The state of fear in 2014 HALLOWEEN GIVES CITY COLLEGE students the opportunity to choose their fears in a celebratory, escapist fashion.

Playing with makeup and fog machines is a refreshing respite from actual fears about post-college employment and student debt.

As a mixture of fledgling adults and seasoned learners, City College students have replaced the plastic, factory-pressed, rubber-band-strapped superhero masks of their youth with a veneer rooted in over-confidence and ambition.

City College students today love to be scared of a bleak reality because it mirrors their own outlook of their projected futures. This dilutes the impact of Halloween and reduces it to the equivalent of an autumn version of non-religious Easter: a reason to have a party and eat candy.

Even though the economic reconstruction has begun in the aftermath of the latest recession, it is still so much easier to revel in the carnal response evoked by zombies, vampires and torturecentric horror movies rather than face the reality of having to survive in a harsher job climate than those of generations before us.

In fact, an entire media culture has been successful in capitalizing on the 18 to 49 age block, the main group of college

and students today .

With its fall premiere, “The Walking Dead” on AMC broke the record for cable TV ratings with 17 million viewers, the majority of whom are in the under-50 age bracket. Based on a graphic novel, the show is centered on the American populace surviving a post-apocalyptic outbreak of zombies.

This targeted population keeps growing. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, between 2000 and 2011, the enrollment of students under age 25 increased by 35 percent. For students 25 and over, enrollment grew by 41 percent during the same period. From 2011 to 2021, NCES projects a 13 percent hike in enrollments of students under 25, and a rise of 14 percent in enrollments of students 25 and over.

With popular culture tapping into the national apprehension of a dismal future through shows like “The Walking Dead” or HBO’s “The Leftovers,” the premise of which is based on the after-effects of a rapture-like event, media have bled yearround into the realm that Halloween has monopolized since the early 20th century.

In the real world, media have been consumed by a more realistic pandemic: the spread of the Ebola virus. Although the virus’ effects do not have as much

entertainment appeal as undead loved ones walking around trying to eat people, the fear of its outbreak domestically has permeated our national consciousness.

According to a poll released by the Harvard School of Public Heath, 39 percent of American adults are concerned about an actual large Ebola outbreak in the U.S. The startling statistic is how many of those concerned are uneducated: 50 percent. Compared to the 36 percent of those who have had some college and the 24 percent who are college graduates, the majority of actual fear belongs to the segment of population that is least likely to learn the facts about Ebola, a real health crisis in other countries.

That’s why fantasy catastrophic entertainment is so popular. Maybe that’s what fear is for City College students in 2014 — not the carnival of unrealistic horrors on which we satisfy our sweet tooth, but the realization that the more we as students learn and grow, the less we have to be truly afraid of. Which makes the truly scary stuff, like job security and career success, so much more potent.

As Halloween approaches, whatever your 2014 fears may be, remember that higher education is the best defense against any concerns rooted in the supernatural or in reality. 

Making law school accessible

City College, universities, law schools partnered for smooth road to law degree Will Dunne-Phillips Staff Writer // willdunnephillips@yahoo.com CITY COLLEGE, OFTEN CITED as one of the most diverse campuses in the region, has been chosen out of 112 community colleges in the state to participate in a new program, “Pathways to Law School,” beginning in 2015.

City College, among 23 other community colleges in California, was selected for the new law school pilot program, facilitated in association with the California State Bar Council and California’s higher education facilities.

The program is based on a “2+2+3” model. The first two years of the program will begin at the community college level, the next two will be at the university level, and the remaining three will be completed in law school, according to Dr. Mary Turner, City College vice president of instructional services.

“The program focuses the students on a set of courses that they would take at the community college, facilitates their transfer to a four year institution that is connected to a law school, and again facilitates their transition into a law school so they can complete in two years, two years and three years,” said. Turner.

The program targets new students entering City College who have the eventual goal of law school. According to Turner, this tiered program will be very beneficial to future students who plan to pursue a law degree.

