Multiplicity
for solo trumpet
and Max/MSP Electronics
2015
Ryan Williams (ASCAP)
Multiplicity For Solo Trumpet and Max/MSP Duration: 4’02” Program Notes This piece of music was commissioned by and is dedicated to Ryan Satmary, a former student of mine. The piece was written to be premiered on Ryan’s senior recital at Towson University. As I began to sketch out ideas for this piece, the idea came to mind to incorporate electronics into the work - to use the power of the computer to simulate an environment in which Ryan would sound as if he’s playing with ensemble, whereas it’s really just the computer creating the effect. Once the piece started to come together, it really became an exciting challenge for me to learn the software to use it deeper than I had in the past.
Performance Notes This work relies on the electronics being incorporated as a part of the overall context of the work; while the player may be able to learn the part without the computer, it is essential for the performance. With practice, the performer could trigger the computer effects himself/ herself, though it may be more manageable to have an assistant to trigger each of the events with the computer. The computer needs a Max/MSP Patch to manipulate the audio - this file can be acquired from the composer directly. Additionally, the audio output requires four independent speakers connected through a single audio interface. The performer should stand (or sit) at the center of the stage, with either a microphone on a stand or a clip-on instrument mic connected to the bell of the trumpet. The speakers should be placed along the front edge of the stage, spaced equidistant across the stage. The performer should take caution to set the microphone behind the speakers, so as to prevent feedback.
About the Composer
Ryan Williams has been writing music, both original and arrangements, since high school. In that time, he has composed numerous works for chamber groups, wind band, and orchestra. He has received commissions for works that have been performed by students of all ages, ranging from elementary school beginners through collegiate performance majors. Williams’ works can be found for sale through J.W. Pepper, published through CWJ Music House, and also from TrevCo Music Publishing. His work as an arranger consists of writing for more than a dozen competitive and non-competitive high school and college bands over the last ten years. Additionally, Ryan has been on the instructional staff for multiple drum and bugle corps since 2012, serving as tuba technician, brass instructor, and contributor to the overall musical book for the drum and bugle corps. Outside the world of the marching arts, Mr. Williams also serves in the United States Army Reserve, as an instrumentalist, conductor, and writer with the 78th Army Reserve Band from Fort Dix, New Jersey. After enlisting with the then-307th Army Reserve Band in 2002, Ryan has written numerous arrangements that have been performed for audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousands all over the country. Ryan received his Master of Music Theory and Composition from West Chester University in December 2015. He also attended West Chester University for his Bachelor’s of Music, then his Bachelor’s of Science in Music Education from York College.
