TIPS

Take the time to talk with vendors

Don’t be shy! Vendors are there to talk to you! What better way to get a feel for how well they might be able to work with you? You can’t get that from a visit to their website. Even if you don’t end up hiring them, you just might pick up some great ideas that you haven’t thought of. Plus, many vendors offer show specials that will save you money.

for getting the most from a bridal show

Register for everything

Bring pre-printed labels with your name, address, email, phone number and wedding date

Use sheets of labels from the office supply store that you print yourself. Even regular mailing address labels with your name and address are better than nothing. Having labels or a stamp eliminates the need to write this information every time you register with a vendor to win prizes or to receive information. Especially useful for those whose handwriting is "challenging"!

Create an email account specifically for wedding related communication Give this email to show vendors instead of your regular email address, then just close it when it’s no longer needed.

Bring a friend

Sure, you’ll get put on lots of mailing lists. But you’ll get lots of discount offers and specials and one (or more) just might come in handy! Plus, lots of exhibitors will have a giveaway. Someone’s going to win it, maybe you! You can’t win if you don’t sign up.

A photo is worth...

Dresses, table settings and decor, flowers, accessories...get photos of anything that catches your eye. You can refer to them later when you are deciding on the details.

Attend at least one fashion show

The bigger shows often feature a fashion show, and the fashion shows are often the highlight of the day. It may be the only time you and your companion will have an opportunity to sit down! When you see a gown you like, be sure to make a note on the program so you can remember which vendor to go back and visit before leaving the show.

Things slow down toward the end

Your mother, your maid of honor, a bridesmaid or, best of all, your fiancé. It’s to your advantage to include him in as much as possible from the beginning. He’s also perfect for carrying the big load of information and samples you’ll be gathering!

Grab a bag

As soon as possible, find a vendor who provides them. You’ll need one to carry goodies.

Find Sacramento Bride and Groom

Typically, the crowds thin out in the last hour or two of most shows, especially at the smaller ones. Getting through the aisles is easier (a consideration if you bring a large group, need to deal with a stroller or have a harder time getting around), exhibitors will have more time to spend talking with you and the overall feel is a bit more relaxed. But beware - we’ve seen instances when sparsely attended shows have shut down early, disappointing latecomers. So don't wait too long!

Let’s Get COORDINATED THE WEDDING PLANNER HE ASKED, AND YOU SAID YES! YOU’RE SO EXCITED! THEN IT HITS

you: you need to plan and host a fabulous party where nothing can go wrong, find the right location and arrange services from businesses you’ve never dealt with, and keep it within your budget! You may have an idea of how you want it to be; you reflect on weddings you’ve attended in the past and what was good and not so good. You pick up a few magazines, attend a bridal show or two, maybe create a Pinterest board with an assortment of cute photos that you collected from here and there (maybe even too many!). You think you’re getting it all figured out. And, then suddenly the wedding is a couple of months away and all of those plans aren’t quite coming together as you hoped. Reality sets in, and the “dream wedding” becomes the wedding of what’s possible to get done. Wouldn’t it have been great if you had some help?

PHOTOS BY BUCHELI PHOTOGRAPHY

selecting your wedding party Some couples find that after they’ve finished counting sisters, best friends and favorite cousins, they have enough people in their wedding party to cast a Hollywood megamovie. When deciding on the people you want to include in your wedding, use discretion. Your first consideration should be budget — the more attendants you have, the greater your expenses. Choose family members and close friends who are special to you and for whom participation in the wedding will not be a financial burden. The maid-of-honor and best man have many duties, so make sure they are responsible and organized.

One way to turn your vision and all those wonderful ideas that you have in your mind into reality is to enlist the aid of a Wedding Planner. A good wedding planner has the knowledge, experience, creativity and local business connections to make your dream day happen while saving you time, money and stress.

Hiring a Planner

Take your time finding the right fit for your personality and vision. This is the person you will be working with, talking to, e-mailing and even venting to for the next several months or more, so even if they meet all your criteria but you just aren’t “feeling it”, don’t be afraid to keep looking. You want to make sure you find someone who is not only capable but you feel comfortable with in such an important role leading up to and even on the day of your wedding. An experienced planner will have connections in the wedding industry. Between their work

22

l SACBRIDE.COM l

experience and their participation in local professional organizations, they know not only which vendors are reputable, but also which are the best suited for your style and budget. Many planners will save you more money than the fee they charge, just by steering you in the right direction with your many choices from venue to vendors. Planners also know to look for ’hidden fees’ such as service charges and taxes which can add significantly to basic fees. If you book a planner, you will avoid situations like this because the planner will be taking care of your budget for you. Additionally, planners know how to get the right deals/packages for you and can find creative ways to work with vendors to lower costs and still satisfy the couple. Although many venues have an on site coordinator available, their duties generally are limited to what is strictly related to the venue. Another reason to have a planner there to manage the event.

WINTER • SPRING 2017

Levels of Service

FULL SERVICE. The planner is brought in at the very beginning, helping you create a plan, timeline and a budget. Your planner will help you to see how to take your ideas to completion. On the day of the wedding, a good planner takes charge when necessary, and operates behind the scenes when called for, handling problems and people. They see you through the entire process. PARTIAL SERVICE. This generally is a scaled down version of full service. It may only focus on event design, the timeline and filling in some gaps. Generally includes day of coordination. DAY OF SERVICE. Finally, if you are organized and have it all under control but you want to have the freedom to enjoy your wedding day, you many want to hire a “day of” coordinator. Often referred to “Month of Service”, this package includes more than just the day of to ensure that everything runs smoothly. c

Modern Luxe This spectacular wedding style was accomplished by mixing modern elements with shimmering gold and crystal accents. Contrasting black and white stripes are seen all throughout the room from the cake, guest tables, and the S-shaped buffet table. Sparkling crystal drips from the chandelier over the sweetheart table and buffet table candelabras. The sweetheart table was the focal point of the room featuring a shimmering gold cake stand, table cloth, and backdrop which luxuriously completed the look. December Elegance Vizcaya was the perfect location for Titus and Suzanne’s elegant December wedding. Rain forced us to move the ceremony inside, but that hardly dampened their spirits! The ballroom was decorated in shades of pale pink, champagne, blush, and cream, with touches of black and gold. Guests especially loved the amazing dessert buffet and were completely blown away during the first dance when the DJ actually made it snow in the ballroom! Enchanting Evening Following a beautiful church service, Rachel and Andrew opted for live entertainment at their reception in lieu of dancing. Jugglers, acrobats, stilt walkers, a living statue and selfie booth enthralled the guests. With the backdrop of Grand Island Mansion, it was like stepping back in time for this fancy affair which featured princess touches. Twisted branch and magnolia centerpieces adorned guest tables. Rustic Chic This real-life wedding was truly out of a dream! By using gorgeous surroundings we created a rustic-chic setting by mixing gold tones against earthy-wooden elements. Guests sat at a mix of wooden vineyard chairs and tufted linen chairs along sprawling farm tables adorned with layered lace runners, bright florals, candles and gold beaded chargers. Reclaimed wooden planks hung from the industrial beams with rope and were draped with lush greens and flowers, a very popular trend for 2017. What’s a GROOM to do? TRADITIONAL TO MODERN HOW INVOLVED SHOULD YOU, THE GROOM, BE IN THE PLANNING

of your wedding? The answer to that question is as different as every couple. Of course, there are customs to be guided by, but these days, it’s not unusual for grooms to become more involved in the wedding planning than was once expected. And what busy modern bride can’t use a little help?