“There is no guaranteed movement [in college],” Turner said. “This [program] actually guarantees the student admission into law school.”

Six California law schools will participate in the program, including the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, UC San Francisco School of Law, UC Davis School of Law, UC Irvine School of Law, Santa Clara University School of Law, and Loyola Law School.

Because colleges become very impacted and the amount of time it takes to get a degree can vary wildly from student to student, the “Pathways” program is designed to work with the student so that the seven-year goal is actually met, Turner said.

City College is also putting together an advisory committee for the program consisting of law school professors who will counsel and mentor students while they complete their coursework.

“Students will get early exposure to law school and the tools that they need to

be successful in law school,” said Turner.

“We will hold debates for the students so they get used to that process, and support of their legal positions early on.”

The Pathways to Law School program will provide students with assistance in financial aid and bar association scholarships, preparation for the LSAT (law school admission test), and even waiving law school application fees, Turner said.

“We know that our community colleges have the diversity and talent that the State Bar seeks to enhance the diversity pipeline into the legal profession, as evidenced by many prominent judges and lawyers who attended community colleges,” said State Bar CEO Joseph Dunn. “I am particularly grateful to the six law school deans for partnering in this important initiative to increase the diversity and overall quality of the legal profession.”

The Pathways to Law School program will combine general education requirements, existing City College criminal justice curriculum, as well as new courses that will be announced.

Turner said that City College will be working with local high schools as well as interested new students for enrollment in the program in the 2015 school year. 

AS HALLOWEEN APPROACHES, GHOULISH attractions and shows rise to frighten and delight scare-seekers. This year, the Express visited four of the region’s headliner haunted houses.

Heartstoppers Haunted House 2300 MINE SHAFT LANE, Rancho Cordova ADMISSION: $20 TO $25, depending on the night you attend Located at what used to be the Mine Shaft arcade and mini golf course about 20 miles from campus, Heartstoppers houses five haunted attractions through October.

Deadlands

This Wild West haunt is in the Mine Shaft’s basement. Well-timed scares and a creative theme runs through the entire haunt.

Bad puns on the level of Disney’s Jungle Cruise were awesome. Though rated medium on the scariness, it was one of the better-produced attractions.

Steamghàst Asylum

Blood on the Bayou

Dr. Lash’s Sideshow

The Tomb of Shadows was possibly our least favorite haunt because it was so stressful. It is a completely blacked out, find-your-way-in-thedark affair. Overall, the experience was more frustrating than frightening.

This outdoor attraction had a voodoo theme and lots of creepy kids interacting with scare-seekers. The constant threat of human sacrifice was unnerving. The mini golf course was used to surprisingly great effect and gets bonus points for creativity.

For traditional scares, the Asylum was really good. There were unnerving situations, and some excellent acting. The butcher scene in the attraction had lots of gore. The final scare sent us running out of the room.

As the name suggests, this haunt was creepy circus-themed. This side show was kind of weak compared to the other available scares.

Corbett’s Grindhouse of Horrors 360 NORTH SUNRISE AVE., Roseville ADMISSION: $20

Carn-Evil

Corbett’s is right across from the Roseville Automall, about 20 miles from campus, and is absolutely worth the trip. Corbett’s is set up in a large warehouse, and roamers — ghouls who creep around the area and are not tied to a specific attraction — keep guests on their toes even when not in one of their three haunts.

Corbett’s House

A well-done traditional haunted house, with a detail-oriented set design. Tributes to iconic spooks like Chuckie and Slender Man were very effective.

More creative than frightening, this circusthemed attraction featured black walls painted with fluorescent paint, and lit with black lighting. This sounds relatively normal — and it is — until you put on 3D glasses. The whole attraction shifts into a pop-out, disorienting experience.

Zombieland

If you brave only one haunt this year, make it this one. In the midst of a zombie outbreak, patrons are armed with laser guns, and get to “shoot” the oncoming zombie hordes. Very well-executed environments, including a hospital, plane crash site and wrecked cars along a would-be stretch of highway, and excellent zombies.

