My theme this edition is change. I've just been watching the Snowboard Big Air at the Cortina Winter Olympics and the tricks they are pulling off would have been thought impossible ten years ago.
Change is happening in and around our community too. Last edition we talked about the changes and developments close to home, some readers remember fondly a town centre filled with small shops, packed with people and a market overflowing with produce.
Town is changing, it's adapting and evolving, over the next few years we'll see much more change. Today, it was a rainy Saturday when I wrote this, I'd been into town where people were out and about, it wasn't 'flea market day busy' but it wasn't deserted as social media would have us believe and the cafe we went to was packed... Independent of course. Stick with it Chesterfield, personally I think we're doing OK, we have more than some and less than others, this will always be the case, but we need to see the positive in what we have here.
There is change for me too, S40 & S41 Local are moving to a new home. Once this edition is off to print I'll be packing my kit up and moving to a new creative hub on Station Road behind the Pomegranate Theatre and Museum. I'm looking forward to being part of this creative group. The irony is not lost on me that I'll be in a building creating S40 Local on a single computer, from a place that in the past, was home to an army of journalists and printers producing our local newspaper... What's that about change?
I'll hopefully bring you more on this, in the meantime enjoy this edition, oh and the extra daylight that spring brings.
Stay well.

The Creative Revolution
Text: Lucie Maycock Images: Creative Revolution
What if every street corner, classroom, and community hub in Chesterfield buzzed with creativity? A town where art isn’t a luxury, but part of everyday life-woven into the fabric of education, health, and community spirit. Since 2015, Creative Revolution has been bringing together cultural, educational and community partners to allow every person in Chesterfield access to a life that is creative, healthy, and rich in culture. Collaboration, creativity, and community are at the heart of everything they do.
Now, fresh Arts Council England funding, and an exciting rebrand, the partnership is starting an exciting chapter, placing youth voice at the forefront, working hand-in-hand with local schools, supporting artist development, and launching a series of pop-up events to showcase and celebrate the town’s creative energy.
Creative Revolution: Youth Voice at the Heart of Change
So far, our Youth Voice Group has empowered young people in Chesterfield to share their perspectives on creativity in the community and to play a central role in shaping the rebrand and identity of the project. Thanks to their input, we are now proudly known as Creative Revolution, a name that reflects real ownership and influence by the town’s young creatives.
The momentum is growing. Ten local schools have already signed up to our Schools Creativity Programme, opening the door for hundreds of children to develop new skills. Working alongside established local artists, they’ll experience a rich variety of artforms, from poetry to puppetry, visual art to willow craftbroadening horizons and sparking imagination. Behind the scenes, the project is strengthening Chesterfield’s creative economy. We’ve engaged 11 local artists in paid roles, offering high-quality professional development and employment opportunities.
Creativity Comes Alive in Chesterfield
And now, we're inviting the community to get involved, as Chesterfield is preparing for a wave of colour, imagination, and community spirit. A series of pop-up events is set to transform familiar spaces into vibrant showcases of local talent, celebrating the creativity of young people, schools, and artists.
These events will spotlight the diverse work emerging from the Creative Revolution programme. Interactive celebrations, bringing together families, artists, and communities to share, connect, and shape the future of creativity in Chesterfield.
Dates are now confirmed for all four events, marking a major milestone for the project. Each event will feature work from across the programme, including Artists Jam, YouSpeak, and schools’ projects, creating shared spaces of joy and collaboration.
Partnership is at the heart of this journey. Each pop-up will be delivered alongside local organisations and venues - Kakou CIC, Chesterfield College, Barrow Hill Community Trust, and Community Growth CIC - and enriched through close collaboration with schools and artists.
These events are immersive experiences, inviting audiences to engage directly with the work and the creatives behind it. With support from Derbyshire Voluntary Action, the pop-ups will also act as live consultation and listening spaces, ensuring community voices help shape the future of Creative Revolution long after this project concludes.
Creativity is thriving in Chesterfield - and we want YOU to be part of it, so join the Creative Revolution.
• Come along to the pop-up-events, bring your friends and family.
• Join in some creative activities for free.
• Grab a bite to eat, get a drink and browse the events.
• Share your ideas and experiences.
• Celebrate the incredible talent of local young people and artists.
• Add your voice to the conversation about Chesterfield’s creative future.