28

l SACBRIDE.COM l

WINTER • SPRING 2017

t h e g ro o m

Planning as a Team

Planning a wedding can be big project and the possibilities are nearly endless, so your involvement will most likely be welcomed by your bride. She has probably given her wedding dreams considerably more thought over the years than you have, and already has ideas and expectations. Modern couples are treating the wedding planning as a team effort, dividing tasks and making decisions together. This can be an opportunity for you to work together on a project that can help you become closer, and create a dynamic that will continue in the future.

The Groom’s Touch

The benefit of being more involved in the planning process is that you get the opportunity to put your own personal stamp on your wedding day. This is your day too! These days, weddings are reflecting the grooms’ personalities with things like cigar and whiskey bars, signature cocktails, and making decisions about the menu or entertainment. It gives you a chance to make sure the guys have a good time too!

What to Wear

When it comes to wedding attire, grooms and groomsmen are finding that creative choices are more and more readily available. From formal to casual, there is a vast assortment to choose from in mens’ attire with options to coordinate with her bridesmaids’ dresses. Some grooms opt for a suit instead of a tuxedo. If you don’t own a good suit, perhaps this is the time to add that to your wardrobe.

Transportation

Why not go all out and travel to and from your wedding celebration in style? When you book your transportation, be specific about the color, style and size of vehicle you want. Be very clear about the number of passengers you want to transport; the number of stops you want to make going to and from the ceremony; the on-board services you want during the ride; and the amount of luggage you expect to carry with you.

Planning the Honeymoon

Start with the season, your budget, and a general idea of your ideal escape. What kind of weather, outings, and accommodations would you both enjoy. Seclusion and relaxation or sightseeing and adventure? Talking with a travel agent may help you discover new places that you hadn’t considered that fit both of your dreams! Working with a travel agent can really reduce stress and help ensure your trip goes smoothly. And most travel agents don’t charge a fee, so you don’t have to worry about cost increases for the extra help. Simply give your agent an idea of your budget, where you’d like to go, and let him or her do the rest of the work! Regardless of how you plan, you’ll want to purchase your travel tickets and reserve your accommodations several months in advance. Confirm your reservations one month out from the wedding and print all of your travel documents one week prior. Going wireless? With access to online document servers you can be connected anywhere and have access to your travel documents. As a bonus, it can be easily shared with your emergency contact back home. If your travel will take you out of the United States, make sure travel documents are up to date and copies are made for an emergency. You’ll also want to have the contact information for the local US Embassy with you at all times.

The Bachelor Party

Of course, no discussion of the role of the groom is complete without mentioning the bachelor party. Yes, the standard bachelor party remains a staple, but consider alternatives to the stereotypical debauchery – camping or fishing trips, skiing or snowboarding, or golf. Maybe an outof-town sports event that will give you and your friends a chance to get away together.

The Rehearsal Dinner

Traditionally, the groom’s family is responsible for arranging and paying for the rehearsal dinner. It’s the time everyone gets to relax and connect prior to the main event. See Rehearsal Dinner 101 on page ?? for tips on planning.

Say Thank You

andrea fong photography

It’s customary to give your groomsmen gifts to show your appreciation for their participation and their friendship, and they will appreciate a gift that can actually be used. If you run out of ideas, there’s always the fancy guy stuff that nobody ever buys for themselves: engraved flasks or shot glasses, cigars, money clips and such. The gifts do not have to all be the same, each can be chosen for the individual recipient.

Getting your

MARRIAGE LICENSE

requirements

Underlying the upcoming wedding is a practical matter — getting a marriage license. The engaged couple must appear together to get the license. Issued by the County Clerk-Recorder’s Office, the marriage license is valid in all counties in California (unless it is a “confidential” license), and no health certificate is required.

appointments

Although it is not required, most licensing offices recommend that you schedule an appointment to avoid a long wait.

BUCHELI PHOTOGRAPHY

expiration

The license is valid for 90 days, and there is no waiting period before you can get married.

The current fee for a public marriage license runs anywhere from $50 to $82 for a public license. A confidential license, which must be used in the county in which it is purchased and is not a part of the public records, is slightly higher.

age

The minimum age requirement for obtaining a marriage license in California is 18. If one person, or both, is under 18, he or she must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. The underaged person also must have an order from a Superior Court judge and counseling through Family Court Services. For marriage permission services in Sacramento County, call 8745633.

Selecting Your GOWN FINDING YOUR STYLE WITH SO MANY STYLES, FABRICS, AND OPTIONS FROM WHICH

to choose, it’s important to establish your style. Since most full service bridal salons have an experienced consultant who will bring you gowns to try on, it’s important that you be able to clearly communicate your vision up front. Look for styles you like in magazines and online to bring with you. Ball gown, A-line, mermaid or trumpet, and slim fit are the most common choices. Necklines include strapless, sweetheart, v-neck and illusion caps and sleeves. You can often quickly determine that a certain hem or neckline will not flatter or work with your body. Don’t be afraid to try styles outside of the ordinary! Dresses in colors such as gold, blush, or silver have been showing up in fashion-forward salons. Even shorter, cocktail-style gowns are making a splash for brides who favor a modern or flirty style or dresses that convert from long to short for the reception.

bridal gowns ALL ABOUT VEILS

ACCESSORIES GOING UNDERCOVER

SHOES, SHOES, SHOES

A bra that fits properly, and is comfortable, is of the utmost importance. To ensure the bra will work with your chosen style, don’t purchase it until after you’ve selected your gown. The decision on what bra to buy should be based on three things: the design of the gown, the body contours of the bride, and comfort. The neckline of your bra is also important. For gowns with open, low-cut necklines, experts recommend a low-cut, half-cut, or push-up bra to enhance natural cleavage. Some brides prefer to have cups sewn into the bodice of their gowns to eliminate the need for a bra altogether. If a bride needs a little additional fullness, roundness, or symmetry in her bust, experts suggest using one of a variety of cups to achieve the desired look.

Comfort should be your first consideration in choice of shoes for your wedding day. Consider what you’ll be doing all day—how much standing, walking, dancing—before you fall in love with a pair of backless, three-inch spike heels. Most brides opt for comfort above all else, but here are those “fashion first” gals who go for “the look” without regard to comfort. The current trends are slingbacks, peep toes, sparkles and color! Instead of the traditional white or ivory we are seeing a lot of hot pink, deep emerald and bright blues. Another popular trend is the flip-flop for changing into at the reception. Some brides even keep extra pairs for guests. They can be “blingedup” for extra splash.

LENGTH – Wedding veils can be as short as 18 inches (shoulder length), or over 108 inches (cathedral length). SHAPE – The standard cut for a veil is an oval or semi-circle cut. Scallop, bubble and waterfall shapes are also popular. EDGING – Many veils are not hemmed – the edges of the veil appear to simply fade away. Pencil hems offer a small and delicate stitched border. Ribbon edging is a classic look. Lace hems are a formal and dressy look. BLUSHER – A blusher is the short piece of the veil that traditionally covers the bride’s face as she walks down the aisle. TIAR AS – If you want to wear a tiara along with your veil, be sure to choose a style that will accommodate one. Tiaras can often help keep the headpiece in place, just be sure it’s a comfortable weight on your head and neck. Also, consider your tiara and veil to be a complete look. Don’t choose a veil with accents that compete or clash with your tiara. Likewise, don’t choose a flashy tiara that overwhelms your dramatic veil.