High levels of fun and fright in this very interactive attraction.

Scream Park California 4909 AUBURN BLVD., Sacramento ADMISSION: $20 TO $40, depending on date and level of access About 12 miles from campus in a warehouse not-too-far from Highway 80, Scream Park houses three attractions.

Asylum

Bad Acid Trip

This attraction is very dark, and patrons are given a dim flashlight to light the way through the scares. Doctors and patients alike have lost their minds in this creepy asylum.

Much like the Carn-Evil at Corbett’s, the haunt features black walls, fluorescent paint and 3D glasses to distort everything.

This attraction is recommended for mature audiences for good reasons, including graphic depictions of nudity.

Mind of a Killer

This haunt generated outrage when it was originally conceived as a Richard Trenton Chase-themed scare. Local families of his victims protested, and the Vampire of Sacramento idea was scrapped. That said, the scares, now generic, were still effective and the set was well-constructed. A solid traditional haunt.

Fright Planet CAL EXPO, GATE 9, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento ADMISSION: $19.95 TO $49.95, depending on level of access Fright Planet is Sacramento’s biggest haunted house, located at Cal Expo. It features eight attractions and rovers to keep frightseekers jumping.

Höbart’s Doll Factory

Dolls are creepy, and live dolls that follow you around and move in unnerving ways are downright scary.

Jatinga: the Forbidden Temple

Cannibal Cabin

A small cabin in the woods turns from idyllic to terrifying when residents turn cannibalistic. Lots of blood, guts and gore.

The Little House of Carnage

An absolutely disgusting diner, that definitely puts one off eating out. Bloodsoaked and gory, this one is high on the “gross” scale.

A voodoo-themed indoor haunt, with creepy swamp dwellers and human sacrifices. This attraction is more presentational than interactive but still effective.

This attraction is a very dark maze with occasional scares. More frustrating than frightening.

Red

This twisted circus-themed attraction is rated R. The haunt has the potential for disturbing adult situations, but things appeared relatively tame.

Distorted Maze

A zombie-filled maze with fog and strobe lighting keeps scare-seekers looking for a way out. Zombies who weren’t afraid to interact with patrons make the experience fresh.

Buried Alive the Ride

If you’re claustrophobic, don’t do it. Patrons climb into a coffin that simulates being driven to a dumpsite and buried alive. This one is not for the faint of heart.

Sacramento’s haunted locales

HALLOWEEN IS THE TIME to celebrate the things that, for lack of a better phrase, go bump in the night.

Homes will soon be dressed with plastic skeletons, rubber bats and other spooky decorations in pretense that they are haunted by specters from beyond the grave.

However, some places in Sacramento are thought to be haunted by supernatural or ghostly presences. With Halloween on the horizon, now might be a good time to hunt for ghosts at some of these rumored haunted places.

American River College Theatre, 4700 College Oak Drive, Sacramento The young Dr. Frankenstein follows in his grandfather’s footsteps and experiments with reanimation—but not without complications. http://web.arc.losrios.edu/~arcthtre/

Ghost Tours THURSDAYS THROUGH SUNDAYS, OCT. 10 – NOV. 2, VARIOUS SHOW TIMES

Sacramento Theatre Company Located at 1419 H St., the theater was originally formed in 1942 as the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre. It is believed to be one of the most haunted places in Sacramento with, supposedly, at least five different entities traveling through the halls.

According to costume shop manager Jessica Minnihan, the most famous ghost who haunts the theater manifests a pink orb nicknamed Pinky. Paranormal investigators have speculated Pinky to be the ghost of a former theater manager.

The other theater ghosts reported include a stagehand, two Hungarian lovers and an opera singer.

Underground Tunnels Old Sacramento’s underground tunnels have hour-long guided walking tours that begin at the Sacramento History Museum at 101 I St. before descending below the historic buildings.

According to the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation, the tunnels are at the original elevation of Old Sacramento.

