LULAC Council – General Membership Meeting Minutes April 27, 2009, 6:15 PM Members present: Sonia Aguiar (VP of Communications), Doug García, Bunny Caro, Fernando Cascante, Mayra Granados, Barbara Ingberg, Maricel Quintana Baker, Vilma Seymour (President), Xiomara Vidal President Vilma Seymour called the meeting to order at 6:15 PM. She announced that Douglas Garcia will be replaced by Kristin Vementa. Treasurer’s Report: in the Treasurer’s absence, the President gave the Treasurer’s Report. She also announced that restricted funds in the amount of $4K will be used to contract a fund developer. The Council’s balance to date was reported as $1701.33. President Seymour also announced having received personal donations for the Council for a total of $1,080. Therefore, she is assigning $400 out of the personal donations for an endofyear celebration for the Elkhardt program students. Latino Film Festival Update: regarding the film festival, our event will have to be over by 4:30 PM on Saturday, November 6th so the theatre has a chance to start usual evening movie schedule. The Byrd Theater manager, Todd, is willing to work with local merchants in Carytown. Regarding weekend matinee family films prior to the festival, Ms. Ingber will task intern to search for family oriented films in English or Spanish with subtitles. Ms. Gonzales has been tasked to invite consular representatives of the five countries celebrating bicentennials. Regarding a reception on the evening of November 5th, we are free to bring caterer. The entrance fee is still being worked out. McKenna Brown is working on this as he has a long standing relationship with the Byrd Theatre. ESO Update: Last day of the program was April 26. A field trip to the Science Museum will take place May 16th where all Elkhardt and VCU students will participate. Admission cost to the museum is still being worked on for 810 students. President Seymour suggested having a cookout at her house after May 15 for the Elhkardt and VCU students. A motion was moved and seconded to work on an endofyear celebration and buy something for the kids involved. RFP: A motion was moved and seconded to approve that the council submits application for Ford Driving Dreams through Education grants. LULAC National Council sent email announcing the opportunity for (10) grant awards of $20K each. President Seymour will use ESO information and will get additional measurable outcomes from Doug Garcia. The deadline to apply is May 21. Announcements: • Maricel QuintanaBaker is retiring. Although she will no longer be a Board 1
member, she will still continue to be a member of LULAC Council 4611. President Seymour presented a small gift as token of appreciation. Doug Garcia is moving to a new career endeavor in Washington D.C. He was also presented with a small gift and President Seymour thanked him for his efforts and commitment with the kids in the ESO program.
