NEIGHBORH RHOOD

Y

ou can find a suburban, familyoriented feel in the city, and neighborhoods like Ashburton, Coldspring/ Newtown, Forest Park, Cheswolde, Glen, Howard Park, and Windsor Hills prove it. This area is a diverse collection of stone cottages, ranchers, rowhouses, and large single-family detached homes with plenty of room to roam. There is also diversity in the culture, including strong Jewish and African American communities. From the northwest, it’s easy to get downtown, but in such tightly knit neighborhoods with plenty of local services, it’s also easy to stay home. Highlights: Hanlon Park, Lake Ashburton, Forest Park Golf Course, Pimlico Race Track (home of the Triple Crown Preakness Stakes).

Northern

T

he northernmost neighborhoods, like Roland Park, Guilford, Cedarcroft, and Mt. Washington offer an upscale secluded/wooded feel. For more of a mix of urban and suburban, move a few blocks closer to downtown to Waverly, Medfield, Wyman Park, or Hampden, with great shopping on “The Avenue” and some inspired Christmas displays. Head a few more blocks south and you’re in Charles Village, with its famous “painted ladies” homes and a bit of an academic, college-town feel. Highlights: Sherwood Gardens, Jones Falls, Cylburn Arboretum, Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Village at Cross Keys, Waverly Farmers Market and Druid Hill Park.

Northeastern ardenville, Ednor Gardens, and Lakeside are accurate descriptions for an area that also includes Original Northwood, Mayfield, Belair-Edison, Lauraville and Cedonia. Lots of parks, open spaces, and shopping areas within walking distance give these neighborhoods an almost rural, small town feel. But this area is far from suburban cookie cutter. The Northeast offers some of the city’s most diverse housing styles, especially if you’re looking for a single-family detached dwelling. You can even find a few over looking a golf course or two! Highlights: Mt. Pleasant Park & Golf Course, Herring Run Park, Clifton Park Golf Course, and Lake Montebello (a haven for rollerbladers and joggers).

lmost destroyed to make way for I-95, Federal Hill and Otterbein have since been meticulously restored and renovated over the past three decades. Today, that spirit of renewal has spread to up-and-coming neighborhoods like Locust Point, Brooklyn, Riverside Park, Ridgely’s Delight, Union Square, Washington Village, and Barre Circle. All are rich in history and proud of it. Most offer great access to highways and rail systems and are within walking distance to the Inner Harbor, downtown, and the stadiums. Your optons include mostly rowhomes with some new condos along the waterfront. Highlights: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Fort McHenry, M&T Bank Stadium, rooftop decks with postcard views. Federal Hill Park, fresh fish and flowers at Cross Street Market.

Western & Southwestern he rolling, wooded hills of the city are the best way to describe much of the southwest region. While shopping and other conveniences of city life are close, they’re not too close. Neighborhoods like Hunting Ridge, Ten Hills, Westgate, Franklintown Road and the historic mill towns of Dickeyville are filled with larger, single-family homes with all the character of their winding, tree-lined streets. You will find a mix of housing types in areas like Violetville and Irvington, while the southwest also has its share of rowhouses in Rognel Heights and Morrell Park. Highlights: Gwynns Falls, Leakin Park & Trail, Carroll Park Mansion and Golf Course, historic Pennsylvania Avenue, and bike trails.

he culture found in Little Italy, Greektown, and Highlandtown (Polish) is genuine. So is the energy in the revitalized areas like Canton and Fells Point. With plenty of restaurants, shops, and art galleries within walking distance, plus easy water access, and a great view from almost every rooftop deck, there’s little doubt why this area is so hot. Homes are mostly rowhouse style, often fully renovated and many feature waterfront access. For larger rowhomes, check out Butchers Hill, Washington Hill, and the Patterson Park areas. here urban becomes urbane. Marble Hill, Bolton Hill, Mt. Vernon, Reservoir Hill, Seton Hill, and Madison Park are comprised mostly of large scale rowhouse buildings. Fifteen-foot ceilings, plaster moldings, and sitting parlors were built to impress, and they still do. You’ll find some new construction, but much of the area is on the historic registry and deservedly so. (F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Bolton Hill when he wrote “Tender is the Night.”) Within walking distance to many downtown offices, there’s great shopping, dining, art, theatre, and, if you’re lucky, a chance to be cast as an extra in one of many films shot in this area. Highlights: Hippodrome Theatre, Mt. Vernon Square, Lyric Opera House, Artscape, Inner Harbor, Flower Mart, Walters Art Museum, Peabody Institute, Center Stage and public sculpture along Mt. HOUSING FAIR SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 10a.m.–2p.m.

The staff of Howard County Housing

is excited about meeting you at Wilde Lake High School for our 9th Housing Fair. The housing market is growing stronger every day, and a more robust economy creates jobs and provides families with the foundation needed to be secure and productive Howard County residents. However, the housing affordability gap continues to grow and there are families who are still searching for housing stability and economic self-sufficiency. More than just paying rent or a mortgage, housing stability includes a family’s ability to maintain active utilities, purchase quality food, and secure stable, living-wage employment; to manage finances and credit in a way that expands housing options; and to gain knowledge of consumer rights and access to resources like healthcare and recreation. This year’s Housing Fair will be a one-stop-shop for information about buying, renting and quality of life resources. The event will feature about 30 education sessions and 60 exhibitors, bus tours, prize drawings, the Kid’s Fun Zone and a Housing Lottery for a new home priced well below market value.
