SAE ORIENTATION PACK | Time management

Brisbane | Byron Bay | Sydney | Melbourne | Adelaide | Perth

TIME MANAGEMENT The concept of time management is a myth. Our personal experiences change time. For example boring tasks seem to take forever and fun tasks fly by quickly. We need to manage ourselves to manage our time. Look at yourself when attempting to manage yourself. Where do I waste time? Could I be spending this time better? Even jot it down for the first few weeks so you can see recurring patterns within yourself. This will take practice you are changing your own behaviours!

1. Use a calendar Having a calendar is the most fundamental step to managing your daily activities. Use your phone, computer or whatever works for you. Use your calendar to remind you of upcoming activities or study periods. This will keep your mind open for other things.

2. Set yourself up a weekly planner Include classes and study periods, try and stick to it, you will notice an increase in free time. Review your progress weekly, identify anything that is not working and amend it. Be mindful that as exams approach your routine must also adapt to it.

3. Leave buffer time Don’t pack everything closely together. Leave a 5-10 minute buffer time in between each task. This helps you wrap up the previous task and start off on the next one.

4. Peg a time limit to each task Be clear that you need to finish X task by 10am, Y task by 3pm, and Z item by 5:30pm. This prevents your work from dragging on and eating into time reserved for other activities.

5. Know your deadlines When do you need to finish your tasks? Mark the deadlines out clearly in your calendar or ororganiser so you know when you need to finish them. And target to be early!

6. Learn to say “No” Don’t take on more then you can handle. Saying no to your girlfriend or friends can be hard but the activities can also be deferred to a later date. Delegate if appropriate. For example if you going out for dinner with friends get them to organise a time and place.

7. Prioritise ruthlessly Decide what needs to be done now and what can wait until later. Even if the task is not enjoyable get it done!

8. Focus and block your time Are you multi-tasking so much that you’re just not getting anything done? If so, focus on just one key task at one time. Make all your phone calls at one time, eat lunch then come back to study, multitasking will produce low results. Block your study time, do not give yourself too much study time in a day, set them in hour increments so you can have a break, clear your head, refresh then get back to it. Look at when you are most productive and work towards your strengths.

9. Block out distractions and eliminate time wasters What’s distracting you in your work? Instant messages? Phone ringing? Text messages popping in? These can wait, finish your task then return calls during your allocated phone call time. Calls during this time are recorded and you can contact them afterward if it’s something important. If you look at your phone or answer that text message it will break your concentration and take you longer to get back into the flow of studying. Write down repetitive thoughts that bubble up - this should help to keep them at bay.

10. Dedicated study spaces. Determine a place free from distraction (no mobile or emailing!) where you can maximise your concentration and be free of the distractions that friends or hobbies can bring! If you are stagnating, a change of venue can lead to a change of ideas.

11.Don’t fuss about unimportant details. You’ll never get everything done in exactly the way you want. Trying to do so is being ineffective. Stop working when you have done a sufficient amount. Move onto something else. Perfectionism is an unproductive practice.

12.Be organised - Plan ahead Do you have everything required to complete that task? No? move on… Yes? Do it! Is something slowing you down? Poor filing? Redo it!

13.Use your time efficiently and don’t waste time waiting What do you do on the tram here? Could you be doing some study? From client meetings to dentist appointments, it’s impossible to avoid waiting for someone or something. But you don’t need to just sit there and twiddle your thumbs. Always take something to do with you, such as a report you need to read, notes you need to review, or emails that you need to send.

14.Identify helpful resources Do you have friends who can help you if you get stuck? Lecturers? Libraries? Write these down for so you have your resources at the ready when you need them.

15.Realise distraction will happen There will always be days where you just can’t work and days where you will be on such a roll you will work for 12 hours. Roll with this, it is normal.

16.Work around procrastination Complete your planning or small tasks if you get stuck procrastinating big tasks.

17.Break down the unreasonable Assignments will not complete themselves in a day - realise this and break them into small manageable pieces.

18.Create a simple “To Do” list This simple program will help you identify a few items, the reason for doing them, a time-line for getting them done, and then printing this simple list and posting it for reminders.

19.Getting started What is a first step you can identify for an assignment to get yourself started?

Delvinder Singh | Bachelor of Audio - STUDIO PRODUCTION I graduated from SAE Perth in 2015 with a Bachelor in Audio Production and I’m currently working at Maveriq Studios, Malaysia as a resident Sound Engineer. Some of my achievements so far include: • TOMBIRUO, FILM (2017) CREDITED AS SOUND EDITOR & FOLEY EDITOR • 29TH SOUTH EAST ASIAN GAMES (SEA GAMES) TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS RECORDING, VOCAL RECORDING & SOUND DESIGN • YOUNG ADULTS, AN ALBUM BY BIL MUSA, RECORDING ENGINEER (MAJORITY OF ALBUM) • THE NEW EDITION STORY, ELIJAH KELLY AS RICKY BELL (ADR), ASSISTANT ENGINEER What inspired you to enter the career you’re in? Ever since I was young I really liked listening to hip hop especially in my teen years and I always wondered how songs were made, produced and recorded. It was such a big mystery to me that how all that was created and I had the same curiosity when I watched movies because I really liked sound, all my questions were answered when I found out about SAE. What are your career highlights? ust last Year I worked on my very first Feature Film Tombiruo (I was credited as the Sound effects editor and the Foley editor for the film) which was directed by Seth Larne. It was a really really great experience as it was my first movie that I worked on. (You can watch the first 20 minutes for free, it has English Subtitles) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvmBNINHn4c&t=1091s

AARON WELCH | DIPLOMA OF SCREEN (ANIMATION) SAE alumnus Aaron Welch has taken his passion for animation and turned it into his own creative digital media agency, Red Bird Creative. What inspired you to enter the career you’re in? For as long as I can remember I’ve been playing computer and console games. When I finished high school, I studied multimedia wanting a career in something creative. After working as a graphic designer, I travelled for a couple of years, before returning home to revaluate what I wanted as a career. With a simple flashback to my multimedia course I realised the unit I enjoyed the most was 3D animation, so when I saw SAE advertise their 3D animation diploma course I knew I had the answer. What advice would you give to students aspiring to become successful in their field? Network, network and network. Do not wait until you graduate. Speaking from experience, I waited until I graduated at the beginning of 2010 and it took me a solid year of getting out there and meeting people before I got my break. Know what you love, what your passion is and follow that with persistence, dedication and don’t give up when it gets hard.

KRISTOPHER HOWL | Bachelor of games I have been working in the games industry for five years now, all over the world. In Sydney, Adelaide, Montreal and even Helsinki. Working on titles such as Rainbow Six: Vegas and Far Cry 2, primarily as a Level Designer - I also contribute to gaming communities such as Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and design my own games in spare time. What have you been up to since leaving SAE? Through SAE I made some contacts for work both during the course and after the course. I pursued web design as intended, up until 2003 when I joined the video games industry as a level designer, at Micro Forte in Sydney. What advice would you give to future SAE students? You have to make it work for you...There is so much free content out there from industry professionals, talks and tutorials, opinion pieces and some great pod casts – absorb everything you can, form your own opinions, let people see how passionate you are. Also, don’t be deterred from exploring overseas. Be aware of what countries are easy to obtain working permits/VISA’s within. For example, the USA has an Australian specific VISA that is easily obtainable with a bachelor’s and no work experience. All you have to have is an offer from a company over there. So, build up your portfolio, work on your presentation and start approaching them!
