Not only is food one of humanity's basic needs, it is an element that is essential to living a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. Here we learn about better living through healthy eating and transformed diet, with delicious recipes and trending food practices.

Tamsin Musgrave Cupful of Kale Born and raised vegetarian, recipe creator and food photographer, Tamsin Musgrave, made the transition to vegan last year and created her blog, Cupful of Kale, to help and inspire those wanting to cook more plant-based foods. She creates mostly healthy, always vegan and easy-to-follow recipes. You’ll find nourishing, wholesome and comforting meals as well as sweet treats for every occasion and craving. Tamsin believes that healthy eating is all about balance and wants to prove that eating vegan doesn’t have to be boring.

Black Bean, Kale and Sriracha Burgers Ingredients 1 large red onion 2 cartons black beans 2 cups packed kale 1 tsp. mixed dried herbs 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. smoked paprika 1 tsp. smoked garlic granules

1-2 tbsp. sriracha 1 tsp. dried chili flakes 1 flax egg 2 tbsp. flour + extra for dusting 4 burger buns Toppings of choice

Directions 1. Finely dice the onion and fry until translucent. 2. Add the black beans to a mixing bowl and mash with the back of a fork/potato masher. Leave some whole. 3. Roughly chop the kale and place in a bowl with a couple tbsp. of water and cook in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Or boil in a pan. 4. Drain the kale and add along with the onion, spices, chopped chili, flour and flax egg. Give it a good stir and leave in the fridge for half an hour. 5. Heat some oil in a pan on medium heat (griddle pan works well to keep shape).

6. Divide the mixture into 4 and dust the chopping board in flour. Shape into 4 burgers and coat each side with a little flour. 7. Depending on how big your pan is, place 2-4 in at a time. Fry for 5-6 minutes on each side until crispy and brown. 8. Toast your buns, add the burgers to the buns, and toppings of your choice. I added vegan cheese, vegan mayo, sriracha, hummus, and rocket.

Grilled Cajun and Orange Tofu Skewers Ingredients 1 block / 225g extra firm tofu 2 tbsp. maple syrup 1 tbsp. soy sauce

1 tbsp. cajun spice 1 orange 1 tsp smoked garlic granules

Directions 1. Cut the block into 12 square pieces. If your tofu is not firm, you will need to squeeze out as much water as you can first. 2. Juice the orange and mix with all the other ingredients together in a bowl/Pyrex dish. You want to use something that will cover most of the tofu in the marinade. 3. Place the tofu pieces in the marinade and pop into the fridge. If the pieces are not completely covered, turn them over after an hour. You should notice that the tofu has started to turn an orangey/ brown colour. Leave for at least two hours to soak up the flavours.

4. Half an hour before you are ready, soak some skewers in cold water. 5. Heat a griddle pan on medium heat with a small amount of oil. Place 4 pieces of tofu on a skewer (you may need to cut the skewers in half so they fit in the pan). Alternatively, grill on the BBQ. 7. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until they are sticky and browned. Pour over the leftover juice as you are cooking them.

MADISON STEWART Ocean Conservationist and Filmmaker @sharkgirlmadison

While most people find sharks terrifying, Madison Stewart finds them every bit extraordinary. Madison’s affinity for dangerous animals started when she was young, and her fascination with sharks has only grown. Madison has dedicated herself to the conservation of sharks. She is spreading this message by filming these majestic creatures. In Blue, Madison talks about how sharks have been perceived in today’s society and debunk the Hollywood myth that sharks will attack anyone and anything. She also covers the fishing industry and how sharks are being hunted for food, medicine, and sport. She is shocked by people willing to turn a blind eye to the injustices inflicted on sharks but offers ways that people can help from home, such as approaching local restaurants and fish and chip shops that sell flake, writing letters to the government, and pushing back media that demonizes sharks. Madison’s activism has not gone unnoticed. She earned the AG Young Conservationist of the Year Award and plans to continue her efforts in changing public opinions of sharks so we can protect and preserve them for many generations to come.

Tell us about your journey. How did you get started? It all started for me when I was a kid... I would dive with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef and one time I went back and the number of sharks I was seeing decreased dramatically. I later found out that there was a legal shark fishing industry operating inside the Great Barrier Reef marine park and this truly lead me down the path of conservation.

but are possible for everyone. Everyone should be fighting for something they love.

What do you believe is your purpose in life? I believe my purpose in life is to make films. I think I enjoy editing and people seem to like what I put together so if there is an important story to tell, I think I can help by telling it.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration in life?

