In May of this year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released an advisory calling attention to “the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country.” He noted that “poor or insufficient connection” leads to increased risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia for older adults, and even premature death.
That’s why the YMCA is so vitally important for so many. We bring people together—old people, young people, people who have faced serious illness and people who are training for marathons. People who are financially secure and people who are barely scraping by. People who grew up down the block and people who have crossed oceans to get here. We are here for all.
As one Rye Y member told us “The Y is a place where people make connections. I know a lot of friendships have been made —and revived — here. It’s so nice when you walk in some place and actually know somebody.”
Here at the Y, you can grow stronger by lifting weights. You can build endurance by swimming laps. You can prevent chronic disease through our evidence-based health programs. But you can also feed your soul in ways you may never have anticipated.
Knowing that loneliness and isolation can impact all ages, the Rye Y will offer two new programs this fall. Working in partnership with the Port Chester School District, we’ll launch Youth in Government, an exciting program that gives middle school students real-world experience in the legislative process. We will also offer an adults-only trip to Storm King Art Center. For details, see page 26. We hope that this will be the start of many fun trips together.
Also, check this guide (p 6) for perennial favorites that bring families together, including our Halloween Carnival in October, Family Nerf Nights and First Family Fridays every month.
The Rye Y has been creating “a culture of connection,” as Dr. Murthy recommends, for more than 109 years. Together, we will work to ensure that everyone, especially the most isolated and vulnerable, are able to experience all our Y community has to offer.
Sincerely,
CEOThe RYE YMCA reserves the right to take photos/video of participants for brochures and marketing purposes.

The Rye YMCA has been a longstanding water safety advocate and swim school in the community for 100+ years.
The swim program will focus on building a strong foundation for swimmers to learn the fundamentals of swimming. As participants go through the curriculum they will shift from being water safe, to learning skills that will develop their stroke and technique, followed by developing stamina and endurance. During each 9-week session, participants will develop confidence and strength in the skills they are learning.
In order to maximize class time and efficiency of each lesson, it is important that all participants that are enrolling have the required skill set in the qualifications listed under each class. Participants who do not meet the skills required in the qualifications section will be asked to withdraw from the class, with no guarantee that a spot is available in a different level. Please use our lesson selector to sign up for the most appropriate level. You can also attend an open evaluation time to help decipher the appropriate level (optional – highly encouraged for efficiency). Please click here to view current times. Please make note that qualifications of swimmers vary per age group. A pre-school participant in stage 3, will not qualify for a school-age stage 3.