The rising tides of the Sacramento River forced the townspeople rebuild on top of the original town.

These tunnels have been used as opium dens, brothels and passages used for smuggling merchandise and Chinese slaves. There have also been stories from business owners with access to the tunnels of a strange menacing energy and strange noises.

Old City Cemetery The oldest existing cemetery in Sacramento, established in 1849, is located at 1000 Broadway. According to its website, the cemetery offers guided evening lantern tours Oct. 24 and 25 for visitors to learn more about the various spirits haunting the grounds.

There have been reports of several ghosts on the grounds, according to website theshadowlands.net. These spirits include a little girl playing near the headstone of a deceased child and a pit bull who follows visitors around the cemetery, then disappears. There are no live animals

Young Frankenstein the Musical

Emily Foley // emmajfoley@gmail.com The city of Sacramento has a history of alleged haunted locations such as the Sacramento Theatre Company and the Delta King.

Delta King The Delta King is a riverboat that used to commute between Sacramento and San Francisco from 1927 to 1940. It was restored in 1984 and converted into a hotel, restaurant and theater located in Old Sacramento, 1000 Front St. Sightings have been reported of a giggling young girl on the deck bouncing a ball, according to ghost hunter Paul Dale Roberts. The ghost of the original captain has been rumored to sit in the theater balcony during performances, according to

The Central Library The Sacramento Room of the Central Library located on 828 I St. includes city and county histories and yearbooks. It recently hosted its fifth-annual “Haunted Stacks!” event where they screened the film “Young Frankenstein” and held an after-hours tour.

According to writer Karen Boruff, there have been multiple accounts from library staff who have seen an apparition that resembled a lady in red. There have also been instances of strange, unexplained noises, doors closing and books that vanish or are misplaced, then suddenly reappear after a few glances, according to Boruff.

The Vineyard House Located in the Gold Rush town of Coloma, the Vineyard House was built sometime in the late 1800s. It was used over the years as a jail, an inn, a restaurant and a winery.

According to the town records, one of the original owners, Robert Chalmers, went insane shortly after deaths of several of his children and the closing of his winery. He was chained up by his wife in the cellar and died there from starvation.

According to theshadowlands.net, there are stories of later residents being driven from the house by glowing apparitions and the sounds of rattling chains.

Woodland Opera House Located at 340 2nd St. in Woodland, Calif., the original Woodland Opera House was built in 1885. It was destroyed in an 1892 fire that devastated downtown Woodland. A new opera house was built on the original site and used the foundations and bricks that survived the fire, according to their website.

It was reopened 1896 and hosted various performances, including one by John Philip Sousa and his band.

Local legends say the ghost of a firefighter named William W. Porter haunts the north balcony. Porter died in the 1892 fire that claimed the original opera house.

According to the opera house Manager Cathy Oliver, though smoking is prohibited, audience members have complained of smelling cigars or some kind of burn-

Cary House Hotel Advertised as the “Jewel of Placerville,” the Historic Cary House Hotel is located at 300 Main St. in Placerville. It was built in 1847 by William Cary during the height of the California Gold Rush when the settlement was called Hangtown.

According to Placerville psychic Nancy Bradley, a horse and wagon operator named Arnold Wiedman lived in hotel Room 212 during the late 1800s, accompanied by his wife and baby.

Bradley said that Wiedman died in the room from influenza, and his wife and baby were forced to live there until her parents sent her money to travel home.

Bradley also mentioned various unexplained cold spots in the room.

California Automobile Museum, 2200 Front St., Sacramento Admission: adults $8. For every paying adult, two children get in free.