How has your journey connected you more with the earth/nature?

This is a difficult question, there aren’t too many people in my field to look up to. I would say my partner, Perrin is one, he’s an underwater cinematographer. I look up to him a lot because of how he is in the water, he treats animals with respect and always acts as part of the ecosystem and not top of it, in my work with film crews, I’ve not seen many people do this.

It’s funny I have actually become disconnected to earth and nature through my work. Think about it... I used to be all about diving with sharks and having fun and being in nature... now all I do is document dead sharks and look at the human impact. I rarely get into the water to have fun, I rarely get time with the animals I love anymore.

What is the most important thing for What is your hope for the future? you to communicate and educate the I hope that the laws change to world with? I think aside from my messages about sharks and products in their everyday life that contains sharks, the most important message is that activism and conservation are not only essential,

protect animals more and that things in Australia change so that sharks are safe.

What is a quote you live by? “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”

You’re so dedicated and work so hard, what is a way you recharge your soul? Surfing, my friends, and family and having a completed project ready to share and show the world.

What is Sacred to you? The shark: a dinosaur, a legend, a powerful and beautiful animal that years of evolution have made perfect.

Joanna Letz Founder of Bluma Farm

Bluma Farms is located on 2 acres in Sunol, California. The founder, Joanna Letz growsover 100 different types of flowers and vegetables, and is committed to the sustainability of everyday agriculture. It all started in 2008 when Joanna fell in love with farming, but was disheartened to hear that most people’s ideas on farms were either get big or get out. Despite this, her passion and innovation grew and in 2014 she opened Bluma Farms with the commitment to help restore local agriculture by growing a wide variety of flowers. By doing so Letz supports the vast numbers of insects and pollinators which preserves the biodiversity of all living creatures on her farm. Farming is a way of life for Joanna Letz, and a way to bring people together, reconnect with the cycles of life and some of the most basic things we rely on; plants.

Tell us a little about yourself. What inspired you to start Bluma Flower Farm? I started Bluma Farm in the fall of 2014. I started farming in 2008 and fell in love with the life and work. Since then I have dreamed of one day starting my own farm. I thought about beginning a farming career after I traveled for eight months with a group of students to five countries looking at the effects of globalization on small farmers. I was disheartened by many of the things I saw happening to small farmers across the globe. It was on this trip that I realized the importance of small organic and diversified farms. In part as a response to the current trend around the world of “get big or get out”, I decided to see what working on a small diversified organic farm was really about. I apprenticed for a number of years before managing a small farm myself. I had the great opportunity to work with and learn from many long-time organic farmers in California. I want to make farming my livelihood. For me, farming is a way of life. A re-connection to the cycles of life, the seasons, and to some of the very basic things we depend on; plants. I started farming with a desire

to work with my hands, be outside, and be of service to people and the planet. As a farmer there is never has a dull moment. I feel privileged to be involved in growing flowers and taking care of the soil, waterways, land, air, and people.

What do you love most about Bluma Flower Farm and the path that you have chosen? I love getting to work outside. I feel privileged to get to experience and learn about the animal and insect life on my farm. I love looking up and seeing the hawks and swallows and owls on the farm. In my profession there is never a dull moment, there is always something new to learn. From tractor driving and mechanics, to soil and plant biology to marketing and sales. And I get to do design with my flowers–making arrangements for weddings and events–I get to use the artistic part of my personality. I love thinking about color and what flowers look good together.

What was a defining moment in your journey? My Grandfather Isaac Silber kept a large garden. This was my first exposure to plants and farming. I vividly remember the wild zucchini

plants and my Grandfather’s delicious honey. It was these memories that helped bring me into the farming world. My grandparents on both sides had hoped to make a livelihood off of farming. My family is all Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. My Mother’s family came to this country just after WWII. My grandparents survived in hiding in Poland. My Mother was born in a Displaced Persons camp in Munich just before the family received visas to come to the U.S. Now I’m taking up that torch of farming. In Europe farming was something most families did at least on the kitchen garden scale. Growing plants was normal for my grandparents.

How has your journey changed from when you first started? I got into farming from the perspective of wanting to deepen my relationship to the land, to the plants we eat and the cycles of the seasons. I still love this part of my job but now I am also focused on what it means to be a small business owner and thinking about decisions from the perspective of how can I make this work for me for the long haul.

Share with us your new adventures you wish to explore going forward. I am working towards having a more balanced life. I am a dancer and looking forward to making more time in my life to dance. I recently started taking flamenco classes again! I am also spending more time with family and friends!

