Meet Tina Straley
MARINA SERVICE MANAGER AT LONGBOAT KEY CLUB MOORINGS
W
ife, Mother and Service Manager are all titles Tina Straley, Marina Service Manager says she doesn't take lightly.
In 1992, Tina recalls "I was a young newlywed with little experience but on the recommendation of a fellow classmate, I took a chance and interviewed for the position of accounting assistant. I overwhelmingly found myself the newest addition to the Marina." In just two short years, Tina made the transition from accounting into the role of Assistant Harbourmaster. During that time she welcomed a new addition to her family. Now well on her way, Tina had become a mother to Mackenzie, now 23. In 2002, ten years into Tina's time at the Marina, a decision was made to add a full-service department offering repairs and maintenance to their boaters. "Although nervous, I was older, wiser and prepared but most of all excited for the opportunity to structure and organize this new department," Tina said. "After 27 years, I still wake up excited to come to work and welcome every challenge," Tina notes with a proud smile. It’s fair to say the service department has been a tremendous success–now with seven valued team members. Today, Tina is confident in saying she has found what she was called to do as she cherishes everything about Longboat Key Club Moorings.

What is Pilates Reformer? More importantly, why should you use it?
by Danielle White
The Pilates Reformer The Reformer has the potential to make a dramatic impression in the gym when you first see it, but even more on the body when you utilize it. Pilates Reformers have a bed-like frame with a flat platform called the carriage, which moves back and forth. This machine uses the Pilates technique incorporating springs, leverage and body weight creating resistance and targeting specific muscle groups for a challenging and intense workout. Exercises can be created in multiple positions based on which muscle groups you would like to target.
Pilates Reformers are probably the more recognized piece of pilates equipment known in the pilates fitness community–and there's good reason, but what is a Pilates Reformer?
30
What are the key benefits of using the Pilates Reformer? The Reformer has the benefits of strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination which will dramatically improve after Reformer sessions. Overtime this is known to improve movement, posture and even pain relief related to physical imbalances in the body.
31 | CLUB EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE
Pilates Reformer instructor.
One of the best things about the reformer is its versatility. Most of the exercises deal with the pushing or pulling of the carriage and holding the carriage during an exercise. A variety of positions ranging from: sitting, standing, lying down, to perching on the foot bar, and the shoulder blocks, offer a wide range of muscle groups to target. Exercises can be aimed at your core and abdominal muscles, hips, inner and outer thighs and your back.
LAUREN O'STRANDER
What muscle groups are most impacted by a Pilates Reformer workout?
Lauren O'Strander is our featured Pilates Reformer instructor. Lauren received her Comprehensive Pilates Certification from Studio 1 Pilates & Performance in Washington. Lauren has taught nationally and internationally since 2015. Lauren is a professional ballerina with the Sarasota Ballet and formerly with the National Ballet of Canada. Lauren also holds certifications for Personal Training and Fitness Nutrition for ISSA. Private sessions are available by appointment only with Lauren at The Fitness Center at Longboat Key Club.

M
embership Clubs have always been known for being prestigious, private, and filled with activities shared with friends old and new that hold common interests. Our exclusive membership experience has not only been enjoyed by members and their families, many of those; extended family members have gone on to become legacy members and continue to enjoy the Longboat Key Club lifestyle. Bill and Cathy Bishop, and Susan Vicari are just two examples of how the Longboat Key Club Legacy Membership is carried on. Joining the Longboat Key Club family in 2009, Bill and Cathy Bishop both found a membership lifestyle that suited their desires. Bill enjoys the benefits associated with the golf membership while Cathy delights in the more social aspects of the spousal Social Membership. 38
Following in Bill's and Cathy's footsteps, their daughter Jennifer Shimek and husband Rich also joined the Club just two years ago as summer members, and plan to upgrade once they retire. Kaitlin and Ryan, are the third generation, who love everything about the club, with hopes that they too carry on the family tradition of joining the Club. "Our experience with the club has been wonderful for our 10 years of membership. Our favorite activities include all golfing events, regular golf–3 times a week with the Bandits, tournaments and of course Twilight," says Bill. Cathy always tries to join Bill at the social following golf. "We actively participate every month in Trivia with our group called Luv n Par. We love to win but still have a great time if we don’t," he continued. The Bishops also enjoy attending many social events such as Bacchus on the Beach–an annual celebration event of food and wine held at the Club, Octoberfest, music events, and special bus activities. "We keep very busy," Bill states, decidedly.
Building memories create a lasting foundation for the future at the Club. Some of Bill and Cathy's best memories include representing their Club as Ambassadors for 2 years. "Terry’s Twilight events, especially this summer when I put together a family team of Jennifer, Kaitlin, Ryan and me. We won some great prizes and had a great time," Bill said. As for keeping up with traditions, the Bishop family joins together for a holiday dinner at Portofino every Christmas day. "Our memories must also include the countless number of people we have met during the years who have become close friends," Bill said.
Philip and Virginia M onnig
Bill Kathy, Ryan, Jennifer, & For the last two years, Jennifer and Rich have enjoyed a summer membership. "Jennifer loves our beach and restaurants, and Rich uses the gym every day when he is here. Kaitlin also is a beach person and loves the pizza at Portofino," Bill said with a reminiscent smile. "Ryan is our other golfer. You can find him on the practice range or golf course every day during the summer. He still beats his Grandpa," Bill exclaims. "Jennifer and Rich can’t wait to upgrade to a full-time membership. We hope our future with the Club is just as much fun as the last decade. More golf, more trips, more Trivia, more activities with our family and good health. We are so happy that we joined." Bill finishes.
Susan Vicari and her husband Joe, also legacy members at Longboat Key Club, have been members for several years now, following Susan's parents. Philip and Virginia Monnig joined the Club in 1987 when Philip retired. They had moved from Sioux City, Iowa and settled into the tropical lifestyle of Longboat Key. Philip and Virginia enjoyed the club amenities, often dining at The Grill–now The Tavern and Whisky Bar, and Spike 'n Tees for breakfast or lunch. "My mom passed in 2007, however, my dad remained a member until the fall of 2012. He broke his hip and resolved to move into a nursing home," Susan remembers. Philip passed in 2016. Philip loved to golf several times a week at the club with his regular group. His golf buddies were club members, Austin Dwyer, Jim Greer, Bob O’Brien, and Daniel Meehan. "His golf partners became his friends on Longboat Key–they socialized together and attended the same church, St. Mary Star of the Sea," Susan said.