Always Elegant It can be tempting to bring an entourage with you to the salon but Bree Gianassi Little, owner of Always Elegant Bridal, advises brides to select one to four key people to attend. Too many shoppers can be overwhelming and brides can be pressured into selecting a style that pleases their family and friends instead of themselves, she says. Typically a bride will shop with her mother, maid of honor, and perhaps another family member. Consider your relationship with the people you select; if you and your sister always disagree and argue, it’s best to bring her to the salon after you’ve made your final choice. You want your shopping to be peaceful and pleasant, not stressful. Once at your appointment, you’ll first go over your vision and budget and then try on gowns that fit your ideas. Even if you have your heart set on a particular style, try on a few styles outside of your ideal – you may be surprised to find that strapless ball gown you’d always hoped for pales in comparison to a sleek and sophisticated trumpet skirt.

Dreamnette Bridal For the bride who wants a gown like no other, Dreamnette Bridal is a must-stop shop. Owner Jeanette Miller brings over 12 years of experience of working with wedding gowns – including extensive time owning her own bridal salon in Sweden – to Sacramento brides. “No bride wants to look like every other girl on her wedding day,” says Jeanette. “So I carry a lot of very unique, beautiful gowns…lines that aren’t available anywhere else in the area.” In fact, about three of Dreamnette’s bridal lines are exclusive to the salon. But rest assured, you can also find selections from some of the most popular gown makers, such as Venus Bridals and Eden Bridals. No matter the designer, Jeanette works hard to assure that every gown sold in her shop is of the highest quality. She prides herself on selecting high-end, top quality gowns, without the high price tag. By selecting gowns that offer good structure (such as nice corsets and quality boning) and fine fabrics, Jeanette is able to offer her brides a stunning, high-end gown, at an amazingly affordable price. And at Dreamnette, every bride gets a personal touch. One-on-one attention is key and the staff works to make sure that each bride finds the dress of her dreams. And with a newer location opening in spring of 2012, Dreamnette now offers a more modern, spacious and comfortable environment to select the perfect gown for your big day.

The only boutique of its kind on the west coast, Sparkle Bridal Couture specializes in bridal gowns sizes 14-30, with all the accessories to match. “We saw a need for fashion-forward, stylish gowns for fuller figured brides,” says Sandra Gonzalez, Founder and Creative Director. “There aren’t a lot of resources for curvy brides…we’ve heard horror stories of brides being told to have a friend try a dress on for them or just hold the hanger over their neck to get an idea of how it will look. That’s no way to shop for your wedding gown. Every bride deserves to have that special experience and find a gown that makes her look and feel amazing.” That’s why Sparkle maintains a selection of over 150 gowns in plus sizes, so every bride can try before she buys. And you won’t find dowdy or boring designs here. At Sparkle Bridal Couture, the philosophy is that every bride deserves to sparkle on her wedding day. So each dress is hand selected for fabric quality, construction, and cut to flatter and enhance your natural curves – from sleek and sophisticated to fashion forward to traditional ball gowns. One of the bridal season’s next trends are new designs of satin gowns. Satin has long been a symbol of regal elegance. Today’s satin is luxurious, soft to the touch and the perfect complement to elaborate sparkle and crystal beading. Amy is wearing SPARKLE bridal couture’s luxe satin gown with a bust line of crystal embellishment to accentuate a bride’s neckline. Pleating at the bustline creates a sophisticated look. The skirt is a narrow A-line with a sweep across the front. A delicate side-to-side drape is met with a floral swirled pattern of clear and sliver seed beads and crystals. When searching for a satin gown here is SPARKLE’s number one tip: Make sure the satin used is of excellent quality so it provides your curves structure and your gown looks more expensive than it actually costs.

SPARKLE’s separates collection is a favorite among brides as it lets each bride create her own individual look. Amanda is wearing SPARKLE’s lace off-theshoulder top with multilayered tulle skirt. The fitted blouse is covered in delicate chantilly lace with a crossover pleated design to create a cinched waist. It’s paired with a full ballgown of asymmetrically cut tulle layers. A center beaded belt is added to tie this loo together. For added fantasy, sparkle tulle is an option to add into the blouse and/ or throughout the skirt. With 5 blouses, various skirts and sparkle optional, hundreds of combinations can be designed and each SPARKLE bride can create her own gown for her special day.

Finding the Dress for the Second Wedding TASTEFUL OPTIONS FOR WHAT TO WEAR BY DEBBIE O’HEARN, PERSONAL WEDDING STYLIST

FIRST LOVE…SECOND LOVE…YOUNG LOVE…OLDER LOVE…PLANNING A MARRIAGE IS THRILLING. However, planning for the wedding can be stressful. Whether the wedding will be large and complex or small and simple, questions you can count on the bride asking herself are, “What should I wear?” “ What should my mother wear?” “What should my grandmother wear?” That’s where Debbie O’Hearn Personal Styling comes in! I enjoy helping members of the bridal party and family members select wedding attire to reflect their style and complement the wedding plans. So who am I? When you meet me, you’ll notice quickly that I love Fashion! In fact, I love everything that has to do with fashion! My passion for being a personal stylist started years ago when women contacted me asking for direction and suggestions about ways to update their personal style. I have enjoyed watching these dynamic and fearless leaders learn how important it is to look their best. Their self-confidence has soared. Over the years I have come to understand that it is not about how much you spend on your wardrobe, but rather how you put pieces together to create stunning outfits—looks that help your personality come alive. I style for business, pleasure, travel, TV appearances, professional photos, special events, rodeos, cocktail and holiday parties, date nights, and weddings! While styling weddings, I am often asked to help mothers/grandmothers of the bride/groom find their wedding attire. Sometimes these important women in the bridal group do not have time or patience to look for their very own dresses because they are focused on the bride, wedding location,

and party afterwards. Lately, a new kind of bride is asking for my guidance-women who have decided to marry later on in life, or are preparing for their second marriage. With the excitement of this new chapter in their lives, these women are having a difficult time with decisions about what type of gown to wear--the classic white wedding gown? An off-white cream-colored dress? Long or short? Veil or no veil? Maybe a color such as out-of-the-box coral? What are the rules? Are there any rules? These are good questions. The answers depend on several considerations—your theme, venue, time of year, time of day, as well as whether or not you lead towards a traditional or nontraditional event. Importantly, it also depends on your personal style! On the next page, you will find four different examples of updated, classic (yet fun!) dresses for your perfect wedding day. Take a look…and if you find you need some assistance in planning for your wedding, please reach out.

THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY

BRIDAL SHOWER

BACHELOR / BACHELORETTE

Traditionally engagement parties have been hosted by the bride’s family. It’s a nice social gathering meant to share the good news with close friends and family.

Who hasn’t attended a bridal shower in their lifetime? Originally intended to “shower” a new couple with household goods, this tradition has carried through to modern brides.

Once called a stag party, this tradition has been around for centuries. The groom’s last chance to say farewell to bachelorhood.

Modern day couples though can really set their own rules about who hosts. This is a gift-free event, and couples should make it clear none are expected.

This party is generally hosted by the matron of honor, though often family will contribute as well. Plan something that really suits the bride’s interests and personality.

Be creative when throwing your party, and make it unique to you as a couple. Whether it’s a swanky cocktail hour, or meeting up at your favorite brewery, it’s all about sharing the good news.

For modern couples, they may want to consider a Jack & Jill shower. Guys are joining in on the fun, and you can invite couples and your male family members as well to attend.