Claire’s Art Journaling Journey
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Claire Stead
I first met Claire (pictured) in the most ordinary of places: the school playground. We were two parents stood waiting for our children, for a while, we were also school governors together at Westfield. What I didn’t know then was that Claire was quietly at the beginning of an Art Journaling experience that would transform her life and thousands of others.
Claire worked as an early year’s teacher and has always been creative, but art journaling came into her life almost by accident. While attending a workshop at Straightcurves, she didn’t quite know what to expect as she sat down and began to explore what it was all about, and something clicked.
When she got home, she gathered whatever supplies she had, sat at her kitchen table, and began her art journaling journey in earnest. She started following other creatives online, watching how they worked and learning as she went. Soon after, she set up an Instagram account to share what she was doing. Her expectations were modest. “If I can gain some followers and maybe get some stuff for free,” she thought, “that would be great.”
At the time, Claire was working part-time at Libby’s and like so many others, her working life shifted dramatically during lockdown. Art journaling was beginning to take up more of her time and she realised she couldn’t do both. Around the same time, she started to build her confidence tutoring, alongside her teaching role, and clearly has a natural ability to guide and encourage others.
What stood out most, though, was the impact art journaling was having on her mental health, the practice became a way of processing daily life, worries, thoughts and emotions that might otherwise stay tangled in her head. Creativity, she explains, is proven to be good for mental wellbeing, and art journaling is just one of many tools available.
Claire set up a YouTube channel and began uploading her own videos. “I felt like I was learning all over again,” she says. “I’ve always been creative, and I started thinking, maybe I could make some money by creating tutorials.”
Suppliers started getting in touch, sending her materials in exchange for content, creating journals that the suppliers used and shared. Her personal following is now around 28,300 followers on Instagram and 17,000 on Facebook!
From the outside, it might look effortless, but Claire is quick to dispel that myth. She works on her business every single day, “it’s not a nine-to-five,” she says, “but I always do something.” She’s built her own website, developed courses, and created a working life that gives her balance. Her quality of life is high, her mind-set positive, and art journaling remains at the heart of it all.
Her work has even taken her to Australia, where she has delivered in-person tutorials and she’s heading back this year. What began as a hobby at her kitchen table has grown into a business rooted in creativity, connection, and wellbeing.
Claire’s range of products includes collage papers, stencils, and stamps designed to support journaling, alongside online classes. There’s also a subscription option offering exclusive content, weekly live sessions with Q&As, downloadable resources, and extra perks for members.
art_journal love art_journallove www.artjournallove.com
So, what is art journaling?
At its core, it’s about freedom. You can use any media you have available. It doesn’t matter if it goes wrong, you try things, see if they work, and if they don’t, you simply move on. You start with a journal, a book. Put your thoughts onto the page, worries, frustrations, things that feel heavy. Sometimes it’s just words, a kind of brain dump, you then choose colours and begin building up layers. Claire loves using rainbows, bright, hopeful, positive. As the layers build, the original text becomes obscured, losing its sharp focus, just as troubling thoughts often do over time.
Then you add stamps, collages, scraps of paper etc and a central focal point. Add a quote, something that resonates with the reason the page was created, use large letters, bold fonts, words that stand strong. The page has done its job. Each piece Claire creates comes from a particular place or issue. And the most important thing she wants people to know? You don’t need to be a skilled artist and you don’t need to get it “right.” Don’t be afraid to try, sometimes it’s deeply personal, but it’s always a safe place to put thoughts down, let them breathe, and gently move forward.
Claire’s story is a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful, sometimes all it takes is a blank page, a few supplies, and the courage to begin.
Sobriety & Wellbeing
Face-to-Face Coaching Support
For Chesterfield
Words & images: Your Sober Path
Sobriety and wellbeing coach Christine Coulson is launching face-to-face coaching sessions in Chesterfield, offering local residents confidential, non-clinical support to help them change their relationship with alcohol.
From February, Christine will see clients in person at Brampton Therapy Centre, Chatsworth Road, expanding her established online coaching practice to meet growing demand for in-person support. Her work focuses on people who are questioning their drinking for health and wellbeing reasons and want practical help to make changes.
Christine is the founder of Your Sober Path and has been sober for over four years, having quit alcohol in January 2022. She has coached clients online since 2023, combining professional training with lived experience. She is accredited by The Sober Club and IPHM, is a member of the Association for Coaching, and works with clients to address mindset, triggers, habits, and lifestyle factors linked to alcohol use.