What are some important world issues that you feel we need to be conscious about? Being more aware of how the decisions we make affect the people around us and the rest of the world. Right now I am thinking about how families are being torn apart on our borders for crossing illegally. There is no reason to separate families. As a farmer, I know how much work it takes to grow vegetables and flowers! I wish that more people could understand this on an intimate level. I think our world would be a better place if we all could grow even just a few plants. Growing plants is humbling. I wish for more people to have access to land to grow food on. And for everyone to have access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

What is your hope for the future? I hope that our society can better respect and compensate small organic farmers. We all need to eat! And I also believe flowers bring us great joy and this is important to our well being! It is hard as a small organic grower to make a living and not go crazy trying to do it. I hope our society can offer more support for the people who are doing work that we all depend on! I hope that organic agriculture will be a larger part of everyone’s lives.

Maybe trying to set aside more land in the cities to grow food. And forthe government to offer more resources to small organic growers! What is Sacred to you? Being kind. Cooking food for myself and others. Taking care of the soil and growing plants. Setting aside time for things I enjoy, for meditation and dance and for my family and friends. Trying to be present for those around me and to take action when action is needed!

BLUE O’CONNOR Founder of Kings Grooming The founder of Kings Grooming and former aerospace engineer, Blue O’Connor, created a line of vegan and cruelty-free aftershaves and moisturizers that will help improve people’s lives in different ways.Inspired by his own experiences and metal health challenges, O’Connor has partnered with to large high impact charities in the UK; Mentoring Plus and Bristol Mind, who are dedicated to mental health issues in men 20% of all Kings Grooming profit goes to male mental health and youth mentoring projects. O’Connor has recently opened a crowdfunding page in hopes to raise £10,000 with sales of aftershave and ethical t-shirts. His hope is to encourage men to challenge the impractical ideas that modern society holds men to today. Support Blue’s crowdfunding campaign at:

Tell us a little about yourself. What inspired you to create Kings? After an extended period of travel, I returned to the UK in August 2015. On my arrival home, I decided to change my career, became a youth mentor, drive the conversation forward about men’s mental health and generally become more active in society. At that time, I was struggling to find grooming products that matched my personal morals, values, and lifestyle. There seemed to be no quality aftershaves that were ethically produced, vegan and cruelty-free. And there were definitely no aftershaves that ‘gave back’ to causes close to my heart. Out of this frustration, the idea for Kings–a grooming business with a mission–was born. I decided to create a ‘social enterprise’ that would reinvest 20% of its profits to empower men to live healthier and happier lives. Kings collaborates with partner charities–Bristol Mind and Mentoring Plus to achieve our mission but we also have our own social project.

I want to build outdoor urban gyms to coach young men in the physical activity known as calisthenics (bodyweight exercises). I want to locate them in areas of deprivation, similar to areas of deprivation, similar to those where I grew up. The aim is to improve young men’s health, fitness and mental wellbeing, as well as raise their aspirations for the future. But this is just the start. As Kings grows as a business, so will its social impact! I’ve got an array of ideas I want to bring to life.

What do you hope to achieve with this brand?

I hope to build a brand that is well known for selling high quality and ethical male grooming products and for giving back to men’s mental health I want our logo to be a sign of empowerment and transformation. Something men can be proud to wear. I want to start a movement on modern men who are redefining masculinity on their own terms.

n n

What was a defining moment in your journey? The defining moment so far was successfully pitching and being taken on for the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) ‘Start-Up’ business programme and grant. This was a difficult three-stage application process, which really made me think –“I’ve got an idea that may actually work here.” Having other people believe in myidea and to see it gain positive feedback really fueled me to turn this idea into an actuality. It has taken me 13 months from an idea in the shower to be ready to press the button on our first batch of manufacturing. All we needto do now is raise £10,000 via our crowdfunding campaign at

I have grown in confidence and on reflection, I still can’t believe I’m actually doing this. If you would have told me that I’d be launching my own brand five years ago then I’d think you’d had one too many drinks. My idea has been refined month by month. I have worked hard to create a clear message on what the brand stands for and the social impact we are trying to achieve in the world. I love what the outcome has been so far and I’m proud to be launching this idea to the public. I have grown in confidence and on reflection, I still can’t believe I’m actually doing this. If you would have told me that I’d be launching my own brand five years ago then I’d think you’d had one too many drinks.

How has your journey changed from when you first started?

What are some important world issues that you feel we need to be conscious about?