Ladies, not to be left out, are also getting together for some fun. Rehearsal Dinner

101

Hey grooms - just when you thought it was safe to stop planning, your bride-to-be asks about your ideas for the rehearsal dinner. Relax! Traditionally hosted by the groom and his family, the rehearsal dinner is your chance to shine.

The Basics

Your rehearsal dinner will serve many important purposes, no matter its location or level of formality. First and foremost, the rehearsal is a chance to run-through your ceremony, delegate any wedding responsibilities to family, and quell any last minute nerves. Second, in the event that your family and friends are not already well acquainted, the rehearsal dinner serves as an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another. Lastly, as a smaller and more intimate celebration of your upcoming nuptials, the rehearsal dinner is often a time to share sentiments that can be forgotten in the hustle and bustle of wedding day. Typically, the dinner is held the night before the wedding and immediately following the ceremony rehearsal. Since your guests will be arriving from your ceremony location, it’s helpful to select a nearby location. There aren’t any rules on how long the celebration should last, but it’s a good idea to keep it an early evening if your bridal party must be up first thing the next day (this is especially important

for your beautiful bride-to-be). Or, if you have your heart set on an all-night party, you might consider hosting the rehearsal dinner two nights prior to your wedding. Just be considerate of your attendants’ time; holding the rehearsal too far from the wedding date or too early in the day could require extra travel time and costs. The groom’s family customarily hosts and pays for the rehearsal dinner; however, you and your bride may decide to host it yourselves – particularly if both families are sharing the cost of the wedding. The host is responsible for providing food and drink for the rehearsal guests. If your budget is tight, use creativity to spread your dollars. Consider a cocktail and appetizer party, a casual picnic, a family potluck at your parent’s home, or a simple pizza and pasta affair. Just remember — your rehearsal dinner doesn’t have to be fancy to be fun!

Who Attends?

At the very least, your wedding party, immediate family members (such as your parents and siblings) and their dates should be invited.

Many couples also invite extended family members and close family friends. If you have guests that are traveling from out of town, it is considered polite to include them at the dinner, but etiquette doesn’t necessarily demand it.

Saying Thanks

The rehearsal dinner is the perfect occasion to show your appreciation for your family, friends, and wedding party. Bridesmaid and groomsman gifts are often given out at this time, as are any presents for your parents. It’s also customary for the bride and groom to offer a few words of thanks to their friends and family, and to one another. Grooms: Make your soon-to-be-wife’s heart melt by including her in your remarks! Not sure what to say? Share a favorite memory or list what you’re looking forward to most about your new life together. As for toasts, it’s traditional for the father of the groom to offer a toast. Because the dinner is often more casual than the wedding, you might want to allow additional toasts from guests who may not have the chance to speak at the Big Day. c

the inspiration

Craft brew is exploding in Sacramento, and we at the magazine are excited to see it making its way into weddings. After brewing a special batch of beer just for the pre-wedding parties and reception, we had some fun setting up a craft brew inspired engagement dinner party. Hops were used as a garland and cuttings graced each place setting. Note: these are only available in August/September during harvest season. We had fun with painting beer bottles for florals, plus making a custom six-pack holder to send home with a lucky guest.

All About CATERING SELECTING THE RIGHT FOOD, DRINK & DESSERT WHAT IS THE LATEST IN WEDDING FOOD TRENDS? The good news is, the current trend seems to be anything goes! Couples are getting creative in their efforts to provide their guests with a meal to remember. Of course, buffets and sit down dinners remain a staple, but there are other options. Instead of the usual chicken or pasta offerings, consider serving comfort food, homestyle cooking, or ethnic foods. And it may be necessary to check with your caterer for ways to accomodate those with special dietary needs and preferences. Late night snacks are a growing trend with fun mini meals for party goers like sliders and fries, mini sandwiches and homemade chips. Be creative! Add a little flair without spending a lot by offering a mashed potato bar with all the fixings served in martini glasses. Food trucks are a great solution for the late-night party crowd.

food, drink & desser t your union, and a celebratory final touch to your wedding meal. How do you make sure your cake will be as delicious and beautiful as you’ve always dreamed? Start with shape, flavor, and design. Wedding cakes come in a variety of shapes, the most common of which is round. This traditional look compliments an event of any style or formality and can be adorned with almost any decoration. For a more modern or sophisticated look, try square or hexagonal tiers. These sleek shapes don’t need a lot of decoration to shine and work well with minimalist looks.

Venue Catering

Your venue may offer catering, and many venues will only allow their own food service. They generally have several options for food, from plated selections to buffet. Dietary restrictions can also be accommodated, such as gluten-free or vegan. It is recommended that you meet with the caterer in advance and taste their food. Ask the venue event planner to give you a run down of the options and the cost, including service charges and tax.

Outside Catering

If your venue does not have food available, you may need to hire an outside caterer. Your other vendors can be an asset in the search for a caterer. Wedding shows are another good way to see what caterers offer because they usually offer samples to attendees. Their websites will give you an idea of their style, menu selections and capabilities. Select a few to interview and set up tasting appointments to meet in person and sample their food. At your first meeting, don't forget to ask about credentials, licenses, and insurance. Catering can be one of your largest wedding expenses, so don't be afraid to discuss your budget right away. Let your caterer offer choices that will help you meet your budget while still fulfilling your desires. Full service catering includes bringing the food to your location, providing servers to set up the food, serve it and clean up. Some questions you may want to ask: What facilities will the caterer need at the location (electricity, kitchen, water, etc.)? Will they bring servers and what will the servers do? Set up, serve, clean up?

72

l SACBRIDE.COM l

Will the servers uncork your champagne and serve it? Will they cut your cake and serve it? Will they take away their garbage? Will they set the tables? Will there be salt and pepper at the tables? Will they provide linens and dishes? Will they serve coffee and provide cream and sugar? If they don't provide linens, dishes etc., you will need to add those to your rentals. What is the total amount that will be charged, including service charge, gratuity and tax. These extra costs need to be included in your budgeting to avoid an unpleasant surprise later. Does your caterer have liability insurance? Most venues will require it. Make sure to know your deadline to report the number of guests. Will you be able to change that number? By what date? Drop and Go catering includes delivery of the food to your location. This option can be great for those who are working with a limited budget. Some questions you may want to ask: Will they set up the buffet? Will they dress the salad? Do they provide disposable plates and cutlery? If you do not want to use disposables, you will need to add dishes and tableware to your rentals. After you have chosen your caterer, make sure that everything you have agreed upon is spelled out in a contract. This is for your protection.

Want to do something different for your desserts? Being hot and dry during the summers here in the Sacramento area, maybe you should consider something cool and refreshing. Rich’s Ice Cream Catering has been serving fun and memorable ice cream socials all over Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area for weddings and other special events. Their attractively uniformed, professional staff can handle the largest of events (10,000 servings in as little as little as an hour) to casual, intimate wedding receptions and parties. You will love the smell of fresh made-on-site waffle cones wafting through the air, and our homemade ice cream (Gunther’s Ice Cream of Sacramento) is top notch, made the same way since 1949, and voted Best of the Best Sacramento nearly every year.

The Tradition of Wedding Cakes

HOW MUCH TO SERVE

SET-UP & CLEAN-UP

It’s time to start deciding on what to serve your guests. Your venue is going to dictate some of that, depending on what they are licensed for, plus you may want to keep costs in check.

Your bartender will be able to help you decide on what is appropriate, but here are some general rules based on 100 guests for 6 hours:

A professional service will show up to your event prepared. It’s not just the alcohol — there’s glassware and disposables, ice for keeping drinks cold and having for mixed beverages, garnishes, bottle openers, cocktail napkins, plus other non-alcoholic beverages.