“I wanted to bring my coaching to Chesterfield in person because some people value face-toface connection over working through screens,” Christine said. “I privately struggled with my relationship with alcohol before I quit, and I know how difficult it can be when you’re not dependent but feel your drinking is holding you back. Coaching can help people shift their mindset around alcohol and see that real change is possible.”
Sessions last one hour and are available weekly or fortnightly on Thursdays. Coaching is suitable for individuals who want to stop drinking or reduce their alcohol intake; Christine does not work with people who are alcoholdependent and encourages those individuals to seek specialist medical or clinical support. Ellena Outram of Brampton Therapy Centre on Chatsworth Road said: “We are delighted to welcome Christine to our clinic and team; we are very excited about how her Sobriety and Wellbeing life coaching skills will enhance our well-established therapy offer and add another treatment modality, which could help those in our community achieve their aims and goals.”
Christine’s personal story has been featured in Best magazine and Metro online, and she has spoken about quitting alcohol on BBC Sheffield, BBC Newcastle, and BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show. She is also an ambassador for Bee Sober.

Open Hūs
A new community home for hire
Text: Lucie Maycock
Images: Open Hūs
Open Hῡs is a space for the community to use, established by a group of creatives with a desire to help people whether they are looking to climb the artistic ladder or simply want a cost-effective place for a family party.
The initial idea came from Matthew Pritchard from Defeye Creative, Nathan Hamer from local arts charity Junction Arts and Lucie Maycock a local freelance and community artist. “Open Hῡs is a home for people to access arts and creativity workshops, but more than this, a space where community groups can meet and share experience and learning,” says Matt. In September 2025 they took on the space and set about creating the Community Interest Company (CIC) Open Hῡs. Hῡs (pronounced HOOS) is Anglo Saxon for house, building or household, family, so simply translates to Open House, a name fitting of the space, to the rear of 81 Saltergate.
The three businesses together with S40 and S41 Local magazines were all based at West Studios within Chesterfield College but when this was closed last year, we found ourselves homeless. We briefly operated from home but it’s not easy to work alone when you are used to being part of a family - so we temporarily moved into Open Hūs and have been based in the airy historic space for a few months. We have now moved out to be part of the new creative collective presently moving into the old office building on Station Road behind the Pomegranate theatre.
Exciting times, and something that we must thank Junction Arts and Chesterfield Borough Council for bringing together, watch this space for further info.
Having said all this, we have not been idle. The space has enabled creative arts groups to meet, hosted an alternative Christmas market, been home to networking groups, had people
drop in for hot desking, held team building and away day activities, held sound baths, kids birthday parties, family events, been a home for work experience students and a base for a recent photo shoot.
As you can see it's a mixed bag of activities, and there are plans for more over the coming months.
Do you need a space in which to meet?
Are you thinking of setting up a community group? Maybe you run a choir and are looking for rehearsal space, want somewhere to hold a team creative workshop, a band looking for practice space, somewhere to exhibit your artwork, you get the idea. Yes, it is just a room but it’s the people who fill it that make it a home.
Set up as a Community Interest Company (CIC) we are wanting to support others to launch creative sessions and groups, and build communities and connections within our town. We are keeping hire costs very reasonable, and any profit made will be used to support Open Hῡs events.
We would love to host and put on comedy nights, quiz night, dry nights (no alcohol events), small intimate acoustic sessions from local musicians, film nights, book clubs, exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations etc.
Located in the town centre it’s an easy venue to get to just behind the town hall. If you would like to see what we can offer, please drop us an email and welcome to the Open Hūs family. Open Hūs is now ready for you to book.

Cutthorpe Walk...
Park, woods & coffee!
Words & images: Paul Chapman
• Reaching a gate pass through the squeeze stile and head straight on.
• Pass through the gate (1) and continue along the path ignoring the track on the left, until you reach a T junction at the top of the hill.
• At the next fork in the path stay left with a slight incline towards the farm.
• Continue past the cowsheds and up through the farm ignoring the concrete path on the right hand side - THIS IS NOT A FOOTPATH.
A walk for drier weather or a muddy winter slide, and a the cafe stop at Cutthorpe Creamery - about 5.5 Miles. The route follows footpaths, bridleways and tracks, gates, stiles and some uphill sections, it's also VERY muddy after rain so don't wear your best white trainers!
This walk starts at Storrs Road car park and should take about two hours at a decent pace.