My idea has been refined month by month. I have worked hard to create a clear message on what the brand stands for and the social impact we are trying to achieve in the world. I love what the outcome has been so far and I’m proud to be launching this idea to the public.

There are so many world issues at the moment and I think it’s important to just play your role and pick one issue that you are really passionate about. Otherwise, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed with the myriad of challenges we currently face.

I’m passionate about two subjects. Mental health and young people but I also believe one of the biggest impacts under our control is where we choose to spend our money. By consciously thinking about what we buy on a daily basis, we can make drastic changes in the world.

What is your hope for the future? I hope that social enterprises around the world will become the norm in five to ten years. I truly believe businesses owe it to have little or no negative impact on the world around us and secondly to reinvest some of their money into improving the society we live in. There is no greater value than this.

What is a quote you live by? I love a good quote and I write a new one down every day so this is a tough question for me! At the moment I really like: “You can choose courage or you can choose comfort, you cannot have both” – Brene Brown. When certain things make me feel uncomfortable, they are usually the one thing that I really need to do in that moment in time in order to learn, grow and experience something new.

What is Sacred to you?

My partner who I am marrying very soon (next week!), my 7-month-old son, my dog, my parents, my family and my friends. At the end of the day, people are the greatest value in my life. I’m only able to launch Kings because of the support and stability behind me. Many people have played their part in getting me to this point of the road.

Sarah Biggers Founder of Clove + Hallow

After bestruck by a mysterious illness that left founder of Clove + Hallow, Sarah Biggers, bedridden, depressed, with frequent panic attacks, she made the choice to live a cleaner lifestyle. She changed her skin care and soap products and saw a long-term improvement in her health. However, when it came to cosmetics, Biggers found that there weren’t many choices and the companies that carried clean products didn’t have much range. This was all it took to ignite Sarah’s passion and the launch of Clove + Hallow. All of the ingredients in her products have been carefully researched and replaced the more questionable chemicals found in cosmetics in large corporations. All Clove + Hallow products are also vegan and cruelty-free. Born from a passion for cosmetics and an ever-growing interest in clean living Sarah Biggers plans on making Clove + Hallow the ‘MAC’ of clean cosmetics.

What inspired you to create CLOVE + HALLOW? “Inspired” is too soft of a word, because the truth is that I was so consumed by the need to create this dream makeup line of mine that I don’t think there was ever another option. Ultimately, the final straw was the repetitive act of having to tell my clientele that I didn’t know of any clean, cruelty-free and vegan products that would work for them because everything on the market was too sheer, too expensive, or too limited in shade range.

Have you always believed in green beauty? No. Like most people, my awareness of green beauty stemmed from becoming immersed in an overall clean and green lifestyle a few years ago. It seems crazy in hindsight, but back then I never even considered what went into the products I put on my skin – I was a total consumer junkie and purchased whatever was trending. After I got sick and holistic medicine was the only thing that cured me, I became much more conscientious of ingredients, which naturally progressed into an interest in green beauty.

Why do you think there’s been an interest in natural or green beauty makeup? I believe we’re living in an era of awakening. Ingredients are important, but I think consumers really just want companies to be transparent so they can make informed decisions for themselves. This desire for transparency has snowballed into a very aware, educated, and conscientious demographic of consumers who are committed to better understanding what they are putting on their bodies. And once you know, you can’t un-know, so lots of people end up turning to green beauty for solutions.

What is the one thing that you want to teach people about green beauty? With CLOVE + HALLOW, I hope to prove that clean, cruelty-free and vegan products can compete with their conventional counterparts. Our industry has come a long way over the last few years, but there is still definitely, a stigma attached to clean/green/natural beauty. By creating pro-grade products that I can keep in my personal and professional makeup artist kits, I am confident that green beauty doesn’t have to come with sacrifices or changes in expectations and I want to share that with people.

What was a defining moment in your journey? There have been so many! The most defining moment is actually predated by of a series of moments when things have gone wrong – and not just mildly wrong, but epically, horribly, terribly wrong. I’ve built up a thick skin and developed hefty confidence in my ability to figure things out as they happen. Most recently, we had a big issue with a future product release and I was stressed but I wasn’t panicked because I knew my team and I would do our best and things would be okay. That was a huge “aha” moment for me.

How has it changed from when you first started? In the beginning, there was a constant fear of things not working out. Each decision felt like it could be the one that would make or break CLOVE + HALLOW. To compensate, I worked incessantly; I’d wake up at 5am, to work from bed for a few hours before going into the office, come back home around 7pm, and stay up working in bed until 2am. I barely slept and was running on pure adrenaline. It was super unhealthy but also really exciting – the world was my oyster!