Hiring a professional bartender is highly recommended way to cover your budget and venue requirements. They are licensed and insured, provide proper staff and supplies for the event, are able to mix drinks properly, and making sure only those who are served are of legal drinking age.

BEER: Full bar - 120 servings; Wine & Beer only - 150 servings or 1 keg WINE: Full bar - 75 bottles: Wine & Beer only - 112 bottles MIXED DRINKS: 10 bottles of liquor Be sure to know your crowd, it may require adding a little more of one or the other.

And don’t forget at the end of the night when everyone is partied out and ready to go, but there is still cleaning to do. A professional service will assure you that it will all be handled so you can relax.

saying “i do” The most important part of the wedding day is often the last thing to be decided on.

Picking an Officiant

Traditionally, couples would use a familiar clergy member to perform their ceremony. Just like many wedding traditions, the modern era is bringing change to how couples make their vows. Nondenominational ministers are ordained and not affiliated with a religion, making them a good choice for intercultural or inter-faith unions and nonreligious ceremonies. A sitting judge is legally able to perform your ceremony.

Family

Finding a person you connect with will make the process more comfortable. Even though it takes place in front of a crowd, your ceremony is an intimate experience. Many of us know someone who is a good public speaker or writes well, so the idea is tempting. It can be a good thing, as it can be meaningful to you and your partner. Your can request a one day license at the County Clerk’s office for a fee. This way they can legally perform your ceremony.

The challenge is, there is no uniform pricing for officiants. Many charge a flat fee, some charge per service. Services can include writing an original ceremony, coordinating a rehearsal, premarital counseling, as well as performing your ceremony. You could be charged a flat rate or per service. Talk with your fiance about what services are important to you. In our area couples can expect to pay from $400 to $700 for their officiant services.

Décor for the ceremony is just as important as the reception. Speak with you planner and florist to see how you can make it unique. Aisle treatments and altar pieces can usually be repurposed for the reception. Petals can be lined, scattered or patterned. Lanterns and shepherd’s hooks are nice finishing touches. Planning the RECEPTION

MEAGAN LUCY PHOTOGRAPHERS

Where to Start

Your reception could cost from one-third to almost half of your entire budget, depending on your choice of format, theme, date, time, activities, and guest list. With so much at stake for its success, you most certainly want to plan it carefully. Let us guide you through the major considerations when starting your search for the perfect venue.

80

l SACRAMENTO BRIDE AND GROOM l

Whether you use a wedding coordinator or elect to plan your own wedding, you and your fiancé need to discuss a few things before you start your search for a site. Wedding planners recommend that a couple first decide on the format and time of year they prefer. Some wedding formats lend themselves to warmer weather when activities can be held outside, but would not work in cold or inclement weather. Decide if you want a large or a small wedding, an indoor or outdoor ceremony, the same

location for the ceremony and reception or two separate sites, an afternoon or evening wedding, formal or more casual arrangements. Do you prefer a church or nondenominational setting for the ceremony? Have you always dreamed of saying “I do” under an arch of fragrant flowers in a colorful garden or descending an elegant staircase with your long train flowing behind you? Each format has its own rewards and challenges. After you have determined the format and time of year, the two of you should discuss the activities you want included,

c e re m o n y & re c e p t i o n the kind of food you want served, and the number of guests you plan to invite. Armed with your list of preferences, you are ready to begin your search for the right reception site. If you are hiring a wedding consultant, she will offer excellent suggestions on locations to fit your ideas and personal preferences. You will want to check out facilities yourself. Visit a facility’s website for information on room sizes, capacities, amenities, and services. When you call the site, first ask the banquet or catering manager about availability on your chosen date or time of year. Make an appointment to tour the site if available.

requirements for entrances, exits, rest rooms, and parking spaces as some of your guests may be in wheel chairs. Ask if the facility has restrictions on alcohol (which includes bringing in your own wine, beer or champagne), music or decorations (for example, candles on the tables). Make sure that the room’s décor is complementary or adaptable to your chosen color scheme. Ask about hanging decorations from the ceiling or attaching things to walls or columns. Find out which florists have used the facility so you can investigate what they have done there.

However, if your family members are decorating the reception hall, make sure they work in cooperation with the venue’s staff by knowing when to start and what time they must be finished.

Understand Charges & Services

When you get cost estimates, be sure you understand what is included and not included in the estimate. Some full service facilities can provide everything you need for a memorable wedding: ceremony and reception rooms, food and beverages, tables, linens, china,

Plenty of Options

Booking Your Reception

The Sacramento region has a wonderful assortment of reception sites. Depending on your idea of the perfect party, you can choose from beautiful baroque or modern ballrooms, elegantly appointed private country clubs, magnificent historic mansions, posh restaurants and resorts, sophisticated art galleries, convenient hotels, wine producing vineyards, artfully designed courtyards, blooming gardens, or manicured parks. Your options might amaze you!

What to Look For

Before you fall in love with a location, make sure that it is available. Availability and seating capacity are the first two considerations. When you ask about capacity — how many guests can be served comfortably — be sure to tell the banquet manager what you need to carry out your plan. That could include a head table, dance floor, cake table, gift table, stage for a disc jockey or band, bar or beverage service, and a reception line. Ask about parking, security, and emergency plans at the facility. Find out if the facility complies with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)

ized list of costs for the items you require. After you have selected a facility, be sure you get a revised estimate of costs if you make any changes to your original plan since additions may add significant costs. You don’t want to be surprised by the final bill on your wedding day. Most facilities require a sizable down payment to reserve the site. Requirements for paying the remaining balance differ from facility to facility. Be sure to ask each facility about its payment schedule. One more thing: cost estimates from catering managers and facility coordinators do not include taxes and gratuity, which could add 25% or more to your costs.

MEAGAN LUCY PHOTOGRAPHERS

Avoid Conflicts

Some ceremony and reception sites schedule more than one wedding or event per day in five- to six-hour blocks, typically 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 12:00 midnight. Make sure that the reception hall can be completely reset and decorated in time for your party if your reception is the second one on the day’s schedule. Most facilities can “turn a room,” that is, tear down and reset tables, chairs, and staging, in a very short time because they plan for it with sufficient staff.

flatware, staff, music, dance floor, table decorations, and even the cake. They usually have onsite catering managers who act as wedding coordinators to help you locate other quality vendors to carry out your plan. Some facilities offer limited coordination services and welcome professional wedding consultants to coordinate the efforts of other vendors and work with the facility’s staff. Facilities that are not full service may charge separately for the amenities. Make sure that each facility gives you a written, item-

Wedding consultants and facility managers recommend that you reserve your reception site as soon as you get engaged to ensure that you get the facility you really want. The most popular months for weddings in the Sacramento area are May, June, September and October. If you are considering those months for your nuptials, you may need to book your site at least a year in advance and some locations in the region are so popular that they book two years out. Most facilities, however, recommend six months to a year. For weddings in unpredictable months (like October and April), be sure and have a back up plan for inclement weather. Saturdays, the most popular day for weddings, fill up first. Friday and Sunday nights can help stretch your budget since they generally are less expensive than a Saturday. Consider your own needs, the convenience of family and friends who will travel to attend your wedding, and the season when you select the day of the week for your wedding.

