“Identification of Gorkha” Gorkha’s Role in the Battle of Khalubar, Kargil. The movie “Sign” is life story of courageous Nepali and Gorkha Soldiers. This “Sign” is the movie of those Gorkha Soldiers, who are the real heroes. The courageous Gorkha have performed their bravery and created the histry on the First World War, Second World War, Pakistan War, Falkland War and Kosovo War, which is immortal. Likewise, the Gorkha had fought the battle bravely and registered the history as winner on the Khaluwar and Kargil War on 1999. The movie “Sign” is the presentation of history of Gorkha performed on the Khaluwar, and Kargil War, where 14 Gorkha Soldiers have lost their life and other brave soldiers have received bravery medal. The movie have shown the character of soldiers by their name and the inter relation of the art and culture of eastern and western Nepal. The 1999 Khaluwar war was fought by 1/11 G. R. under the command of C. Lalit Rai. The war continued from May 9, 1999 to July 7 1999 and followings are the Name List of the brave soldiers sacrificed their life on the war.

Identification of Gorkha...... I don’t fear any power of the world but, my heart starts trembles when I hear the name “Gorkha”- Kejar William. If I had Gurkha, I could win the whole world. - Hitler This statement of ‘Kejar William & Hitler” shows the success of courage, honesty, devotion and sacrifice of Nepalese Gorkha Army. The main slogan of Gorkha Army on the battle was, “It is better to die as a warrior that living as cowardice. The Gorkha Army had 45 Battalions until the Second World War and has been successful to achieve 26 Victoria Cross until Sarwak War. Khukuri is the symbol of the courage of Gorkha Army. When the bullet hits a gorkha he dies after assassinating ten enemies. This is the symbol of courage performed by Gorkha on Pak or China War. A part from the war the military life also has the connection with social relations. They also had the feeling to make their life successful, but they sacrifice their life, for performing their duty without having the opportunity to experience this part of their life. And this is the identification of Gorkha.

How did you prepare for the battle?

The situation in a battle is tense. In the war repertoire it is called the fuck of war. This implies bombardment, arms and ammunition, mines in all directions. I met with each of them, introduced myself, encouraged and emboldened them. I will lead you from the front in this attack. In case someone deviates from the directed route, then I will shoot from my pistol. Even in case, I stray away from the direction you are most welcome to shoot me. The soldiers replied: We are ready. I launched attack. The post that we needed to conquer was placed in the midst of high hillocks. We walked for 14 hours with baggage each second of which was riddled by machine gun fire. 18000 feet altitude, scant oxygen and difficulty in breathing. Our first adversary was the climate itself. We fought our way in extreme temperatures of -32 to -40 degree Celsius. We climbed the cliff from below and the enemies were easily raining machine gun fire on us. Captain Manoj Pandey was with me. I sent him to blow that bunker with 40 other soldiers and I myself ascended to the Khalubar Top with other troops because I had planned to reach the top before dawn. Captain Manoj

Pandey and BB Devan were very courageous soldiers. They blew up the bunkers one by one. Manoj Pandey was hit by bullets in his chest, shoulder and buttock. When he was attempting to blow the fourth bunker up with a grenade, he received 4 bullets on his forehead and he was killed. Charging hand grenades, BB Devan also destroyed two bunkers but he also attained martyrdom. I continued to climb up and blew the rest of bunkers with bullets whizzing nearby. I was shot on my right leg. My uniform was torn by bullets. My men were thrown off the cliff by incoming fire. I held them on my lap and consoled the wounded. The wounded on my lap would tell me to move forward and that nothing would happen to them. They were sure of victory. When I returned, they were already dead in a position of gun pointed at the enemy and a finger still on the trigger. We charged and climbed uphill. 3 or 4 soldiers were before me. Stones were felling on our way. Later I knew that in fact those were the decapitated heads of our enemies. The enemies were 6 and 6.5 feet tall whereas we the Gorkhas are of 5 to 5.5 feet. We chopped the enemies with our Khukuries. Many enemies fled too. At last, we hoisted a flag on the Khalubar Top, previously seized by the enemy. We chased them away and emerged triumphant. Manoj Pandey was decorated by the Param Vir Chakra and I along with two others received the Vir Chakra. 29 others were conferred the Gallantry Awards. My Battalion earned the honour of Khalubar Battle which is highly esteemed in army circles. Most importantly, my Battalion won the Title of Famous of the Brave, Bravest of the Brave. Now on, the insignia of 1st 11 GR will have within its brackets the inscription of 'Bravest of the Brave'.