Now I have a great team which allows me to keep a little separation between my personal and professional lives. It is amazing.

Share with us your new adventures you wish to explore going forward. As a business owner, I am really excited by the opportunity to keep adding and developing amazing talent on our team. I love people, so the idea of bringing more into our family makes me so excited. Product-wise, I am really looking forward to building out our skincare and body care categories.

What is a quote you live by? “The best way past is through.” I think it is human nature to want to skip ahead to the good stuff or look for shortcuts to get to the end without having to go through the middle. I truly believe that the middle is the most important part; it’s where we grow and learn all of the important lessons. This quote never fails to remind me to enjoy the process rather than fixate on when the process will be over.

What is Sacred to you? Sleep. I’m just happier, healthier, faster, and so much better when I give myself permission to prioritize sleep. It is an act of self-care for me. By viewing it as something Sacred, it isn’t even a question – when the chips are down, I will choose to sleep over almost anything else without feeling bad about it.

HUDA ALVI Influencer, Founder of Workshops by Huda, and Co-Founder of The Girls Trip

Huda Alvi has always had the entrepreneurial spirit. At just 18 years old, she had already started her own business selling newspapers and magazines door-todoor. At 25, she opened her own recruitment firm, Istaff Management and her drive for business has only continued to grow from there with new ventures such as a tech start-up. Huda has used her social influence to inspire and empower other women by talking about her own personal struggles and encouraging others to share their stories as well. Her journey as a social influencer came in January of 2016 when she used Instagram as a creative outlet and decided to use her influence to help people. Today, Huda inspires young women through speaking engagements and panel discussions and her social movement called #IAMMORE which inspires men and women to share their own personal stories and show that there’s more to them than what you first see.

Tell us a little about yourself. What is the most fulfilling thing about being an Influencer? I identify myself as a woman before anything else. I’m a mother, stepmother, wife and social entrepreneur. Being called an influencer and having the potential to influence people I consider myself lucky. Having a platform like Instragram, Facebook or any other social media allows induvial who have a voice to stand up and ask questions, raise concerns, bring forth issues and much more. For me, that has been the most fulfilling journey I’ve had the chance to lead for the past 3 years. It’s amazing to see how many people love hearing raw and real stories and how many people are silenced and quiet because for reasons of their own. It’s nice to be able to share a voice that speaks for all sorts of women and for me that’s a much bigger feeling than anything else.

What do you love most about the path that you have chosen? I love the fact that I meet so many women every day. Women who are hustling, women who are building careers, women who are chasing their dreams, women who are searching and overall women who are just simply amazing!

What was a defining moment in your journey? The most defining moment for me was when I decided to leave my unhealthy and unhappy marriage at the age of 22. Becoming a single mother of two was not easy and it did not help that I was young, had no money and no work experience. I got remarried at the age of 27 to the love of my life and I believe have been giving a second chance at life and there is no way I’m not going to live my best life now!

How has it changed from when you first started? Wow‌everything has changed and continues to change. Change is inevitable and the sooner you realize that the quicker you adopt to situations and your reactions to things.

Share with us your new adventures you wish to explore going forward. My sister and I just started a new travel company called The Girls Trip ( Our company allows women to get out of their comfort zones and travel the world through our curated experiences while paying for all this through a payment plan. Did you know that every year the number of women travelling doubles? That’s a huge number of women deciding to take their future and lives seriously and wanting to make new connections and go beyond the norm of living an average life. Our company curates all the experiences for you and you get to meet amazing women while doing it all. We want to make travel affordable and at the same time allow women the opportunities to travel solo or with a friend, so they can live more fulfilled and happier lives. What better way then travelling!

What are some important world issues that you feel we need to be conscious about? Education in rural and third world countries for girls are extremely important to me. Both my daughter and I often talk about how we can help and how young girls can turn into stronger, educated and empowered women. It’s our goal to be able to open up a school someday and teach girls life skills along with education that will get them to far places.

How do you empower people to make a change? Speak from the heart and tell people they are not alone. Unfortunately, many girls and women believe the other one has it better, but the truth is we are all in it together with equally busier lives. We all just happen to be at different stages that’s all. When a woman rises so does the one next to her. I instill confidence in women and that is what I live for by being open on my social media, by putting together small workshops and events curated for women to be inspired and build new connections.