Buckhorn Steakhouse

The De Vilbiss Hotel was constructed on the corner of Main and Railroad Avenue in Winters in 1889 by John A. De Vilbiss, a prominent Winters rancher. John Pickerel acquired the business in 1980. In 1991 Melanie Bajakian-Pickerel, John’s wife,

refurbished the “De Vilbiss Room” bringing back the charm and décor of the original architecture. A hundred years later, the same spirit of friendliness that made the Hotel De Vilbiss popular at the turn of the century, is still found at the Buckhorn; now famous across the state for its beef, lamb and fresh fish. Enjoy a reception or rehearsal dinner in our new private “De Vilbiss Dining Room.” The De Vilbiss room provides an intimate setting furnished with a hand carved wooden bar, magnificent mirrors, chandeliers, imported carpet and chairs. The room is “charmed and décored” with the essence of the original architecture of the Historic De Vilbiss Landmark. The De Vilbiss room offers a comfortable setting for 25-65 people. Our entree selections are exclusive “Certified Angus Beef” and are directly from our award winning steakhouse menu. Our professional event planners are available to work with you to arrange everything you will need for your special event.

Eventi, Ltd.

The outside areas offer a well-equipped grill and outdoor kitchen along with a highpressure misting system throughout for excellent comfort on a hot Sacramento summer day. The beautiful, patina wrought iron gate that opens in to the sunken courtyard is true to the old world Mediterranean history that was inspired by Italian vineyard homes. This fabulous location is just perfect for ceremonies and or receptions up to 120 guests and has an amazingly personal and very private feel. The venue is predominantly outdoors and is mostly covered. The focal point as you step down into the secluded space is a beautiful water feature with stone and pottery. Two of the patio walls feature trellising plants that add to the lovely courtyard feel. Off of the courtyard patio is a small multi-purpose room that can be used nicely for a buffet, cake station and/or bar areas. Adjacent to the patio kitchen is the venue’s larger space, fittingly referred to as “The West End”. While the patio alone can accommodate smaller parties, you need only expand your event to include The West End to accommodate a larger party with an additional 2,500 square feet of amazing outdoor space. The West End features an enormous sail-shade, lots of

lush greenery and a charmingly rustic barn wall that borders its northern side. Eventi Ltd. supplies nice Napa style wrought iron tables and chairs on the patio and table seating for 12 in the multi-purpose room that can easily be converted to the buffet, gifts and bar areas mentioned above. What’s more, Eventi Ltd. also offers a whole host of different table and chair options for the patio and The West End as well glassware, linen and outdoor heaters. The venue is very reasonably priced to begin with and then becomes an amazing value when you can select an affordable caterer, or bring your own food and beverages. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE Get more for your money with these budget-saving tips

Go Off Season

Cut the List

December - March is the slow season for weddings. Check with vendors and venues for off-season specials.

Keep the guest list between 50-75 people. Make the wedding about sharing your love with close friends and family.

Something Borrowed

Think Outside the Buffet

Not everything needs to be new. If you can make use of gently used items, you may save enough to splurge on something currently out of reach.

Forgo a meal or work with your caterer to design an appetizer or dessert buffet. Plan the event outside of normal meal times..

Skip the Saturday Monday-Thursday offer the best pricing. Fridays and Sundays are also usually less than a Saturday night.

Watch the Clock

Keep within your allotted time to avoid overtime charges.

Dividing the EXPENSES

With careful thought and open, cooperative discussion, both families can decide which these suggestions is most suitable for handling your wedding costs.

BRIDE & GROOM PAY

EXPENSES SHARED

ASSIGNED EXPENSES

Traditionally, the brides family paid for the wedding, with just a few items being covered by the groom’s side.

This alternative constitutes dividing total expenses into thirds — the bride’s family, the groom’s family and the couple all pay a share.

You may choose to have specific items covered. An example, the groom’s family pays for the ceremony, while the bride’s family covers the reception, while the bride and groom pay for everything else.

Modern couples are taking more of the financial burden. With more Sacramento couples working, many of them are opting to pay for their own weddings, especially older couples and those getting married the second time.

You could also split expenses between both families. What is normally paid by each side are combined and split in half. The bride and groom assume the expenses usually assigned to engaged couples.

Another option is while the bride’s family pays for ceremony & reception, the groom’s family gets assigned to florals, bar and entertainment.

A great wedding DJ keeps the party going, the event flowing, and helps your other vendors do their best. We recommend that you ask the disc jockeys you interview about the following items: n A written contract: As with all of your wedding suppliers, get everything in writing. A written contract should detail exactly who will perform at your wedding, what music and services you want and will receive, and the cost for all services provided n Liability insurance: Most wedding venues require liability insurance. Make sure your DJ has coverage. n Convenient means of communication: A fulltime, professional entertainment company will have several means of communication so that you will be able to reach them at any time to ask questions or resolve issues. Get all the numbers: land and cell phones, as well as an email address n Professional sound equipment: It’s unlikely that you will know what sound equipment is professional quality just by its name, so ask to hear an example of its sound. Ask what backup systems will be in place in case something goes wrong or malfunctions. Ask what extra equipment might be necessary at your chosen venue. n A detailed plan for your wedding: Get a written schedule of activities for your wedding from your DJ detailing what is going to happen when, who is doing it and where it will happen, so that you and the other wedding vendors will be on the same page during the event.

Wedding PHOTOS & FILM HIRING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER FOR YOU The relationship with your photographer is the most intimate one you’ll have with any wedding professional you’ll hire besides your wedding planner. You will spend hours together for engagement photos and then another eight to ten hours on your wedding day. The ability to work with you comfortably is very important. Your photographer will be present at some of your most emotional times during your wedding celebration. You should start looking for a photographer right after you and your fiancé set the date. Top-notch photographers book six months to a year in advance and you’ll have a wider choice of talent if you start looking early. Plan on interviewing a number of photographers and make appointments to meet them personally once you’ve seen their portfolio and love their style. This is an important day, so choose carefully!

HOW TO GET A

Phenomenal Film A wedding film may be the best to preserve moments and memories that can’t be captured with traditional photography.

The best videographers book six months to a year in advance; so call early.

Go All Access

Allow your videographer to film behind-the-scenes moments, such as the the florist bringing you your bouquet, or the band warming up. You’ll not only capture the big moments of your day, but all the fine details that made it happen.

Choose your Music

Provide your videographer with a list of special songs to be used in editing. To avoid having a song that you hate show unexpectedly in the film, ask to review any potential selections before they’re used.

Go Multimedia

Many videographers are combining old photographs, heirlooms, home videos, and other recordings to add texture and personality to their final productions. Ask your videographer what he or she might do.

Many videographers can provide quick on-site editing of some film. For example, the ceremony video could be quickly edited and set to the song you’ll use in your first dance. Have it shown in the background on a big screen as you dance.

