INTRODUCTION
RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015

1.1 Doing well through doing good Considerable progress has been made to ensure sustainable development is central to all of our activities across the Group. We recognise that sustainable development – which carefully considers the balance of environmental responsibility, social progress and an enduring approach to economic activity

– provides a framework to ensure the future well-being of our communities, our country and our planet. Our sustainable development strategy is a means towards ensuring that Rydon is aware of the part that we as a business, must play in achieving these aims, wherever we are and in everything that we do.
This year we are able to report on our progress on our KPIs and the key sustainable development challenges facing our work and the communities in which we work. This document constitutes Rydon’s approach to sustainability, our progress so far and our aspirations and objectives for the future.
At Rydon we have made social responsibility and sustainability an area of strategic focus, both for what we do as a company and within the communities we serve. By combining existing schemes, such as our carbon reduction programme and the projects we run with The Prince’s Trust, together with fresh ideas, like those being developed through our fleet emission monitoring dashboard, we aim to keep our achievements not only ahead of our customer and wider stakeholder expectations but also continue to strive to deliver beyond industry standards.

2.1 Our Approach to Sustainable Development At Rydon, we consider the good practice of our corporate responsibilities in relation to the environment, economy and social fabric of the places in which we operate as sustainable development. Our long term economic growth relies on
protecting and enhancing the environmental resources that underpin it, and paying due regard to social needs. 6
RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015
We focus on the following core areas of responsibility:
1. Our Impact on the Environment
3. Corporate Governance and Reporting 2. People and Communities

2.3 People and Communities As part of our social sustainability agenda we focus on the following: • Maintain and expand our existing relationships with schools and colleges to engage with them and their young people to introduce them to the industry and the potential careers in all aspects of the built environment.
• Develop and expand our apprenticeship, work experience, training and employment opportunities for people in and around the communities in which we work. • Register every site with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and set internal targets to achieve average scores that are significantly above industry average, and thereby absolutely ensure minimal disruption to residents and neighbours during our developments.
• At every opportunity we try to involve local trades’ people, suppliers and other potential business partners in the development process in order to bring work and income into the areas in which we operate.
• Maintain our long-standing support of The Prince’s Trust and run ‘Get Into Construction’ programmes with the Trust, providing a comprehensive and supportive introduction to our industry for disadvantaged young people.
• Promote training and employment opportunities for local people within the communities in which we work.
• Involve, consult, communicate and actively engage with the
immediate and neighbouring communities with whom we are working. • Maintain our Staff Forum which coordinates a wide range of activities in support of selected charities through a formal charity volunteering system and the Rydon Charitable Trust.

2.4 Corporate Governance and Sound Reporting As a highly regulated industry we are required to subscribe to a number of independent third party performance assessments in order to maintain our ability to compete. Most of these are closely related to the core areas of responsibility mentioned previously and enable us to benchmark and measure
our performance improvement. Central to these are the standards to which we subscribe via our external agent, the British Standards Institution (BSI). Additionally, we subscribe and register all construction sites to the national Considerate Constructors Scheme.
Through this initiative each site is inspected and assessed in terms of how it is being managed in relation to the local community. Performance is reported on a relative scale, enabling us to create measurements which can be transformed into Sustainability KPIs and compared both internally and externally against industry benchmarks.

