SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS SAE HELPS MAKE THE MAGIC HAPPEN AT SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS.

SAE was represented by staff, students and alumni at Splendour in the Grass, which takes place in the beautiful North Byron Parklands. 14 students and three staff members were on-site for four days, getting the experience of a lifetime from the best seats in the house - both back of house and front of stage. We spoke to a few of the SAE crew on-site about their Splendour In The Grass experience. Keeping the party vibes going all weekend is Stage Manager of the popular Tiny Dancer Stage, SAE Brisbane alumni Dylan Hooper. Besides keeping the vibes rolling at Splendour, Dylan the Co-owner and Founder of Twisted Pair Productions, has also been production manager at Falls Festival for the previous two years.

For Dylan, taking on interns at Twisted Pair Productions and assisting students at Splendour is a nice way to return the favour of the education he received. “It’s inspiring to see students so keen and interested in their futures, this is the key to success because you can’t teach enthusiasm,” he says. Susan Youl had a very special journey to Splendour this year. Travelling from Melbourne and camping on-site, she assisted the audio team on the Amphitheatre Stage. Susan came to SAE after spotting the crew backstage working the festival in 2017, wanting to do what they were doing, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Audio at the SAE Melbourne campus.

“I LOVED BEING TUTORED BY SUCH IMMENSE TALENT, I LOVED BEING TAUGHT BY PEOPLE I LOOK UP TO, PEOPLE I AM FRIENDS WITH TO THIS DAY.” TAYA ∙ Electronic Dance Music Artist & SAE Byron Bay Graduate

14 INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTUS / SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS

“This is surreal being here, a year ago I was the one in the crowd dreaming to be involved with live sound, now I’m here backstage networking and doing what I’ve always wanted to do.” Susan has made such an impression on the on-site team that she has been offered paid work once she returns to Melbourne. “After this experience I now know that I have what it takes to make it in the industry, I’ve made my goals a reality,” she said. Closing the festival at Tipi Forest was TAYA, a selfconfessed dream come true for the SAE Byron Bay graduate. The talented DJ and producer had the honor of being named the number one EDM (Electronic Dance

Music) act to see at Splendour 2018 according to OZEDM, Australia’s premier electronic music website. For TAYA, SAE was the best possible place to make meaningful connections “I loved being tutored by such immense talent, I loved being taught by people I look up to, people I am friends with to this day,” he says. Playing the crowd out at Australia’s biggest music festival, this is only the beginning for TAYA. SAE truly makes the magic happen at Splendour In The Grass, both on stage and backstage. Every year, SAE offers students from across the country the chance to intern at Australia’s biggest and most popular music festival, Splendour In The Grass.

“I WANT TO START TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW GENERATION TO COME THROUGH AND TEACH THEM WHAT I KNOW WHILE I’M ALSO STILL ACTIVELY WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY.” Matt Gio ∙ SAE Audio Lecturer & Graduate ∙ SAE Perth Campus

42 INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTUS / LECTURER GLOBAL CONNECTIONS PROFILE

WA INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHT GIVES BACK TO HIS COMMUNITY. Matt Gio has been an active member of the music industry in Perth for over 15 years. Beginning as a touring multi-instrumentalist to currently owning and operating Rada Studio with best friend and colleague Dan Carroll, with whom he shares a friendly rivalry. Located in West Perth, Rada Studios has hosted some of Australia’s most beloved artists. Outside of Rada, Matt also participates in a mentoring program with WAM (West Australian Music), working with artists across remote WA. WAM’s Sounds of initiative works with musicians in local communities, highlighting that wherever there are people, then there will also be great talent. As a testament to the strength of the program, some of the people that Matt has worked with have become respected artists in their own right. In conjunction with this mentoring experience, Matt has now entered the next phase of his career, teaching Audio at SAE. An SAE Perth alumni himself, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor of Audio, Matt was often invited back by the campus to host guest lectures. Joining the teaching staff full time in September 2018, Matt knows this is where he is meant to be. “I want to start to make way for a new generation to come through and teach them what I know while I’m also still actively working in the industry. Ever since studying with SAE it has also been a goal of mine to work there as well.” SAE Perth Audio Lecturer Matt Gio

Matt also won the Best Sound Engineer category at this years WAM Awards alongside Rada colleague Dan, coincidentally SAE is sponsoring the Best Sound Engineer category this year. “Being nominated so many times over the years is awesome recognition and validation of the reputation I have in the industry” Matt says. Contemplating his successful career, Matt’s advice to those wanting to make their mark on the music industry is to put yourself out there and your efforts will be rewarded. Matt wouldn’t want to be doing anything else, “WA has the best music community. As an organisation WAM really fosters the atmosphere of support in our industry and SAE is championing the next generation of talent, I’m extremely proud to be be involved with both.”