Gift Copies

Some videographers can provide Same Day Edits on DVDs as favors for your guests to take home that night. Or, ask him or her to put together a shortened version to send out afterward to guests. Try using it as a “thank you” note!

hen Autumn Roberti met her friend Jen Calahan’s brother, Joe, little did she know that introduction would lead to them tying the knot not once, but twice. When the Marines Corps assigned Joe to duty in Okinawa, Japan, he asked Autumn to join him there so they could be married. She immediately packed her bags and headed off to be with the love of her life and on January 8, 2016 the couple was married in a small ceremony in Okinawa. While Autumn was thrilled at being Mrs. Joe Calahan, and considered January 8th “the happiest day of my life” she felt a void, mainly because her parents, friends, and everyone she loved were not able to be there. That void was filled a few months later, on July 23, 2016 when Joe and Autumn repeated their vows – this time in front of their families and friends, at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills. Finally, this was the wedding of Autumn’s dreams. Glass cylinders with floating candles and gorgeous flower arrangements with combos of garden roses, hydrangeas, and anemones in blush and white complimented the navy, white and gold wedding colors. They also coordinated beautifully with Autumn’s mermaid style dress that had a detailed lace back and a sweetheart neckline. Autumn said that the Serrano staff was very accommodating on the room set-up and even came up with a signature non-alcoholic drink and provided a much-better-than-normal custom buffet. Joe and Autumn’s first dance was to a slow country song that was the springboard for lots of dancing to follow. Autumn very wisely packed a pair of sandals for all that dancing and said, “They saved WINTER • SPRING 2017 l SACBRIDE.COM l

my life! Every bride should remember to pack a pair of comfortable shoes.” Following an increasingly popular trend, their wedding was “unplugged,” meaning that the guests were asked to leave their cell phones, tablets and any other device that could be used for recording or picture taking, turned off, allowing for more privacy and far fewer distractions for everyone. When asked what the most “unexpected” part of the day was, both Joe and Autumn replied that even though they were expecting something to go wrong, nothing did. It was perfect and “magical.” What’s better than that? When asked if she would do anything differently Autumn replied that she would have “danced more.” It’s a pretty safe bet there won’t be a third wedding for the Calahans’ — but who knows, maybe a vow renewal ceremony with nonstop dancing will be on the calendar in 2041.

getting started

I

n March, 2012, when Vanessa Rodriguez was working as a server at Jinju Sushi in Woodland she got something way better than a generous tip: an introduction from the head chef to his friend Joel Nafziger. An instant mutual attraction led to a first date, then another, and another – culminating in their wedding story: After being together for a couple of years the couple started talking about taking the next step and agreed they would get married. They went shopping and picked out Vanessa’s engagement ring, which Joel immediately took over to his parent’s house “for safe keeping.” Vanessa believed that the ring buying trip was the end of any romantic on the knee ‘will you be my wife’ scene – you know, the one she had been dreaming of since she was a little girl. That evening Joel suggested they take their two dogs for a walk. Vanessa remembers that the sun was setting and the sky was full of vivid colors only Mother Nature can provide. Mid-way on their route Joel stopped and dropped to one knee. Taking Vanessa’s hand in his he said those most magical of words: “I love you, Vanessa, will you marry me?” as he slipped the sparkling diamond that he had retrieved from his parents’ house onto her finger. Now officially engaged it was time to start planning the wedding. Vanessa, a Woodland resident, wanted to get married in her hometown, so found a local venue whose coordinators had great ideas to fulfill Vanessa’s vision of a ‘rustic country chic’ wedding. The ranch, with its ancient trees, shady reception area, leafy arbors and beautiful mansion was the perfect setting. The wedding date,

WINTER • SPRING 2017 l SACBRIDE.COM l

October 1, 2016, was set, a long list of things to do was made, and plans were put in motion. After trying on what seemed like hundreds of dresses, Vanessa chose an ivory/pink champagne David Tutera Beryl dress. It had everything she was looking for –gorgeous but functional, elegant but young and fun, and most importantly, she thought Joel would be blown away when he saw her in it. The day of the wedding saw perfect weather and a flurry of activity at the ranch. Vanessa’s rustic country chic was put together beautifully with some simple touches, like centerpieces made of wooden boxes that had been painted to match the wedding colors of plum, ivory and gray. Inside were mason jars with baby’s breath and a touch of burlap. The bar area had an ornate chandelier hanging from a tree, thus putting the “chic” into the country theme. Behind the bar were signs with words like ‘love’ and the couples’ initials, showcased by candles that had been artfully placed around the area. Following dinner that included a Tex-Mex Caesar salad, tequila lime chicken Spanish rice, and fajita style veggies, the wedding party – six bridesmaids, five groomsmen and 225 guests enjoyed the wedding dessert — three types of cupcakes: churro, chocolate or vanilla. Vanessa said the most romantic part of the day was the first dance with her husband. Saying that even though they were surrounded by a crowd of people, swaying to their favorite country song “From the Ground Up” made her feel that it was just the two of them. Joel made his new bride laugh and surprised her — and all those who know him, when it was time for the garter toss. Vanessa thought their first dance would be about all the dancing Joel, who doesn’t like to show his moves, could handle. So she was shocked to see him not only doing a little dance before the toss, but a sexy one at that. Vanessa and Joel said that if three words could sum up their wedding it would be these: amazing, beautiful, and blissful; a day that will be remembered by them forever.

hen professional rugby player and Ireland native John Quill was offered a spot on the new U.S. National Rugby team in Sacramento, he jumped at the chance. When he told his girlfriend Niamh (pronounced Neev) about the exciting opportunity she agreed to accompany him to Sacramento. Shortly before they made their long journey to Northern California John took Niamh on a trip to Dublin, one of their favorite cities. It was Valentine’s Day weekend and the destination was Co. Wicklow at Powercourt, which is, Niamh said, a gorgeous old mansion with “the most beautiful gardens and views of the Wicklow Mountains.” After lunch the couple went for a walk. Going over a little bridge with water running under it John asked Niamh to stop a minute. Taking her hand in his John told her how much he loved her and would she do him the honor of becoming his wife. Caught completely unaware, Niamh was in “utter shock.” It was, she said, the “most wonderful moment.” The two high school sweethearts had been dating for nearly 10 years, but were the first of their friends to plan a wedding. Neither Niamh nor John had even been to a wedding as adults. The wedding would take place in Sacramento, far from most of their family and friends, but the couple was up to the task. Exploring wedding planning sites on-line, one day Niamh found Sacramento Bride and Groom magazine and its bounty of everything needed to plan the perfect wedding. Putting it on her favorites list it became her go-to source for everything they would need. She shared the link with her mom and best friend in Ireland so even though they were thousands of miles away they could help with the planning process.

Since Niamh couldn’t be in Ireland for her big day, she decided to bring Ireland to California. She wanted a homey feel and found that décor vendor Dogwood Rentals could help with that vision. Gloria, the owner, was “amazing and so helpful” in pulling all of Niamh’s and John’s ideas together and helping them pick just the right pieces for their wedding. Gloria became something of a defacto wedding coordinator. After exploring many venues they decided that the Vizcaya Pavillion, with its Victorian architecture, beautiful brick courtyard, lush greenery and downtown Sacramento setting, was the perfect spot. Sending her measurements and vision of her wedding dress to Cinderella’s Closet in Cork, Ireland, within a few months she had received her sleeveless ivory gown with delicate lace detailing that went into a dip. She had her accessories: a bracelet given to her by her grandmother Maisie and her dad’s grandmother’s wedding ring that she would wear on her pinky finger. When the day of the wedding, September 21, 2016 arrived, the couple was ready. White and lavender roses, white hydrangeas, eucalyptus and purple delphinium were the flowers chosen to compliment the wedding colors of ivory, silver and lavender. The 50 wedding guests – many from Ireland, and new friends the couple had made since their arrival in April, enjoyed a wedding feast that included salad, chicken cordon bleu, beef sirloin and baked gnocchi. The wedding desserts satisfied every taste since they had many choices: lemon and chocolate cupcakes, éclairs, brownies, fruit tarts and chocolate covered strawberries. The couple’s first dance was to Colbie Cailat’s ‘Bubbly,’ a song they have both loved since they were 17. When asked what the most unexpected part of the day was, they both answered, “Everything.” The entire event was unexplored but exciting territory. A once- in- a- lifetime event they will treasure forever. The words Niamh used to sum up her wedding were, “special, fun, and intimate.” The most romantic part of the day for John was watching his bride walk down the aisle, and for Niamh it was hearing John say “I do.” It was a perfect day for a very special couple.