The California Automobile Museum hosts its annual “BOO-seum: Trunk or Treating & Haunted House.” The event will allow “Trunk or Treating” out of the trunks of rare and vintage classic cars, and employees will hand out candy and treats to children dressed in costumes. http://www.calautomuseum.org/event/ trunk-treat-2/

New Allied Health facilities on the horizon

Mohr Hall demolition set to begin in 2017; renovation of Lillard Hall may be delayed due to lack of funding Anthony Villarreal Staff Writer // avillarreal.express@gmail.com TWO CITY COLLEGE ALLIED Health and physics buildings constructed in 1963 are overdue for renovation, according to campus officials, who are optimistic that the $14.95 million rebuild of Mohr Hall and the $22.2 million renovation of Lillard Hall will begin by 2017.

City College Operations Director Greg Hayman said that although the budgets are already set for these projects, funding has not become fully available, possibly delaying the construction even longer.

Mohr Hall is scheduled to be demolished in 2017 and rebuilt by 2019, Hayman said. Lillard Hall is scheduled for renovation in 2019 but might be delayed because a state bond measure must be passed to fund the project.

The reason for demolishing Mohr Hall and renovating Lillard Hall comes down to cost-effectiveness, Hayman said.

“They’ve looked at the structural components of Lillard, and it’s a substantial brick building,” said Hayman. “It’s got some classic architecture, and it’s desirable. It’s only worthy of remodeling as opposed to tearing down.”

Allied Health Dean Jim Collins, who has been in his position for four years, said he has yet to see any renovations done to either building.

“It’s a bummer that we don’t have all the nice amenities that other schools do.”

The policy for renovation in the past was that “as little will be done for the buildings as possible,” said Collins, saying that the district decided that it was not practical to spend money on renovation of either building when both were slated for renovation or replacement.

Collins said that both buildings have many problems, including the cleanliness of the ventilation systems.

“We have a number of challenges — the sewage system is not that great, there [are] backups of the toilets periodically,

and we have leaks both in Lillard and in Mohr.”

Nursing student Lindsay Telso said at one point last year the ceilings in Mohr were leaking even when it wasn’t raining.

“The sim[ulation] labs are pathetic and definitely need to be improved,” added Telso.

Though Collins said he would like to see the renovations and rebuilding start as scheduled, money still has to be secured for the projects.

“We are looking for alternative funding,” Collins said. “There is no school bond on the ballot this election, and Governor Brown has taken a pretty conservative view about [new] bonds.”

According to Collins, the governor’s primary concerns statewide are the Cross Delta Tunnel and the Bullet Train, which “are taking precedence over these kinds of activities. And this is not only affecting Sac City and these two buildings, but a lot of other schools as well.”

Even with the new Mohr Hall, which is to be named Mohr Hall II, and the renovation of Lillard Hall, Collins said he is still concerned about the new space and layout of the buildings.

“There’s a limitation on what could be done, so [the buildings are] going to be torn down, but the outer walls are all going to stay the same, so the footprint of the building cannot change, which is unfortunate because we can really use more space,” Collins said.

Currently, both buildings have a lot of wasted space, according to Collins, specifically the stadium-style seating in lecture spaces like Lillard Hall, which are not conducive to modern styles of learning.

Telso said that at the beginning of the fall semester, she saw students and a teacher outdoors.

“There was a class sitting outside,” she said.

Enough classroom space is also an issue, Collins said, adding that more space

would allow for a better learning environment.

“Reconfiguring that space is not just a matter of convenience, but really a matter of how do we serve students better,” Collins said.

Collins believes that students’ and faculty members’ voices should play a part in the new building designs.

“Everybody should be involved, Jim Collins, including DEAN OF ALLIED HEALTH students,” he said. “The college is very good about getting the voice of the students, administrators and staff.”

While the Mohr building undergoes demolition and rebuilding, nursing and medical students will occupy temporary buildings on the east end of campus, Hayman said.

Collins’ main concern is that the temporary buildings will not be suitable for all classrooms and labs. Because the temporary buildings won’t be able to house a lot of the medical equipment in Mohr Hall, some buildings may be leased off campus for students.

“I think faculty have done a really good job making do with the building limitations. The students certainly are very flexible, so I really appreciate that a lot.”

“It’s a difficult problem,” Collins said.

“We’re the biggest division in the college.

