Personal Statement

Location Boulder, CO

I am a senior at The University of Colorado Boulder and I have been interested in design since I was a child making popsicle stick homes and small villages. I have a huge passion for architecture. I hope to persure a career in residential architecture, partcicularly in mountainous regions because that is the style that has inpired me the most.

Floor Plan 4

This Accessory Dwelling Unit is designed for Habitat for Humanity. It is a modular prefabricated building that is in people’s backyards to rent out in order to make their properties more affordable. HFH wanted to focus on stormwater management because this is a problem in Denver. I created a single pitched roof system to drain all the rain water to one corner of the ADU. The water then drains into a gravel water catchment, then flows through a pipe into a series of bioswale planter that will absorb the rain water as well as water the native grassy plants.

Site Plan

The modular 12’x12’ floor plan can fit on a large truck and is designed to be mass produced and rearranged in order to be affordable for low income homeowners in Denver. There is a living room module, a kitchen module, and a bedroom/bathroom module that are able to be switched around depending on the site and clients. This is a very simple and sustainable design. The stormwater management system is also modular and designed to be mass produced. It is also designed to keep almost all of the rainwater on the site using the gutter system I designed.

ADU Rendering

The site plan shows how the ADU has a lot of sun exposure on the south side which utilizes passive solar energy. It also shows its place in Denver and on the site in relation to the primary residence and the alley. Since the ADU and Stormwater Management System are small, modular, and easily replicable the whole project is cheap, economically smart, and will bring in extra money to the primary residence. 5

ADU Diagram

The single pitched roof and runnels use the energy of gravity to bring the water to one corner of the roof where it pours into the integrated gravel water catchment and planter system that utilizes all of the water resources that are captures. The water then filters in two directions into the bioswale planters, and overflow exits through the perforated tube. 6

Bioswale Planter The bioswale planter contains both native Denver, CO soils and grasses which are local to the place of the ADU. This planter is meant to infiltrate the stormwater captured on the roof and water the native grasses which adds to the ecology of the site. Once the water is too high, it will drain out of the perforated pipe and go into the alley.

Gravel Water Catchment

The Gravel Water Catchment module is where the storm water falls out of the spout from the roof and works as a splash guard so that the water doesn’t splash forcefully onto the plants. It also acts as a water retention basin and holds water inside so that there is less outflow..

This greenhouse is designed to withstand harsh cold winters and hot dry summers and grow different types of plants and trees throughout the year. It has a very simple deisgn and maximizes the winter sun exposure from the south while not letting too much sun in during the summers. The classroom mirrors the greenhouse and is meant for children to learn about how greenhouses work as well as learn about the plants growing in them.

Behind the two buildings I designed a path that weaves around the trees. The path’s shape mimics a tree, and it is meant for people to walk around and think and enjoy nature. The photos of the models shown below are the absractions of the buildings that I created. They are representations of the greenhouse and classroom.

14

This abstract model is based on the form and shape of the Clyfford Still Art Museum in Denver, CO. Our class took a field trip to visit the museum and its abstract yet admirable form. Its use of cantilevers and concrete is one of the things that inspired me about this building. The way it stands up and uses sharp right angles is very interesting. From the outside I asswumed it would be very dark on the inside but the buidling uses light in a really cool way and that is what inspired my use of the acryllic on top of the concrete. It took me many itterations in order to get this final model. I used a laser cutter to create the mold for the concrete I hand mixed and placed small pieces of foam into the heavier contilever parts to ensure it wouldn’t fall over and crack. I placed the acryllic in the mold to make the pieces stay.

The City of Boulder is proposing a new design for a new public library in North Boulder. We were given a site and a very specific program to base our designs of. Figuring out how people entered the site and where people would park is one of the first things I though about because I believe that it’s very important and I would have to redign the roads and create a new entrance to onto the site. I also wanted to maximize the sun exposure and views to the flatirons by orienting my buidlings a certain way. I wanted this building to draw in people driving by and be interesting and inviting.

Since libraries are constantly adapting and changing and innovating, this library has some new cool features that aren’t typical in most older libraries. A large portion of the library is dedicated to a makers space which is open to the public. This space would have a wood shop, laser cutters, 3D printers, and other technology that isn’t always easily available to the community. This is one of my favorite things that was on the program because I think it will draw a lot of people in an encourage people to learn new things.

The huge catilevered roof provides some sun protection for people inside as well as some shade over the large civic park where people can relax and read or attend big events. The huge curtain wall provides a lot of natural lighting and offers great views to visitors. Amazon was looking for a city to place its new headquartes and this is my proposed site and deisgn in Denver, CO. To determine a good site I did a bunch of thourough analysis using GIS and doing research on the city. I wanted to select an area where there wouldn’t have to be much removal of current residents (gentrification). My target population for this site is young adults who just graduated from college and young innovative adults who like to connect and collaborate with each other.

This portfolio is composed of my work throughout college at The University of Colorado Boulder. After learning about architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and design in the Environmental Design program I have come to understand the important connection between these emphases. I believe that design is able to positively impact lives which is what I strive for in a career. I grew up in a small mountain town in Colorado and have always been inspired by the beauty of architecture, especially in mountainous regions because that is where I feel most at home. I am very passionate, hard working problem solver as well as a creative thinker and fast learner, as I love to learn new things.
