Dear Friends,

One of the best parts of my job is working with exceptional colleagues who bring their best selves to work every day. For over 25 years, I’ve seen our staff support each other through hard times— including a pandemic and more than one flood—and celebrate the good times—like promotions, professional achievements and personal milestones. At the Rye Y, we’ve got each other’s back. To quote Tatiana, one of our child care instructors, “I love working at the Y because working in a nurturing place makes me happy.” If your New Year resolution is to find a meaningful job that makes you feel good about coming to work every day, consider a full or part-time position at the Y. We have openings in several departments, including membership, aquatics, child care and fitness. We offer a generous benefits package, including: · · · · · · ·

Free Y membership and program discounts (including child care) Earned time off Training and advancement opportunities Flexible work schedules for work/life balance 10% contribution to the YMCA Retirement Fund once vested Short Term Disability Full time employees are eligible for medical, dental, vision, life and long term disability benefits.

We’re looking for friendly, reliable team members who love to make a difference in the lives of others. And if you’re not looking for a job, please help us find someone who is. At the Rye Y, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of programs for all ages and abilities, even during the pandemic. However, our current staff shortage may curtail our ability to continue offering all of our classes. Details about our job openings can be found at www. https://ryeymca.org/about-us/ careers. We hope that you, or someone you know, will start the new year at the Rye YMCA! Sincerely,

Gregg Howells Executive Director

FOR COMMUNITY Rebuilding and Resilience

When Senior Program Director Kathy Lynam walked through the Y’s mud-caked first floor the day after the remnants of Hurricane Ida pounded the Sound Shore region, she wanted to cry. Several feet of flood water had swept past the front desk and through the hallways, ripping metal doors off their hinges, smashing windows, and inundating the newly-renovated child care classrooms. Lynam and her staff had spent the summer ordering curriculum, tables, chairs, rugs, bookcases, toys and supplies. With the Y’s senior leadership, she had overseen construction as workers repurposed space for a new Early Learning Center, which was scheduled to open on September 7. One of her favorite projects: a new children’s bathroom with a toddler-sized sink and toilet. Ida had destroyed it all. Yet, the day after that, Lynam and several other Rye Y staff members rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

December 2020 - ready for the New Year

You could say that our 107-year-old organization is resilient. Since our founding in 1914, we have survived floods, economic downturns, and changing demographics. But it’s the people who make us resilient—our dedicated staff, steadfast board of directors, loyal members, generous donors and our helpful community partners. They are the reason we started rebuilding within days of the September 1 flood. They are the reason we were able to open the Early Learning Center and other child care programs at alternate locations this fall. And they are the reason we are looking forward to 2022 with hope and optimism. As we move forward, we are replacing drywall and plaster with tile and concrete block, and taking other steps to make the Y more sustainable for the long run. This takes time (and lots of money), but we’re getting there. And when we do, the Rye Y will be stronger and more resilient than ever. Y CARES As a nonprofit charitable organization, the Rye Y is committed to keeping our programs and services affordable to all. Our donor-funded Y Cares Financial Assistance program makes that commitment possible. Through Y Cares, children grow in confidence, make friends and learn new skills at summer camp. Working parents can relax knowing that their children are safe and nurtured at the Y’s child care programs. Seniors stay active and engaged. Y Cares also supports free community programs, including LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, which offers hope and healing to cancer survivors; and Safety Around Water, our drowning prevention initiative for young children. If you would like to inquire about financial assistance, please contact Barbara Hughes, Membership Engagement Director, at barbarahughes@ryeymca.org. All applications are kept confidential. If you would like to support Y Cares through a gift to our Annual Campaign, please contact Susan Olson, Development Director, at susanolson@ryeymca.org. RYE YMCA WINTER/SPRING 2022