• From the car park, cross the pedestrian crossing towards the community centre, go right along Storrs Road, and immediately left up Upper Moor Street and then turn right at the end. Follow the path behind Brookfield School classrooms and up between two hedges with the school buildings on the left.
• At the end you enter an open field. Turn right across the field taking the diagonal path towards the grey fencing, towards the coppice.
• Pass between the edge of the school grounds and the end of the coppice, then head left up the field with open views of the countryside to your right. Reach the top of the coppice and go through the metal kissing gate. Turn immediately right and walk along the top of the field.
• Turn right to Ashgate Road, turn left and after about 75m, turn right along Woodnook Lane bridleway to Linacre.
• Continue for around half a mile until you see two metal gates on the right just before the woods (2). Turn right through the gate then after a short distance, drop down a steep slope through the coppice, (3) down some steps and over the wooden footbridge.
• Turn immediately right along the wide track across to reach another small gate (4). Follow the path with the fence on the left.
• Reach the brook and cross over the stepping stones (5). Go through the kissing gate and follow the path straight ahead. Continue round the edge of the field.
• At the end, on the right, cross another wooden footbridge (6) and turn left. Walk with the brook on your left and continue through the woods for approx. 1/4 mile until you reach the main path (7). Turn left at the bridge to take you in to Holmebrook Valley Park.
• At the horse trail sign turn left and follow the path with the brook still on your left hand side but you’re now heading back on the opposite side of the brook.
• At the first fork in the path continue left with the brook on your left on side.
• Follow the bridleway round a bend (see detour) and turn between two dry stone walls at the footpath sigh (8).
• TO THE CREAMERY - After the bend as you see a track on the right hand side, go through the gate and walk with the wall on your right and over a stone stile (15) and you'll see the Cutthorpe Creamery (16).
• Once you're done at the cafe retrace your steps to the farm lane. Turn left and then right between two drystone walls with a footpath sign turn (8).
• Reach a gate, go straight onto to a second gate (9). Go through this and continue straight over a stone stile (10).
• Go downhill then slightly right up the hill to another gate and into the woods (11) over the wall.
• Take the left fork down through the woods (12) staying slightly left and between the gateposts (13).
• Reach a gate (14), continue to the main path, turn left and continue straight back up the hill to eventually reach Ashgate Road to follow your route back to Storrs Road.

Mysteries Good Enough To Die For
Words: Katie Addy
Images: Biblico
It’s safe to say that the cosy murder mystery is back in fashion. With the recent release of the new Benoit Blanc mystery Wake Up Dead Man, the genre is absolutely killing it in the media, pun very much intended. Before I dive into my list of the best mysteries I read last year, I recommend getting cosy under a blanket with a hot drink and getting ready for your next case.
The Cat Who Caught A Killer
L.T Shearer's
The first book is one of my favourite recent franchises of all time, and that’s not just because of the cat. The Cat Who Caught a Killer is the first instalment in L. T. Shearer’s witty mystery series. We’re introduced to Lulu, a retired police officer still grappling with the loss of her husband, when Conrad the cat struts into her life. Not only is Conrad unique for being a male calico cat, but miraculously he can also speak.
When Lulu’s mother in law suddenly dies in her care home, the staff write it off as Alzheimer’s complications, but Lulu knows something isn’t right. Armed with her detective instincts and Conrad’s undeniable charm, the pair uncover secrets that are far better left hidden. This book is truly the cat’s whiskers, and with three sequels already available, and another releasing later this year, you won’t be without its comfort for long.
One of the series’ most appealing features is its lack of strict reading order. It isn’t necessary to start with the first book, a trait I accidentally discovered halfway through the third instalment, when I realised I’d skipped the second entirely. So, if you’re after a comforting mystery filled with friendship and secrets, L. T. Shearer may just be your new Agatha Christie.
Storm Front
Jim Butcher
My second recommendation is a little different. Unlike The Cat Who Caught A Killer, it leans heavily into dark fantasy, and I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re younger or squeamish about gore, but it’s a good thing you have a cosier option to balance it out. Storm Front by Jim Butcher follows struggling wizard Harry Dresden, who frequently assists the Chicago police with their more, supernatural cases. In this first instalment, a gruesome hotel murder scene leaves Dresden and the team baffled, with dark magic emerging as the prime suspect. Alongside his work with the police, Dresden must also deal with far more relatable horrors, money troubles, friendships, and his own love life. As the trail leads him deeper into a world of demons, and his own past, he relies on his hubristic wit and his talking skull companion, Bob. Bob’s appetite for trashy romance novels is only matched by his questionable advice, but together they just might keep the few people Dresden cares about safe. For fans of fantasy or the supernatural, this book perfectly blends the two genres into a horrifically fun world of wits, violence, and magic.