ACHIEVEMENTS
RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015
11
3.1 Our Impact on the Environment
Electricity This year we have successfully reduced our electricity consumption, based on turnover £’s spent. Year to date CO2 KG 2012/13 24,332.93 2013/14 20,468.83
That’s a 15 per cent electricity reduction!
Waste 2014: 96.89% Overall recycling rate performance this year. “The construction and demolition sector is the largest contributor of waste in the UK, responsible for generating 120 million tonnes of waste every year – around one third of all waste in the UK” (Green Building Council, 2014)
12
RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015
Fleet We have seen considerable progress in our fleet programme this year: • Our fleet dashboard is now fully working, enabling us to view the miles and emissions of all cars in our fleet. This provides a tool that is ahead of industry standards and presents the opportunity to accurately report fleet emissions. • The average fuel efficiency of the car fleet has improved by 6% to 103g CO2/km.
ESOS In accordance with the government’s Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), we successfully carried out an energy assessment for the company. Included within this was a calculation for our total energy consumption, as well as the identification of areas of significant energy use, along with a detailed schedule of energy reduction recommendations.
UK businesses could save over
£250m
per year
Analysis by DECC suggests that UK businesses could save over £250m and 3 TWh of energy per year if just 5% of the potential ESOS energy saving recommendations are successfully implemented. With the ESOS report produced we can now take our performance to the next level, by taking some of the recommendations forward in the next year.

3.2 People and Community Achievements In the built environment field, the social dimension of sustainability has long been the poor relation – with a general lack of joined-up policy and guidance in place to help shape development approaches and neighbourhood strategies. Social sustainability is a complex issue, influenced by a range of actors that are not under the control of any single agency. It is about improving the quality of life for the users/ residents in the communities where we are working. We have therefore focussed our social sustainability endeavours on elements that are topical today; training, unemployment, engagement, being considerate.

The Prince’s Trust ‘Get into Construction’ Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. It supports 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Rydon has enjoyed a long association with The Prince’s Trust, helping to inspire many young people to work in the construction industry. We hosted the first ever Get into Construction programme delivered entirely on a live construction site.
We are also a member of The Prince’s Trust’s Construction and Business Services Leadership Group, which helps to fund and facilitate courses for vulnerable young people across the UK. Through our work, we have become The Trust’s gold standard company for this group. We also won their Inspiring Leaders award for London and the South East in 2009.
The Prince’s Trust at Camden 2015 Rydon offered a group of young unemployed people a first step into a construction career this year at Bacton Low Rise, one of Camden’s largest construction projects, through a programme held with The Prince’s Trust. We achieved one of our highest levels of success from a Get Into construction programme, with eight of the original 12 now in full time training or employment, developing their careers in our industry.

As well as hosting the first ever Get into Construction programme delivered entirely on a live construction site, Rydon is a member of The Prince’s Trust’s Construction and Business Services Leadership Group, helping to fund and facilitate courses for vulnerable young people across the UK. Through our work, we have become The Trust’s gold standard company for this group. We take a look at some of those on the programme this year and what they have been up to since the programme ended in March 2015.
Alex Dos Santos, Site Management Trainee
Henry Frost, Apprentice with HKH Building Services
Alex was selected by Rydon to join as a site management trainee for a period of six months after completing the programme. He is now based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital project in Tower Hamlets and plans to go to college. Prior to the programme he had worked for his family business.
Before being referred by The Prince’s Trust, Henry had been working for a family business and did not know how to get a first step into the industry. Henry has just started an apprenticeship with HKH Building Services on the Packington Estate scheme in Islington and is focused on his career ambition to become a fully qualified carpenter.
Commenting on his experiences, Alex said:
Commenting on his experiences, Henry said:
“The Prince’s Trust gave me a great opportunity to go out and experience an industry I have always wanted to work in. I can’t thank Rydon and the Trust enough for helping me to discover what I want to do with my career. I have enjoyed all the practical activities and learnt so much.”
“The Prince’s Trust is a great charity. The staff are kind and easy to get along with. I would like to thank Harj Goraya at the Trust for motivating me as well as to Christine Edwards and Tony Miller at Rydon for helping me to learn and pass my CSCS test.”

CIPS Sustainability Index Rydon signed up to the CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply) Sustainability Index (SI). The SI is an assessment of sustainability, and provides ‘scores’ for economic, environmental and social aspects of business operations. Rydon signed up to the SI earlier this year and achieved the following scores:
CIPS and our supply chain We also started using the CIPS SI as a way of engaging with our supply chain, allowing us to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability through our sustainability index.