n 2013 when Macee Hall would go with her friend KC over to their friend Shawn’s house Geoffrey Lozada would almost always be there. Early on Macee and Geoffrey started flirting but for quite awhile it never went any further than that, even though KC and Shawn kept telling the two that they were sure they would wind up together one day. Flirting quickly became dating and after a couple of years of getting to know one another and feeling their love for each grow to the point where neither wanted to be without the other, one day Geoffrey invited Macee to go to a Giants Baseball game with him. During one of the innings they went for a walk around the stadium. Stopping for a photo a friend of theirs wanted of the couple Macee moved to put her arm around Geoffrey. Just at that moment he stepped back from her and dropped to one knee. As Giants fans filed past Geoffrey proposed to a completely shocked Macee. As on-lookers realized what was going on they clapped and cheered for the newly engaged couple, and Macee just couldn’t stop crying. She was, she recalls, completely overwhelmed that the “man of my dreams” had just proposed. Macee describes Geoffrey as “tall, dark and handsome,” and more importantly, she went on, he is “incredibly selfless and family oriented.” And then there is the fact that he is madly in love with her. Geoffrey said that Macee “Lights up a room with her beautiful smile and stunning good looks. I knew instantly that she is one of a kind.”

KC and Shawn’s prediction that “one day” Geoffrey and Macee would be together came true when the couple was married on May 13, 2016 in front of 154 guests at Arden Hills Resort Club and Spa. Macee wore a mermaid style dress with a sweetheart neckline. Her wedding flowers included hydrangeas, ranunculus, Tibet roses, peonies, baby’s breath and several other varieties that added to the classic elegance with a “touch of romance” wedding theme she had envisioned. The décor was classic white with a touch of gold. While white and gold were the predominant colors, tangerine orange added a pop of color. Macee’s six bridesmaids wore tangerine colored formal floor length gowns and the six groomsmen wore tan suits with orange bowties. The wedding feast was part homage to Venezuela, the country of Geoffrey’s birth and where he lived until his parents immigrated to the U.S. when he was 5. Dubbed “Venezuelan Cultural Appetizers” – cheese and beef empanadas were followed by bruschetta chicken, tri-colored tortellini, rosemary roasted potatoes and various salads. The wedding dessert was a gorgeous four-tiered cake: chocolate with custard, lemon with lemon filling, red velvet with cream cheese filling, and white cake with fresh strawberries. The couple’s first dance was to Chris Young’s ‘Who I am with You’ and was the perfect tune to start the party. Both Macee and Geoffrey said that dancing the night away and watching their friends and family having such a great time was their favorite part of the wedding. Any advice for other couples planning a wedding? Macee echoed the sentiments of almost every bride when she said “Don’t sweat the small stuff – and even some of the big stuff. Everything will come together perfectly for your big day. Most importantly, enjoy every second of it.” A quick learner, Geoffrey had these wise words for future husbands: “She’s always right, no matter what.”

ove was on the horizon for Don Antonio and Gretchen Tapang when the two young teenagers – Don was 15, Gretchen, 14, met at their church. That meeting would lead to a 10-year courtship that ended with their wedding on May 6, 2016. Here is part of their story: In the summer of 2015 the couple made a goal to achieve the “Spartan Race Trifecta” which required them to complete three races: a 5k, 10k, and a half-marathon. All of the races, especially the half-marathon, included numerous obstacles like crawling under barbed wire, hauling and pushing rocks, and climbing over 8-foot walls. On September 26th, the day of the marathon, the temperature was 100 degrees. The couple managed to complete the race and met the challenge of over 30 obstacles in their path. Arriving at the finish line, and much to Gretchen’s surprise, was Don’s family and several of their friends. With the John Legend song ‘All of You’ playing in the background Don got down on one knee and proposed to the woman he had been in love with for 10 years. Gretchen had seven months between her engagement and wedding date to plan every detail of her perfect day. She didn’t waste any time. After exploring the myriad of wedding sites in and around the Sacramento area she finally decided that Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln was the perfect venue. Its gorgeous setting and the confidence of the club’s wedding coordinator, Christina Addiego, that she could help turn Gretchen’s vision into reality was all she needed. That trust, she would learn on May 6th, was not misplaced. The couple was married at the same church where they met: Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) in Roseville. party all did their jobs perfectly – from the little ring bearer and flower girl to the best man and maid of honor. But the undisputed star of the show, Gretchen, took Don’s breath away when she began her slow walk down the aisle. Her white lace overlay gown fit beautifully and was in perfect harmony with her bouquet that was made-up mostly of white orchids and peonies. Gretchen said that the expression on Don’s face when she made her long-awaited entrance was the “most romantic” moment of the day Following the formal ceremony the wedding party and 145 guests made their way to Catta Verdera for the reception. Gretchen’s colors of navy blue, silver and gray carried over from the church to the reception site, where the wedding theme of “Love is in the air” with bird details could be seen everywhere. Guests dined on delicious fare that included appetizers like chicken lettuce wraps, beef satay, crab cakes and shrimp cocktail. Entrees included lobster bisque, spinach salad with balsamic vinaigrette, tri-tip with mushrooms, and several other mouth watering dishes. Dessert was wedding cake and ice cream. The couple had an unexpected surprise when they were given a video greeting from all their friends and relatives from far-flung places such as the Philippines, Japan, Canada, Italy, etc. Distance may have kept many of them from attending the wedding, but nothing could stop them from sending their love. Rain the day before the ceremony forced the photographer, Maria Olech from Elegant Events Media to change the site to a more public area where all the attendees could watch. Gretchen said that initially they were a little concerned about having so many on-lookers, but as it went on, they wound-up enjoying what quickly became an interactive photo session between the wedding party and all the attendees. Gretchen said that her and Don’s favorite part of the day was spending it with family and friends from out of town/state/country. Gretchen went on to say that her advice to other brides is just to enjoy your day, and don’t sweat the small stuff. It will all work out.

After seeing the remarkable entry presented by Accents by Sage for the tabletop design contest at the 2016 California State Fair, we just had to share. This very original design started with a centerpiece using a large gnarled piece of wood as the receptacle for the floral arrangement. We then created three tablescapes, coordinating linens and tableware for distinctly different looks, from delicate and elegant to bold and colorful. With signature cocktails created to reflect our table styles, we’re ready for the judges!

Jenn Robirds Events brought us the hot new trend for 2017: The King’s Table. The common element in all three were the flowers and garlands. She chose lavendar, gray and light blue for the palettes, mixed with silver, gold, brown and ivory. The Lilac Table was decked out with velvet linens and small cake placecards. The Grey Stripe table went modern, with metal chairs and chargers. Last, the Farm Table. Garland centerpiece with lanterns and wicker chargers, and cross back chairs. CHOOSING WEDDING FLOWERS

Because of the time and expense involved, flowers are one of the first wedding elements you should plan – usually right after you’ve selected your ceremony and reception location and photographer. Popular and talented florists book well in advance and many experts recommend selecting your florist 6 months to a year prior to your wedding date.

BUDGET

Flowers generally account for 5-15% of your overall budget. Trust your florist to guide you thru the process of getting the most beautiful flowers that are readily available. Specialty flowers are often seasonal, and add a lot to your budget and minimize how many florals you can have at the wedding.
