungry in our community. Not on our watch.

Thanks to generous donors, businesses and volunteers, children are able to go home on Friday confident they know where their next meal is coming from.

Hunger isn’t just a city problem. This year, United Way partnered with volunteers in Beulah, Hazen, and Linton to bring the United Way Backpack Program to their communities, providing 8,424 meals to 59 students.

After having a particularly hard day, a local teacher wearily mumbled under her breath, “I’m so happy it’s Friday.” A little boy sitting a few steps away heard her and excitedly said that he, too, was happy it was Friday. Thinking that he had a birthday party to go to or was going somewhere fun out-of-town, the teacher asked him why he was so excited. The boy looked at her with excitement and said, “I LOVE Fridays because I get to take a backpack full of food home to my family.” The teacher told us about how she caught her breath and how tears formed in her eyes. How in one, joy-filled sentence, this boy changed her whole outlook on what it means to have a “bad day.” How joy is everywhere, including in a simple gift that ensures that your family will have food to eat over the weekend.

ANNUAL LUNCHEON & MEETING JAN. 28 We started 2016 off right by announcing that $2,601,888 million was raised to provide vital services and programs for our community.

STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE MAY 14 Letter carriers and United Way volunteers banded together to collect and distribute 55,300 pounds of food to 14 agencies, food pantries and the United Way Backpack Program.

COINS FOR A CAUSE SEPT. 26 - OCT. 6 Eighteen schools battled it out to see who would take top honors in this annual event that encourages students to bring in spare change to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Congratulations to Prairie Rose Elementary School for raising the most dollars per student at $4.49, Sunrise Elementary for raising the most overall at $1,420.60 and Bismarck High School for capturing the honor for the most raised by a high school at $846.83. The real winners? The 490 children who are now sponsored through the $12,272.68 raised.

LIVE UNITED DAY NOV. 18 Dozens of businesses wore Live United shirts to #LiveUnitedBisMan. The day was capped at Live United With the Bobcats, where the local hockey team put on a great show for United Way fans!

GIVING TUESDAY NOV. 29 Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving that falls the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Through a generous $10,000 match by Precision Underground, $27,315 was raised in 24 hours to support the work of United Way.

UNITED WAY GIVING TREE DECEMBER Hundreds of United Way donors stepped up to make sure kids had a present to open at Christmas time, collecting 1,672 gifts! Businesses, churches, Toys for Tots and individuals sponsored gifts. Women United helped to wrap and distribute the gifts to children in United Way’s Backpack Program and local families in need.

DAY OF CARING AUGUST 10 A record breaking 1,009 volunteers from the Bismarck/Mandan area descended on over 40 non-profits, schools and parks. The energy was high, the laughter was plenty and tons of work was accomplished. The day started with gusto at 7:30 a.m. at the Campaign Kick-off where United Way Board President Leslie Oliver announced the 2016 campaign goal of $2.6 million dollars. “United Way is a group that gets…things…done,” said Oliver during her kick-off speech.

After the kick-off, volunteers helped non-profits check all kinds of tasks off their to-do lists. Projects included tree work, cleaning shelters, sorting through donated clothing, scrubbing bleachers, serving meals to the needy, organizing a food pantry, building picnic benches and shelving, and putting up sheetrock.

UNITED WAY’S WOMEN UNITED We believe that when caring, committed women get together to create change, anything is possible.

Women United is a group of philanthropic leaders dedicated to making a lasting difference in the Bismarck-Mandan community. Through Women United, women volunteer, network and develop professionally, all while making a big impact.

Women United focuses on women and children.

They raise awareness and dollars for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and the United Way Backpack Program and provide hands-on support to struggling students through the Adopt-A-Classroom program.

Women United members lead by example. By giving to United Way at the leadership giving level of $500 or more annually, these extraordinary women come together to celebrate philanthropic leadership and what’s possible when we LIVE UNITED.

COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER DAY OF ACTION JUNE 21 Each year, United Way organizations across the country mobilize their volunteers to make a big impact on the longest day of the year. Locally, Women United organized the second annual Community Baby Shower to provide at-risk mothers with essential baby items to help ensure a healthy beginning for their newborns.

Women United members collected hundreds of items to create 112 baby baskets for at-risk mothers in our community.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS CAMPAIGN SEPTEMBER 19 – 22 United Way’s Women United had a record breaking year with the Little Black Dress Campaign, raising poverty awareness and $76,695.11 for United Way’s Education Initiative. In 2016, individuals participated in teams of six or as an individual.

Funds raised by the Little Black Dress Campaign ensures families are able to stay in their homes, makes sure kids are able to get to school and learn, as well as provides mentors and tutors for those students.

Outfits were also donated to the Seeds of Hope Career Closet at the end of the event.

The 209 participants brought awareness to some of our community’s biggest challenges, and more importantly, they did something about it.