3.3 Governance and Reporting We have restructured the way we govern sustainability. To greater align the Group’s strategic approach to sustainable development with the operational oversight and compliance function, currently delivered by the Safety Team, delivery of the sustainability function has been incorporated with the Safety Department. Within this setting, the sustainability programme within the company will be led by the Safety Directors Forum (SDF), which has director level representation from all operating divisions, and is supported by the Safety and Sustainability Leadership Group (SSLG).
The aims of the Safety and Sustainability Leadership Group (SSLG): • Ensuring all core business elements actively create and promote safe & sustainable working environments; • Leadership, passion and commitment are present throughout the organisation at all levels; • Working safely enhances quality, improves productivity and generates value;
• Empowering our people to make choices about their own and their neighbour’s safety & sustainability and to challenge the environment in which they work;
• Our business only welcomes those who support our culture and vision and commitment to change – no compromise on safety & sustainability;
• Encouraging good safety behaviour which is admired, respected and recognised across our business;
• Making all reasonable efforts to understand, measure and improve on all aspects of our work and practices that have an impact on those people and places with whom we engage.
• Ensuring we have a well-trained and fully competent workforce who actively contribute to the safe, sustainable planning of our work;

WHAT’S NEXT?

RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015
We have set an ambitious plan going forward Here are some of the key projects that we have lined up to continue developing sustainably NEW! ISO 14001: 2015 Our transition plan The new version of the ISO 14001 standard has been launched as ISO 14001:2015, along with a three year transition period for businesses to accommodate the changes. A readiness review for our transition to the new standard was undertaken with BSI on 8th March 2016. A report was provided by BSI on 14th March 2016, confirming that Rydon is currently 90% compliant with the
new standard with only some minor changes needed to be implemented across the Group. It could therefore be possible to gain accreditation to the new standard by the last quarter of this financial year.
Sustainable Procurement We will be conducting a review of our current procurement policies and practices to allow us to better understand how to make the process more sustainable. Having begun
using the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply – Sustainability Index (CIPS-SI) in the final quarter of last year as a way of scoring the sustainability of our supply chain partners, we will be looking into ways to encourage the adoption of the tool by more of our suppliers. The end goal of this work is the creation of a spot check system to enable our purchasing department to analyse suppliers prior to the ordering of materials.

21
Carbon Footprint To help ourselves meet our KPI of reducing the Group’s electricity CO2 emissions by 4% each year, we will be introducing new measures for communicating the carbon footprints of sites and offices. Site teams will be able to input their monthly scope 2 emissions into a pre-designed spreadsheet which can then be displayed around the site to encourage employees to reduce electricity use. In addition to helping to achieve a KPI, this should improve our
22
RYDON GROUP Sustainability Report 2015
understanding of electricity use and contribute to us scoring better in CCS reviews.
Unified Communications As an expanding company, Rydon is always looking at new technologies that can be adopted to improve business efficiency. One project in the coming year will focus on the introduction of web conferencing in place of travelling to meetings. Having been tested successfully by the Healthcare division, we feel
now is an opportune time to roll out the technology to other assets of the company. Reducing the amount of business miles offers significant benefits covering all manners of sustainability: economically through financial savings, environmentally through emission reductions, and socially by lessening the time employees spend travelling.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this report. This year we made great progress in our governance structure for sustainability and we are well placed for 2016. Our report highlights the key sustainability achievements in 2015 as well as the changes that have been put in place to the way we govern sustainability across the Rydon Group. It is vital that we create an environment for new innovations that benefit people and planet, and enable them to take shape at scale. I am delighted that we have put particular focus on improving and updating our systems to allow such
innovations to develop. We have met our 2015 targets to improve environmental protection by reducing electricity consumption, recycling over 96% of our waste and continuing to manage and reduce emissions from our fleet. We have also successfully completed and submitted our ESOS report. These topics remain at the centre of our plan going forward, and, as you will see from the previous page, the journey continues with a new set of ambitious sustainability projects planned for 2016.
