Letter from the Director Dear Friends, Those in need in our community are often invisible and forgotten. This was evident at the start of last winter, when the only emergency homeless shelter in Bismarck closed their doors. I vividly recall desperate people coming in from the cold with their fingertips black from frostbite.

Through the support of donors, volunteers, and honestly, through the grace of God, United Way opened a permanent homeless shelter for men, women, and children on March 1, 2018. This past year, United Way directly sheltered 762 individuals.

Over 70% of the clients we have served are from North Dakota. Their life and everything that they know is right here. We did this on top of our day-to-day work, like making sure kids don’t go hungry, or filling high-poverty elementary classrooms with caring volunteers, or investing in preventative programs through the power of Women United, or working closely with our partners to combat the root causes of poverty.

The complexities of hunger and homelessness are many - mental illness, trauma, abuse, addiction.

Criminal records and poor credit follow those released from the state penitentiary, limiting affordable housing options and employment opportunities. For many, jail is not a deterrent, but often a way of survival.

Homeless children are far more likely to experience health, developmental, and behavioral problems than their housed peers. They are more likely to have poor attendance, fall behind in school, and perform worse on academic measures. We can change that. But without consistent and quality service delivery, the cycle of poverty will not be broken. Sustainable funding is needed.

Functional and efficient systems need to be built. We’re up for the challenge.

In this last half of the year, 96 homeless individuals moved into permanent housing and 50 moved into transitional housing. Numbers and transparency are important and you’ll find a lot within this report. But at the end of the day, it’s about the people we’ve helped and the lives we’ve transformed.

United Way steps up to take on tough problems. It’s who we are and what we do, especially when lives are at stake. And we are only successful because of your support.

It’s about

SECOND CHANCES • On March 1, 2018, United Way started the only emergency homeless shelter in our community.

• Over 70% of United Way homeless clients served are from North Dakota.

• United Way’s Emergency Homeless Shelter provided 15,716 nights of shelter to 762 men, women, and children from October 2017 through December 2018.

• From July 2018 through December 2018, 96 United Way homeless clients moved into permanent housing.

• 399 students in Bismarck and Mandan Public Schools are homeless.

Homeless, abused, and addicted, a former client came to United Way last winter living on the streets, trying to escape a toxic relationship and environment. She faced many challenges while trying to get out of homelessness, but with the support of United Way she has been clean and sober for over a year! She has gained back her independence, moved into her own apartment, is working, and currently in school to get her GED. 7

• 1,271 students received a backpack of food over the weekends to avoid going hungry through the United Way Backpack Program.

• A total of 2,227,869 meals were provided to local individuals in need.

• 31,561 meals were provided in 10 parks throughout Bismarck–Mandan by 678 volunteers for the Summer Hunger Program.

• 1 in 5 children go hungry in Bismarck-Mandan.

I work six days a week from sun-up to sun-down, but at the end of each month I’m barely able to cover the cost of family expenses. As a painter, my job is very dependent on the weather. I try finding odd jobs, but there are months I simply did not have enough money to feed my two children and wife.

After finding access to our local food pantry, it made all the difference! It’s so difficult having to make the decision between paying bills and putting food on the table. I’m so thankful we no longer have to worry about if we will have enough money to eat. This assistance is helping now and providing a chance for my children to have a better future.

THEIR FUTURE • 329 students benefited from the Restorative Justice Program to resolve conflict and build life-changing relationships.

• 213,744 minutes of tutoring were provided at 11 different schools.

• 134 children, 93% of the kids in Head Start & Early Intervention started school developmentally on track in terms of literacy, social, emotional, and intellectual skills.

• 52,649 books were delivered to 4,168 Bismarck-Mandan preschoolers through United Way’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

A single mother of two is finally feeling relief. One son continually acts out at school resulting in multiple suspensions.

Through the work of Neighbors Network, many positive changes are being accomplished. In the past 7 months, he’s received psychological testing which resulted in a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Processing Disorder. He’s now eligible for an IEP to address his needs and allow for more success in school. Mom received assistance with arranging occupational therapy, mental health services, mentoring, case management, and is finally able to hold down a stable job. The stress level at home has drastically decreased, behaviors have improved, and school suspensions have stopped.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR WELLNESS • With your support, 71,273 meals were delivered to help 1,469 seniors stay in their homes.

• Thanks to 213 meal-delivering volunteers, seniors received a nutritious meal and a daily check-in.

• The YMCA Livestrong Program provided 67 cancer survivors with an increased quality of life.

• 3,912 seniors received important health maintenance to help them maintain a healthy independent life.

Mary, a new congregate meal participant, came for lunch but was not feeling well. Through the relationships [she] made, a friend recognized something was not right. She alerted the site manager and with Mary’s permission, her daughter was contacted and she was taken to the emergency room. After tests, they discovered she did indeed have a mini-stroke. Mary and her daughter are so grateful to the Burleigh County Senior Adults Program staff and her newfound friends for looking after her.

TURNING POVERTY INTO POSSIBILITIES Young and lost, a high school dropout entered the Youthworks transitional living program last winter and reached many accomplishments in just three months! She enrolled in GED courses, obtained part-time employment, and addressed her mental health needs with services. This fall, she completed her GED and was accepted into college. She moved on to campus, maintains a part-time job for additional expenses, and has the financial aid to stay in school.

• 795 individuals received Needy Family Memberships to help with financial assistance to the YMCA and provide a safe establishment for their children. • After unexpected loss of their home from natural disasters, 51 adults and 29 children received necessary emergency support from American Red Cross. • 53 struggling, low-income families (122 children and 66 parents) received life-changing case management and mentorship.

Day of

CARING On August 15, 2018 United Way had another record-breaking Day of Caring! Volunteers from Bismarck, Mandan, and Linton communities worked together to save thousands of dollars and time to be reinvested into life-changing programs.

Day of Caring is about connecting community-minded individuals and businesses to help nonprofits and neighbors in need. It’s about assisting several low-income individuals to ensure they are able to live independently. More than 100 local businesses pitched in to support the event through sponsorships, in-kind donations, providing lunches, and offering employees a paid volunteer day.

Some projects that were completed included shelter cleaning, landscaping, organizing a food pantry, painting and staining at several locations, carpet removal and replacement, organizing book-rooms for the upcoming school year, and so much more!

• 1,343 community volunteers.

• 10,744 hours invested.

• 76 local projects for individuals, non-profits, parks, and schools impacted.

• $349,508 in savings reinvested into life-changing community programs and organizations.