How was your experience post the victory in war?

I was most delighted on the fact that we, the Gorkhalis, have again written the history of blade of our Khukuri. I am so much proud of it. I mourn the fact that 14 of our soldiers lost their lives in the battle but I am also proud that they indeed got this opportunity to martyrdom. We, the soldiers nurture a dream of dying in the battlefield rather than by old age. This is a big honour of the armies. We respect those martyrs in that they are not dead. Instead they shall remain immortal. However, post war I was distresses. I remained mum for 3 months. I never liked to talk with anyone. Several of my soldiers attained martyrdom, scores were injured and maimed. Once, I was sitting on my Office when a runner brought a letter in a suitcase. I asked who has written this much letters. He replied: They belong to you sir. I told that I have a wife and how come she may write this much letters to me. He argued: No sir, these are for you. It is addressed to the Commanding Officer. I opened them and read. Those were written by several organizations and children in pages of copies and notebooks. They read: Our lovely army man. You are my brother. You return soon. We will tie a Rakhi band around your wrist. You saved us and we are very much obliged for that. I felt like crying on reading it. Our sacrifice was not in vain. People have understood the sacrifice made by Gorkhalis. Then I started talking. The wives of martyred soldiers came to me and said: You only lost a trooper. But I have lost the whole realm. Who knows who her husband was? May be it was Ram Bahadur or Tilak. Who knows? Then I reminisced. Everyone has to understand this message. How much sacrifice goes to write a name, a history?

This binocular seems to be broken. Its mystery?

Its mystery is an amazing one. When we chased away the intruders and reoccupied our land, I was surveying the situation from a hill. Suddenly, I fell flat on the ground and soldiers lifted me. When I saw, the binocular was severed in between. What actually happened was that a bullet fired by a remotely placed enemy sniper has hit my binocular. It was severed but I was intact. Until and unless death comes knocking, no one dies. Hence, I keep this binocular with myself. ยง You are yourself a commander of the battle. You fought it first hand and achieved victory. As such you came all the way from Pune, India and saw the movie 'Nishani' made on the real event and living history of war. How did you feel? I found the movie excellent. It is made well. All the original weapons which we used in the battle including the INSAS Rifle are used in the movie as well. The army itself is used. I had not seen a Nepalese war movie. But I got the opportunity to see the movie 'Nishani' made on the subject of conquest of Khalubar Hill, which I myself commanded. Being soldiers our lives are not limited to war and military only. We also have our private lives. The film also has effectively portrayed rain and shine, ups and downs, families, houses and Nepalese culture as well. Upon seeing it, I wished to visit my village. I could not know that even the Nepalese movies have become this much high standard. Bollywood film director Mr. JP Dutta is my friend. I also aided him in the making of Hindi cinema LOC. The 'Nishani' movie is a history of Gorkha Army. I will also try my best to show it to the soldiers. Gorkha Army

is studded with the history of heroism and sacrifice. 'Nishani' is made on the laurels of courage, gallantry and sacrifice which is a matter of delight for us. ยง generation?

At the end, what is your message to the forthcoming

I want to say that as told by our history, we are not only heroes and warriors, but now we also have to advance forward through our intellect and wisdom also. For this, education is crucial and we all have to be well educated. We Nepalese possess sharp minds and we are second to none in every sector. I have met numerous brilliant Nepalese brothers and sisters in Britain, US, Italy, Canada and Russia. One more noteworthy thing is that we should never forget our sincerity and honesty. Honesty is our identity as well as esteem. Col. Lalit Rai Dharan (At present Puna, India) Qualification: B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics Bangalore College, India