So, if you are in the mood for a talking cat (always), or if supernatural mysteries are your speciality, these books are guaranteed to fill that craving for comfort. Grab a blanket, a hot chocolate, and light the fire, you’ve got mysteries to solve, detective, and you’re the only one who can crack the case.

Got a story to tell? Junction Arts is turning 50 - and wants to hear from you
Junction Arts is getting ready to celebrate a big birthday, and it’s inviting the people who helped shape its journey to be part of it.
To mark 50 years at the heart of community arts in Derbyshire, the charity has launched 50 Stories for 50 Years, a year-long heritage project supported by a £56,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The aim? To collect, preserve and share the stories, memories and creative moments that Junction Arts has been part of since 1976.
If you’ve ever made a lantern, joined a festival, worked on a project, volunteered, or simply watched something magical unfold in your town, this project is for you.
From a small idea to a big creative force Junction Arts began life in the 1970s as South Normanton Community Arts. Over the decades, it has grown and evolved, and today it engages thousands of people each year through free festivals and events, making art and culture accessible to everyone.
Capturing 50 years of creativity
50 Stories for 50 Years will shine a light on the people behind the projects and the ways creativity has shaped their lives and communities across Bolsover, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.
digital archive for future generations. They’ll also inspire a documentary film and a touring exhibition, created by artists responding to the memories shared.
“The people are at the heart of it all”
Emily Bowman, Managing Director of Junction Arts, said: “We know Junction Arts has transformed lives, we hear it all the time, but now we have the opportunity to preserve and celebrate this incredible heritage.”

March's Tips...
For a sustainable garden
Words: Transition Chesterfield & Inspire Community Garden
Image by NordWood Themes on Unsplash
As the gardening year kicks off, there’s plenty to do, but don’t stress about perfect timing. Gardening should be enjoyable, so adapt to the weather and work at your own pace.
From mid-March onwards, unless it’s been freezing cold you can start planting potatoes. If frost is forecast, protect emerging foliage with a simple cover like newspaper—anything that prevents direct exposure to freezing air will help.
Plant onion sets and shallots, but be aware that birds may mistake the tips for worms and pull them up. Simply replant them if this happens. To deter birds, stretch a few lines of black thread tightly across the bed.
Perennial herbs like rosemary and sage benefit from a spring trim, while clumps of chives and mint can be divided and replanted. Now is also a great time to plant young thyme, sage, and rosemary.
Weeds will begin to appear, so regular weeding prevents them from taking hold. To suppress weeds naturally, mulch beds with organic matter like straw, bark, or leaf mould, which also improves soil health. While preparing beds, lightly dig in any old compost you have to enrich the soil.
As temperatures rise, lawns will start growing again. On a dry day, give your lawn its first cut of the season with the mower blades set high. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn acts as a natural fertilizer and helps retain moisture.
Plants in containers will appreciate a nutrient boost. Carefully remove an inch or so of the topsoil and replace it with fresh container-friendly compost. Choosing the right compost makes a big difference, especially for potted plants.
Indoors, sow seeds for tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, summer cabbage, and beetroot (sown in clusters in modules). Sow some sweet peas if you haven’t already.
If you have seedlings in a greenhouse or conservatory, ventilation is key. Open doors on sunny days to prevent overheating, but be sure to close them in the evening when temperatures drop.
If this year is anything like 2025, slugs and snails could be abundant again. Expect to see them emerging as temperatures rise. There are various ways to keep them in check—beer traps, copper bands, and hand-picking—but complete eradication is unlikely. Focus on protecting vulnerable plants and small areas. Encouraging natural predators like hedgehogs, frogs, and birds is one of the most sustainable long-term solutions.
Deadhead daffodils but allow the foliage to die down naturally before removing it. This helps restore energy to the bulb for next year’s blooms—tying leaves up prevents this process and looks untidy.
If you’d like further inspiration or advice on how to garden sustainably, visit Inspire Community Garden on Wednesday 1-3pm or Sunday 10-3pm.