The large Monnig Family comprised of 7 children, their spouses, and their children–Philip and Virginia's grandchildren, celebrated Christmas together every other year on Longboat Key. "We have many years of wonderful memories from those times," Susan recalls. "My family still celebrates Christmas every year on Longboat Key," she continued.
Susan and her family also enjoy all the various dining options Longboat Key Club offers. They also enjoy various amenities such as The Spa, art classes, and the gym and fitness classes. At the top of their list are social events–especially Bacchus on the beach wine events. "We attended Bacchus last year for the first time and loved it. We’re attending again this year with friends," said Susan. "Everyone from the club has been so nice and helpful. We’re looking forward to enjoying the new and improved club for many years," Susan finishes.
Susan and her husband Joe joined the club several years ago when they heard about the legacy membership. They also have owned a condo on Longboat Key since 2003. "We try to spend as much time as we can here. Our two daughters have grown up with Longboat Key as their second home. Obviously, we love it here," Susan says. 40

American Womens Tennis... On The Rise Again by Briana François
I
f you've seen headlines recently or read tennis recaps from the Opens a consistent theme has formed: American womens tennis has seen a resurgence. Resurgence may be a bit of a misnomer as American women (or more specifically the Williams sisters) have consistently been at the top of WTA tennis rankings. American mens tennis may be due for a resurgence and we've been long-suffering in that area, but nothing looms on the horizon.
Keys has been ranked in the top 25 since 2015 and her highest ranking was #7. Keys best tournament was in 2017. That year she made it to the finals of the U.S. Open. Next on the ever-growing list is 18-year-old Amanda Anisimova from Aventura, Florida. She is the second-youngest player ranked in the top 100 by the WTA. Amanda won her first tour tournament in April 2019. If you're trying to spot a trend, it's not too hard. All of these players are young and are beginning to mature at a relatively early age in their careers - in many cases you see this happening earlier than their predecessors. This makes the possibility of becoming even more formidable players as time passes more and more likely. These players are disciplined, showing great versatility in playing offensively and defensively, and are exhibiting a level of consistency in play that's reminiscent of the Williams sisters.
When you look at American womens tennis, the winning and success has started to spread out more broadly. The Williams sisters may have been a catalyst, but these women are holding their own and exceeding expectations in a variety of ways. Sofia “ Sonya Kenin, 20 years old from Pembroke Pines, Florida has had an unbelievable year. She has won three WTA singles titles as well as two in doubles, all five of which came in 2019. These impressive stats bring her to #12. Right behind Kenin is #13 Madison Keys. 44
JOIN US IN WELCOMING THE NEW DIRECTOR OF TENNIS
B
Cori “CoCo” Gauff of Delray Beach, Florida, as an example, is the youngest player ranked in the top 100 by the WTA. She has a career-high ranking of No. 69 in the world. She's been the breakout player this year in singles and doubles with her partner Caty McNally of Cincinnati, OH. Were it not for the age eligibility rule of the WTA (no more than 13 pro tournaments before age 17 in one year), Gauff would have had more time seasoning on the circuit. Although Naomi Osaka represents Japan, her roots definitely spring from the United States as she's lived most of her life in Boca Raton. Coming off of wins in the China Open, Osaka is already the second highest paid woman in the sport, behind Serena Williams. It looks like the trend of Americans competing and oftentimes dominating the tour will continue with this new generation of players.

A Florida native, Jane began playing golf at age 10. After a successful junior golf career, she attended Florida International University. It was there she honed her skills as a player and developed a passion for instruction, a passion that has not faded through the decades. She was privileged to study under Mary Oagraedt, the only person ever to receive all three LPGA Teaching and Club Professional top honors: National Teacher of the Year, National Coach of the Year and National Professional of the Year. After graduating from college, Jane qualified for the LPGA Tour. Her career was cut short by injury, but led Jane back to teaching, and directly to the Longboat Key Club. While here Jane has taught thousands of students, from age 3 to 98, beginners to elite, some legally blind and also those who spoke no English (one both!). It was here that Jane won PGA Teacher of the Year for the Southwest Chapter. Along with teaching, Jane believes it is important for PGA Professionals to keep their playing skills sharp. She played in several tournaments over the summer, winning the 2019 Lincoln Women's Senior Met Open by three strokes. Junior Golf is very special and important to Jane. She received Honorable Mention in the Top 50 US Kids Instructors in the world. She coaches a very successful PGA Junior League team at Cold Spring, undefeated this season, winning the League. Jane was also selected as Captain of the All-Star team. We welcome PGA Professional, Jane Sirmons returning November 1st for her 30th season at the Longboat Key Club! Jane looks forward to returning to the beautiful Longboat Key Club, seeing old friends and making new ones. She will be returning from her summer position at Cold Spring Country Club on Long Island, where she serves as Director of Instruction. Jane can be reached at 941-720-4589 or by email at JaneSirmons@pga.com
