What’s On?

Music has helped to rebuild Paul’s life Previously Paul had been hospitalised with pneumonia and renal failure as a result of his alcohol addiction. After being discharged he found himself homeless and isolated.

Paul always had a love of music and, through the help of various charities, he found and joined Sage Gateshead’s Silver Programme, a diverse range of music classes and activities for people over the age of 50. It rekindled his passion for music and helped him on the path to recovery. He said: “I was 55 years old and had enjoyed two successful careers before my addiction left me unemployed, socially isolated, desolate and fighting for life”.

“As you walk into this beautiful building you can immediately sense an atmosphere where people are enjoying themselves with a purpose. The groups are led by experienced and caring tutors and the facilities are excellent.

Paul now sings with Silver Rock Singers and Quicksilver (singing group) but has also enjoyed other groups and guitar classes. Two years ago, he was invited to become a Silver Ambassador.

“I would say to others you can come and leave your past and present issues behind. Learn something new, rediscover qualities that you have lost or forgotten.

He lives in West Denton Park, Newcastle with his partner Kath, having moved there from Gateshead in 2015. Following her retirement Kath joined the Silver programme last year.

“Music means so much in my life and Sage Gateshead has helped me rediscover it. Being part of Silvers has helped me rebuild my life. I know this is where I want to be.”

Paul said: “I am now able to visit my four children and seven grandchildren. I am no longer socially isolated, I attend groups where my past is not known and does not matter, I can engage with people with confidence and have a feeling of self-worth and responsibility.

Sage Gateshead’s Silver Programme is open to anyone over the age of 50 and includes a range of daytime musical activities in a relaxed, friendly and supportive environment. Summer Terms starts from Friday 17 April Visit to view the full range of vocal and instrumental classes.