We have five Allied Health programs, we have three science programs, and all of them have equipment. Some of the materials are hazardous, so they need special ventilation.”

Collins said that it can be difficult for students and administrators in such a big program to work with limited space and older equipment, but he is happy with the way they have handled it.

“I think faculty have done a really good job making do with the building limitations,” said Collins “The students certainly are very flexible, so I really appreciate that a lot.”

Nursing students who currently take classes in Mohr Hall had mixed emotions about the building being demolished.

Telso said she is extremely appreciative of the buildings and the nursing program at Sacramento City, though she added, “It’s a bummer that we don’t have all the nice amenities that other schools do.”

Nursing student Cozette Koenig has a message for future students who will occupy the renovated buildings.

“Appreciate it and take care of it because the resources don’t come easily,” said Koenig. “You should protect it like your baby.” 

City College hosts domestic violence workshop Resources and survivor stories will be featured at CAC Event Sierra Popp Staff Writer // sierrapoppxpress@gmail.com AS PART OF THE National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the City College Cultural Awareness Center will host a workshop on the subject Friday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop’s goal is to explore the pain of abuse and to provide resources in the community to help victims survive, cope, heal and grow, according to Tamara Knox of the Cultural Awareness Center.

The workshop will create an environment to discuss healthy relationships for both men and women who may have experienced domestic violence or may experience it in the future, Knox said.

At the event survivors will share their personal stories of domestic violence and the impact it has had on their lives, Knox said.

My Sister’s House, a Sacramento resource for

abused women and children, will also participate in the workshop. My Sister’s House is a non-profit organization that addresses and identifies the needs of children and women involved in domestic violence in the Asian and Pacific Islander community.

Patricia Sokolawski of My Sister’s House and a survivor of domestic violence herself will tell her story at this event.

City College Psychology Professor Gayle Pitman will present numbers and data related to domestic violence.

Volunteers from ManAlive, a program that helps male abusers to become rehabilitated and teach others peaceful ways, will be present at the workshop.

Knox said that campus police officers will also be present at this event to provide information as well as support. Information on restraining orders and legal support will also be available.

Information on the impact domestic violence has on children will be presented as well.

There will be community resource tables and help for victims trying to leave an abusive relationship. All workshop activities will be held in the Student Center and in the Cultural Awareness Center.

“It’s embarrassing, so a lot of people don’t want to come forward, but because of the Ray Rice situation and other news, we thought we needed to visit this topic again,” said Knox.

A code of mis-conduct

Some athletes bring negative attention to themselves with their misconduct — but not at City College Justin Valdez Sports Editor // justinvaldezexpress@gmail.com BALTIMORE RAVENS’ RUNNING BACK Ray Rice and Minnesota Vikings’ running back Adrian Peterson are just two high-profile athletes who have been in trouble this year for violations of the NFL’s code of conduct.

Though athletes’ off-the-field conduct is an issue in the media, City College coaches said they haven’t really had to deal with student athletes violating the school’s code of conduct policies.

“Generally the only things I’ve had to deal with is athletes not listening to coaches. When that happens, we just like to give them ‘positive reminders’ — extra workouts — to get them back in line,” said head wrestling Coach Dave Pacheco.

A code of conduct is a set of rules and responsibilities put in place for individuals at a particular organization. Sacramento City College has its own Student Standard of Conduct as well as a Student Athlete Standards of Conduct.

“Every year, every student athlete in order to be eligible to participate has to attend an eligibility meeting,” said Mitch Campbell, City College athletic director and dean of kinesiology. “We cover what it means to be a student athlete at City College and our student athletes’ standards of conduct document.”

The Sacramento City College Student Athlete Standards of Conduct does not mention anything about off-campus rules or regulations. The focus is alcohol and tobacco usage, use or distribution of

illegal substances, and how the student athlete should demonstrate proper citizenship and sportsmanship.

There is a Felony Sentence Disclosure that coincides with the Standards of Conduct document. It states that if student athletes have been convicted of certain felonies, they may be ineligible to participate in sports programs.