THE MORNING AFTER - THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME FOR TWO SAE FILM STUDENTS Two lucky SAE students got the opportunity of a lifetime when they were hand picked to travel to Siem Riep Cambodia to work on indie film project, The Morning After, a short film exploring the concepts of memory and grief. Currently finding great success on the festival circuit, the film has taken out a slew of nominations and awards worldwide. This is the first film produced and directed by Leanne Mangan who also wrote the script, loosely based on her own lived experience. Producer and SAE Melbourne Film lecturer Sean Cousins came on-board when Leanne realised that for The Morning After to come to life, she would have to make it herself and discovered Sean’s company, Filmmaker Abroad during her research.

South East Asia, “the experience was a whirlwind, I got the call to join the team out of the blue and was on my way to Siem Reap before I knew it,” he says. As a testament to his abilities, Felix went on to graduate as the national SAE Dux of his year cohort. Leanne and Sean said Felix did an amazing job with the sound considering the challenges, “Siem Reap is loud, not only in the bustling streets but even in the rice field scenes there was buzzing insects to contend with,” Leanne says. It was wet season when the crew were in Siem Reap to shoot The Morning After, which meant waking at dawn to get the day’s filming done in unfamiliar territory before the daily downpour started every afternoon. “The students had an experience that some graduates wait years to have, and they did amazing work considering the challenging environmental elements,” Sean said. While The Morning After is a work of fiction, Leanne is now working on the script for a follow up feature film. The next instalment will be centred around some extraordinary real-life events that involved some of the Cambodian cast members after filming wrapped up on The Morning After. Felix Parnell on set in Siem Reap

Finding Filmmaker Abroad was serendipitous for Leanne and was the sign she needed to make The Morning After, a reality. A highly-experienced filmmaker working on projects both here and abroad, Sean was the perfect person to guide Leanne and the SAE interns through the process, naturally assuming the role of mentor on-set. Sean’s connection with SAE was also invaluable as the student interns he was able to bring on-board were, in Leanne’s words, “committed to the project from day one, I was absolutely thrilled with their work and assistance.” Felix Parnell was one of the two SAE students who joined the production team in Cambodia (the other being film student Ben Friesen). As an audio student, Felix was already very experienced in location sound. During the course of his studies, Felix had worked on over 30 student films. This working trip was Felix’s first time in

Through Sean’s work with SAE and his company Filmmaker Abroad, there may be more opportunities for exceptional students to travel with Sean on his film projects overseas.

“I REALLY LIKE THE ENVIRONMENT. THERE ARE PLENTY OF TALENTED PEOPLE AT SAE DOING SOME REALLY COOL THINGS - STAFF AND STUDENTS INCLUDED.” Jeremy Smith ∙ Bachelor of Audio Production ∙ SAE Perth Campus

84 INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTUS / A GLOBAL TYPICAL CONNECTIONS WEEK AT SAE

We’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Smith. He is currently studying the Bachelor of Audio Production course at the SAE Perth campus. Here’s how a typical week at SAE plays out for him.

To start off the week, I get some studying done in the morning, before getting the train to school for Music Styles in the afternoon.

Tuesday morning is my favourite class - MIDI and Electronic Music. I’m working on my next assignment, which is an electronic remix.

My day off. I start either by surfing, boating or biking. I spend the afternoon studying/working on assignments, and then work on playlists for my resident DJ set in town.

Morning off. I head to campus for my Studio Production class in the afternoon. I spend the evening in the studio recording a band or working on projects.

After a Creative Project class in the morning, I go to the library to study. My classmates and I usually relax at a local bar before I start work in the evening.

I mostly take it easy on Saturdays by going for a surf or bike ride. Saturday nights I play at various nightclubs supporting some of my favourite local artists.

Sunday gives me the chance to have a relaxing morning then spend the afternoon studying in the sun in my backyard.
