LONGBOAT KEY CLUB

EXPERIENCE Fall 2018

Green, All Over. The Resort at Longboat Key Club has received the state’s official “Green Lodging” certification, recognizing us as one of the premier environmentally conscientious lodging facilities in Florida. The Florida Green Lodging Program was established in 2004 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to encourage hotels and resorts to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources. By taking sustainable actions to reduce waste and conserve water, energy, and other vital resources, our Gulf-front resort is helping to preserve the natural environment that is so important now, and to future generations of Floridians. We’re also proud Sarasota County has officially designated the club and resort as a “Green Business Partner”— making The Resort at Longboat Key Club the very first resort and club in our area to achieve this meaningful honor! What’s more, Longboat Key Club Moorings, the club and resort’s 291slip, deep-water marina, has also been recognized by the State of Florida for its environmentally friendly practices and procedures. Its designation as a “Clean Marina” is based on having demonstrated a commitment to implementing and maintaining a host of best management practices. All in all, The Resort at Longboat Key Club is committed to reducing our environmental footprint through water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, clean air practices, and communication. GOLF • Automated equipment for timed golf cart charging during off-peak electrical hours GOLF MAINTENANCE Organic turf and landscape management has the goal of using techniques that are both results oriented and decrease impact on the environment and human well being, while also providing sustainable and marketable conditions. To that end we rely on products that consist of naturally occurring organic compounds that are derived from plant materials, biological organisms, or manufactured natural deposits. We also apply, record, and monitor according to the current requirements of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) as mandated by state, county, and local ordinances with regards to pest management and try to implement proper plant placement throughout the property. Specific approaches: • All dry fertilizers used on golf courses meet or exceed BMP requirements and primarily consist of Water Insoluble Nitrogen (WIN) derive from bone meals, fish meals, manures, and bio-solids fortified with humic and fulvic acids and sunflower hull ash to provide a slow release potassium source, also sometimes inoculated with microrhizal fungi beneficial for mining soil nutrients. • Sprayed material consists of filtered organic acids, purchased compost teas, purchased and brewed bacterial strains, and plant derived amino acids and other natural sugars. • We treat plant nematodes with timed applications of Bacillus firmis based on degree days in Spring and Fall. • We treat lake areas for weed development and algae blooms with biodegradable dyes only. • All other pesticide and herbicide treatments are limited to spot applications adhering to label requirements, threshold monitoring, and BMP mandates. • Water use and management is recorded daily and sampled monthly for total dissolved solids. Soils are sampled seasonal using both exchangeable and paste information. Tissue samples are taken weekly. • Daily cleaning of maintenance vehicles is performed with recycled water treated with special microbes to digest oils and other foreign solids. Concurrently, grass clippings are separated, dried, composted and returned to the golf course as recycled nutrients.

It’s

SeaTurtle Nesting Season! May 1 through October 31

The Resort at Longboat Key Club thanks you for helping us to protect our valuable sea turtles!

From May through October, during the height of tourist season, many sea turtle nests are dug by nesting female sea turtles on the shores of our beautiful Gulf Coast. All sea turtles that nest in the U.S. are either listed as threatened or endangered and there are penalties for killing, harassing or harming these turtles. The most common sea turtle nesting on the shores of Longboat Key is the Loggerhead, which is listed as threatened. Other sea turtles that have nested in Florida are the Green (threatened), Leatherback (endangered), Kemp’s Ridley (endangered) and Hawksbill (endangered) turtles.

A female sea turtle lays an average of 100 eggs in each nest. If the nest is left undisturbed, the eggs will hatch, on average, within 60 days and the hatchlings will race to the sea before they become snacks for hungry predators. Wildlife is not the only threat to the hatchlings. Beach visitors can also disturb nests and nesting sea turtles. To see sea turtles up close and to learn more about them, you may visit The Aquarium at Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota. You can also participate in one of our complimentary “Beach Walk and Sea Turtle Talks” here at the Resort.

To help keep sea turtles safe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service suggests the following guidelines.

Links on Longboat Redesigned by Ron Garl in 2014, Links on Longboat (formerly Islandside) has many characteristics of a seaside links course. Ocean breezes, expansive natural areas and big greens create an incredible golfing experience. Links on Longboat stretches out to 6,748 yards from end to end with five sets of tees to accommodate any level of play. The Par 71 layout demands accuracy off the tee. Most holes feature small waterways that run along one side of the fairway to force you into a decision on placement validating the original “watery challenge” description. Once you have driven your ball in a good fairway position that is where the fun begins. Our new

Ron Garl design challenges your iron play but also does not penalize you for an errant shot. Fewer bunkers and more grassed collection areas allow the golfer to have an easy pitch to the hole if you have missed the green. Each green has been completely redesigned with Ron’s creative imagination and all 18 holes have been re-grassed with the superior, salt tolerant Platinum Paspalum grass. In addition to the beauty of the natural wildlife seen on a daily basis, over 5,000 Palm trees along with pink and white Oleanders line the Links on Longboat.