Some coaches on campus have their own sets of rules and guidelines their student athletes must follow along with the college’s policies.

“I personally have my own code of conduct in our team book,” said City College Volleyball Head Coach Laurie Nash.

Nash takes a team-comes-first mentality and encourages her student athletes to not let substances take them away from what they love doing the most — volleyball.

“I always stress not to forget who you are and who you represent. No one person is bigger than the team,” said Nash.

Athletes violating the codes of conduct, from the pro level down to the collegiate level, have been a major issue in the media this year. It has become such a mainstream issue that on the Oct. 4 episode of the NBC show, “Saturday Night Live,” known for parodies of current major issues in the media, a skit depicted the comedians as NFL players. Instead of announcing what college they were from, they announced what major crimes they had committed.

Pacheco says he believes the media spotlights too much of the negative stories.

“When you turn on the news or read

a newspaper, it’s so negative,” he said.

“You don’t hear about those athletes that are out there doing good. You just mainly hear about the few that are bad. Most student athletes and athletes in general are good people.”

In February, video footage surfaced of Rice dragging his then-fiancé’s unconscious body out of an Atlantic City hotel elevator. Since then it has been athlete after athlete in trouble for breaking a code of conduct in some form or another.

Recently University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley was suspended indefinitely for allegedly violating NCAA rules. According to ESPN, Gurley autographed memorabilia to be sold for a $12,000 profit.

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is also facing his share of allegations. According to a USA Today article

by Sean Rossman, Winston is facing four student conduct code violations. These stem from Winston’s December 2012 sexual conduct violations.

Winston is facing multiple violations for other issues, but he was suspended by the team for a game for only one incident.

According to City College football Head Coach Dannie Walker, that is the problem.

“They’re taking too long to react and discipline these athletes. It isn’t until they start getting pressure from outside sources that they take action,” said Walker. 

IN THEIR MOST RECENT home match the City College Panthers wrestling team defeated Sierra College 28-12 Wednesday, Oct. 15. Their conference record is now 4-1 after going 3-1 at the North Duals in Santa Rosa Saturday, Oct. 18.

According to Pacheco, Jorge is on his way to being able to compete at an equal level with his teammates but has some more time to go before he gets there.

“He’s getting better, but he’s still got a ways to go,” said Pacheco. “There’s no substitute for experience, and he’s getting experience on the fly right now, trying to learn everything he needs to learn. But if you watched him in his drilling, you would never know he’d never wrestled before.”

According to Pacheco, Albert was an Academic All-American as well as an All-American in wrestling in 2013. Albert said that he’s not sure he wants to wrestle at the four-year college level, but he does want transfer to a university and get an education to help his future career.

“I’m going to transfer to whatever school, because I definitely want the education,” said Albert. “I want to have a career in fitness or personal training, but I’m still kind of undecided on what I want to do.”

Separated by three years, the brothers had never competed on the same field, let alone the same mat. While the two of them were into football and baseball when they were younger, they took different paths when it came to fighting.

While Jorge began to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Albert began getting more and more into wrestling.

According to both brothers, now that they are wrestling on the same team, they use each other as motivation to improve and succeed.

“It becomes a lot more of a supportive type of thing,” said Albert. “Say I’m feeling down at a tournament because I lost a match. Instead of looking at the worst side of it, I think, ‘Jorge is still on the mat, too.’”

With the 2014 season just beginning, Jorge and Albert have different goals. Since it is his first season competing, Jorge said that his goal is to come out of the season with a winning record. Albert, a seasoned veteran, said he has bigger aspirations for himself this season: taking first place in the state championship.

The Landeros brothers will be able to push each other to achieve their goals on the mat this season, and according to Jorge, it will be added motivation that they’re in each other’s corner.

“It’s a good little bump having blood in the room with you,” said Jorge. “All these guys are my friends and stuff, but having your actual brother in there with you is pretty cool.” 