Harbourside Courses Harbourside is located three miles north of the Links on Longboat and is commonly known as “the Member’s course” here at the Club. Harbourside consists of three nines that make up three distinctive eighteen hole options. All three nines vary in characteristics but all pose a great challenge when deciding which to play. Harbourside opened for play in 1982. Many of the holes border the Sarasota Bay and our own Longboat Key Club Moorings which makes for a beautiful setting. The White Egret nine measures 3,342 yards and has the least amount of water of the three nines. Don’t let the lack of water on this nine fool you. Its difficulty is found in tight fairways which demands accuracy off the tee. Once you’ve positioned yourself correctly, big inviting greens give you plenty of target to aim at. The Red Hawk was recently redesigned by architect Ron Garl who challenges the golfer with many risk and

reward opportunities. More open and forgiving than the White Egret, this nine has water that plays into many shots. The Red Hawk measures 3,314 and this past season the entire nine was re-sodded with the ever popular Platinum Paspalum grass. This new playing surface gives you a great lie every time and makes the game a pleasure to play. The final nine at Harbourside is our famous “Blue Heron” measuring 3,368 yards—our signature nine of all 45 holes here at Longboat Key Club. This nine was redesigned in 2005 and this year re-sodded with the new Platinum Paspalum grass as well. This nine boarders the Sarasota Bay with breathtaking views at every turn. It contains nine “signature” holes and challenges every part of your game. Tree-lined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making and course strategy. Courses designed by Ron Garl. Enjoy

five sets of tees on all three nines.

Apple

Strudel

by Chef Lori Desorcie

A

n easy alternative to hand-stretching strudel dough, puff pastry is quick and delicious. The bread crumbs help to absorb the juices and avoid overflow. Granny Smith, Gala, or Macintosh apples hold up the best when baked. • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (thawed) • 1 Jelly Roll Pan • 3 Apples (peeled and chopped small) • Juice of ½ lemon • ¾ cup White Bread Crumbs • ¼ cup Granulated Sugar • ¼ cup Brown Sugar • 1 tsp Cinnamon • ½ cup Toasted Walnuts (optional) • ½ cup Golden Raisins (optional) • 6 tbls Butter (melted and divided) • 2 tbls Sour Cream

Preheat oven to 325°. In food processor, grind 2 slices bread into fine crumb. Toast bread crumbs on a jelly roll pan in the oven until golden, about 6-8 minutes, then let cool. Adjust oven temp to 375°. Toss small apple bits into lemon juice. In a small bowl, mix sugars and cinnamon. Toast and chop walnuts. On a lightly floured surface, roll out thawed pastry into a thin 12"x16” sheet. Place dough on the same pan with parchment. Sprinkle bread crumbs evenly on bottom half of longer side, leaving a 1” border around. Quickly toss apples with sugar mixture, nuts and raisins and pile over bread crumbs. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Fold outside edges over 1” to overlap apples. Using the parchment paper to lift the bottom edge, carefully roll the dough over the apples, being sure to keep edges tucked in. Lay seam side down in jelly roll pan. Brush with remaining 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Bake 20 minutes, then pull out and brush with 1 tablespoon of sour cream. Bake 15 minutes, then brush with rest of sour cream. Finish baking another 5-10 minutes until golden, and any juice that has escaped is bubbling—a total of 40-45 minutes. Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar. Slice and serve with a dollop of fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Serves 6-8 people.

Oktoberfest:

by Chelsea Matthews

Beyond Brews

Oktoberfest is a beloved fall tradition, celebrated all over the world. Traditional German food, lederhosen and oompah music are all well-known standards for the autumnal fest. In Munich, Germany, the celebration is one of far more cultural history and significance, and one that has been around for over 200 years. While a nice cold brew and salty snack are a given appearance, remembrance of simpler times and humble beginnings make authentic Oktoberfest a truly unique experience.

L

ong before cities around the globe lined their streets with tents of beer, pretzels, and bratwurst, Oktoberfest got its roots from a royal wedding celebration in Germany. Before Meghan and Harry, Kate and William, or Diana and Charles, Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen were married in 1810. To mark this joyous occasion, the citizens of Munich, Germany were invited to revel at a festival in the fields in front of the city gates. Those fields were eventually

continue to provide the libations. While these large beer tents are often thought to be the main draw of the festival, it is still primarily a festival largely attended by families of all ages.

ENTERTAINMENT renamed Theresienwiese, or Theresa’s Fields, in honor and welcome of the new Crown Princess, though these days they are known to the locals simply as the “Wies’n.” Over 10,000 people attended the festival, which lasted for five days.

HORSE RACES

The main spectacle of the very first Oktoberfest celebration was a horse race at the conclusion of the evening. When the race was repeated the following year, the tradition of an annual celebration wad begun, though as years passed the

Eight years after the first event, carousels and swings began to show up to entertain party goers, and by the 1830’s vendors of beer and fish started selling their wares to ever increasing number of attendees. In the 1890’s, electricity brought with it a wave of new entrepreneurs carting animals shows, attractions, and rides waiting.

BEER STALLS, TENTS, HALLS

Evolving from the humble beer stalls in the early celebration, larger beer halls and tents brought together by inn owners and local breweries have taken over the refreshment portion of Oktoberfest. In fact, the original six Munich breweries still

FOOD

Savory meats are a very popular choice during the autumnal celebration. Schweinsbraten is pork served in juicy slices alongside gravy, while schweinshaxe, more commonly known as a ham hock, is roasted to tender inside, crispy outside perfection. Weisswurst, a bright white sausage made from veal and pork bacon, is probably the most unusual to Americans. Hearty carbohydrates are other essential ingredient to an authentic Oktoberfest celebration. Pretzels are an obvious choice and definitely not one to skip, as they are a simple, filling staple perfect for soaking up mass amounts of beer. Spätzle is a dense noodle dish, which is often thought similar to mac n’ cheese. And knödel, a poached or boiled dumpling, is the perfect complement to the robust meats and brews on the table.
